CanadaWorst Excuse you have EVER given for not being able to go to work...
Heh, not an excuse for not showing up rather, but kind of in the same category. I was working in a call centre and our "managers" were these stupid kids still in high school who really enjoyed the "power" they held...I was a little bit late coming in to work. legitimately because of the subway. They asked why I didnt call. I told them I asked the conductor if I could use his "phone" but they didn't let me. It shut them up and I ended up using that like many times LOL

I've never used the death in the family excuse, but I have definitely used the Sick Family member line.

I was also surprised about the cheques here. A friend of ours pays at target and Kroger and such with them. The first time I saw it I was very confused! Same thing with paying bills by cheque. I found that very odd, yet Im still trying to convince him to send all the papers back that they send with the bill IN with his payment. Way too much garbage being mailed to us!! Take it back!

LOL this is true. TTC Compared to COTA is like a dream. (COTA is Central Ohio Transit Authority) It runs around Ohio State University and other than that, nowhere else. When in Columbus, I miss ttc like no tomorrow. When in Toronto, I miss Buddy (read: I miss Buddy's car LOL!) At the same time, I miss having the ability to walk out my front door and catch a bus 24 hours a day. It really is a case of I want my cake and to eat it to smile.gif

My sister lived in Ottawa for about 4 or 5 years with her now husband and Ive heard horror stories about how they'd had so many accidents hitting pedestrians. Is it as bad as I've heard?

Here ya go! ( I can't find a part that sounds like upsetting cows, I had to check. I love this song!)

The Proclaimers

I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) Lyrics

When I wake up yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who wakes up next to you
When I go out yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who goes along with you

If I get drunk yes I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who gets drunk next to you
And if I haver yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's havering to you

But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked 1000 miles
To fall down at your door

When I'm working yes I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's working hard for you
And when the money comes in for the work I'll do
I'll pass almost every penny on to you

When I come home yeah I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who comes back home to you
And if I grow old well I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's growing old with you

But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked 1000 miles
To fall down at your door

When I'm lonely yes I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man whose lonely without you
When I'm dreaming yes I know I'm gonna dream
Dream about the time when I'm with you.

But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked 1000 miles
To fall down at your door

CanadaThe Annoying Co-Worker Thread
Man theres some good stories in here!!

My favourite annoying co-worker was the Constant Adjuster. This guy could not stop adjusting his package and Im not talking about the one from UPS or FedEx. Every 30 seconds hed be moving it around or whatever. Even in front of possible and current clients! (It was a Banquet Hall) I mean, for gods sake, leave it alone!! At least out in public!

CanadaDon't you love it when...
My other half is a big fan of Hunts Ketchup for some reason and doesnt even consider the HCFS. I wonder if he'll notice the difference up in Toronto. One thing he's rather excited about is Canadian Mcdonalds. He loves it and thinks its so much better than McD's in Columbus. He rarely eats it when hes home, but In Toronto, he eats it more often than not!

PS Thanks for the well wishes smile.gif Words can not describe the excitement. Of course it might take a while for him to get up there, Im thinking October if I'm lucky, but he qualifies quite easily for a TN visa up there, and as well falls under the Software Specialist catagory for Skilled workers. His chances of getting a visa is much easier than mine. Woooot! (I'm totally over indulging in apartment and job hunting already LOL)

Don't you love it when your bf finds 5-packs of your favourite choc. bar (Crunchie) for 2 bucks each and brings home 4 packs!!! LOL!!

Don't you love it when after over a year of extended visits to Columbus, and him coming to TO, he decides hes going to tap into the critical shortage of software developers in Canada and start applying for a work permit, and apartment hunting for us in Toronto!!!!

I'm super super super duper excited!!!!!

Wow! Reading all this made me feel sooo much better! We're back and forth from Toronto quite a bit, but for the most part Ive been staying in Columbus. It was really hard to go from having 24 hour transportation at my door to their system...If theres anything I felt I lost most, it was my independence. Not being able to go where I want when I want, not having a job and making my own money to do things. My other half hooked me up with a friend of his who was looking for a babysitter during the week, so I've picked that up, however my social life now consists of my bf, and a 2 year old. Love her to bits, but the homesick bug definitely bites!

