CanadaNovember interview in MTL
I can understand all that jazz and whatever, but I wouldn't mind waiting a few months if they would at least say "k, here's your date -- sorry it's 3 months away... " now it's impossible to plan anything or get cheap travel tickets or whatever. I guess it's just annoying as all the other counties process their interviews so damn fast -- people finish at NVC or send in package 3 and within a couple of weeks, they've been assigned their date...

i know, preaching to the choir, I does it!

CanadaNovember interview in MTL
Concurred and concurred. Bunch of a**hats, really. There are loads of us K1 and CR1s waiting. #######?
This waiting is worse than NOA2 or anything -- each day feels like a week and it's real fun living in a half-packed apartment trying to organize stuff etc., etc...

As I am sure you are all well more than aware...

Good luck to everyone, I am not blessed with patience and this is just trying it even more.

Hey all... I"m waiting too, we're a CR-1 visa but i figured I'd join too -- we have a CR interview thread but it's horribly depressing as it just is a good visual as to how long we'll actually be waiting.

For us... the wait for interviews has gotten longer, 100-144 days. Some people snuck in there soon but who knows why...

anyway, good luck to everyone. This last part of waiting is a killer.

So, I think that the DOS number there is not for CR/IR1 visas -- I believe it's for people obtaining non-immigrant status visas, no? Anyone who knows more, let me know but as far as I know, this is applicable to the K1s and that is it. OH and much congratulations, Domegirl, that is awesome news. So... that's a good thing. Oh and another optimistic thing, if I may? Since it's taking so long for an interview and stuff, I find that I am able to stow away more cash AND get all the little nitty-gritty things done at a more leisurely pace than I would have if we'd been scheduled tout de suite...

I wanted to pre-emptively thank everyone for their support and information along this journey. My husband and I will be leaving on the 6th of October and be staying in Montreal for 8 days for my medical and interview. (sadly we do miss family thanks-giving, but I won't complain) I just wanted ask if you could all give a once over on everything I am bringing and point out anything I am missing. <3

The medical is scheduled for the 7th at 11:00am. The list I have for them:
  • - vaccination records (one official and one hand written by my mom) & copy
  • - 3 color passport photos
  • - interview letter & copy
  • - passport & copy

The only concern I have about for the medical is some scarring I have on my arm. Stupid things we do when we are young. I will be honest about it with them. They are however 14 years old and I was never hospitalized or anything like that for it. If anyone had any experiences regarding this, is this something I should be freaking out about? I've convinced myself so far its something to frown at but not to ban me for life kinda thing.

The interview is scheduled on the 13th. For that I am bringing:
  • - interview letter
  • - passport & copy
  • - long birth certificate & copy
  • - marriage certificate & copy
  • - police record & copy
  • - 2 color passport photos
  • - I864 fill by my husband with most recent 3 yrs of taxes & copy
  • - I864 fill by mother-in-law (joint sponsor) with most recent 3 yrs of taxes & copy
  • - letter from mother-in-law indicated we will be moving down and staying with them
  • - husband's visa statement with US address & copy
  • - husband's bank record with US address & copy
  • - business plan and records for Ohio (we plan on starting a business soon as we move down) & copy
  • - uhaul quote & copy
  • - Canada Expresspost mailer

They oddly enough didn't as to bring proof of marriage. My husband and I have been together for over two years now. I am of course bringing it anyways. I am also bringing the I130 copy we had left over and the DS230 copy we had left over. If there is anything we are missing please let us know.

Funny story, originally he was going to stay in Canada indefinitely when he moved up here. So we have been going through the Canadian PR card registration. Then one day I said forget it lets move to the US. Although, in order to maintain his status we had to continue it out. Took us 2 years and 5 months, but he finally got his "interview" date. I use the term loosely cause all they want you to bring down is his past issued visa's and money. His date is on the 16th of October. The nice thing about the PR card, it maintains it's validity as long as he is always living with me, doesn't matter where. =D Although to get his Canadian citizenship he will of course have to live in Canada. We were actually kinda glad we did it this way, it gives us more flexibility in case I don't like the US. =P

Thank you all for going over this and wish us luck! I'm a nervous wreck, but who isn't going through this process. LOL =) <3

CanadaChanging name after CR-1 Complete...

Hey all, thanks for your replies... that's cool, actually -- i would like to do this.
Um... so far we're still waiting for our NOA2 so while we're in this process, can I go ahead and change my name on all my documents? Like Banking and Passport and such? Then when (soon, I hope!) we go for our interview in Montreal, I just bring in my documents and such to show them change of name?
In Ontario, we don't change the name on our Birth Certificate ( I don't want that) and I'll just change it everywhere else. this'll be okay?

