I'm sure we saw each other in the waiting room :)
My experience was exactly the same (other than the times - I showed up late because I foolishly trusted the TTC to function), except I didn't have to keep my bra on. Also, my roommate had hidden chocolate around the house for Easter and apparently thought my dresser was a good spot, because I had melted chocolate all over my shirt and neck!! Embarrassing, but not an issue, haha.

I'm worried about my chest xrays, but overall, this was the least painful part of the process thus far.

Dang! I can't believe 3 hours was "cutting it close"! I'm POEing there tomorrow - flight is at 3:15 and I was thinking of showing up at 1pm...might have to rethink that plan, haha.

CanadaQuick question about when to book wedding stuff..

We did the thing everyone will advise you against- planned a wedding while the visa was processing. I think there is no harm in this as long as you give yourself plenty of time to have the visa issued, and also make sure anything you book can be refunded, or make sure they will let you move the date if needed.

Same! But that's because our lawyer insisted the visa would arrive in January (she was way, way off - no idea where she got January from (probably the cereal box she got her law degree from *grumble grumble*). Got my passport on Monday and the wedding is in 10 days! Cutting it close, for sure!

CanadaResident status for taxes?
From Health Canada's website. Fortunately Manitoba didn't apply this 3 month wait.

How do I resume my health care coverage when returning to Canada following a lengthy absence?

A three-month waiting period is usually applied before coverage is reinstated. For information on requirements and conditions for reinstating health insurance coverage, contact the Ministry of Health of the province or territory to which you intend to return.

I took a look at OHIP's site and looks like they do apply this 3 month rule.

That said, they state that 3 months from the date of residence which to me would mean the day you get back to Canada. If you're here .... you're a resident regardless of your healthcare status.

CanadaResident status for taxes?
At the risk of veering off topic a little bit.

I believe that you were advised wrong on the health piece. I'm Canadian was a resident in BC before moving to the US on a work Visa. Once I was down there I cancelled the BC Health. Returned to Canada 9 months later (was not gone for 1 year), this time to Manitoba. Went in to get a Manitoba Health card and they gave it to me the same day. I seem to remember them saying that if I was transferring from another province there would have been a year waiting period but since I was returning from the US ... basically welcome back. I'd take a closer look at that if I were you.

Sadly ... taxes are above my head.

CanadaMedical in Toronto
I called them last Friday morning and left a message that I was hoping to get a medical done quickly as I'd only be in Toronto for a week. They called me back Friday afternoon with a Monday a.m. appointment. $300 cash, bring your passport photos, passport and interview letter and you are good. They had me come back Mon afternoon to do some immunizations that I couldn't show records for. Picked up the results Wed at noon. I thought the Toronto medical was super efficient.

Thanks for the DHL link.

Went out today to get the 3 passport photos required for the medical on Monday.

@Evilsquee Was your fiance trying to get a medical in Toronto ? When I spoke to them Friday they said I could come Mon, Tues, or Wed just had to bring the interview letter, passport, 3 passport photos, any immunization records and $300 cash.

Maybe difference between K1 and CR1

Finally got an interview for July 12th.

I guess I'll see some of you there !

I called Dr. Seidens on Friday and was able to get in for my medical this coming Monday. Great news as I'm leaving Toronto this coming Friday for good. The one thing I haven't figured out yet is how to set up DHL. Do I do that now or at the interview ? I'll read up on it later in the day but if anyone has figured this out, let me know.

Good luck to all !

CanadaWaiting for Packet 4
Hi there,

I am in a similar situation, just found out from the DOS that Montreal has received our case from the NVC, and I am preparing my documents for the Pkt 3 without having received anything in the mail from Montreal.

I have everything listed to send back to the consulate, but the only thing I am missing is the first item on the interview checklist - the date of interview. Should I just check this off and send it back to Montreal?

Thanks for your help.

CanadaAppointments available in Montreal! Schedule yours NOW :)

Did you see any dates in December that come close to Christmas holidays like December 23rd? and anything After Christmas? Has anyone seen that? Reason why I ask is I know some government offices be taking the longest two week Christmas holiday break, I wonder if they do that there?

Last interview spot was Dec 24 after they opened up all the spots today. Couldn't book any January spots.

CanadaNexus should I get one while in K1 visa process?

I used my Nexus on POE perfectly fine. Just told them I was activating a K1 and importing my vehicle and they brought me inside. Inside, there was a Nexus lineup as well...which included just me!

Hey,

So I applied early August for a Nexus pass and it took FOREVER for them to process my request. As it turns out, my Nexus interview is scheduled after my K1 visa interview, but before my POE. This means that the first time I will be using my Nexus pass is for my actual POE at Buffalo.

