Middle East and North AfricaAm just beside myself
This lawyer was a real peice of work. But I had a lawyer that did immigration on the side that gave me a 30 minute call about his opion on Arabian men. And then told me that i can come and pay him $150 a half hour to learn more about my scandalous life. Proud to say I did not need his services. But i am not sure what your fincial situation is, it is not my business. But I have learned that since there not living with us and there income does not interwine with ours. That is is a lot easier to say that yes i am married but seperated. It is just a legal term but legal and means his fiances do not overlap with yours anymore. I have learned this through my finacel lawyer. Maybe this can help you.

I contacted a lawyer today for some advice on my finances......and I was just taken so off guard....we were on the phone for about 20 minutes....and this is no exaggeration when I say that about 17 minutes of that phone consult was about how once my husband comes here and gets his greencard, that he is going to divorce me, and use me for everything I got. I can't believe a consult that was supposed to be about my finances turned out to be him telling me that I need to leave this marriage. He started asking me how long we were together, how we met, if he was muslim, where he was from, who's idea it was to get married, if my family or friends knew about this marriage...the list goes on and on....he made a comment that I must have heard all of this from friends and family, and I said actually, no, because I have a lot of support from them.

He proceeded to say that it boggles his mind that nobody in my family or friends have told me to run from him. He told me he has been practicing law for many years, and has seen it all. So he kept saying his advice would be to leave him, because the whole situation stinks to high hell.

Then, after all of this, he told me two conditions upon hiring him...1: that he is very casual when he is out of the courtroom, and 2: that if I hire him, he will be blunt about how he feels about my situation, and will continue to tell me to run, run the other way!

I don't think I have ever been so utterly humiliated. At this moment, I am feeling embarrassed, shut down, and like a fool...I just wanted to share this, because I don't want to tell my husband about this.

I have to add that after he found out where my husband was from, that is when he really got on how he wants me nothing for the greencard...when he told me how shocked he was that my family didn't stop me from marrying my husband, I told him my mom was an immigrant, and that they are very open-minded...he then proceeded to say that he was an immigrant also, from england. Then when asking me if my husband sends me money, I told him money can't leave morocco unless under very strict circumstances, he said that he doesn't know international law well, but that was the most fishy and ridiculous thing he has ever heard...

If the documents was part of the reason for AP, i am sure you 2 would of gotten a second interview, so they had a chance to review them. So your a step closer, I hope he gets his visa fast.

I know AP for Egypt is normal, however some people are lucky enough to not get it, and I didn't say the reason we got AP was because of them not having our documents, I stated I felt it was part of the reason, meaning along with the background checks that they have to do. No CO is going to issue a visa 10 minutes after receiving the documents and not having time to review them when normally they have them 2 weeks or longer in advance and have time to review and do any background checks at the embassy level that they need too. The embassy made a mistake and scheduled our interview when they should not have, and for that reason they were not prepared when we showed up on our scheduled date and time.

That was what i was saying is that it is normal for Egypt. If they were concerned about there documents then, then would of gotten AP with a second interview date. So it is great news for them really . But i am surprised they were not more interesed with there documents.

That's like saying consulates don't bother to review documents before issuing visas. Completely untrue. What Mandy is experiencing is totally normal. Including that bit (it's kind of like receiving an RFE at the interview).

I really do not think you have AP cuz they did not have your documents. It is more then common to recieve AP (like everyone, almost), they do background checks on everyone. And if he has a common name it can take longer for AP. So just know that what you are going through is normal.

Thanks Andrea!! :) You have been a great support, thanks for everything (F)

I remember the CO was very friendly with us, making jokes and laughing, and surprisingly we both were not that nervous. All the information she provided to us was on her own, we didn't ask any questions, so part of me feels like she wasn't just telling us that to shut us up. Also, our case was hung up at NVC for almost a month because we were in AP, and I'm sure they were doing some checks then too, and I really feel part of the reason for us getting AP has to do with them not having his documents and forms prior to the interview.