For the interview, we have to bring in all the documents anyway so, it'll all be par for the course.
let me know and then this'll be something I can do as I'd like to.

CanadaChanging name after CR-1 Complete...
don't congratulate me yet as we're far from completing our visa journey. So, I'm wondering... since we had to wait eons for our marriage certificate and such, I had to choose between starting our Visa process or changing my name so, I chose Visa process of course... but, now that we're in motion, I realize that I can't change my name whilst we're being adjudicated and such that's fine but let's say after we've been approved and receive our visa how would I go about changing my maiden name to my married name?

I would very much like to do this. I would have liked to right after getting married but here in Ontario, we had to wait for about 9 weeks before we got our marriage cert (which you need to change your name, FYI) so, I opted to send our Visa papers instead.

I've been doing some research (trying to) find info on this but can't... anyone else do this? How would I go about it...
Thanks a lot,
LGG

So I was planning to keep my maiden name until I have my church wedding in September 2010. I know that I 100% want to change my last name, but wanted to kind of keep my courthouse wedding on the downlow for now.

However, I'm debating doing my AOS in my married name, so that I will get my greencard in my married name and not have to worry about changing it later.

Can I do that, and keep my SSN # and driver's licence in my maiden name until next year? Or, would that make things too complicated?

Should i just change everything now while I can and just go with my married name?

Name changes aren't really a big deal in my career but usually people are more well established in their career before they change their name. I keep regular contact with reporters and industry contacts, so I don't want to lose my name just yet because I'd like to establish myself in NYC first. However, on the other side of things, I don't really have a lot of contacts yet, so it might be easier just to go by my married name right off the bat....

I'm also debating hyphenating my name - although that would make it really long. The more I think about it, the more I think it will be easier to just change everything now.... Hmmm

What do you think?

Thanks, lgg,

Yes, it is good to be prepared when you get to the border. If you don't need your evidence, great - but if you do need it and don't have it, well, you will be kicking yourself instead of enjoying a visit with your loved one. Glad you had an easy time.

Good luck with your immigration journey.

I agree totally. one visit they didn't ask to see it from me, the other they did. I got through both times. I almost didn't bring it the second time then I thought, what would it hurt to carry it along! Good luck on your journey.

CanadaCrossing the border with a Visa pending...
Hey all... thought I would just give you my input to crossing the border with a visa pending. We're still in the early stages -- waiting for our I-130 to be approved but nonetheless... I was a little stressed.

So, I brought all my ties to Canada letters with me... and crossed the border with no problem -- didn't even need them. The boarder guard asked my two questions, I was honest and off I went.

I do suspect though, that in the later stages this might be harder so, I plan to always travel with my letters of ties to Canada while I need them.

So, just wanted to give you all some feedback as to how that went as I know I was super stressed out before the actual trip to see my husband.

Thanks all...
hope all your cases and such are going really well.
best,
LGG

CanadaChanging your Name after Marriage
Hey Colleens... .

This is what's giving me the most confusion -- this is just an assuming of our husband's name -- our B.Cs stay the same AND, the B.C. is what is used as the main piece of ID to obtain any and all pieces of identification, right?
I do want to change my passport as I do want to be able to have my Greencard issued in my married name but frankly? I don't see why I'd have to change my SSN either... as both names are legal. Good information all around, thanks guys...
smile.gif
LGG
I'll just take my time getting the new passport and such as long as have it in time for my interview, which at this point seems years in arriving, and do all the other banking and stuff.

Thanks all...

QUOTE (Colleens @ Jun 11 2009, 03:07 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I have always been told that you should never change your SSN to your married name. Unless you complete a legal name change your maiden name is alway legal to use as it is what appears on you birth certificate. I never changed my name on my SSN when I got married the first time and had no issues with filing taxes etc under my married name. When I divorced and returned to using my maiden name I did need to get a new passport. Your can continue to use your passport with your maiden name once you marry, but just carry your marriage cert with it when you travel. I did have a friend who was questioned about it and luckliy she had the certificate with here!!

Trailmix...
You're just great, you really are. You always have great advice, and sage answers -- it's great that despite the fact that you're pretty complete with your journey you help all of us lost ducks out. Thank you that's great information you provided me with. YOu rock. smile.gif

Tankgurl... good to know -- I'd wondered about that, thanks for the information.

Best to you both,
LGG

As far as I know, you will always still be considered a Canadian Citizen, even if you become a US Citizen. Canada will always recognize you as being Canadian unless you apply to the Court of Canada to have your citizenship taken away. That's how I understand it anyways. So why wouldn't we claim our part of CPP, we've paid into it so far.

CanadaChanging your Name after Marriage
Hey Tankgurl...