What I'm wondering is - is it worth it to go to the interview? Can I still use it after I'm living in the U.S. and have AP for traveling back to visit my friends/family? I feel like my question is similar to the OP - is it worth it for use after POE and living in the U.S.?

Thanks!

Whew, luckily the credit check went ok and the landlord approved us for the place! Very exciting to have found my first home in the U.S.

Thanks for all the responses, hopefully I can work on building good credit asap when I get down to Boston!

Huh, interesting. The landlord just got back to me and said that he would just do my U.S fiance's credit check. I worked so hard for awesome credit here in Canada, now it's worthless!

Hopefully his is good enough for the both of us!

Thanks for the input.

Hi there,

I'm filing for a K-1 and I have my interview mid-December but we are looking for apartments for January 1 now. The landlord at the house that we love has asked for a credit check. Has anyone else had this experience before actually moving and getting an SSN? Can he do a Canadian credit check on me? I'm just trying to make it as easy as possible for the guy so I look like a great tenant :)

Thanks!

CanadaMontreal December 2011 Interviews
Hi there,

I have my interview on Friday, 16 Dec, 8am.

Is there anyone else here that has had a Dec interview that has arrived much earlier than their scheduled interview and had them not take people first come, first served? I have been reading every post about all the November interviews and it seemed that people were arriving any time after 6:30 am for 8 am interviews, and that they were taking people in the order they arrived.

After reading all of that, I was planning on arriving at 6:45 to wait till 7:30 when they open the doors. Am I being crazy?

CanadaEI while waiting for Green card?
Yeah, what you said makes much more sense. Thanks!

It sounds as though you have been in contact with an EI officer that is not up to date on the US immigration laws. If they back date that claim to when you POE'd and someone audits your case, I would be worried about having to pay that back. You can not collect benefits until you are legally able to work (when you get your EAD or GC). ANd you can only be back paid to a point where you were actually looking for work. So if you have not applied for any jobs, registered on a website like Monster or with a temp agency and again, your case is audited you could lose your benefits.

I would inform them that you were told you couldn't qualify for EI until you had your EAD or GC and have that person verify that with someone else in the office (that is if you happen to speak with this person again).

CanadaEI while waiting for Green card?
Hey,

I'm wondering if this has happened to anyone else...

I POEd on a K-1 Jan 1 and applied for EI Jan 8. They are still "reviewing" my case, but I am sending my cards in. I don't have an EAD (haven't yet applied for AOS).

BUT

The last guy at the EI interstate office told me that even though I can't technically be working in the U.S. on my K-1, Canada recognizes it as being able to work for the 90 days that it is issued for. I'm not legal here to be hired, but it seems they're overlooking that. He said as soon as I get my EAD and send it in, I will be back-paid to when I applied (Jan 8).

Thoughts?

We sent an email to Montreal Consulate for this question just for 100% certain and minutes ago we received their reply: The fee can be paid here at our office but it must be cash $131.00 USD.

Oh and your interview is on my birthday biggrin.gif YAY!

Thanks. My letter has the same saying. However, we are confused by the consulate website: http://www.consular....ov/montreal.asp

This is what the website says:

Individuals applying for U.S. visas at Consulates in Canada must first deposit the fee to the Bank

The deposit slip for your visa application fee consists of 3 pages. A separate set of deposit slips is required for each applicant. Take all three pages of the deposit slip(s) to any branch of Scotia Bank and pay the non-refundable U.S. visa application fee of US$131.00. The payment must be made in either US$ cash, a US$ certified check or a US$ money order; incoming mail deposits and wired deposits are not accepted. The bank teller will stamp all three copies of your receipt and should return two copies to you. You must submit two validated deposit receipts with your visa application.

BTW, ohmy.gif birthday ohmy.gif , just after the interview, so that should be the best birthday gift cool.gif

Our interview takes place January 20th. Just to be 100% certain (because the P4 and consulate website instructions seem to conflict on this matter), can someone who has already completed their interview please confirm that we can pay in cash at the Montreal consulate?

Thanks!

CanadaSponsoring my wife to Canada Ontario Toronto

hi,

I am trying to sponsor my wife to Canada Ontario from Bangladesh since last year july 2012. Her application was sent to the Canada immigration office here in Canada in July 2012. She has got the permanent residency approval to Canada in October 2012 and since then it is been sitting their in Singapore. Its been about 7 months and the canadian Immigration office in Singapore is still working on her file. The last time I heard from them they said that her application is in the review process and that was about 5 months ago. They had also mentioned that the her application approval my take from 12 to 24 months. Is there anyone out there who is or has faced this problem? Is there an way I can expedite her application? Please help.

Thank you.

