CanadaPacket 3: divorce decree *and* marriage certificate?
I didn't read the K3 list carefully and only brought my husband's divorce papers to the interview in Vancouver, not the marriage certificate. They didn't care. If I'd been more careful I would've brought it.

We got a great flight / hotel deal on Travelocity at the Marriott Montreal Chateau Champlain. It's a lovely place (all non-smoking), with a subway stop down below, and it's only a 10 minute walk to the consulate. I'd highly recommend it!

CanadaCanadian bank accounts & credit cards

I had the same question for myself. But my issue is about my student loan. I didnt see anywhere that if I move to the US that the interests rate is going to increase, but I read it here from someone else and thaty person had to pay an insane amount of money.

Right now both my bank and credit card have my mom's adress so I think I will leave it like that until I get a job, then I will pay the balance off on my student loan and change the adress.

I'm scared to ask them cause then I would surely be flagged!

Mephys

The interest rates on my student loans (Royal Bank, BC Govt., and Canadian Govt.) have remained the same. I updated my address with all three. I think the main thing is that you can't get Interest Relief if you don't reside in the US.

Canadarandom question about weddings in Canada

Ppl who do leave for honeymoon immediately after the reception would entrust a family member to pack up the gifts and deliver them to thier new residence the next day so they are waiting for them post honeymoon for the opening and thank you cards to be written, of course thegiftcards go with the bride and groom.

I don't imagine any of our (Canadian) families would want the job of delivering our gifts to our new residences the day after the wedding.

With all of the traveling back & forth & time off work, we couldn't afford a honeymoon until almost a year later (in Montreal).

Canadarandom question about weddings in Canada
I've been to lots & lots of weddings in BC and gifts have never been opened at the reception; like someone here said, there's too much partying! I think gift-opening parties the day after the wedding are typical, but my husband and I opened our gifts with my parents a few days later. (Well, the day after our wedding was New Year's Eve, so we still had some partying to do!)

CanadaThe work thing...

You CANNOT get an EA stamp for any US based airport (JKF or Dulles) because we clear customs here in Canada before even boarding - not in the US.

If you really wanted to you could circumvent it by flying to a non-US destination first.

You may qualify to participate in NEXUS if you are a citizen or permanent resident of Canada or the U.S. and have lived in one of these countries continuously for the last three years.

So does this mean new residents don't qualify because we haven't lived in the US continuously for three years?

CanadaCanada funds check in the US

We ended up taking the check to Chase (where our wedding account is) and having them cash it. We told them it was in Canadian funds, so he did the exchange and deposited the USD amount into my account. Then, two days later, I see on my online statement that they are crediting my account for the difference between the USD amount in the CAD amount. I guess they assumed the CHECK FROM THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT was in US dollars (smart). I knew they'd figure it out eventually, and two days ago they rewithdrew the difference taking it back down to the amount we originally deposited it before.

Phew, I'm never dealing with that again. We're definitely sending all CAD checks to Craig's parents from now on. Thanks for the advice guys!

:star: Cass (bebop the great)

That happens to me all of the time... You just need to make sure they stamp the front of the cheque with their currency conversion stamp, where they fill in the amount in CAN$, the conversion rate, and the resulting amount in US$.

I always go to the same branch because all of the tellers know how to deal with Canadian cheques now. --They have to put a stamp on the front stating the rate of exchange and the amount in $US. There's only one stamp at my branch so it takes a while to find it; last week they ordered one for me to keep in my purse.

CanadaCanada funds check in the US

PS - Wherever you get it done, expect to pay a small exchange fee. Bleh.

I cash Canadian cheques all the time at Bank of America, and have never paid a fee. (Their "fee" is the exchange rate!)

(I get paid in Canadian, which is usually deposited to my Royal Bank account, then I write myself a cheque here every time I need some money.)

Try Bank of America!

CanadaCanadian Credit for the US petitioner

Has anyone done this or have any ideas how to do it? I don't need CDN credit to be super anytime soon, so this would be a multi-year strategy.

Will you start building credit if she adds you to her Canadian Visa card? I added my husband to my Royal Bank Visa card a couple of years ago. They sent him a form in the mail to sign and return. We use it when we're on holidays, and I use it a lot when I'm working in Canada.