I know, right?? So much bureaucracy and red tape that I'm afraid to mess up. I'm mainly confused about the passport # thing AND, the fact that you need your BC to change your passport but if the name on your BC is still your Maiden name, can't you just go on right ahead and keep on using the passport with the maiden name on it? And then, when filling out forms just put other names box/funtion into use and put husband's name in? You know?

RIght, it's confusing as hell and i have received some awesome info here, people have changed their names but their situations are not exactly the same as mine, thus... still standing on the edge of a decisions.

OH and can we collect our CPP living in the USA??? Really? I don't plan on becoming a US citizen so...

No worries, you aren't the only one that is confused. smile.gif

I just wasn't sure if there was somewhere that we had to officially record our name change in Canada since we aren't actually residing here anymore. But I am still planning on claiming my CPP when I am old and need it, I've contributed to the fund long enough dang it! smile.gif

Someone told me when you get married in Canada, the forms are automatically filled out when you do your marriage license, so I am confused as what the heck to do since we aren't actually getting married or residing here.

CanadaChanging your Name after Marriage
Hey friends...
Have asked this question a billion/majillion times and am still confused! Yep, I am... we've filed for our I-130 to get our CR1 visa and I haven't changed my name yet. Now that we're waiting for our NOA2 from the CSC, i would like to assume my husband's name. My question is this, do I have to change it on my passport just yet? IF I do, since I'll be issued another passport, with another number will this have any effect on our filing at this point? When we get to the National Visa center part, if i put in another passport number, will that raise red flags?

is it best to keep my maiden name until this journey is over? I haven't heard so much conflicting information as I've not really been answered in regard to using a different passport # midway through the process.

Oh, and while i'm at it, since I'll hopefully be going to the US soon-ish, do I have to change my passport at all? Since it's just an marital assumed name and my Birth cert. will remain the same?

Thanks all. I apologize for posting similar questions about this and perhaps hijacking this thread, I just don't want any unnecessary hold ups but I would like to assume my husband's last name.

Best to all and thanks so much,
LGG

You need to officially change your name in Canada as well.

Sorry can't remember off hand which province you're from, but here is the ON link:

http://www.ontario.c...ividuals/119597

Formal Name Change – Adult (16 and older)
A formal change of name involves legally changing a person´s first and/or second name and/or last name.

To change your name as an adult, you must be 16 years of age or older and have lived in Ontario for at least one year before submitting a change of name application.

Applicants who are 16 or 17 years old may also apply to have their names changed as an adult, provided they obtain the written consent of the person(s) who have lawful custody of them, unless the applicant is married or a judge has dispensed with the consent requirement.

When your name is legally changed, you will be issued a change of name certificate indicating your new legal name(s). A new birth certificate will be issued if you were born in Ontario. Otherwise, you will need to apply to the other province or territory in Canada or other country where you were born for a new birth certificate.

Fees
The fee for a formal name change is $137.

Service Delivery Times
Where applications are complete and accurate the service delivery time is 6-8 weeks. Applications that require further verification will result in a delay in the stated service time.

***********************************************************
But in the same breath, they also indicate this so perhaps you don't have to go the name route - I know, tis confusing:

Assuming/Unassuming a Spouse’s or Partner’s Name
Assuming a name due to a relationship is the most common practice in Canada. A person may choose to assume the use and be recognized by their spouse’s or partner’s surname. This is not a change in legal name, however, is generally accepted. The vast majority of people choose this option.

There is no need for a formal application. You may simply assume your spouse’s/partner’s last name (surname) or a combination of your last name and your spouse’s/partner’s last name (hyphenated surname).

The benefit of not completing a legal name change is that it does not change the name on your birth certificate.

If you wish to use your legal name again, you simply revert back by presenting your birth certificate as proof of your legal name.

Fees
No fee required.

How do I change my name?
Once you are married or in a conjugal relationship (common-law or same-sex marriage), you may apply to change all your identification (health card, drivers licence, passport and banking information etc.) with your marriage certificate. No formal name change is required.

Personally, I wouldn't ever change my name legally like that in Canada. I think that changes your birth certificate, and I don't want to do that. Plus, I don't see the point of changing my SIN and Healthcard since I'll be living in the US. I guess if I ever moved back I would look into it. For Revenue Canada, I would also just provide them with my married name and then send a copy of the marriage certificate when I file my taxes.

For me I didn't even do that - everythig in Canada still uses my maiden name - you know - at times lke this it would be simpler to be a man - I think it would bother my husband of course smile.gif

CanadaDoing the whole dual citizen thing......
Man, I am SOOOOO far from even making this decision but... how exactly does one obtain dual citizenship? Does it mean that I can hold a Canadian AND US passport?
Your info is appreciated.
