I was planning on introducing stuffed peppers to the husband's very limited dietary experience tonight, but since my avocados have fully ripened, I am making some Mexican inspired dinner instead. I am going to make quesadilla, grill some chicken, make guacamole and salsa!

So the official breakfast for dinner menu is chocolate chip pancakes, bread pudding (just cause we have left over panettone and I looove eating bread pudding straight from the fridge), cheese omelet and hot coco. I wish we had bacon but hubby and I agreed to be healthier this year, so we have thrown away all the bad foods away (or I ate them already so they are all bye-bye).

Buuut, I am soo craving for spinach lasagna and I dont have the ingredients for it :(

It's so awesome having him here and he is not working. I come home and the house is picked up, the dishes are washed, the laundry is semi-folded, the beds are made, and I have a gorgeous man to come home to! I could get used to my "house husband."

My husband tells me the same thing! One night he took my hand and said, "Im just so glad youre here now. I was so lost without you" *giggle*

Now if I can only train him to do the house stuff when -I- start working :P

Tonight I've decreed that we are having breakfast for dinner!

ok can someone tell me if I am crazy or not..lol but I was reading that it isn't good to reheat spinach....

I was thinking of stir-frying the spinach up with some bell pepper and squash for dinner tonight but since hubby won't be eating dinner til later he would have to reheat it..

Not sure if there is a biological reaction of reheating spinach... but it does get wilt-ier and gross when reheated :P Would you consider tossing the spinach when you reheat the rest of the veggies instead? Spinach will cook down in 2-3 minutes I think.

Tonight I am making New Years Eve dinner for my in-laws (yes, including the WIL, we are at a somewhat truce right now...). Am serving pasta tossed in a mushroom cream sauce, roasted veggies, chicken breast stuffed with goat cheese (and mozzarella for the hubby) and little pizzas! Am really excited, been cleaning the house for two days.

Tomorrow night, am having my aunt's family and grandmother over for an early supper -- making spicy sausage penne, honey sesame chicken wings and mashed potatoes.

Off to buy some alcohol now! smile.gif

I've changed a lot in more meaningful ways, but I think that's mainly due to being married and having a baby on the way, and less about living in the US.

CanadaWhen visiting Canada....
Last June, we drove up to Toronto for my brother's graduation. We bought him an Asus tablet that was about 500 bucks. My husband told the border patrol person that it was a gift for his graduation, declared the amount and I was SURE we would have to pay taxes. But the guy just waved us through. While I think it's important to be honest and follow the gift guidelines at all times, I also think that enforcing the guidelines greatly depends on the CBP officer you talk to :)

CanadaCrossing border as a teacher during summer
Border patrol may also just be curious about you being a teacher. When I crossed the border, I was a grad student doing bacteria genetics, and they always had questions about it -- mostly just what I do and what I have to take, etc.

I also found it helpful to bring documents such as mortgage or work contract, in case they want to see proof that you are returning back.

CanadaWhat Are You Reading?

I just finished that! It was excellent. I plan on going to see the movie this week and I'll see if they have done a good job of being faithful to the book. I highly recommend this book to everyone - it is unexpected and haunting (pun intended) not in a bad way but a very thought-provoking way.

Isnt it a really well written book? I found it funny and sad and really deep. And I also found the focus to be very different... I was surprised at how much I loved it.

My MIL read good reviews about the movie... but I think that it will deviate from the book storyline... tell me about it when youve seen it ok :D

CanadaFellow Canadian VJers removing Conditions..

You can ask them to redo the card correctly. While the call center person on the phone may not think it is a problem, you need to have your green card agree with your identification. So, if you do not use your maiden name as your middle name and it isn't identified elsewhere, then I would suggest you have them correct it. You would file the I-90 and there would be no fee since it is their error. Take a photocopy of the card because you will need to send it back with the application. In the meantime, you can make an infopass appointment to have an I-551 stamp placed in your passport to show you are indeed a permanent resident.

My maiden name is on my current passport, but not on my SSN card (it is on the SSN that is under my maiden name) and my driver's license. I think I will take your advice and do this.

Should I make the info pass appointment first? Or send the card back and do it after? What would you suggest?

CanadaFellow Canadian VJers removing Conditions..
Got the GC in the mail today!

And there is a problem -- my "middle name" on the green card is my "maiden name".

For example:

If my name was Jane Ann Doe before I got married, and after I got married I am Jane Ann Smith

On my conditional green card, my name was "Jane Ann Smith"

On the 10 year GC, it is "Jane Doe Smith"

So I spent 20 minutes on the phone with USCIS because I wanted to know if this will be a problem. The lady on the phone had me explain the situation at least 10 times... but she went out of her way to find out the answer, and she said it is not a problem.

So WOOHOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

So.. while I'm prepared to duck at the things being tossed at me by those of you waiting longer...

Somehow, my 10yr Green Card was ordered today.

Congrats!

Thanks HB and SDW!

To be honest, while the wait was long, it didn't bother me as much as the wait for the I-129F. At least at this point, we are all waiting with our significant others, in our new home, with our new families. I certainly did not feel the same loneliness and anxiety I felt waiting for package 3 or not knowing when the Montreal interview would be scheduled. That wait seemed so endless, especially since Red and I were apart.

Regardless, I am relieved this part is done because I am taking a trip overseas in January. I am also glad it got done before the elections. Seriously.

Got a text message from USCIS yesterday at 3 am in the morning - the 10-year GC was finally mailed :)

Good luck to everyone else getting their conditions removed. Stay strong!

Staying at the Hotel Gouverneur Place Dupuis. Booked through Priceline ($100/night, but I messed up, probably could have gotten it cheaper). Was a bit wary after reading reviews, but the place is awesome! It's very clean, nice view of the city. Maybe 15-20 minute walk to the consulate, but also right at Berri-UQAM metro station.

