CanadaMurphy's Immigration Laws
I got stopped and had my carry-on luggage searched right before boarding the plane (in the boarding walkway). The woman kept insisting that my two microscopes -one dissecting scope, one compound scope- were "sculptures". #######? Sculptures of what? She made me so angry.

It wasn't required in Vancouver in October. I haven't read about any changes since then.

Also for K3s, we need to submit I-134 and OF-167 for Vancouver, yes?

I didn't take anything to the K-3 interview (Vancouver) or CR-1 interview (Montreal) because they didn't ask for it in the instructions. And they didn't ask for anything at either of the interviews.

They'll take your sealed envelope and open it, stamp your passport, and staple the I-94 into it. I think you might have to get another finger print... I've forgotten already.

CanadaBankruptcy Question

Will there be any visa or tax issues for you living in the US and working in Canada?

Sly

Not that I expect, because I'll be spending more time in the US than in Canada. I've been doing consulting work in BC / Alberta for a couple of years, and am in the process of setting things up in the US so my consultancy will be US-based, but with Canadian clients.

CanadaBankruptcy Question

The good news is that you may have a better chance of finding a high paying job in the U.S., given the size of the economy and population base. There's also less unemployment.

That depends on the area you live in too. We live in an area close to Atlanta, but Joel has NOT found a job yet. He has a degree in IT, loads of experience, but so far that's done him no good at all.

I totally agree! There may be good opportunities for a particular profession somewhere in the US, but some of us are living where we are because of family responsibilities, and there aren't any good jobs nearby. The job situation is really grim in the environmental sciences in the South. It's like the area's 20 years behind the west. I could get a job teaching at one of the universities or working for the government but why bother at this point when I can work part time in BC and Alberta and make over twice as much money.

CanadaBankruptcy Question

However, if you still have debts in Canada, it might be a good idea to have a plan to discharge them before moving to the States.

Just curious, Why? I still have student loans, and don't know why I would've needed to pay them off before moving...

CanadaDebt
zyggy: She said she's the USC. Her mom's probably a USC too.

Nope I'm in the US he is in Canada my mom is in the US. We have thought about stopping the process but then we are at the point of no return. We just didn't think my husband would have to quit his job and we would have had no problems paying on and even off our bills but everything went to hell in a handbag. We thought of debt help places, bankrupty, and have even made some calls to try to settle with creditors without luck there. We have nothing at all. We live with family and use their tv, cable, internet etc. I guess you learn from your huge mistakes and we will be digging out of this one for years to come not matter what happens.

Your mom is in the US? Is she a CItizen... Was she born in the US... How long did she live in the US...

Depending on your answers, you may be a US CItizen and not have to go through Immigration..

I (USC) lived in Canada for the last few years we filed DCF and I came back to the US to get a job and what not for domicle. .... My husband had to get a new job because his job required him to cross the border daily and when we talked to the POE they told us they would refuse him entry and ban him if he kept that up during the process so he quit and took another job with a cut in pay over half.

I second the recommendation for a celebratory dinner at Seasons in the Park. They have good food & drinks and the view's terrific. I also like Delilah's, in the West End. And make sure you check out the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia. It's world-class.

Good luck!

CanadaHello from new member Ant
 What's your problem? There's nothing WRONG with deciding to get married while visiting a girlfriend / boyfriend / fiancee / fiance in the US. If there was, it wouldn't be legal, *which it is*.

Just because you've chosen to do things the way you did is no reason to be rude to someone who's new here.

sorry about this comment, but would be obvious to me on a visitor's visa that one's intention were not only to "visit" he if got married after 2 weeks on a B2.....

Oh well some people get away with it, i guess...

Wasnt the best time for me to read that.

Not necessarily?

No. The main thing is, if you're on interest relief, where the government is temporarily paying your interest because you can't afford to, you have to be living in Canada.

I'm glad we went back for the CR-1 interview in Montreal. You can always find good deals on travelocity or orbitz or whatever, and then make it into a romantic vacation to reward yourselves for all of the stress you've endured. It's a great city!

I would definately prefer to go on K3 and AOS. Once I get back to the US, the rest can take as long as it needs to. We will be fine with that. He was so determined he was right- he made me mad. He kinda treated me like some dumb blonde. I have been working hard to understand this process and have come a long way since I started.

Sounds like the jack-### I talked to in Edmonton. :o

CanadaVancouver Waiting Room...

Hi folks,

Now I've been reading some of your are going through Vancouver instead of Montreal, and being that we are in Edmonton, way closer to VAN than to MTL, I have some questions; that may actually help a lot of us in the West part of Canada.

1. Who can have their files transferred to Vancouver? (we are going IV route, no k-3)
2. How to do it?
3. For those already with the Vancouver experience, how was it for you?

etc., etc., etc.

Thanks a bunch!!! (also posted in Regional/Canada)

L&B.

You can't get the IR-1 / CR-1 through Vancouver. Immigrant visas are only issued by Montreal.

CanadaVancouver Waiting Room...

I keep stressing to him he needs to send me the original certified copies of the divorce papers, but he keeps saying things to me that make me think he doesn't quite get it.

Not that I'm advocating this, but I didn't take a certified copy of my husband's divorce (no raised seal) to my K3 interview (though I brought a photocopy) and I didn't read the checklist carefully and didn't take a copy of his previous marriage certificate. I was pretty sure they wouldn't issue my visa because of it, but the nice lady at the counter who reviews the documents said it wasn't a big deal.
