Man, I am SOOOOO far from even making this decision but... how exactly does one obtain dual citizenship? Does it mean that I can hold a Canadian AND US passport?
Your info is appreciated.

CanadaNOA2!
Hey Peachey!
Congratulations for one! That rocks! And one questions does your online status STILL say untouched? I'm just curious because man, I'd give anything to know that those guys are looking at our file! But, I'd be happier to get an approval in the mail like you did!
Congrats... .

Well we've been checking online everyday to see if they've touched our file and everyday it says they haven't. Today my fiance got a letter in the mail from the Department of Homeland Security stating that our petition was approved and being forward to the consulate. YIPEE!

Question: It says it expires on October 9. That means that I have to attend my interview and receive my K-1 Visa before that time right?

I can hardly contain my excitement. VJ forums are the first to know about this since you guys helped us so much with the application.

Thanks!

.. off to update my timeline.

CanadaDear Canada!

OH man, that is funny and endearing! Sometimes I feel like damnit, I just should go across the border to call! Our husband's sound alike in that regard, BTW; he hates the phone and hates calling bureaucratic offices even more and I don't blame him. He has called and would if I wanted him to but I'd rather do it and as well, I can finagle my way into some information better and more patiently than he can!

I won't be driving to the US but I think I might try Skype and it's been 3 months which I know is not that long but it just sucks not knowing anything about our case. For all the other papers, events and such I was able to 'babysit' the process from where I was and call and inform myself and such but in this case, I can't. It's not like I want/expect preferential expedient service because it's ME, I just would like to know what the situation is and where we stand. That's all.

But thanks a lot you guys for letting me rant and telling me your similar tales and such, it makes me feel better knowing that I'm not the only person out there fretting about a situation.
Best of luck to anyone who's still waiting and thanks and regards to all who have completed and took the time to answer my rant/query.
Much appreciated,
LGG

I didn't call them about our I-130 - but the wait times were not as long at that point. There is no reason why you can't call - don't know that it will help at all.

Your situation seems very similar to mine when I was in that stage. My husband was in the states and I was in Canada and of coarse you can't dial that 1 800 number from up here. Well....my husband does not like to phone people and wasn't too 'rushed' to call for me, so I drove to the border (buffalo) went to the nearest phone booth and called (I was in a very loud grocery store!!) I got to speak to someone but in order for me to get any answers or to put in a request to find out what's happening (since it had been longer than so many weeks since any contact with NCIS), they required my husband...the American...to call. So my whole trip to the states was a waste. So then, I had my husband call me on the cell phone while he was at the pay phone, he called them, and requested info, they said we will be contacted within 60 days about our inquiry.....5 days later I got my approval!!! So, if it's been a long time (not sure of exact time lapse) since they contacted you last, your spouse can call from US to request an inquiry. But GOOD LUCK and hope it gets to you soon.

Oh gosh... you drove to Buffalo to use the pay phone! Did you tell the border guards when they asked the purpose of your trip: "I need to use the phone" laughing.gif

CanadaDear Canada!
Wait times weren't that long at that point eh? You got approved in 80 days! I'd have been thrilled with that. I can't call actually - the number they provide only works within the USA...
I guess i'm just trying to see if perhaps I can incite some action on our petition as it seems to be doing nothing at all. No touches on line, no emails, nothing. I'm not loving the feeling of not being able to find out anything.

But thanks TM... your words are always really good.

CanadaDear Canada!
hello fellow canucks...

So, I'm sitting around reading the forums, waiting for our NOA2 to get here. Oh my gosh, the waiting is deadly! I waver between zen cool and freak-out mania!

My question to you all is this... as we're all the beneficiary, did any of you call the USCIS yourselves? My husband, the USC, has done it a couple of times to no avail but... I have infinite patience over him and would really love to do it myself but as I'm Canada, I cannot.

So, any of you other Canadians venture to try? IF so, how? When I was in the US last week or so, I called again (fruitless I tell you!) but the odd thing was, I told them that I was the beneficiary but whomever I spoke to allowed me to carry on with my query. I guess the person on the other end of the phone already knew that they weren't going to give me anything work with so...

