CanadaFamily Day!
Man, I have to say, I am really appreciating Family Day! It's a statutory holiday implemented by the province of Ontario. It was really nice not to go into work today! Oh and that also means I only have 4 days left at my day job and then I am done!

Holy. Moly.

Hope you all had a good weekend! I am not around much lately as I am busy packing, organizing and hanging out with my friends and such before I make my P.O.E....

Hope everyone is doing well, forms are being sent in and approved and that you're all doing just great. I plan on spamming the board again soon once I'm at home, settled in the US.

Yep, we get one but it does NOT mention this envelope at all...

Red - They put the information in the interview letter for K1s.

Do CR1's get an interview letter?

Merci Beaucoup, T.M....

:D

I also figure that with all the other people who got interviews, they'll want a refresher in this as well. I didn't get this info in my interview letter, either. .

yeah, yeah, I know, I know... yet another Express envelope question but I have a real, honest question!!!

So, I'm to buy an Express envelope from Canada Post in what size again? And am I just paying for the envelope or am I actually paying for the postage that it w ill require to have everything sent to me?

Thanks and sorry for the NOobish question...

Much relieved to hear/read that, Wyatt...

Happy Sunday!
:D

*sigh*

Sorry to disappoint, Froggie, but the truth is that I never had a shag carpet, nor did I ever sacrifice a goat. Yep, I'm pretty straightedge.

My family's cabin has multi-coloured shag carpet in the bedrooms though. THAT'S no joke.

I had a red shag carpet. You couldn't really notice after a few weeks.

You sacrificed a goat?????
wasn't that messy?

It's funny -- well over a year ago, my wife proposed that we should create a "Zombie Contingency Plan", pinpointing a location where we should meet if there's a major world catastrophe. So I cross referenced an atlas, Google maps, scrawled a pentagram on the floor, sacrificed a goat and threw some runes to determine that Jamestown, North Dakota would be the statistical halfway point between D.C. and Vancouver. So that has always been our proverbial "disaster meetup" location.

Ironically, Jamestown is home to the World's Largest Buffalo. It's ironic, because my wife was born and raised in Buffalo, New York.

The more you know...

I think it sounds amazing, to be honest. If I had time to stop and stay places and check it out, it could be super fun. I would LOVE to see Deadwood too and Montana...

You're going to have such an adventure...

Good luck at the interview tomorrow, hope they don't man handle you too much!
;)

Thanks! Yeah, I'm literally the ONLY person I know who has thought that driving across the continent is a GOOD idea. I'm seriously looking forward to it. I'm aiming to drive from where I live near Vancouver to Billings, Montana on the first day, Billings to Madison, Wisconsin on the second day, and Wisconsin to D.C. in the third day. It's a challenge, and I love challenges! I know I can do it. I relish the idea. It has sort of a Vanishing Point feel to it, minus the methamphetamines, of course. :P

When's your medical little Miss Mouse? Sorry to hear that you faint -- are you bringing someone with you to help you get home?
Once it's done, you'll be fine... one more step closer, my dear...
:)

I am quite lucky... I could walk to Medisys and to the consulate from my place  I'll take the bus, because it's a long walk in winterland. So, as much as I hated the wait, I still feel lucky about the easiness for the consulate and medical part.
The worst part will be the blood test - I always faint :(

I'll have to go back to Vancouver one day to see more than the airport. Oh, and about Deadwood and South Dakota, lucky you!

Well, they had an area where they would take things not allowed and and then give you a ticket to reclaim it afterward. So you could, but I think it was for stuff that people forgot to leave behind not as a storage facility. He gave us a claim ticket for the 3 timbits we had left...

Our hotel, Le Square Philippe had a storage safe AND the stored our stuff for us when we checked out today. They were great and most hotels have storage facilities for you...

There are signs everywhere at the consulate stating what you CAN NOT bring in with you so...

