Use bloody Liptons for ice tea, ferchristsake! Don't waste those proper tea bags any more! :)

Exactly, she laughs at my fury when she wastes the good stuff. As much as I love the US, I do take the mickey by saying that they are destined to have bad tea for evermore because they wasted so much of the good stuff when they poured it all in to Boston Harbour!! Pennance for such a heineous act.

Ive told her she has a few weeks of freedom to misuse the good stuff, as once I arrive she's back on the Liptons

United KingdomjJust spotted on the baggage carousel at JFK...

I just asked my mother-in-law to bring me the biggest box of decaff tea she can find when she visits from the UK next week. I hope it doesn't suffer the same fate!

That is going to be the standing order for any visitors that want to come and stay, 'of course you can come and stay, it will cost you a big bag of tea bags or some bottles of HP Sauce'. :)

I've basically survived for 8+ years in the USA without having to resort to expensive import shops to feed my PG Tips habit using this method! Luckily they sell tea bags in large quantities in the UK. Not like here where tea comes in boxes of 20 tea bags, individually wrapped with an odd string attached and tasteless.

The rate that Leigh and her friends go through the good tea bags for ice tea, I'll prob have to get some visitors over every two months to keep a supply going. Realistically they will prob have to revert back to their local ice tea as I will be guarding them like the the proverbial pit bull. Heracy to make ice tea out of good english Tea!!!!

United KingdomAny UK folks NOT applying for US citizenship?
My opinion is very much along the lines of 'I know I'm an Englishman, my family know I'm an Englishman and as soon as I say something to anyone, they too know I'm an Englishman'. The fact I may have decided (in the future) to have taken US citizenship will not change my identity, I will remain who I am.

The main reason for taking citizenship for me will be the security. I have read stories, albeit in the media, about people being refused renewals on their green card because of supposed complaints for threatening behaviour etc. If my chance of staying with my loved one was to be jeapordised by a grudge or hearsay, I would want to remove the risk as quickly as possible, if that means taking citizenship at the earliest opportunity then so be it. As I said I will still be the same guy with the same character and those that know me will not see me as any different.

I think the post from earlier about it being a very personal decision was spot on, we each will have our very own reasons one way or the other. I fully agree with Dr Lha that employment is a big determining factor if your proffessional skills fall in to the security cleared area. It is a shame that there is very little flexibility in this area for the US to take advantage of the talent on their own doorstep that they are deneying themselves but for want of a citizen only security clearance.

United KingdomProper Back Bacon

Bacon has been raised on a couple of threads recently and it is one of THE things that most brits and US partners do miss from good old blighty. I have looked high and low (less the UK shops that I have yet to find in Tampa) for a similar cut in the US and haven't been able to find it. I even attempted to explain it to a butcher in the vain hope that he would cut some off a pig he had hanging in his shop, but to no avail. Is there another name for this type of cut or do I have to start thinly slicing the ham steaks to get anywhere near. As I said in another thread the thought of giving up those smoked back bacon and egg sandwiches lathered in HP brown sauce and washed down with a strong cup of English Tea (hot with milk) is too much to consider. :crying: :crying:

It's been a long time since I've had it, but isn't Canadian bacon kind of close?

EDIT - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bacon

Thanks for the steer, I will ask Leigh to go directly to the butchers and ask for some Canadian Bacon to see if that works. Fingers Crossed, life will be complete with the Florida sun, the love of my life and good bacon

Thanks to all on VJ and in particular the UK thread, for all the advice and support that is handed out and also for your best wishes for today.

Potential applicants should be advised to browse these pages by the immigration paperwork as I think without this site there would be a whole lot more RFE demands and refusals etc.

I still can't believe it has actually been granted, I have to keep pinching myself to take it in :)

Phoned Leigh as soon as I got out, one of the best wake up calls she has ever had.