Just wondering -- the waiting is so damn difficult sometimes... i just feel like if I could call and egg them on a bit with our file, maybe we could even get someone to look at it as it appears to not have even been touched at all.

Thanks all...
LGG

CanadaFreaking out about visit...
Hey again...

That has always been my issue. For all the years I've been with my husband (husband only for the past 7 months) I have never said boyfriend, fiance or anything. I have said 'going on holiday, staying in such and such place...' ready to extrapolate if need be but I have never been questioned further. Never. Not once. I know people say not to to lie. But it's not a lie and I have never lied to the people at the borders. I have just never been asked to go into further detail so, I haven't.

It's still an issue as I do feel like maybe I should but I will tell them the entire truth if asked but I start from the most minute point and move up from there Nothing is a lie, it's just not in the greatest detail ever.

Again, it helps I believe that I travel only with a carry -on and purse and nothing else and always have a return ticket. You have to tell yourself too that your're not doing anything wrong. Just be prepared if the line of questioning does lead you to the point of having to show your letters of ties to Canada.

best of luck, Jauque.... I know your fear well.

I was originally planning on bringing my laptop or personal dvd player but I think i'm going to jsut bring my purse and a small suitcase which I think can be called carry-on. Thanks for all the advice. I'm feeling more confident today, my only concern now is whether to say visitng my fiance or boyfriend. I don't think it really matters but I'm a horrible liar and if I say boyfriend and get asked additional questions I know I will get tongue tied and end up feeling like a liar and looking like a liar. So I will likely just say fiance and deal with the repricussions of that. Before we started this process I had almost no problems getting through customs but then it was boyfriend.

CanadaFreaking out about visit...
Hey there...
I know the feeling about that, it's scary! But 19 days is not long at all and as long as you're honest with the officer and you have all your ties to Canada, you'll be fine.

I just crossed last week and had no issues at all. The guard just asked me where I was going and when I'd be back and it was a snap. I worried a lot for nothing. BUT, in saying that, I will never cross the boarder pre-visa again without letters from my work, letters from the place I rent and a few bills and bank statements.

For the small amount of time it took to compile these items, it saves a lot of peace of mind. I also travel with just a carry-on bag as well which I'm sure helps.

It's normal to freak out but just go prepared. It's 19 days, not long at all. Dont' travel with anything suspicious though like resumes or items that you'd want to leave in the US like household stuff.

I wanted to bring a suitcase of stuff to leave with my husband but that sets of red flags and I can't bear the thought of being turned away.

You'll be fine. Just be honest, bring you letters of ties to Canada and pack light. Oh and the list/information in the first post is bang on.

Good luck and let us know how it went, okay?
best,
LGG

Thanks all.
Seriously did NOT think it would be this short. Am prepared mostly but still need my police record which I'll get in the next few days. I'm going to go through Commissionaires as well, seems the best way. I have all the forms at home in 'Dry Run' format just to ensure accuracy.

But holy! This approval snuck up on me, I hadn't thought it would come so quick -- it freaked all the knowledge out of me and now I feel like I'm floundering like a noob again!

I have my long form BC, I only got one copy though, I hope that's okay... I'll have to send it to them -- Should have got two. I'm originally from BC and it took only about 6 days to get so, it was no problem

Thanks a lot Trailmix too... I'll have a lot of questions I'm sure so please don't get too annoyed -- I'll pass on all the good info to all the other neophytes out there.

Thanks guys.

Awesome!! Congratulations!!

The best advice I have to offer is to do as much as you can to prepare NOW while you're waiting for NVC to receive your file. For example, if you don't have your long form birth certificate yet, you should order it immediately. It doesn't take that long to get (at least for Ontario birth certificates), but it's best to get that out of the way as soon as you can. Also, get your police certificate immediately. Make sure it specifically says that they checked CPIC or the NPR. I got mine from Commissionaires and it was pretty painless (once the guy who runs the checks was actually in the office, that is!) If your husband doesn't have everything ready for the I-864 submission, it's best to start working on that now (acquiring tax transcripts, employment letter, pay stubs, or whatever else you plan to send in.) I would also recommend filling out the DS-230 now and checking it for accuracy a whole bunch of times. That's all I can think of right now.