I have a question re security screening at the consulate. My interview is not until feb 24th but in preparation process, I was thinking about car keys and cell phones. I know they are not allowed in the consulate. Do you just leave them at the hotel? I somehow dont feel safe leaving them at the hotel. Can you bring them with you and deposit them at the consulate and get them back when you are done?

I remember reading in a review about this but cant seem to find it. Does anyone know?

OH also agree with the mainland/island thing. I lived in Nanaimo for about most of my childhood/teenager-hood. I lived in Vancouver for a couple of summers on break from Uni in Montreal and I used to ride my bike from downtown Vancouver to Horseshoe bay ferry terminal.

Geez.

Do you mean work or social networking? I read this as social networking but I do find that the two are pretty well linked so...

I, to be honest, have no ideas for you but I plan to volunteer once I get to the states, volunteer and take a couple of classes. I'm hoping to get into some sort of environmental type design/web/marketing work.

I may have to go pro-bono for awhile, dunno...

CanadaGood Luck, Froggie!
Awwww! Thanks guys! You're super sweet! I think I have everything under control but of course the weather's supposed to be iffy-ish. I'm just worried about my poor kitty who'll be freaking right out. I'm hoping that any delay will not be too bad and that they don't cancel. But so far, Friday's supposed to be between 3-8cm -- we can do that, right??? I had my first minor meltdown this morning because of it. But with all the stuff going and stuff to be done, that's been my only real one so far -- I consider myself and my husband lucky as I tend toward the loose cannon when things get rangy!

The POE itself, am hoping that'll go without a hitch. I'm giving myself 4 hours before my flight to get it all done and go through the last hoops.

My moving POD was picked up yesterday and it seems like it's all good to go.

Thanks a lot you guys and thanks a lot to VJ in general for the valuable assistance. I also signed up for EI benefits yesterday which was something I would never even thought was a valid option for me without VJ.

I will let you all know how it goes.

CanadaPeople? I POEd...
I want say, bad weather or not get there early, I had oodles of time but customs line was HUGE and security is painful and long and everything. You could and might end up sitting awhile in secondary and whatnot. Better to have to much time to kill than miss your flight. If you miss your flight, it's up to you to take care of it.

Reading the good luck thread, it IS kinda nice that you all were thinking about me and sending good wishes, as I do you when you're all going t hrough your stuff.

It's pretty cool. aaaaaaah... I am VERY relaxed right now. This rocks.
:D

PS... We did sit on the tarmac for a bit getting deiced and I think I arrived like 40 minutes late but I never care about that as what counts is that the plane gets into the air.
lggNot TellingCanada2010-02-26 19:26:00
CanadaPeople? I POEd...
Oh my god, I almost freaking out when I woke up at 6am this morning and saw 8" of fresh blowing snow! The cab ride was a shztshow as the guy wanted to charge me an extra 10$ for my cat. I pretty much told him to ** off as I'd booked this taxi the day or two before and told them about the cab adn they quoted me my regular rate. he was a rude hack of a human being. nice start to the POE.

Then... I had to wait in line to check in because I had my cat and as soon as I walked up the counter, Whoopi Goldburb (thats' what she looked like) said, "what's that stink? Is that your cat that stinks like that?" I BEG your pardon? My cat smells like Bounce from sleeping on the laundry.

So... that's that. I wait in line at Customs and then get to the counter and say I want to activate my Visa and then go to Secondary. This really nice woman takes my passport and my big manila envelope and then she takes my finger prints and a retinal scan? I dunno, she shone something in my eyeball.

Then she said, let's get you processed so you and your kitty can catch your flight. she called me up like 10 minutes later, I signed a couple of things and she gave me back my visa with the stamp in it and said, welcome to american, hope you have a good day.

Totally easy. Not a single question about anything or whatnot.

My cat? No drugs or anything at all was the biggest sweetie of life. I told Wyatt already, she was so quiet and calm that she was more like a travel buddy than anything. I love her more for being so easy going and awesome today and kitty has never been on a plane or in an airport.