Got in to the big room at about 1040 and was back out on the street by 1155 really quick. I had the Chinese lady at the first desk and she was very polite, actually making a few jokes about places I had been. The interview was with a young woman who was very business like and asked me a few question from the 'questions to ask interviewees book' She was obviously happy as she said, 'we are going to grant you your visa, it will be delivered to you by the courier within 3 - 5 days'.

The people walking in must have thought I was some sort of goon as I was walking around with this huge big ### grin on my face.

4 more weeks and in to the arms of my babe.

United KingdomWorst Mistake Ever...

To anyone who knows about this sort of thing (LONDON EMBASSY especially!) - do you need to include the passport along with the opened not-to-be-opened envelope when you send it back to the Embassy?

Thanks!

TD,

No he didn't... did he? :)

Oh he did. I know, I couldn't believe it either. We specifically had a conversation about it. Poor thing. But it can be fixed, so not point in fretting over it now.

I smacked my head loud enough for it to be heard IN England, though, I'm pretty sure.

TD excuse me if I missed it in another thread, but I take it from Tim's little fau par, that the 'additional checks' have been completed and you have your approved?

United KingdomExporting our dog to america
When you arrive at the airport with your pet (dog in my case), they will take the carrier minus pet and put it through security checks. They will then apply all of the various labels etc to the exterior of the kennel/ carrier. Once everything is done they let you put the pet in to the kennel/ carrier and they seal it for you. The pet is then taken to the pet holding area without you and you then continue through the normal passenger route. I found that the ground crew were very thorough and reassuring which is well needed. The kennel/ carrier is issued with its own boarding sticker, which is transfered to the flight crew and then given to you when the pet is loaded on to the aircraft. I was told that they save the loading of pets until the very last minute to minimise the stress that they go through. Once at the other end, you must go to oversize luggage arrivals in the baggage reclaim area. Unfortunately they might not let you get the pet out of its kennel/ carrier until you have cleared imigration etc. Once you get to the other side you pet will appear somewhat traumatised, but they do settle back down again once you reassure them and get them out of their kennel/ carrier. My dog was back to being her usual self within minutes.

From the vets perspective, I visited the vet the day before we travelled for the fit to travel certificate. You need to check that they have the up to date animal export paperwork as issued by the appropriate government department, do this well in advance of your appointment to give them time to get it if they haven't. Also check the requirements for thestate in which you are ultimately travelling to. The vet themselves just needs to certify the health of the animal and confirm that the mandatory vaccinations have been administered or are up to date. Remember that the rabies shot will need to be given at least 30 days prior to travel. Also ensure that the vet writes the micro chip number of your pet on the letter.

I also got one of the low cost kennels, as long as it fullfills the requirements of the AITA and the airline, there is no need to spend a fortune. Bottom line here is treat the move of your pet very much like you did your visa application. Do the research, spend some time weighing up the options and then come up with a plan that fits in with your own schedule. Please believe me when I say that it is less hassle than it first appears and once you get to the other side, you will wonder why you worried so much about it.

Good luck to all and dont worry about the process.

United KingdomExporting our dog to america
DO NOT USE THE PET CARRIERS!! If you fly with Delta or NWest you can take your dog as accompanied baggage for $100. You still need the formal vet certificate, vaccinations and an approved transport kennel but trust me it is no hassle at all. I received loads of quotes for my lab and I fail to see how the carriers can justify 1200 pounds for something that I managed all in for approx 250 inc the extras. The websites for those two airlines have good information on travelling with your pet, you do however need to book your flight direct with the airline.

Do not worry too much about getting your dog in to the USA, it is far easier for them than us suspicious humans I can assure you.

Dont worry about the non standard vaccinations until you get over here. Heartworm testing is needed when you get here as it is a nasty mosquito carried problem.

Bess is now enjoying her retirement here in Florida and is a million times better off for being here too.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do. good.gif

Cheers for that. USPS is way cheaper at $60

There is a company called 'Goin Postal' that ships using all of the major carriers. They can weigh your parcel and give you the best price / discount. Normally they will ship at prices lower than the FEDEX/ UPS prices. There are only about 200 of them around the country so its worth seeing if there is one in your area.