I bet living in egypt was great. I could do it in a heart beat, but got my children. But how will living in egypt effect your income taxes needed for the visa process, or do you have a co-sponser???

My hubby and I also met online almost 3 and a half years ago...chatted everyday for hours... I went for a 10 day visit several months later which just validated what I already felt, a couple months later he proposed and about 4 months after that I returned to Egypt and we got married at the ministry of justice. We had a lot of help from his dad and people he knows as far as knowing where to go, what to expect and in getting the documents filled out and pushed through their system..it's all about stamps :P those of you who have already been there know what I'm talking about, I think they issue stamps for everything- ha ha ha..Anyway it all went very smoothly, I arrived on Dec 28th and we were married on December 31, 2008. You should have no trouble as long as they feel and sense your genuine sincerity, I am 11 years older than my husband and it has never once been an issue or even mentioned.
I stayed there with him for 3 months following our marriage, then returned to the States for a little while because he had begun his service obligation. After a few months though, i couldn't take it any longer so I returned to Egypt and lived there from August 09-August 10. The only reason I returned to the States then is to begin this process and get things in order for us here where we want to make our permanent home. We talk for hours still every single day either on the phone or online through chat or skype. I am planning on going for a visit the first week of March....can't wait!!!! Hope to take good news of our I-130 approval with me(certainly hope to have it before that actually). There is not a day that goes by that I don't think or wish I could just hop on a plane and just go back and wait the whole thing out with him, but after lots of research and discussion we both thought that my being here and filing gave us a better chance than staying there and going DCF route.
I love coming here and reading everyone's stories and experiences, although we've never met I feel you are my friends as we share this common bond.

I also have a comment about Wendy's visa stamp info for us spouses going to visit our Egyptian spouses...I wish it were as simple and easy as just showing our marriage certificate and boom we get the stamp :D At least the entry visa process there is not too bad, I've never had any kind of issues with it and I've been 4 times in the last 3 years. I do have a related question though....I have a one year Egyptian residency visa stamp in my passport, it won't expire until June of this year. When I go for my visit in March, can I enter using that or will I have to obtain a new entry visa since I have been outside of the country for 7-8 months by that time? I think I will need the new entry visa but just wondering if any of you know for sure from experience.

Middle East and North AfricaFor any new "Egypt" peeps
The one thing it fails to mention is that you have to take ur passport to a certain building and get a tourist resident stamp, before they will marry you. It does not cost a thing. And the hours there at the minastry of justice is wrong, they only marry between the hours of 9a.m. till 2 p.m. when the translator is there. My husband argued with them the 1st day we arrived at 3p.m. and they said they could not marry us till the next morning. And ladies when you get your paper from the embassy pls make sure your men copy the info that they have to write down correct cuz if not that is a trip to the embassy and they have to stamp the mistake and you have to correct it and it takes a act of congress to get back into the embassy without a appoinment. That is another thing make sure you make a appointment or you can waste valuable time.

Found this site of what needed to get married in Egypt....Goodluck...

(AS OF JULY 1, 2009)
The only legal marriage for foreigners in Egypt is a civil ceremony performed at the local marriage court, which is in accordance with Islamic practice. Persons wishing a religious ceremony may arrange for one separately, but it is the civil ceremony that establishes the legal marriage.

Americans wishing to marry in Egypt must take the following steps in order to marry:
Step 1: Visit the American Citizen Services, U.S. Embassy

Address: 5, Tawfik Diab Street (formerly Latin America Street), Garden City, Cairo.
Appointments: http://cairo.usembas...larappntmnt.htm

At American Citizen Services, you will sign a marriage affidavit that will be notarized by the U.S. Embassy. This affidavit includes your biographic data and your religion. Interfaith marriages are permitted by Egyptian law except in the case of a Muslim woman and a non-Muslim man. The affidavit also mentions that you are free to marry and that the Embassy has no objection to the marriage. Please bring the following:

Your valid American passport
Proof of termination of your last marriage, if you were married before. An original or certified copy of the last divorce decree or death certificate must be submitted. There is no need to get this document authenticated or translated into Arabic for the purpose of marriage. The authentication and translation by the Egyptian embassy or consulate in the U.S. may be required later for other purposes. Please note that if you are a female American citizen previously married, you may only remarry in Egypt at least 90 days after your divorce or 130 days after the death of your former spouse. If you are pregnant, you can only remarry after the birth of the baby.
It is preferable that you bring your fiancé(e).
The fee is $50.00 or 283.00 LE (cash or credit).
If you are a female of Egyptian origin under the age of 21, you are required to either be accompanied by your father, a guardian, a person in loco parentis, or a written consent from any of the above. The consent should be in English and Arabic. It should be notarized by the Egyptian Embassy or an Egyptian consulate in the U.S. and by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Egypt.
NOTE: If two American citizens are getting married, they each need separate statements.

Step 2: After obtaining the notarized statement from the U.S. Embassy, you must visit one of the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Authentication Offices.

Addresses: Ahmed Oraby St, Mohandessin, Giza; Ahmed Said Street, Abbassia; or Sabak Street next to the Maryland Gardens in Heliopolis.

Hours: Saturday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will certify the statement for a fee of 11.00LE.

Step 3: After obtaining the certification from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, you must visit the Egyptian Ministry of Justice.

Address: Egyptian Ministry of Justice Annex (Office of Marriage of Foreigners), 4th floor, Lazoughly Square, Abdin, Cairo. Open Saturday through Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.and from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The Ministry of Justice will register your marriage. Forms to be completed at the marriage court can only be obtained on the wedding day or the day before. The following are required:

Proof of identity (a passport) for both parties, a photocopy of the passport data page, the Egyptian entry visa and the residency stamp if you obtained one.
Egyptian I.D. (Egyptian passport or the National ID) and a photocopy of it if one of the parties is Egyptian
Five personal photos for each party.
A 50.00LE "Ta'meen Igtimaei" stamp (purchased at any Egyptian post office)
Two male witnesses with identification documents (passport or I.D. card) must be present to sign the marriage documents. It is preferable to bring your own witnesses, such as friends or travel agents.
Original proof of termination of previous marriage if you were married before. No authentication or translation is required.
A routine physical exam performed by an Egyptian doctor is sometimes required if the person appears unhealthy.

It will take at least ten business days for a marriage certificate to be issued by the Ministry of Justice. The marriage certificate must be picked up by one of the parties.

Fees to complete the marriage at the Ministry of Justice:

If both parties are Muslim, the fee is two percent of the dowry (a minimum of 40LE).

If both parties are Christians, a dowry is not required, the fee is 35.00LE.

To use the marriage certificate in the U.S., it should be translated into English by the Egyptian Ministry of Justice Translation Office (the fee is 40.00LE). It takes 4-7 days to receive the translation, which must then be authenticated by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (11.00LE) and authenticated by the American Citizen Services Unit at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo ($50.00). The Ministry of Justice's Translation Office is located at the Ministry of Justice Building, 13th floor, Lazoughly Square, Abdin, Cairo.

Please note: If you do obtain an English marriage certificate from the Egyptian Ministry of Justice Translation office, you DO NOT need to have it authenticated at the American Embassy to use for immigration in the United States.

If you have any questions, please send an email to the US Embassy at consularcairoacs@state.govor call us at (202) 2797-2301.

Americans wishing to apply for immigration visas for their spouses must take the following steps:

If you reside in the United States, please start the petition process by filing a Form I-130, "Petition for Alien Relative." The I-130 is available on the U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS) website at www.uscis.gov under "Immigration Forms." Please note: USCIS processes the Form I-130 as a visa number becomes available. Filing and approval of an I-130 is only the first step in helping a spouse immigrate to the United States. The fee is $355 and you may file online or send in the paper application to the appropriate U.S. address (listed on the website).