It was a good day -- the weather freaked me out a TON but the flight wasn't even delayed at all -- we sat for 15 minutes on the tarmac waiting for deicer but that's it.

I am home now with my husband. he met me and kitty at the airport with lattes and we drove home and then went out for dinner to celebrate POE. Kitty is afraid and hiding and I hope that she and my husband's cat will make friends...

Thank you everyone for you advice and support and all the help along the way. I am home finally. It's nto really sunk in yet as I am really dazed and tired.

Hmmm.... Kat... you said that one has to cross the border and activate the visa and THEN move the stuff? I'm curious, as i sent my stuff ahead of me, hadn't activated the visa yet. I did the upack thing, used a POD and gave them a copy of my visa page in my passport...

CanadaHere's some fun questions . .
It's just a little sprained. I tape it up to do the unboxing and unloading as i can't stand not able type properly. I want to give HUGE kudos to AFB Upack. they were awesome. I have just unpacked all my glass, pottery and unbreakables. Not a single thing broken or chipped. we'll see how well the PCs survived the ride.

I do have to tell anyone thinking of using them as they are great BUT the onus is on you to pack stuff well. I had everything bungee-corded down and if there were any spaces between boxes, I stuffed them full with old blankets, towels and spare boxes so that there was no movement or sliding. Seems to have worked.

I'm very happy with the service I got. They did a good job.

When I checked on Monday the internet said it was accepted at Montreal Post Office at 10:25......51 hours later....DELIVERY!!! I do! I'm living in a small town in MD -- we are indeed neighbors -- just google mapping a way to get myself into town as I don't have a car yet. Or a license here. I figure I'm going to go and get me some exercise as well...

Hello, neighbour!!!

Seriously? That is some awesome news!! i have been reading your story from the get go and this is the best news I"ve heard all day! NOw go on, get out of here and go with your husband!
:D
congats, Brock00.. that is awesome.

.........because I have my VISA!!!!! Thank you, thank you thank you!!! I can't explain how happy I am right now....so just believe me!! LOL

So, two years and two days later, my family can be a family again!

I found out Monday that the package was in Montreal post office and have been checking the progress since. The computer system for Canada post, said "Montreal post office" until this morning when it said that it had arrived in Hamilton at 8:00 this morning. My next thought was....okay it's in Hamilton, now how many more days until they deliver it?? Well, I called the 1800 number at 10:00 and it said, "OUT FOR DELIVERY". WOO HOO!! Then I impatiently sat in my house trying to keep busy and hoping for the best but expecting the worst (normally I don't think about the worst but if you know what I went through then you would know why). Finally at 1:47 pm (not that I noticed the time or anything LOL) the doorbell rang!!! Of coarse with my past experience, I immedeitly looked at the thickness of the envelope that she was holding and could tell that it was thick!!! I sat down and slowly opened the envelope so I could remember this beautiful day and found my passport with the VISA, a letter of explanation and the 'sealed envelope'!!

So...I wanted to let you guys know that I am once again a happy camper and thank you for all your help and support throughout this process!!

I'll be back on later as soon as I get off cloud 9 to ask a few questions regarding POE.

Thanks

I'm still not nervous... I wonder why? I don't get nervous very often though, so maybe I won't! I always THINK I'm going to be nervous, and then in the nerve-inducing situation, I'm actually calm, cool, collected and confident. Let's hope the same thing happens on Friday morning!

I just sent Hotel Dauphin an email, asking whether or not I could extend my check-out time on Friday. I imagine I'm going to want a nap afterwards, since I'll be getting up at the equivalent of 2:30 AM, thanks to my body being on West Coast time...

It's so awesome that they have computers with internet in every room though. That's a MAJOR bonus. If I have time, I'll write up my review right then and there. Unless I'm denied, in which case I might just jump out the window.