Canada2010 Tax thread - For Canada and the U.S.
Spoom, just saw your post on the other thread that you want merged here --

If you did not have an income here, you dont need to file taxes. I remember in 2009, I got the US tax booklet mailed to my Canadian address from the US for the 2008 tax year, even though I had not lived in the US for a year and had no income. Asked the accountant (hubby) what to do and he looked it up and said to just ignore it. As I did not work, I dont have to file taxes. I could have filled out the 1040NR and put zero in everything but I elected not to do that... and so far Im not in jail and have gotten residency, so I should be okay...? :D

CanadaSocial Security Card Bah Humbug!
Unfortunately, it seems like not everyone is up to date with immigration procedures in local offices like the SSN and the DMV. Its really annoying but theres nothing we can do. In my case, the woman wont even try. She just went on and on and on that USCIS hasnt changed me so she cant... in a very loud voice so everyone was eavesdropping on us tongue.gif

Sorry to hear your troubles Buggles. Hopefully you exchanged your CAD license to a US one before you got married so you can drive. I am about to do that and hope things are smooth sailing when I do...

QUOTE (Sam and Ben @ Dec 13 2009, 10:15 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I could very well be mistaken, as I haven't filed for AOS yet, but don't all of your NOAs (AP, EAD, AOS) come in your married name, so long as that's what you wrote down when filing for it all? That should be proof enough for them that your name has changed according to USCIS as well.

The paperwork hasnt been "touched" yet... and it will prolly take 2-3 months before any of my paperwork is touched or changed by USCIS. My plan is to wait til the EAD or the AP gets in, so I can try another attempt to change into my married name for work/tax purposes.

It was just annoying to get one set of answers on the phone and another in person :/

CanadaSocial Security Card Bah Humbug!
As I went to university in Maryland, I had a social security number and card issued back in 2004.

Anyhow, after me and the hubby tied the knot, I called the 1800 number for the social security card place to inquire on how to change my name on the card. Some customer service person told me to bring my marriage license, ID with my maiden name and fill out a form and just request a name change in my local social security office.

So I went to the office last Thursday and brought my passport with visa/I-94, Canadian driver's license, marriage license and the form they wanted me to fill out. And when I got to the local agent/personnel, I was told that I cant get my name changed until I get my GC. She said that USCIS has not updated my file yet and so my number is "locked" in my maiden name and can't be changed to my married name.

Anyway I hope this doesnt affect my AOS... I dont think Ill get my GC until spring, and I dont know if USCIS will update my information while processing my application.

Bah.

My biggest advice is really to expect the WORST. Just try to plan as though the interviews not there -- dont try to quit your jobs, dont send all your winter clothes to the US like I did, dont anticipitate that it will be fast. I think we did and we were so disappointed. Goodluck to all of you waiting, and really, the wait and all the annoyances in between, is really worth it because you will eventually be together. *big hugs*

The waiting sucks because you cant make plans...

But you know what sucks more than waiting for an interview?

Waiting for Canada Post to find your package that is in their system... because the simplest part of this whole procedure, they still manage to #### up.

Danu, the last time I slept before our interview was Tues and that was because of Nyquil and a fever tongue.gif The night before my bus trip to Montreal, I even took some Nyquil to rest and did not even shut my eyes the entire evening! I was sooooo nervous, I could not eat, I was literally shaking with nervous energy.

We brought almost 5 pounds worth of evidence, every official document Ive had since I became an adult, every utility bill, mortgage payment, checking account balance and pay stub my fiance owns and 3 copies of everything.

My interview experience was sooo smooth. If you go through the list that I put up and KnJ edited (she bold faced the documents they will take) and the list from the sheet they will give you (which KnJ also posted), you will do extremely well!

I kind of wish I wasnt sooo nervous so I could have savored the experience! And seriously, you will do awesome because you have everyone of us rooting for you!

Goodluck to you and all those still interviewing!

The girl I talked to said that my letter was being sent or has been sent or getting ready to be sent (somewhere along those lines). Haha, I definitely forgot that New Moon was coming out that day... Woo.

I definitely surprised Ben... Called him after work and I told him that I couldn't visit for Thanksgiving... that HE had to come to see ME before that for our interview! Yay.

There are a ton of us for the 20th. Pretty neat.

Called for my medical... They scheduled it for 7am... and I was so blinded by the fact that I had my interview that I didn't think about the four hour drive ahead of that... So I've called and left a message to see if I can possibly get one later in the day, haha.

Congrats to everyone scheduled! And definitely crossing fingers for those of you still waiting.

Hmm are you doing a medical in downtown TO? I think they only schedule medicals for 2 or 3 hours every day or something. Its really a VERY fast procedure, but expect to wait so much the entire thing might take 45 minutes. As far as I know, there are no pm appointments.

If youre doing yours downtown TO, I can help you figure out parking, etc.