I was asking in response to the post where the man was stopped and since he had no id he just told the police where he lived. So if someone jumps bail and is later stopped for another reason, couldn't they just use a false name since an ID is not mandatory?

Yes they could and they do, innevitably they get caught and another crime is listed to their charge sheet. If the police have any doubt as to a persons true identity they detain them. When they check an individual they will also check that the address is genuine through the control room. It happens but not many get away with it too many times. If you dont have your driving licence on you when stopped in the car, you are given a 'producer' which means you have about 5 days to appear at a police station with all your vehicle and licence documents, if not you go to court and get points and a fine.

Quick update on the above - just sent an email to the London embassy, about an hour later they replied with the following:

"The Embassy has received all your required forms, and you have been listed as eligible for a visa interview. You should expect to receive written notice of the time and date of your visa interview within the next few weeks."

That must be a record for the quickest response ever...... expect the packet 4 any day or hour now...............

Thanks for the input Tracy and Daisy. I'll keep searching around. 20 days till I go over, hurray. Better get my bootie in gear!!!!

JenandBarney, I would take your dad up on the offer of using his miles. I was lucky enough to have some miles too and as an example a one way BA flight from London to Tampa would have been approx $1600! With the miles that amount came down to $190, so it makes sense even though we do not like to rely on our folks too much.

Good luck in the search.

Thanks for adding me to the list ..... i really we all get the interview dates soon ,,,, we have our wedding planned for 22 sept ...just hoping things dont become tight :)

I hope you get an early interview too, however being a realist there is every chance that it is going to go to the wire. If you look at the dates in the list, August has a good cross spread of dates and when the forms were sent in etc. I would say that you will receive a date in Sept, but exactly when is the lottery. Hope concrete are your wedding plans and flight etc?

touch wood the interview will fall early in the month giving you plenty time etc. Good Luck

Ladies and gentlemen, your new and improved (?) interview thread! I've incorporated TracyTN's idea for graduates, imported info from Tiffany's spreadsheet, added some names and dates, and fixed a couple of errors. The "Waiting for Interview" people are now in chronological order from date of sending back their P3 and checklist (DS2001). I guess since it's Saturday there won't be much news but who knows -- a Packet 3 or 4 may thump onto someone's dorstep this morning! :)

Elmcitymaven you do a wonderful job of updating this thread is it theraputic in dealing with the frustrations etc of the process or does it add to it all seeing all these couples whizz along the visa section sausage machine? Oh by the way, you have re-inserted Wayne and Leigh in to the waiting for interview again, which is a duplicate for my login, not that I mind.

The coke / pepsi is also extra sweet to the point where it is horrible. Diet varients taste really artificial and not pleasant so it was good to see something like Coke Zero come out, I got Leigh on to it recently and for a non soda drinker she was impressed. Brits that think the same of the coke /pepsi if you havent tried it, I would recommend it as the nearest thing to UK flavoured soda.

You'll probably want to verify with an immigration attorney, or the embassy in Londonitself, selly, BUT I would think a notarized letter from the buys' mother granting permission would be sufficient. Good luck!

United KingdomParental Responsibility Info
Having read through this post as it touches on my own dilema, I now have a question......

I was married to my sons mother and for the last three years since the divorce the boys have resided with their mother. Notwithstanding their residence, there was no award of custody at the divorce, however it does say 'but the children reside with their mother'. My sons are now at an age where they have decided they would rather live with my US citizen wife and I, which as you can imagine I am over the moon about. Do I need to get an amendment to the court order saying that they now wish to live with me in the USA, or is a notarized letter from their mother sufficient to satisfy USCIS? I have a little time before we file as I have asked them to spend a couple of months giving the matter serious thought before we proceed. Incidentally, the boys are 11 and 14 so no longer small children.

