Asia: East and PacificShipping Company Reccommendation from Japan?
I've got a quote from Economove Japan and Shipmates Worldwide Moving before.
I am not sure their services are good, but it was definitely cheaper than major companies like Kuroneko Yamato.
Reading posts in gaijinpot.com, those two seem to be good though.

We ended up using the Japan Post for two reasons.
1) Everything we ship fits in cardboard boxes.
2) We have to go pick up boxes from a port, that's 4 hours away from our place if we choose the moving company.
We could use their port-to-door service, but it was over our budget :-(

I translated my koseki on my own and had no problem.

It might be helpful to check the the embassy Tokyo website.
They have the format for koseki at http://tokyo.usembas...fhhregister.pdf
The website also has information regarding Japanese notaries.
Take a look at the bottom of this page at http://tokyo.usembas...tacs-7126a.html

Asia: East and PacificRequired to pay Japanese income tax on US earnings?
Hi Deryck,

Japanese income tax is incurred when you have a domicile in Japan or have been residing in Japan for one year or more.
Once your fiancee loses her domicile, she is not subject to Japanese tax on her US income.
Just pay Japanese tax on Japanese income and US tax on US income for 2009.

I am no expert on this, but you can try a local FBI office to report the parental kidnapping.
If she takes the child back to her country, there is almost no way taking the child back since Vietnam isn't a signatory country of the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction.

Vietnamese citizens have to get a tourist visa at the Japanese embassy in Vietnam, while US citizens can get into Japan through VWP.
Please take a look at the website of the Japanese embassy. They have information of visas for Vietnamese citizens.

If you need it ASAP, it's better go apply for one to a local SSA office.
Some get a SSN right after the entry to the US, but somehow others have to wait months.

Bali isn't a rural area, so I think she will get the packet soon.
It's been a little over 10 days.
Wait one more week or so, and if she still doesn't get it you can request for mailing status or resent the whole packet (assuming you made a copy of it?)

NOA2 is a Notice of Action form (I-797 Form) that USCIS mails you after your petition has been approved.

I am not familiar with weddings in Indonesia, but if the religious ceremony is considered an official marriage in the country, it is also official in the US. In that case, you cannot enter the US with K-1 because you are already married.

In addition to the petition fee, you need to pay $131 for the interview and $1010 for AOS (=GC).
I know you are confused and probably overwhelmed, but read the VJ guidelines and instruction of K-1 forms carefully.

Asia: East and PacificTokyo Embassy Interview Question
It depends on the interviewer. Some ask you which language you prefer, and the others don't.
My interviewer (White American officer) started off in Japanese without asking me which language I prefer, but switched to English as soon as he realized I speak decent English.

They ask you pretty straightforward questions like how you met your fiancee, how the relationship has developed, names of your fiancee's family members, etc..
If he doesn't have any problem communicating with you in English, he would likely to have no problem at the interview.

Good luck!

what's the word with the PCC?

Police Clearace Certificate

We call it police certificate in Japan, but I guess it is called police clearace certificate in some other countries. I often see the word used in other forums.

Hi everyone, not sure if this the right forum but here goes. My gf is aiming to come over from Japan to the US on a K-1 visa. We received the NOA2 on 8/2 and she's at the point where she's almost ready to schedule an interview at the embassy in Japan. However her 1-year stay in Canada is still requiring her to get a Canadian police certificate according to the checklist. Unfortunately we didn't plan ahead for this, and now we're not sure we can get this in time, as I've read of a 120 day processing time for applicants outside of Canada looking to get this certificate. The standard way is for her to get fingerprints done in Japan, then to send the prints and her request to some office in Canada. I was hoping to see if anyone out there has had to deal with this problem and whether they found a way to either get this done quicker than the 120 day turnaround time (outside of getting on a plane and doing it in person in Canada) or whether it's possible to work around getting it done at all. I'm really open to suggestions and appreciate any advice anyone can give. This site has helped me a lot up until now, so I was just hoping someone out there might have any experience with this too. Thank you everyone for all the past help as well as anything anyone can provide here.

