CanadaCrossing the Border- No Ties
I visited Nick in Jersey just before my interview in Montreal last June (wow time flies!) and I brought a bunch of documentation, bank statements, all my USCIS stuff, interview stuff etc. and didn't have to show any of it.
If you are honest and straightforward you probably won't have to show proof.
Bring whatever you have though, even if it's little just in case but you should be fine.

Enjoy your visit!!!

CanadaQuestion about Canadian license :)
I'll just wait till my green card...if that ever comes.

Thanks for all the information guys.
I've missed you all greatly.

Hi Mephys... <3

CanadaQuestion about Canadian license :)
Hey!!
I hope that everyone is well, happy and doing fine!!!
Summer is almost here and I'm so excited!!!

So...
I am able to get my license here in Jersey (I'm still waiting for my green card...and apparently I don't need that to get my license here, I have enough documentation to get it here after all, just found this out!) So I'm going to go this Thursday and get my New Jersey drivers license (Scared like ####### to drive here but whatever blink.gif )

My question is about my Canadian license...
I only have my G2...I just got my license about 9 months or so before I moved here (I was a very late bloomer) and so I know that I need to get my G within 5 years of having my G2....or I'll be demoted back to G1 stage and have to start all over again.

What happens if Nick and I decide to move back to Canada? Can I just show them my New Jersey license and get a G Canadian one? Or will I have to start from scratch?
Can I go home and take the test for my G in the near future? I read somewhere that I can't because I don't have a Canadian address.

Help? smile.gif

Thanks guys!!!

QUOTE (g&a246 @ Apr 24 2009, 12:19 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Thanks guys. I think I'll just wait until after I move (May 5!) to call and change my address. Hopefully I'll get a different operator. She was saying I had to keep assets in Canada in order for my credit card to remain active, and I started to worry about the whole resident vs. non-resident thing when it comes to taxes. But I'll be keeping my bank account open which is considered an asset, right? And it appears that most of you have done so without a problem.

I was really surprised by her answer actually. I expected her to react more like Bell did this morning when I called to cancel my internet and cell service. They were practically begging me to keep my account open... ("We should keep this account active for when you return to Canada" "Are you sure you won't be coming back?" "Well if you do, I really hope you'll come back to Bell!" and on, and on...)

Yep, when I cancelled my cell phone it sounded like the woman was going to cry.
LOL

CanadaCanadian Credit Cards
Hey! smile.gif
So...
I have a TD Visa card and I used it here for like the first 8 months after I moved here.
I forgot to notify them that I was moving....
After 8 months they put a hold on my card because they noticed "Suspicious activity" I was charging at places in NJ when the address on the card is in Canada.
Shows you how closely they watch the activity...lol I was using it for 8 months!!

So I called them, they changed the address on it and have now started mailing me my statements here instead of to my parents house in Canada.

They didn't say anything about not being able to use the card in the States...it's a visa...
You pay the exchange rate but I'm still using it today...not so much now that I have a job and my own bank account here (TD in the States)
but it's good to have in emergencies.

Good luck on the move!

CanadaHow do I make an info pass appointment?
Guys...how do I make an info pass appointment?
Nick and I filed for my Green Card at the end of September and have heard nothing.
It says they are currently working on early November filers!
I went on the info pass website and the options to make an appointment aren't clear.
The most logical reason for an appointment would be:
"You need service on a case that has already been filed"

I click on that and the options to go further don't apply to me...

"Order from immigration court" - I was not directed to them about anything to do with courts.
"Case processing appointment" - I was not sent a notice to contact a local office.
"EAD Inquiry" - has nothing to do with my problem
"Case service follow up appointment" - I have not made an inquiry, blah blah blah 45 days, bring your inquiry number, etc...

so..how do I go about making an appointment???

I'm so frustrated sad.gif

I'm wondering what all of you expected things to be like.

I expected a wonderful life with my husband...not that he isn't wonderful, I love him sooo much and we are happy in our relationship completely it's just...we've had bumps in the road but hell who hasn't.

It just sucks here and is not what I thought it would be. Everything takes so much longer in Jersey. I can't do a damn thing. No SSN for almost 3 months now, stuck in this apartment...Nick out of a job now, can't seem to motivate him either most days....let alone motivate myself.

I miss home so bad it hurts.

At the same time, I know that going back home won't solve anything really either. I do have friends here, and Nick's family so I think part of me would miss it too...
I'm totally in between.

Today is a homesick day.
As many others, it comes and goes.
Nothing in particular set it off...I just want to see my parents house, pet my cats and go for a drive in my mom's car.
I miss home.

I'm sorry everyone here is having a hard time too. Life is funny and strange.....I'm extremely sad today.