If you are a resident of Egypt, you may apply for an immigrant visa for your spouse at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo. You, the petitioner, must have maintained continuous residency in Egypt a minimum of the preceding six months in order to demonstrate residency to the Consular Officer. Please call 0900-70600 to make an appointment for an interview. Feel free to browse our website at http://egypt.usembas...consular/iv.htm for more information.

Middle East and North AfricaFor any new "Egypt" peeps
Yes Egypt has gotten very serious about the marriages. And when I got married in October they was asking very much how we met and how long we have know each other, and warned us that even if they approved our petition that at any step of our marriage process they can denie us. So yes it is very serious. But that is why for a while they changed the laws for a while and forced marriages through the marriage courts and it took up to 3 months to get married and it seem to work to cut down on the fraud. And just over a year ago they changed it back to getting married through the ministry of justice. And they do not have the fraud warning on there marriage requirements, I had checked Morocco's and they actually have warning on there page about internet meetings and marriage fraud. So I agree anyone that wants to get married in Egypt to make sure that you feel you know them, do not rush into it. Our men are charming, but really get to know them and ask them not so easy questions. And congratulations for being married for 5 years.

http://travel.state....s/cis_1108.html

Here's info on Egypt. Its seems like alot has been updated on that website since I went to Egypt last time.

Here's something posted on that website regarding marriages:

Marriage in Egypt: The Egyptian government allows U.S. citizens to marry in Egypt. For further information, please refer to the website of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo.

Many marriages between Egyptians and U.S. citizens are successful. However, the Embassy warns against marriage fraud on the part of the U.S. citizen or the Egyptian. Entering into a marriage contract for the principal purpose of facilitating immigration to the United States for an alien is against U.S. law and can result in serious penalties, including fines and imprisonment for the U.S. citizen and the Egyptian. At the same time, it is not uncommon for Egyptians to enter into marriages with U.S. citizens solely for immigration purposes. Relationships developed via correspondence, particularly those begun on the Internet, are particularly susceptible to manipulation. The U.S. government urges U.S. citizens who meet Egyptians on the Internet or while touring the country, to take the time necessary to get to know them before considering marriage. Unfortunately, the Embassy sees many cases of abuse against U.S. citizen spouses and often the marriages end in divorce when the Egyptian acquires a green card or citizenship in the United States. These cases invariably occur when the relationship is based mostly on Internet communication and very little face-to-face interaction.

It also takes about safety, laws, dual nationals, adoption, ect...

Just thought I'd pass it along for those who are newer to this.

Middle East and North AfricaFAMILY ACCEPTANCE
You was lucky the family knew about you the whole time. But the family does not even know about her at all. And that is a little weird to me too. Since most Egyptain men are proud of the women they choose, and everyone knows about them. But she is still a secret to his family as i have read in the post's. So this makes it a little different.

I talked to Tamer almost 3 years before I went to Egypt (for many reasons) but when I did, his family was great to me. Of course I had seen them online as well and they knew so much about me. I went and stayed for only 8 days then went back many months later and married him (10 days) and then took my kids (who talked to him everyday just like i did) for 2 weeks. His family is absolutely the most wonderful family I could ever hope for. Family acceptance to me is important. We have been married for almost 2 yrs and he knew when he met me that I couldnt have any more kids and he is totally fine with that. He is here and things are great but I can say every couple will have their moments. I wish you the best and just follow your heart. Go meet him and get to know his as much as you can and his family as well. I wish you the best and like ALY174 would love to talk to you. Please dont let some of these people here discourage you...you can only do what you want to do. Some times I think most of us want to protect others from being hurt or victims of fraud. But there are plenty of success stories to go along with the not-so-happy endings

Good luck and contact me any time.

Middle East and North AfricaFAMILY ACCEPTANCE
True, I think she has a lot to think about, it is a lot of reality. But we need to reach out to her too. This is a challenging situation she is in. And the more we stress it, the more she is going to prove us wrong. It is just natural defense. But I think we put out a lot for her to think about for now.

