Eight days is probably not enough between your medical and your interview, incidentally. The nurse told my fiance that it would take 10 or so. They did say that if the results weren't back in time for the interview, they'd fax them to Vancouver, though -- but you won't get the visa until they get them there.

My advice is definitely to have all your paperwork together. There was a lady interviewing at the same time we were, who was missing a police report from another country, as well as her children's passports. She seemed very disorganized, and it was a rather unpleasant experience to watch, much less to be subject to.

CanadaBooking flights
We just had our interview in Vancouver on Tuesday. All the visa recipients appeared to receive their visas at 3, not 2. We wound up having to stop by and get fingerprints done at 3, and we don't have the visa yet -- they'll send it instead. Leave some time in the afternoon in case something odd comes up as it did with us. 6pm ought to be alright, as long as you have your things together and have a plan to get to the airport.

So there was no line up outside?


actually there were 4 different lines.

1) 9:30am appointments
2) 10:00am appointments
3) 10:30am appointments
4) ACS (which I gather was for american citizens)

actually it was rather comfusing because I thought I had read on VJ that K-1ers were suppose to go to the ACS line that was why I had popped my head in to ask where I was suppose to go. I eventually ended up in the 10:00am line so I guess they don't put us in a different line in Vancouver ...

Yeah I thought I read that too. Hmmm well good to know. Congrats again.


When I was there a couple of weeks ago, there were lines for each different appointment time, but the security guard pulled the K-visas (it was just us at that time) out of the 10:00 line before we went in, and put us in a separate one. We got rock star treatment and got to go ahead of all the other 10:00 appointments.

Our visa was issued Wednesday (finally! Two weeks after our Vancouver interview!) and hit the Vancouver post office Thursday afternoon, according to XpressMail tracking. Scott needs his passport and visa Tuesday morning if he's going to make the one-way flight that we foolishly scheduled before the interview occurred.

That leaves Monday.

How reliable is XpressMail? Does mail travel over the weekend? (I know it isn't delivered. :)) Is his visa going to get there Monday as estimated?

I will have pulled out all my hair by the time he gets here, I'm afraid.

The requirements for a marriage license, of course, vary from state to state. Texas, for instance, does require an SSN. Not that it applies to your case, but I wanted to make that clear for anyone else who might be reading and wondering. :)

CanadaComing into America during K-1 process
We all have different experiences, of course, but I generally faced more scrutiny at the Canadian border than my fiance ever did at the US border. There are never any guarantees, but most likely you'll be able to visit. Bring a lease, verification of employment, etc., and if it's feasible, go through one of the Canadian POEs (like Toronto or Calgary) if you're flying in.

When is the wedding date?

The marriage would be legal whether ya had the visa or not. We got married before we filed anything

It's august 26.
We don't plan on getting the legal wedding, just doing the religious ceremony (unless he has his visa) I just want to know if it's allowed to come in for that and go back without voiding the visa or having to start the process over again, etc.


Be very careful. If it looks like a wedding and smells like a wedding, in the mind of the USCIS, it's a wedding.

I definitely agree: go with your gut instinct on this. If you think giving lots of notice isn't going to be to your benefit, then wait until you know exactly when you're leaving to tell them (assuming you leave yourself the customary period of time, of course).

CanadaSo, how does everyone carry the super-huge x-ray?
It was such a pain to carry! We wound up carrying it (with the sealed envelope some of the time) all day around Vancouver, and then my husband had to carry it when he traveled to the U.S., too. We rolled it up and tried not to bend it too much. No one's ever looked at it yet. :)

PS - it is at 10:AM. Should I show up at 10 or earlier? I seem to recall posts that people show up early and get in line, or did I make that up?



That works at other embassies sometimes, but not at Vancouver. :) Show up at 9:45 or so, and you'll be all good. The guards will let you into the K-visa line when they see your x-ray envelope.

We sure wished we could have gone to Calgary for my husband's (then-fiancee's) K-1 interview! It was much closer to Saskatoon than Vancouver was.

Anyway, Vancouver was nice, if overwhelming. We would've liked it more if our visa interview had been more straightforward. As it was, he had to be fingerprinted and our decision was delayed a couple of weeks, so we were pretty stressed out.

My fiance is ordering his birth certificate in Saskatchewan Health. The choices he has are:

Small Certificate (9.5 cm x 6.4 cm)

* Contains the individual’s full name, date of birth, place of birth, sex, registration number and registration date.
* View Sample of a Small Birth Certificate

Frame Certificate (21.6 cm x 17.8 cm)

* Contains the individual’s full name, date of birth, place of birth, sex, registration number and registration date as well as the parents’ full names and their province/state or country of birth.
* View Sample of a Frame Birth Certificate

Certified Photocopy of Birth Registration (21.5 cm x 35.4 cm)

* Contains all of the information that appears on the original birth registration.