This digital fingerprinting sounds a lot faster than the snail mail process for PCC from Canada.

Thank you for the information. I did read about some travel restrictions with the CR1/IR1 while the visa is being processed ... there seems to be quite a number of different experiences that I've read on the forums here. From the information I've gathered so far for the K-1 visa, there aren't really any restrictions (i.e. she could even come visit right now while we're waiting on the NOA2); the prerogative for entry into the United States seems to lie solely in the hands of the Immigration Officer. I'm debating on calling the Embassy in Tokyo to find out concretely.

The answer is on the website of the US embassy Japan.

Yumi loves the U.S. and wants to stay here, but she is not interested in naturalization either. If she were to become an American citizen, she would lose her pension.

Now, if we have kids, I guess they have to choose between American or Japanese Citizenship by their 20th birthday, right? It would be interesting to see what choice they make.

Johnny, if I am not mistaken, they need to make the decision by their 22nd birthday.
I hope Japanese government changes the law in near future so that we, the Japanese citizens, can have dual/multiple citizenship.
I am not planning to be naturalized at least for now for the exact same reason as your wife...

anyone can tell me if he can get his police certificate at the city hall? or does he have to go to the police station?

A city/town police station doesn't issue a police certificate.
He needs to go to a prefecture police headquarter.
Check with their website or call and ask them what to bring.
The requirement is different depending on the prefecture.

A question for those that have gone through the interview process in Tokyo: I am going to Japan to be with my fiancee during the interview process. Does anyone know if I can go into the actual interview with her? The consulate info page on VJ seems to suggest that I can, but I wanted to see if anyone had actually done it.

Thanks!

Yes, you can.
There are usually many USC fiance(e)s/spouses accompanying their non-USC partner for the final interview.
Make sure you bring your official ID so you can get into the embassy.

My wife told her company that she would be moving to the US and would be quitting but she gave them a good 7 months of notice. Even then they wanted her to finish the year with them. Still she left under good circumstances. We are going back for New Years and she is staying thru January, she mentioned that to a friend who works in the same department she did (as she wanted to get together for dinner with her) and she was offered a short term (1 week) job during January to help with end of year accounting stuff. But from what I have heard from many others that isn't the most common place. I have heard a lot of horror stories about employment in Japan. Mostly having to do with foreign workers at Japanese companies but also heard a few about Japanese workers.

Thanks you two. My fiance is in a similar situation as osakalove's fiance. I have been telling her the same thing, but her boss is very degrading telling how childish and selfish that she is. It makes her start feeling guilty, but I have been telling here the same stuff as you and more. She finally went in and told them she might just stop showing up, but they were telling her they would call her and come to her house, blah, blah, blah and try to make her come back. She is starting to get more aggravated at them and starting to take the more "American Culture Approach".

Too bad many companies don't comply with the labor law. According to it, you can quit your job 14 days after the resignation notice even the company doesn't agree with it. If they don't let you quit, the labor standards supervision office (roudou kijun kantokusho) would be a good place to get help.

QUOTE (Mike & Sachie @ Oct 26 2009, 01:13 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I can see a Tokyo embassy appointment on the horizon, and I'd like to prepare the required documents for the embassy interview. Most original documents, like marriage cert., PCC, I"ll be sending in with the DS-230, and will be forwarded to the embassy from NVC. Obviously Sachie will need to take in medical results/forms, a passport, and I believe a passport photo. Other than "evidence of relationship" proof which Tokyo embassy apparently never looks at, what are the *required* documents for an interview at the Tokyo embassy? I read in so many posts that people "took medical forms and other required documents" to the interview, and I'm trying to figure out what are those other documents. I'm sure we'll get a notice from NVC or embassy stating what the list of documents is, I'm just trying to prepare ahead of time. Thanks.