I didn't mean an Egyptian second wife would be involved. I meant she would possibly be divorced at some point and either a younger Egyptian wife would be taken or maybe even a younger American. He's just awful young. It's not really the age difference, it's his current age and the OP's current age. If he were in his mid/late 30s and she was in her late 40s/early 50s it wouldn't be such an issue.

Angel Eyes YuseefFemale02011-01-25 10:32:00
Middle East and North AfricaFAMILY ACCEPTANCE
I admit you have put it the best. We forget that even though they understand our way of life does not mean they lived life like us. They learn different cultures, where we do not unless we go out on our own and investagate it. And if the family did accept you on starter wife grounds, the family may incourage a egyptain second wife. But this is the culture and some things that can happen. Just be open to anything and continue to talk about these different things, you may see a different side of him.

It's none of anyone's business but yeah 22 is way young IMO. Chatting online for three years is really not a good way to judge maturity, intelligence, personality, etc. So many MENA guys get coached on what to say and copy/paste happens a lot. I know you don't want to hear any of this and will most likely go on ahead and marry this guy. Don't be surprised if the family isn't cool with the situation. And if they are, you may just be a starter wife and they're well aware and may even be encouraging it. I guess spending time in this forum and getting to know lots of ladies in similar circumstances has jaded me a bit. The rate of success with these types of marriages isn't great. Esp. when there's a large age difference and he's practically still a teenager. I'm sorry but I'm a couple years younger than you and the thought of being with a 22 year old (regardless of maturity) totally creeps me out. It's hard enough to find common ground with a 22 year old American. What are you going to do with a 22 year old Egyptian who lived a completely different life than you?

We tried walking-in to USCIS in Portland the other day to get A's biometrics done for EAD. They had him scheduled for the 19th, but we couldn't make it that day, so we decided to give it a shot. They allowed him to do it, with only a minimal amount of "We have appointments for a reason!" lecturing, but I thanked them up one side and down the other and in the end it didn't seem to add more than 1-2 minutes to their work day. Now we're just waiting for them to wrap it up, so A can start job hunting. unsure.gif

Nancy did he have just photo copies of everything that was sent in to the NVC or did he have extra original copies of the papers?
Also all he had to pay for was the dhl fee? I am trying to get my husband geared up for hopefully his interview!!!

He had a few originals, but the rest were copies along with all the proof he took with him of our relationship. The only thing he had to pay was 67 pounds for the DHL fee. Best of luck to your husband on his interview!!!

Middle East and North AfricaNancy's Interview!!
I am hoping that it is there and they just havent opened it or logged it in. I just dont like to get my hopes up with the Cairo embassy because they are full of surprises.

QUOTE (estadia @ Nov 9 2009, 07:10 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
well they said everything looked good and it was pending the documents from nvc ....to me this sounds like approval as long as there isnt any surprises in documents from there but there shouldnt be because he has copies of everything u sent to them....

i dont know why the embassy has not received ur file yet from nvc.....we had the same problem with perviz file turned out it was there but they had not logged it into the system yet.....

Inshallah you are right about two weeks. Them keeping the passport is a good sign right? I used to always think that if they kept your passport then you would have your visa soon, but from many cases I have seen on here it doesnt really mean much these days for them to keep the passport.

Middle East and North AfricaNancy's Interview!!
First off thanks for everyone's prayers and for those of you who partied with me at the slumber party yesterday. I really dont have much information to share, but I will share what I know so far. They let him in and made copies of his papers and then the secretary/receptionist told him that his papers had not arrived from NVC yet. I dont know how that is possible if NVC says it was sent on the 16th of Oct. Go figure!!! Well he told them that he had copies of everything and wanted to proceed with the interview anyway. They said okay and he did his interview and gave the CO copies of almost everything he had with him. Then they said that everything was fine, but everything is pending the arrival of the paperwork from NVC. The only positive thing is that they took his passport and he paid the DHL fees. Does anyone have any idea how much longer it could be until they receive the papers? Also is there some way for me to track the package since I guess the one I had originally thought to be ours wasnt?

YAY! It is always so nice to log into the NVC website and get the login fail. I remember how happy I was when I got the login fail message.
