CanadaHappy Canada Day!!!
Hey all.
Just wanted to say, Spailenes, her husband and I had a BLAST at the Canada Day celebration in Washington D.C. we had burgers, beer and saw some music and rubbed elbows with some fellow Canadians. We then went to a pub and had a pretty mediocre poutine but we had boatloads of fun.

We also got interviewed by CTV News!!! My sister who lives in Prince George, B.C. saw it and sent me a hilarious Facebook message. She also PVRed it.

I don't think I want to see it. I think I rambled about how awesome Canada is and how we're nto American's hat!
:} Stupid beer.

Canadaquick question
Thanks guys! I know right, flames... another illigal Canadian! But i just figure with all the reasons to bypass someone, this would be a biggie. So in my C.V. I put a small addendum on the bottom saying that i am able to work in the US, no sponsorship required. Same with my cover letters. Then this way they're not, "oh damn, no idea what to do with this one, buh bye....
:)
Thanks again...

Canadaquick question
to get my resume ready in earnest and I was wondering -- all of my jobs and education are all Canadian based so, I was thinking that at the bottom of my resume of putting, "Fully accredited to work within the USA."
What do you think of that? I just think that when they look at my Canadian-centric based resume they'd wonder and thus, just slip to the bottom of the pile?
Thanks all.

CanadaCan't cash CDN check in US
Pffft, US banks can do this. They have to route it through collections and it might cost a bit and take awhile, but they can. I did it twice and it took about 10 days for the cheques to clear and cost 10 bucks each, but banks can do it. They're just being lazy. Talk to customer service and not the tellers, that might get you farther.

This is exactly what happened to me. I was able to deposit the cheque too. Mine took a bit longer, about 3 weeks or so, but it can be done. Chase bank does it. Not sure about other banks though

Hilarious, Flames. I'll deport you back to Canada! :)
I'm heading back at the end of the month to spend a week up at Lake Simcoe at a cottage. Cannot wait!

Personally could care less about illegals. Doesn't bother me that they are here. I sleep great every night knowing I came here legally, and not worried about the police picking me up and deporting me, of course there are some days i wish they would deport me back to Canada, lol

No doubt. It was the most random thing that ever happened to me. Ever. I remember when he first flew up to meet me after 3 months of talking every single day. I was like ####### am I doing?????? THen I saw him and well. That was pretty much that.

This is great! Gosh reading your stories makes me feel normal, like how I met Chris wasn't too weird after all! I was worried they would find it strange at the interview! I love reading how random love can happen! :energy:

CanadaHow did you meet?
I love these threads -- makes me feel so normal. I met my husband in an online a travel forum. I was researching and prepping to go to South East Asia and he was going to Australia. They had an off topic section and one day all my 'buddies' weren't around and i sent out a message asking where everyone was, where all my friends were. He sent me a PM that said I'll be your friend if you like. Then we started talking every day and well, the rest is history.

Never in my life did I think that would happen to me -- I had no motive to meet anyone, wasn't looking at all and BAM! Who knew. That was back in 2002.

Canadahas anyone traded in a g-2 license
Hi there.
I live in Maryland too and I had a G1 that I could ahve traded for a full license here had I not let it expire! So, I had to take the test adn the road test. So, they do NOT paya attention to the graduated licensing here at all. If you have a valid license in Ontario, you have one in Maryland.

Good luck. OH, the MVA sucks, we spent 6 hours there today doing my final license test and transfer and it was a gong show.

Just trade it in, you're good to go. I wish I'd renewed my learner's in Ontario before I got here.
:D

Hey all.
I am trying to figure out what kinda of license the state of maryland will give me once I get there. I have a canadian g-2 which that system to me is stupid but anyways. Has anyone traded in there g-2 for a us license and what did you get? A full license? I have looked the mva up and found some info on beginner drivers ect but none of it answered my question. Thanks in advance

I know have a full license that's good for 5 years.

GOod job on that, Huggles. LIe I said, I could have traded my G1 for a full on license. Wish I knew -- I thought it was invalid as it was out of country. Ontario is considered out of state here in Maryland. Would have saved me from doing the damn road test. TWice.
:D

Personally, when I decided to move to the US I made the decision not to take my G license test. My thought being, they would either let me trade in the G2 for a full license, or they would ask me to take a road test. I had a 50/50 chance. If I was to take the test in Ontario, I would have a 100% chance of taking a test. I could either possibly avoid a road test, or be guaranteed of having to take a road test. And it worked out!

I found it strange they gave me a 5 year license when my GC expires next year, but It seems like that isn't completely abnormal.

CanadaQuestion for freelancers
Does anyone here freelance? If so, do you have canadian clients? How do you work the tax situation out? I have the potential to get a fairly large job and they're trying to figure out how to work the taxes. I know that there is an agreement between the US and Canada and they are saying that they'd withhold a certain percentage and that I'd fill out a certain "WN" IRS tax form. Does anyone know what these forms are?

I'd like to provide them with the information in order to make it easier for them so that I may get this job. Thanks in advance if anyone happens to know this information.

Very best,

Yeah, I thought the same thing! I was so freaking nervous and it was so chill. That being said, don't worry about that feeling, revel in the fact that you're all done! I cannot wait to be at the point where I never have to worry about immigration again. Never. I'll have my two passports, my two citizenships and I can just go about my life without forever wondering what stage I'm at, the waiting, the wondering and the collecting of data.
Congrats, you're in a good place.