Be careful if you're walking around the city, there's lots of road construction, especially around Ste-Catherine - I broke the heel off my shoe walking back from the consulate.

CanadaGreencard holder with expired foreign passport. Can I travel to Canada by land?
A valid green card is enough to travel to Canada by land. How do I know? Just last week I was on the bus from Rochester to Toronto and I was sitting next to a guy from Turkey who is a permanent resident of the US. All that Canadian customs wanted from him was his green card (he was being interviewed right next to me). He didn't even have his Turkish passport with him. As he told me later, he travels on that route on the regular basis and said that he never had any problems...again, this applies only to land border crossing not flying.

CanadaDoes USA has TFSA saving accounts?
I agree with Sapphire. I am totally paperless on all my bills, credit cards, retirement accounts and bank accounts in the U.S., with the exception of my water bill. In Canada, I could only get paperless on some stuff and although my banking was paperless, I couldn't get an actual statement online (TD Canada Trust). I found that to be strange...

I've had the opposite experience. I'm completely paperless in the US, including my credit cards. In Canada, they refuse to let me go paperless for my line of credit or credit card. They say that anything 'debt' related must stay paper in Canada - it's such a waste because i don't even open my statements anymore, I pay everything online so I just look at all my accounts online anyways. It's so lame.

CanadaDoes USA has TFSA saving accounts?
Nope...I've never heard of such a thing in the U.S. You will always be taxed on any interest gained unless it's a special account such as an IRA or some sort of educational type thing.

I believe Canada has TFSA(tax free saving accounts) accounts for the last three years or so and I was wondering if they have the same type of account in US banks.I'm not refering to IRA retirement accounts etc...Looking for equvilant of TFSA in USA side.

Thnx

my fiance and I want to marry he is American and I am Canadian....he has 2 children he has custody of and cant move to Canada....we want to marry in Canada and then when the paperwork is taken care of me to move to the States...what steps do we need to take for him to be able to come for a visit so we can marry

I don't think any visa is necessary ( assuming your fiance is US CITIZEN ). Just check your provincial marriage license requirements.

From our experience - option of marrying in Canada [ I'm speaking of ON, the other provinces might be different ] is more bureaucratic and takes significantly more time, so we got married in the US.

I don't have the link, however, individuals coming from countries with national health coverage are considered insured for health care costs. It appears that if you have existing insurance prior to being enrolled in a policy in the US, then they can't exempt you from covering pre-existinng conditions.

This is what I am trying to find a proof for. I can hardly believe HIPPA explicitly states this about non-US health insurances but would be glad to have somebody prove I am wrong.

Once the full extent of the new health care law comes into effect, they won't be able to deny you coverage although they may make the premiums exorbitant.

Sorry, Kathryn, this is just plain incorrect. The whole idea of this clause in PPACA is that the insurers issuing individual policies to a person with chronic condition WILL BE PROHIBITED from charging higher prices. It will work the same way as nowadays works with the group insurance where the premium doesn't depend on your health condition...

Of course, this will hold true if our Republican folks won't be able to kill the law one way or another...

Thanks a lot, david'sgirl! That's very helpful to know!

This is what I am trying to understand - is it really REQUIRED from insurers to cover such immigrants ( by HIPPA or any other legislation ) or is it case-by-case and a goodwill of a particular insurance company?..

We recently had not-so-good experience with BCBS insuring my stepson. We were honest and stupid by disclosing his minor toe fracture happened a couple of months prior and completely healed by the moment we applied. As a result, the premium jumped about 150% ( i.e. 2.5 times ) I pressed the agent really hard demanding to explain to me how a completely healed trauma ( not ongoing chronic condition ) can cause such a jump and his reply was - "this is according to the actuary company BCBS is using... ask them".

for ex my daughter is 23 and we just found out she can remain in her father's plan until she is 26 in anticipation of the new legislation.

For the record - this is not "in anticipation", this provision has been in effect since Sept. '10 ( unless the insurer had a special waiver )

I am assuming he is on a pump? If you get it through a specialty pharmacy vendor it will be less. If you can give me the specifics (model #, number of each supply, your insurance co, PPO network, pharmacy and state I can get pretty accurate estimate)
btw I am a nurse (since 83)and have been working for an insurance company dealing with ERISA/self funded plans for over 10 yrs- feel free to PM me.

Please share your findings... it would be helpful for other people as well, not just for the OP... thanks!

But since he is coming from a country that has a national health plan he is covered by the HIPPA laws.

That's an interesting statement. I would greatly appreciate if you can provide a link to the provision in the HIPPA that gives such a protection to the immigrants from the countries with socialized healthcare. Seriously, it would be of big help.

Eek! Yeah just for myself, with no medical issues I pay $200/mo, so I just have a nightmare scenario playing around in my head for once I add him on. I've already double checked about the pre-existing condition. What is ironic is that because I hadn't had insurance for a while, I have to wait a year for any preexisting conditions to be covered, yet he will be covered immediately Luckily, if nothing else, he's not pregnant :P

When you're saying you have "private" insurance, do you mean individual or group policy? If former, please tell us the name of such a generous insurance company who would cover a diabetic spouse? Did you tell them he had diabetes and they gave you a quote?? Many insurers just won't issue the policy to a person with diabetes - 'deemed uninsurable".

As to the covering supplies - you need to carefully check your policy "Exclusion & limitation" section, as well as "DME annual limits" ( pump supplies might be treated either as DME, or as regular drugs; insulin almost always is treated like a usual brand name drug ), Also, it's necessary to know what state you are from - some states mandate certain level of coverage for diabetics.

I sincerely feel for you guys. Hopefully, you know what you're doing...
