Philippinesfrom south carolina processing AOS

Submit the AoS papers in your MARRIED name. You will then receive your green card in your MARRIED name. You can then take your green card, passport, and marriage certificate to the Social Security office and apply for the name change and to have the work restriction lifted.

Ingats!

thanks for the reply:) i understand now takecare too

Philippinesfrom south carolina processing AOS

I think I read somewhere on VJ that if there is less than 30 days left before your I-94 expires then you can't change your name on your SS card until you receive your EAD. My wife's I-94 has already expired, so she has to wait at least until then before going in to change her name. If everything goes quickly with the processing of her AOS I might even have her wait until she receives her GC, so that she can change her SS card to her married name AND it wont have that writing on top about employment needing DHS authorization. I think if you do it with the EAD instead of the GC then they are going to leave that writing on the card.

thanks for reply, my I194 is not expired, ssn told us that my I194 in my passport need to change first before they can change my last name and reffer us to customs,we went to costums but they said they are not allowed to change it,and said to us to do first the AOS before the SSN change do you think its better to us to go on different ssn office?

No, we sent in our AOS after Chinook changed her name on her Social Security card.

Chinook arrived in the U.S. in mid-March and she applied for her Social Security card around the end of March. She received her Social Security card the second week of April. We were married in early May. Shortly after we were married, we went back to the Social Security office and she applied for a name change on her Social Security card. The new Social Security card arrived in mid-May. We applied for AOS before the end of May.

thanks for the reply, so maybe we will just try our luck in different ssn office?

Are you speaking of the I-94 card taht was stapled to your passport when you entered the USA the first time?

There is a I-194 form also but it has nothing to do with a name change.

All you should need is your passport and marriage certificate. Since you are applying for AOS you do not have ypour conditional green card yet.
My wife had to get a South Carolina state ID card from the DMV (department of motor vehicles) before the SSN office would give her a SSN card. She did not apply for the SSN card until after we were married. The SSN office will check in the system for your name using the number on your I-94. When they saw her name in the system and her SC ID they gave her a SSN card in her now married name. We went to the Charleston SSN office.

I hope this helps because I am not sure exactly what your question is? :help:

thanks for the reply, what i want to ask is that got my ssn when i arrive here, then we got married, then we went again to ssn to change my last name then they told us that my I 194 the stamp in my passport need to change first and reffer as to customs then they said in customs they are not allowed to change my last name, are we gonna try our luck on different ssn office?

We are K-1ers too. Chinook applied for a Social Security card in her maiden name about ten days after she arrived in the U.S. and about one month before we got married. After we were married, we went to the Social Security office again and Chinook applied for a name change to her married name. The Social Security office simply asked to see her current Social Security card, her passport, and a copy of our marriage certificate that we got from the county. It was free and easy. Chinook received her updated Social Security card in the mail about two weeks later.

thanks for reply, so that means you first all had your AOS done before applying the SSN name change?

PhilippinesITIN

Correct. Your wife does not need (and is not qualified to receive) an ITIN because she has an SSN. Be thankful, I'm looking forward to many headaches with getting an ITIN for my wife and getting our taxes filed.

George

thanks for the clarification. i thought i was done with most of the difficult stuff and then i read this thread and was like WHAT?

maybe someone can explain this - i thought a ITIN was only needed if the foreign national / spouse etc didn't qualify for a SSN? my wife has an SSN, so when i file my 2010 taxes we shouldnt need a ITIN?

They tell you it takes up to 2 months to get new passport.

thanks for the info, I hope it wont be that long though:( we are planning to visit my family..

We went in person to Washington. You get the report of marriage immediately, and my wifes passport (in married name) took about three weeks.

wow thanks for the info it really helps:)

Philippinesname difference green card passport

You do it all at the same time, same visit. If you get there early enough, before the Consul arrives, then you can get it back the same day. We spent a few hours waiting for him to show up, and we got out of there around lunch time. The affidavit was around $25. I think we spent $100 total, for the renewal, reporting the marriage, and the affidavit (wife changed the spelling of her first name with the DHS, from Ma_ to Marie). That was four years ago, in San Francisco.

thank you so much for this helpful information:)

Philippinesname difference green card passport

After you report your marriage to the Philippines consulate, then you can your passport renewed. They will change the passport name in the Filipino manner, your father's last name as middle name, and your husband last name as your last name. If that doesn't coincide with the name on your green card, (and the person reviewing your application won't do it your way, as most likely will be the case) you either have to change the name on the green card, or get an Affidavit of One and the Same Person from the consulate. Depending on the airline, they may not let you board on the return flight, unless the ticket, the Filipino passport, and the US green card all have exactly the same name. Be prepared to argue your case, to anyone that will listen, and bring plenty of proof, if you don't have that affidavit!

Thank you for the advice, I have one more question, after I report my marriage, I will renew my passport, how can I request for the affidavit? do I need to ask that before I go to the renewal? because I am from South Carolina and we have to fly to have a personal appearance to DC

Philippinesname difference green card passport

Is your green card in your married name or your name before you were married?
You can carry your marriage license with you to show it is the same person. Usually we hear about the green card being in the married name and the passport with the maiden name. Where you might run into trouble though is the expiration date in your passport. Usually you're required to have a passport that does not expire in the next 6 months to travel internationally. If you're traveling now, you barely have 6 months, in June and you do not have 6 months. You need to register your marriage with the Philippines Consulate before you can change your passport name to. Hopefully you've completed that step, but it can be completed at the same time as renewing your passport. Just make sure you bring all the requirements they ask for. They also may ask for a copy of any divorce decrees when you register your marriage. Its not in the instructions, but they mailed back to us requesting my divorce decree when we registered our marriage.

Thank you very much I appreciate your advice:)

Philippinesname difference green card passport
Hello and kamusta sa lahat
I am a permanent resident in South Carolina, I am originally from Philippines, my green card will be expired on January 2013 and my Philippine passport will be expired this Nov 2012. When i married my husband I use my middle name from my mother, suppose to be in Philippine passport it should be the father's name, We are planning to visit my relatives in japan. I was planning to renew my passport but i wonder if after I renew it to my married name will give me a problem from traveling.
any body here has the same experience I am going through?
Thanks in advance and God bless.