Took me forever to find this thread, but I cant find Shreddies cereal in any grocery store here in Georgia. Is Shreddies cereal a Canadian thing? I'm really craving them badly. I'd ask my mom to ship me some down from Canada, but she's in a crabby mood cause she found out I was pregnant and I won't be "there with her" for everything. Anyone know where I can get me some? unsure.gif

Mary

Hey hon...
No, Shreddies are a Canadian product.
From Wikipedia:

Shreddies is a breakfast cereal sold in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada and New Zealand, produced by Post Cereals and General Mills, consisting of malted squares of inter-woven whole grain wheat.

Shreddies has been made in the UK since 1955. It was produced under the Nabisco name until the brand in Canada was purchased in 1993 by Post Cereals and then later in 1995 by Kraft General Foods.

Although not marketed in the United States, Kraft Foods has the trademark rights in the U.S

You may be able to find some at the international foods isle (unlikely though)
Sigh...
I have a whole list of stuff I'm taking down with me. laughing.gif

CanadaWhat's For Dinner?
I'm making Gnocchi with a Tomato Cream Sauce

TOMATO-CREAM SAUCE

3 c. canned Italian tomatoes (with liquid); drain, seed & dice tomatoes, reserving liquid, divided
2 tsp. olive or vegetable oil
1/2 c. chopped onion
1 garlic clove, minced
2 tsp. each minced fresh parsley & basil
1/4 tsp. salt
Dash pepper
3/4 c. half and half (blend of milk & cream)

In blender container process 2 cups tomatoes with the reserved liquid until pureed; set aside.

In 3 quart saucepan, heat oil over medium high heat; add onion and garlic and saute until softened, 1 to 2 minutes. Add pureed and diced tomatoes along with the parsley, basil, salt and pepper and stir to combine. Reduce heat to low and let simmer, stirring frequently, until mixture is reduced and slightly thickened, 25 to 30 minutes. Gradually stir in half and half and cook until thoroughly heated and flavors blend, 10 to 15 minutes longer (do not boil). Makes 4 servings. Fabulous with Swiss Chard Gnocchi or try this creamy sauce on cooked pasta or rice.

mmmm good.gif

CanadaOff Topic Part Deux
Strange fact of the day:

My upstairs obnoxious, super annoying neighbors sing their kid the happy birthday song every morning at like 7am.
We hear it...every morning.
What is up with that?

I mean...I get it if the kid loves the song but then on his actual birthday it wouldn't be as special.

Weird.

Great thread!
Our song is In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel.

It's a song I've loved for years...and it just fit so well.
It was the first song we ever danced to.....alone in his bedroom.
We danced to it on our wedding night.
It has such a special meaning to us.
Nick and I are celebrating our 1 year wedding anniversary in August and we are getting our wedding bands engraved with "It's in your eyes 8.2.08"

Congrats on the filing!

There are a few things you could start taking care of before the NOA2

First, if she doesn't have a long form birth certificate, she should order one of those...
Second if she is 26 or under, she could start the series of Gardisil shots that she will need for the medical, and also ensure she has all the other vaccines and get her proof together

There is a way to check your status. You go to this website: https://egov.uscis.g.../jsps/login.jsp - register for an account and search for your NOA1 receipt notice and it will tell you when your NOA2 is approved.

A K1 takes anywhere from 6-12 months depending on how fast you send back documents and depending how fast the consulate is.

You could receive an RFE anytime during your wait for the NOA2, so anytime now... but you would've probably got one by now so I wouldn't worry about that.

What she said happy.gif

While waiting, I just went over the Guides section here on VJ, made sure I had everything in order. Ordered what I had to get (long form birth certificate, etc) and just kept myself organized and busy.
Hopefully your wait isn't too long!

Best of luck and congrats on filing!!

Don't forget about moving!
If you plan on using a uhaul, depending on how far you need to go, it can be anywhere from $500 to a couple thousand.
Moving companies and pods are even more expensive.

I think we spent roughly $3500 bucks in total.

Congrats on your engagement!

A couple of things I would check out if I were you.

You should probably ask yourself and do some research to find out how you are going to be resident in Canada when you do retire.

If you take the higher security clearance job and do renounce your citizenship, obviously it won't be as easy as walking in to Immigration Canada and saying, ok, i'd like it back now, you will have to immigrate. Will you and your Husband have the things required to become permanent residents? If permanent residency is not an option for you at that time are you willing to retire in the U.S.?

Get a confirmation, regarding the other job, to find out if you will have to renounce your Canadian citizenship - that may make the decision much easier.

Personally I would never give up my Canadian citizenship for a job - but - it is a personal decision and I wish you luck!

I wholeheartedly agree with Trailmix. I would never, ever, ever give up my Canadian citizenship for a job.
This is your life, your dreams, your future. Follow your heart.

I wish you the best of luck!