CanadaCanadianisms
mmmmmmmmmm Tim Hortons! Im in Columbus Ohio, and there is far from a shortage of it here, thank god!

One thing I will never get used to is the biscuit and sauce type thing breakfast at Mcdonalds. I tried it once and still feel sick thinking about it! Blech!
I do miss Ruffles Salt n Vinegar chips a lot and Ontario wine. Fortunately, extremely affordable prices and ease of which to purchase ..wine here kind of makes up for it!

CanadaHow long did your honeymoon phase last?
So weird, that this comes up today. Just the other day, after a trivial argument was resolved, we came to the conclusion that indeed, Our Honeymoon phase either is ending or has ended, and we're okay with it. And we haven't even decided which visa were going to try for yet! It hasn't even been a year yet! BUT! We've been together so much, both here and in Toronto, we've had the opportunity to slip into a normal, healthy pattern, and are growing and changing along with the relationship. I think this is how I know that he and I are very good together. Ive never had somebody so willing to talk things out and discuss how the argument started or what provoked it, hes just soo kind and understanding and open to all possibilities. Healthiest relationship Ive ever had BY FAR. He surprises me every day with how awesome he is biggrin.gif

(Hmm reading all this, it completely sounds like I am still in the Honeymoon phase!)

CanadaRemembrance Day
I'm noticing the same thing about my boyfriend...they didn't do as much in school as I did growing up. We had assemblies and everything that we had to attend, every year, with a moment of silence at 11:11am, he said they had no such thing. We even had some of the kids grandfathers who were war vets come to talk to us about some of their experiences. He and some friends of mine also didn't know about the whole Poppy aspect and what it meant. (They did however catch on quickly to the child-like habit of using the poppies as fake lips, go figure!)

Does Karaoke count? Before I got together with BB, I could tell you 3 different bars on each night of the week where it was and which shows were better. I love going out and singing and wish the Karaoke scene in Columbus was half as good here as it is in Toronto. Apparently I'm pretty good too tongue.gif My specialties? 80's and 90's tunes you'd completely forgotten about tongue.gif

laughing.gif Interesting!

I'm also a musician myself, playing piano, guitar and vocal. I went to an Arts highschool that I had to audition to get into. It was a lot of fun.

Jednite-I am glad I am reminding you to write more. I used to write every day and actually published a book of poetry, a tiny one, on my experiences going back from Canada to the US. But if you love to write, write!! It's taken me about 2 years to get back into the swing of things and it has not been easy.

I lived kind of close to an Arts Highschool..Unionville High. I grew up in the eastern part of Richmond Hill. Was it that one? hehe that would be kind of cool!

I have a video of me singing some "Holdin out for a Hero" on my fb..ill fish for the link later as Im about to eat some dinner smile.gif

CanadaExtension of Stay??
Thanks everybody for their input. To clarify a few things, I do work in Toronto. I work in hospitality and have shifted to catering. Right now, the job is completely flexible. They send out an email with available shifts and you sign up for the ones you can or want to work. First come first serve basis. So when Im there, I can work as much as I want, and they dont care if you arent there. And during peak seasons the financial opportunity is awesome. I have my degree in f&B management, but under the TN, I dont qualify. In the hospitality field, they only offer Hotel Managers TN Visas. I already checked it out tongue.gif

Up until this point we've always done exactly what you suggested, say Im visiting my SO and staying for so long, and this is how I'm getting back and its been smooth sailing. With the exception of the last time....I could be paranoid but it seems like he was asking more questions. And he seemed to be entering my info. Im just worried that they flagged me! Ive heard horror stories about that and the last thing I want is to be banned. That would totally suck!!

Thanks also for the info on the I94. Its what I assumed, but I just wanted to be sure smile.gif
