I filed my N-400 back in January. Had my fingerprints taken in February, but no progress since then. I had been trying to call USCIS to put in a request to research my case for a while now. USCIS didn't take my request because my case was no more than 2 months delayed compared to the posted "normal" timelines.

Well finally they took the request last week, and here's the response.

"Your fingerprints from your first Biometrics appointment came back as unclassifiable; therefore you will need to retake them."

I have no special urgency to become a US citizen, but this is a little frustrating. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could've done or should do going forward to make it go faster/smoother?

I would just go to the district office right away without appointment and have my fingerprints taken. Of course I would tell them why the first set was not 'acceptable'.

I noticed that the period of time b/w the biometrics and the interview is a little longer than average in your case as it is in my case.
Do not you think there are some subjective factors/criteria immigration officers employ when it comes to certain people? It is annoying if you ask me...

Well, would that be bad news? Think of people (like me) who have to wait 4 months after interview day for the oath... I applied in the last week of June and my interview is at the end of October, if I am approved my oath will be in February or March 2010 ? I received my interview letter a few days ago but the interview date is later than I expected. It is on 28th of October.And as far as I know Milwaukee does the oat ceremonies months after the interview....

I had the same concern because in the application you state that you have been resident for three years so there is a conflict. I asked them and they said technically you are eligiable ninty days before the three years, Congress wanted the proccessing time to be deducted from the three years.
I have applied and everything seems fine.
They are able to approve you.



I hope you are right... It adds additional tension to the wait.

1 800 375 5283 is the number to call and 'I do not have/know my receipt number' is the option that helps you get transferred to an immigration officer. Like I said I have not gotten any info that I did not have...maybe you will. Give it a try.

I just got the NOA1 letter in the mail. Up till late last night I kept checking my online bank statement, no my check had not been cashed. But today it says it was cashed yesterday. unsure.gif The letter says my case is at the NBC. Is that how it works?

Frustratingly, I didn't include enough. Unfortunately, the package was returned with a confusing NOA saying there was information missing and/or the application was outdated. So tomorrow I will refile it all once again, on a new up-to-date form. (I checked it seems the form is the most recent)

I included the copy of the front and back of the green card, birth and marriage licences, with divorce papers, a copy of our lease, and three years of tax transcripts. So just the basics, I figured the rest can be shown at the interview. oh and the cheque!

Out of curiousity how hard did you study for the test? I have a very good grasp on the questions.... every once in a while I blank on Senate vs House vs Congress terminology or something silly...but I wouldn't want them to be the 4 or 5 questions I couldn't answer on interview day if you know what I mean.

I was using the tool pinned above and it was useful....I vaguely knew the president from WWI (Wilson) but had to guess.

I see some folks' posts and they get asked ridiculously easy questions .....does the quality of the questions have to do with how well the interviewee speaks english ( of course it shouldn't because that wouldn;t be fair).

See the extremes guys. Milwaukee office take 3.5 to 4 months to get to Oath after interview and San Diego gives you same day or next day oath... Does the Department offer help to spouses who wish to naturalize?
A: Yes. The Family Liaison Office assists Department of State family members eligible for expeditious naturalization under Section 319(cool.gif of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), which exempts certain spouses of U.S. Government employees from the otherwise-applicable residence and physical presence requirements of naturalization. (Naturalization under Section 319(cool.gif does not exempt applicants from other requirements of naturalization, such as good moral character, knowledge of United States history and government, and English language skills.) For a Department employee's spouse to qualify under Section 319(cool.gif, the employee must be a U.S. citizen "regularly stationed abroad" as part of his or her employment. Additionally, the applicant must be in the United States at the time of naturalization and make a good faith declaration of intent to take up residence within the United States immediately upon the termination of employment abroad by the U.S. citizen spouse.'

wrong. I never lived in the US and I did become a USC under Article 319b of Immigration nationality Act. This act waives all the physical presence required in naturalization application..
Maybe if my guess is right they rejected your application as you have used your address overseas.

When I filed my application, I put the US address, even we are living overseas. Your case is different somehow, but missionary thing falls also under 319b.

My question, did you include all the information regarding this missionary thing you are involved?, did you ask for any letter that prove that this is a US organization? Any article of incorporation that prove this organization?

When you send your application this time, include cover letter that explains your job, the FP cards and use your US address in the N400 Application. A letter from your ministry that verifying that you or your husband is working for a missionary and state how long he will be there.

I had my oath ceremony from Milwaukee DO building, but they didn't pass out the flag.
They only distributed the booklet, and the copy of papers such as "Instructions of certificate signature", and others.

Hi,

Since you already have a social security number you do not need to fill out a form.Apply for a new social security card. If there is a security person there ask him-her, s-he will give you the right ticket. I did the same last week but the lady at SS told me that their computer system can not communicate with Homeland Security's system nationwide so I needed to wait a few weeks for the status update letter to be sent. I hope this lack of communication does not delay the processing of ouur applications.