United KingdomParental Responsibility Info

I have a residency order, which is basically custody. He does have parental responsibility. We split up in 1994 when my daughter was 2. I moved to the Isle of man 6 years ago, the year I moved here, i paid for my daughter to go and spend christmas with him. Since that visit, he moved/changed his phone number and hasnt spoken to, or seen my daughter since. She was 9 then and is almost 15 now.

Was only the end of last year that I happened to get his phone number.

He has never paid any child support since we split, we were never married either.

I just have a really bad feeling about it all.

Dawn.

Considering that he doesn't pay child support AND hasn't seen your daughter for 6 years I think you MAY be able to get around this. You have a residency order already, which gives you custody. If you could go back to a solicitors and get them to write a letter outlining the fact that your child's father refuses contact, doesn't pay a penny towards upkeep AND hasn't seen her for 6 years, also adding in info about the custody arrangements, that could be enough.

However, if I was you, I'd contact the embassy with ALL of this information and see what they say. They are the only ones who can tell you what you need, none of us here can really give you a proper answer and this is the only way you will know anything for definite. We can all guess and tell you what they have told us for OUR particular circumstances but, as we all know, every case is a little different.

I can't see how you can be expected to get a letter of consent from him when you don't even know where he is AND he told you to get stuffed over the phone. Contact the Embassy again, see what they say.

You might find that if you go to your solicitor and explain that the father doesn't contribute at all to the upbringing of the child, there are grounds to issue a new court order giving you sole responsibility for the child. I haven't lloked in to this too much but would that not be sufficient to satisfy the visa requirements? I really hope this is resolved quickly for you as it does seem totally unfair that it is jeapordising the family hapiness.

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionLondon Embassy - Process Tmes - Need help

Our police certificate only took 10 days to arrive, but I believe the norm is more like 40 days. If you've not applied for it yet, I'd get on that ASAP. You'll need it before you send back the checklist - and I believe they wait for that before finding you an interview date.

We are just waiting for the NVC to process and send out their bits to the embassy in London. I have also worried about the police certificate, not because I have a record, but because I have lived all over the place. Will a certificate from the Police National Computer suffice? I have made a concious decision to start filling in the downloadable forms now to cut down on the waiting time. NOA2 took long enough and we just want to get the whole thing finished so we can be together.

As long as you've only lived 'all over the place' in the UK I wouldn't worry about it.

TracyTN is right about the police certificate; my husband's took about as long as TracyTN's fellow's did but some people here have reported waiting over a month for them. Send off for it ASAFP!

Unfortunately 'all over the place' does include some foreign countries, but I'm not worried about that as my service record covers those locations. It's going to be a bind remembering all of my addresses though lol. Thanks for the reassurance.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsJanuary Filers
New to this post, but we filed our K1 application in mid Jan, received confirmation about the 15th, NOA1 was Apr 06th, NOA 2 about the 27th and my packet 3 arrived from the embassy on Friday. Feeling somewhat foolish as we followed the USCIS timelines and thought we had plenty of time to get police certs etc together, so we are now slightly unprepared documentation wise. Mind it will prob take over a month to get the interview by which time all docs should be in.............. hopefully.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresLondon

I don't think i can stay in the US and get married legally. I will check with a lawyer. This time frame for a K1 visa seems outrageous! Does it really take 6 months to get the visa? I can handle waiting for a greencard/work permit. I just don't think I could wait 6 months to be with my girl again. Can anyone say how long they waited for their k1? I've seen only a couple of London timelines.

Six months is also very quick! Most are averaging 7-8 months so the advice to speak to an immigration lawyer will be even more attractive I think. Believe you me having to wait this long is hard on both parties so if you can find a way to stay in the US, get married and adjust without coming back......... do it.

Good luck and every happiness to you both.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresLetter of Intent
No disrespect here but if you post a question in the "K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Procedures General Discussion", you should expect the advice to be of a K1 nature. Perhaps a little more browsing of which forum to post in would have answered the question for you.

Might I suggest this post is moved to the appropriate area now that it has been identified as a non K1 question?