CanadaCulture shock for Canadians in the US

I only weigh 93 pounds and feel when I am there like I need to keep moving because I could be mistaken for a snack or a rack of ribs..lol....

hmm... gigantic portions at restaurants and side salads covered with cheese and bacon bits, mass consumption of pop, people using drive-throughs for everything because they're too lazy to get out of their cars, sugar in almost *everything* (bread!!?), aisles & aisles of frozen meals and ####### like "chicken crackers". At my five-year-old stepson's elementary school they serve breakfast (e.g., donuts with biscuits and cereal) that doesn't include any fruit! Sometimes I ask myself if the medical insurance & drug companies control the food industry, so they're guaranteed a huge population of people requiring shots for diabetes, pills for high cholesterol, and a steady supply of hip & knee replacements. A Q&A medical column in our local "Parent" magazine asked "Are fad diets ok for kids aged 7-12?" :o [/end rant]

In same skillet, combine reserved bacon drippings, the dressing and sugar and heat to boiling. Pour over salad, top with green onion and black pepper and toss gently."

You forgot cheese. There's cheese on everything here, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If you don't want cheese on your bacon and egg sandwich, they don't know how to ring it up because the cash register is only programmed for cheese.

Then there are medical conditions. Everyone here can tell you their cholestrol count, blood pressure, and a host of other things, including the prescription drugs they take. Guess they never realized that if they cut out the cheese, they could stop paying for Lipitor!

Except it isn't real cheese. It's "American cheese" aka processed "cheese food". I REALLY miss the great unpasturized cheeses available in Vancouver, which are illegal here. :(

CanadaIf I may ask...

I did mine myself:

-Put the digital camera on a chair on a table, stood in front of a white wall, hit the timer;
-Cropped & sized them in Photoshop; and
-Printed them onto Canon photo paper using a colour printer.

No problems, almost free.

Oh wow, you're the first person I've heard of who has ever done a passable passport pic by themself lol. Really though, that takes skill. They are so picky about the requirements with the photos that I didn't think it was even feasible for someone to do the picture themselves at home.
I am pretty much camera handy-capped, so in my case I think I will play it safe and head to LD or Walmart hehe.

It was easy. I just looked at the camera, took the photo, downloaded the photo to my computer, then adjusted the scale in Photoshop until my head was the right size. (Had to print off a couple of copies in B&W on plain paper & measure with a ruler & adjust until the size was perfect.) Then I cut the pictures to the required size using the big cutting thingy at Kinkos. Don't bother if you aren't comfortable with it. I'm just cheap when I know I can do it myself. And I got a nice photo of myself for once, instead of a super-goofy-looking one, like the ones on my driver's license, passport, etc. ;)

Hi,

Can anyone tell me what to expect in packet 3 from the Vancouver Consulate? So far I've gathered it'll include:

-checklist
-DS-230, part 1
-DS-156
-DS-156K...

I'm currently visiting my husband in the US but when I return to Canada this weekend I'll go straight into the field for work for another 3 weeks before I can get home to check my mail. I'd like to have everything ready, if possible.

Thanks! :)

Sounds like me... Vancouver --> Nashville. It's SO hot & humid! :o But I'm lucky to be working in Jasper, AB & northern BC this spring-summer.

To answer the original Q, I moved to the US because my husband's 5-year old son stays with us half-time and we wouldn't consider leaving him. :luv: We're planning to move to Vancouver when he grows up. Not much chance of me doing well in the South career-wise, so I'm commuting. :hehe:

They need immunization records as well; and they can provide the antibody titration test for those of us who do not have our records.

Not sure how long it will take to get the results of the titres from that office, but it's something to consider if your interview is scheduled soon after the medical exam. My family Dr did mine and it took about a week to get the results back from the lab. Another thing to consider is whether they'll do them for free or if it's an extra cost.

CanadaI feel completely hopeless

At this point, I figure it probably would be best for me to come up there and get married. But that is AFTER I get authorization to do so due to my previous divorce. Takes an expensive letter from an attorney then it has to be sent in to a certain office in Thunder Bay. That supposedly takes weeks to do. sigh. THEN we can get married.

Is that an Ontario-specific requirement? My husband and I didn't have to do that in BC. (He's divorced.)