I thought the K1 interview was anticlimactic. I wanted like a Darth Vadar like guy in a chair - sort of Dr. Claw's chair on Inspector Gadget asking me questions... tapping his fingers in a methodical manner while deciding my fate.

Really? REALLY? That freaking made me laugh. don't get me wrong, I have a cat that I love to absolute bits and I'm going to be grief struck when its her time to go but oh my god. That's a little bit much. It made me think of the Office for some reason, that chick angela and dwight kills her cat and puts it in the freezer?

I dunno... I'm rambling.
:D

let us know if she gets it, okay? I'm curious now.

This woman that I work with, missed two days of work last week because her cat had cancer and had to be put down. She came into work on friday, but broke down and was crying and couldn't get any work done. She submitted paperwork to apply for bereavement leave, for the death of her cat......

I have sympathy for people who lost a pet. They say that we feel so strongly about our pets because there is only love, and no mixed emotions like with humans. But, come on, bereavement leave for a pet dying?

CanadaEmployment Help
Not too much to ask for at all, Krikit! Thanks for the well-wishes! I hope it goes well -- it's contract work which is perfect for me and will allow me to keep my skill set up and give me a lot of contacts. i'm hoping it goes well but I am such a nervous nelly about things. also, we're in the midst of booking a trip to France for our belated honeymoon and I'd hate for them to be mad about that but, life goes on while you're waiting to hear back from people, right? But since it's contract work, I am my own free agent of sorts and can turn down assignments. I'll just have to ensure that I work very hard to put myself at the top of their totem. It's something for now and that's a good thing.
Good luck to everyone on their search, it's by no means easy in this economy...

Fabulous post, Sapphire. Thank you!

Oh. I got a rejection email for a job I had forgotten I had applied for! I'm over-qualified for the position. I would have rejected me too. The problem is that though my resume reflects a high level of responsibility and supervision, I am not interested in returning to that level of employment. At least not at this time, anyway. Oh my god! Same exact thing happened to me here at MY Job. NOt with the cleaning lady though. sometimes when it's nice I like to go and sit BY MYSELF outside and drink my coffee or whatever. The people who hang around down there and smoke feel like I need to be talked to, asked personal questions and participate. I dont' want to. I'm there to be alone and to have a moment to myself and I don't generally seek out other people unless we have a friendship and even then? Sometimes not.

So NOW, I have a reputation as being a little snotty and stand-offish and rude. WTFE... I was not put on this planet to placate everyone and I'm polite and such but god...

IT's okay, Nev... most people in the world can't stand blunt, to the point honesty. Believe me... most people would rather placate, kowtow or pander before they say what's really on their mind. I know that you and I are both polite but god forbid we want to just do our t hing. I find that makes some people really antsy.

/rant

PS. I am also extremely touchy about who I will share information about my life with. I find it rude to be asked personal questions and such and I require a lot of personal space and such. Why people don't get that it's impolite to impose these sorts of encroachments on others I will never understand...

Omg. Every day... I come in about 30 minutes early because I like the sound of silence in the office, and it's just something that helps me prepare for the day. I do it with every job... with that being said, every day the cleaning lady talks to me, and every day I try to be really nice and just nod but inside I am like: "I don't come to work 30 minutes early so you can talk to me!"

So finally this morning I told her: "I really have a lot of work to do, and I'm pretty sure you do too.." and I tried to say it in the nicest way possible.

Well... I MADE HER CRY! She started freaking crying! #######!? I was very nice about it... as nice as I could have possibly been.

And I just know the fact that she cried is going to make people think I'm the wicked witch of the west or something, but come on! Every day she talks my hear off about the same thing.

She got bit by a spider 7 months ago and she's STILL going on about it.

Sounds like she's really lonely. Maybe she has no friends, and no one else to talk to. Are you in an office where you could close your door? Maybe you could meet her later in the day or set some time aside to talk to her at coffee break. I'm sure she'd love that.

Are you thinking (the bolded part) me? yes.gif laughing.gif

No, everyone around the office. The maintenance guy is her boss and he came back and said: "And I thought you Canadians were nice!" and word travelled fast and now everyones like: "Nevada, made her cry!"

I wouldn't go out for coffee with this woman because she doesn't interest me at all. It's not my fault she's lonely nor is it my responsibilty. I know that's harsh, but I have enough on my plate than to have to worry if she has a friend. She'd be a sympathy friend... I don't want one of those. tongue.gif

I'm definitely ticked by it. I'm happy they've removed it from the requirements - that it can now be up to the beneficiary as to whether or not they wish to pursue this vaccine (as it always should've been). However, the money I put out for the first dose only three weeks ago could've been better spent elsewhere.

And, what irritates me is that it doesn't take affect for 30 days. So, what of the women going for their medicals and interviews now? Are they really going to be forced into this? The publication from CDC repeatedly states that the clarification of the criteria doesn't come into affect for another 30 days.

I certainly hope it works out for them as well.

Which does not discount your feelings! I guess i'm just saying they don't mean to be insensitive - i'm sure you will get scheduled soon, hang in there Wyatt!

Yup, that IS quite a dramatic example!

I'm sure they don't mean to be insensitive either, but wanting to reschedule the interview because of holidays? I suppose Christmas means something different to Christian folks, but I still can't grok the mentality of rescheduling an interview for mere convenience purposes...