CanadaVaccination records?
Hi there!

Just an update, as I figure people'll want to know this. I called my old highschool in British Columbia -- they only keep vaccination records for so long and it's a person's obligation to keep their own records so.... I was S.O.L on that one. So I went for a hike today and dropped by a couple of walk in clinics to see if I could get them to write me a recommendation to get my blood taken for a Titer test. Holy freaking Moly, did I EVER get the run around. I walked to about 8 clinics and finally, I found one that A. Took me and B. Actually did the blood work.

Just a HUGE FYI out there for anyone, I hadn't even thought about my immunization records and for some reason today something tweaked but you all, get off your butt and make sure you can get them or get this blood work done. TITER Test as it also takes 3 weeks for the blood work and the results to come back. We're nowhere close to an interview yet but if we'd been assigned and I hadn't had this, I'd be freaking out.

Just so you all know.
Thanks to all who responded to me and such. You saved my Canadian Bacon.

For the medical in the near future, I'm looking at the list of all the vaccination requirements and I'm pretty sure I've had most of them done in my lifetime.

The only record I have is a vaccination card from when I travelled to South East Asia...

CanadaWow.
Thanks, that's the plan! I gotta say, I got used to the USCIS and thought i'd be waiting around for everything but it seems that every time I turn around and whoop, there's the next bit.

Not complaining, not complaining at all but it's a little like a quiet little nag that all of sudden shoots off and starts bucking wildly.

CanadaWow.
Just wanted to say, I know I ask a boatload of questions and all but today, I really got a HUGE justification. After waiting, not too, too long, actually, at CSIS for 3 months, the NVC stuff is flying at me so fast and furious that I I can hardly breath. It made me feel a little wobbly about OMG, what's next, you know?

Anyway, I just wanted to say, you guys have been great. And I appreciate the patience given to me for asking the same questions more than once, in the wrong area or whatever. But holy moly, I feel like it's coming fast and without you all here for quick reference and such, I have to say, we'd be a little lost.

Oh and an FYI for anyone near abouts where I am in the process, when we got our Choice of agent form via email, it totally INVITED us to send it via email and to pay our AOS fee via the online service. It also requested that when we did so, NOT to send a hard copy as well as this could be a cause of delays.

just thought I'd pass that on to you.

Thanks a bunch, it's not over yet and I feel a little woozy with the speed if it but I wanted to say this board has replaced a lawyer and useless phone calls and pretty much everyone I've "met" has been been nice.

You all make a long, hard journey a little sweeter.

CanadaWhere are you moving/living in the USA?
Any other Maryland-ers?

I'm from BC originally, lived in Montreal for 12 years and am now in Toronto and hopefully in a short while, home will be Maryland.
I love it there, can't wait!

CanadaDo I have to wait...
Beautiful, Dalene!
Thanks a lot... it's what I thought but I have these 'great' lucid moments of "oh no, what if... "
Thanks for clarifying.
Best,
LGG.

Glad your journey went well.

sends me the AOS package?

We're finished filling it out/compiling it using the forms we got from the website. We have paid our AOS bill and it's been accepted and our barcoded cover sheet has been generated.

On the AVR, it says the AOS fee bill was accepted and processed and that it will send us something in 6-8 weeks but we don't have to wait for that package do we? We can just send what we have?

Thanks, just checking...

Best, LGG

Hi LGG,

I just finished that whole process (completed at the NVC on June 22) and no, you don't have to wait to receive anything from the NVC. In fact, because I had signed up for the e-mail notification like you did, I never received any package in the mail. I gathered the requirements for both the applicant's documents and the AOS from the Dept. of State website and submitted it to them. I've put the links below:

http://travel.state..../info_3730.html
http://travel.state..../info_3190.html

The applicant doc info is 7 pages long, so make sure you check every page. Also, I sent both my husband's docs and the AOS together and it was fine. Just make sure you attach the bar coded sheets you got after your status showed as paid for the IV and AOS. Good luck!
