Canadabank account in US
I've had Bank of America chequing & savings accounts and a Bank of America Visa card for a couple of years now. (Hadn't and still haven't moved to the US yet, and I was a student when I applied.) I went across the border to Blaine, WA from Vancouver, asked to open an account, and they did it without any problems. They looked at my Royal Bank Visa card and offered something similar, though they said they can't give me a "Platinum" card until I get a SSN.

When I need more $$ in my BoA account, I go to BoA, write myself a $CAN cheque from my Royal Bank account, and that's it. Very straightforward & easy.

CanadaNext Step

You will need a police certificate for each province that you have lived in for more than 6 months since the age of 16. Each certificate is only province wide... NOT CANADA WIDE. You should do this now as it can take 4-8 weeks for it to be processed.

I'm curious where you got that information from. I got a Canada-wide name-check done by the RCMP in Jasper, AB (for free, within about two minutes) while I was working there this summer.

I read about someone doing that on here. I think she wanted to cross the border to take care of some wedding plans. Others might remember the details... I'm afraid her thread might be on the old site?

CanadaFees/Taxes to anticipate as result of moving from Canada?

You can keep your RRSP's.. but if you took out a loan against it for the various reasons that you can (home or school), you have to either pay it back or clain the amount outstnading as imcome in the year that you leave Canada. In addition, you must report your RRSP income to the IRS each year.

Thanks for that very valuable info. It didn't cross my mind that I'd have to do anything about the RRSPs I cashed out to go back to school.

CanadaCashing a CDN Check
I deposit Canadian Royal Bank cheques to my (WA state) Bank of America account in Tennessee all the time, and don't pay any fees. The exchange rate's comparable to what you'd get at the Royal Bank. Just make sure to remind them it's in Canadian funds.

Canadatravel between US and Canada
I know everyone says you need to bring proof of ties to Canada, and I do carry them, but I just came to the US for a week-long visit on Saturday and the officer didn't ask to see anything. I did show her the I-130 NOAs 1 & 2 and the K-3 NOA 1 though, and told her I was only visiting for a week because I have to back at work next Monday.

Zyggy says: this:

As a new immigrant you have up to ten years to bring your personal effects over without duty. It's not like Canada where you have to give them a list that includes everything but the kitchen sink when you activate the visa, and anything not on that list is dutiable.... you can make a declaration of your accompanying goods each time that you enter the US.

If they ask you if you have anything, you can freely tell them not at this time and they will accompany you at a later daye while you settle your affiars in Canada.

CanadaStill no K3 interview
I called the NVC this morning to see if we'd get an interview in September (I know, it seems premature, but that's what the woman I talked to last week told me to do), and the woman I spoke to today was almost rude too. (Very uncharacteristic of the NVC, in my experience.) First, she scolded me for being in the US, then after the speech about them assigning dates the second week of the month and telling me all the dates for August were already taken, she told me not to call and ask about interview dates in the future, just wait for the letter in the mail. When I told her I was just doing what the woman had told me to do last week, she said they were behind with scheduling this month. So it sounds like it's nothing personal.

I hope you get your interview very soon!! (F)

That's a great idea. You could drive across the border with the stuff, then ship it. I've read about some Canadian sellers doing that on EBay.

CanadaBest way to move stuff long distance?
One thing that might be worth checking out is USPS's media mail.

Media Mail
Media Mail® service is a cost efficient way to mail books, sound recordings, recorded video tapes, printed music, and recorded computer-readable media (such as CDs, DVDs, and diskettes). Media Mail can not contain advertising except for incidental announcements of books. The maximum weight for Media Mail is 70 lbs.

I shipped about 10 boxes of books and papers from Blaine, WA, and they cost about $12 each. Boxes of CDs were much cheaper.

CanadaI-864 need to be notarized?
From the US Dept of State:

Completing the I-864

Is the I-864 and I-864A required to be notarized?

No. The sponsor just has to sign the I-864. You should know however, when the sponsor signs the Form I-864 he/she certifies that the information provided, transcript and/or photocopy of tax documentation is true and correct, under penalty of perjury.

Thanks, tommysgirl, and congrats on your interview! I hope they'll let you exchange it for the CR1. It's only fair after how long you've waited.

We've decided not to continue with the K3, since I need to be in Alberta until the 2nd week of October for work anyway. Hopefully they'll let me back in the US for one last visit for our third annual Canadian Thanksgiving party. :star:

CanadaOF-167

hmmm, weird.
i emailed vancouver asking them about the OF-167 and I-134 and they said that i didn't need these forms.
i am confused.
do K-3 visa applicants even need these at the interview?

I'd say no. I emailed Vancouver asking the same question, and they said those forms aren't needed for the K3. They aren't included on the K3 checklist, either.

Good luck at your interview!

I hope he makes it on time. If it was me, I'd definitely take a taxi. It'll take at least 20 minutes to get from downtown to the airport under the best of circumstances, and lately there have been long line-ups getting through security at YVR. It'll probably be worse this week with the new regulations coming into effect yesterday.

From WestJet's site:

Due to possible delays at security screening, guests are advised to check in a minimum of two hours prior to departure.

GOOD LUCK at the interview!!

Canadaevidence of relationship - what to bring to interview

You don't want to waste paper and ink?! Get a grip! This is your future together and worth printing a few items, just in case. While they may not be necessary, you can never predict. So it's better to be overly prepared.

I wouldn't bother if it was me. I didn't have all of the *required* documents (didn't have my husband's former marriage certificate, didn't have a certified copy of his divorce document), and they didn't care. When I told the woman who made sure everything's in order that I'd screwed up, she said those documents aren't such a big deal. The interviewer didn't mention them at all. (Can't say enough about how terrific the Vancouver consular staff are!)

I *did* meet a guy who'd had his interview a couple of days before and needed a co-sponsor. He said they told him to come back with the documents ASAP, and they'd issue the visa. They were very friendly toward him, and issued it a few minutes after he handed them the papers.

So... Maybe bring a sample of phone records / correspondence, and a disk with the rest in the off-chance that you need them? :)

CanadaAppt. @ U.S. Consulate in Vancouver
I was there for 2 1/2 hours last week but I was last in line, and they forgot about me after my interview. (Got sent to window 2 to await instructions for picking up the visa... and waited... and waited.) The lady was mortified when she realized I was there and ran off to get the visa so I wouldn't have to come back.

To echo what others have said: Vancouver's great! :luv: Everyone was very friendly, from the guards, to the lady who puts the documents in order, to the consular officer who does the interviews.

Good luck!

CanadaSomething I just thought about

I am flying with WestJet and will go through customs at Las Vegas, not Winnipeg. Although, it is making me now think that maybe I should have booked a flight through a different airline so that just in case I run into problems at customs for whatever reason, I'd still be on my home turf...

How does that work? From my experience in other Canadian airports with preclearance centres, the place you leave from is your POE.
