CanadaHow close/far away are/were you from your American/Canadian significant other?
Oh fun! This is a cool thread...
From Toronto the our house in Maryland about 500 miles. about an hour in the air and we have never driven it but I heard it takes about 9 hours....
Soon enough? We won't be that far apart at all!!!!
:D

500 miles too far for too long...

CanadaDo I need a Visitor's Visa?
Yep. Agreed here. Stack up the coffers as the cost for all this and moving and such is not insignificant. It won't seem that long once it's done and it will be WELL worth it rather than being denied. EVery single time I visited, I had all my letters showing proof of ties to Canada. Letters from both my employers stating when I left for vacation and when I was to return to work. A copy of my lease and a letter from my landlord and a boatload of other stuff. Getting denied would suck AND it would make future travel really difficult.

If I were in your situation, I would find another work after my contract ends and make short visits to the US. If that's not an option for you, be prepared to be denied at the border.

CanadaDo I need a Visitor's Visa?
Ah yes... we would have all loved that!
:)

I know it will be longer than six months, but we are starting the process next month. So say it takes a year. We file in March, it would be done by the time my six months in the States is up (with a travel back to Canada in between for the interview and medical in Montreal, which is very close to where I live) ..

My plan is completely flexible, which is why I'm here. I think I just want to know the easiest way to a) file for the K1 and b) in the meantime, be able to visit my fiance for a significant amount of time.

Comme toujours, T.M...

Word!

Oh and Wyatt made some good points too.
:)

I don't think it matters at all. I also don't think they are necessarily wasting their time - when viewing these posts I am sure they do it on their own time, not when they have interviewees waiting out in the office

So if this is what they choose to do in their down time - good on them - it makes for interesting reading i'm sure! (If you were a CO, wouldn't YOU read it?)

As to any effect reading this stuff has on their actual job, I assume it is a non-issue. I think it's insulting to suggest otherwise. While they are all human, they are also professionals and what we write on VJ should not and probably does not have any effect whatsoever on how they adjudicate anyones application.

CanadaGood luck to all the Canadians with interviews next week!
Zansgirl, you have NO idea... that comment by whomever made it really freaked me out. But seriously? Like they have time to sift through all of us and all their interviewees to figure out who's who, you know? What a huge waste of time on their part.

I didn't think about it once while we were at our interview. They don't care, I'm sure. even if we/I/you spouted off great loads of slander they'd probably be like, "meh..."

but yeah, when that was said, I was like, whoa, they should probably focus on doing their jobs rather than reading a website and waiting for a certain poster to make her appearance so we can give her some grief. The whole notion is rather silly in hindsight....
;)

woul somon bring me up to speed on this?? Someone mentioned Montreal reads the Forums...

They SERIOUSLY do not know in Montreal when I get there...that I am "Zansgirl"?..they would refer to me as (my real life name)......I was so confused when a poster make a remark about them calling Lgg..Lgg!

Yup..where is my coffee??

CanadaCanadian Guilt?
Yes! Every single generalization known to mankind forever and ever and ever!!! I mean every single last one without fail and without a doubt, no matter what!!

END GENERALIZATIONS NOW!!!!!
;)

I know... I'm a bit of a pr1ck!
Sorry...

Ya know what I mean.... geeeesh!
:D

Yeah. My mindset is that my move to the U.S. will be a permanent one. I can't see how or why it wouldn't be, barring the breakdown of our marriage or the U.S. becoming a fascist state...

ALL of them?

CanadaCanadian Guilt?
Ah... nothing like a good stew of mutton with a side of carpet fibre...
Mmmm, mmmmmm... good!

Yeah, generalizations! So freaking annoying.

Yes, that one -- the one I sacrifice goats on!

lggNot TellingCanada2010-02-04 16:25:00
CanadaCanadian Guilt?
Yeah,I get that a lot too! Truth is? I don't love Toronto at all -- I love my little town in MD more. Besides, you go somewhere, you make a life and hope it's all good -- could be anywhere. I think a lot of Canadians also have a very small view of what the US is. This will NOT be a popular opinion here and I apologize but I am often amazed at the ignorance of even my friends. The small minded, short sighted views of what the U.S. really is. And yes, it is some of those things but those things and those ignorant views don't preclude the fact that there is a lot of awesomeness down there too.

There is everywhere -- you just have to keep you mind open to find it.

Yeah, the general response to me announcing I am moving to the US was: you must really love him! I don't know many people in Canada that would ever entertain the thought of moving to the US. Other countries, in some cases, but not the US.

lggNot TellingCanada2010-02-04 11:04:00
CanadaCanadian Guilt?
No. No guilt it all -- there are proven reasons as to why some consulates are more difficult to get through than others -- I feel bad for innocent people getting caught in that quagmire, but it exists for a reason. ANd it's not like getting our visa as Canadians is a total cake walk either.

So no. No guilt here and that's odd for me as a lapsed catholic....
:)

CanadaLast Minute Question for POE
Okay, THAT is exciting! Coming home to him? Or vice versa? Instead of waiting for him to come online or call!

THAT is exciting... that just made me snap out of my reverie and busy-ness and go, OH RIGHT!!! COOL!
Congrats, Arabella... that's very cool...
:)

UPDATE! Sean and his dad got in at about 7:25pm last night! I ruined dinner and had to run out to Publix to get a chicken and some sides. We stayed up visiting until about 11:30 and then I got up at 6am and made breakfast (that I did not ruin!). I am at work now because Sean doesn't want me to use up any more sick days . . . Sheesh he just gets here and he is already telling me what to do! (I love it though)!

So glad I get to come home to him tonight! :)

CanadaHusband not a PR of Canada nor Canadian Citizen
I was thinking the same thing, myself. We all needed Birth cert., and all the other stuff in order to make it through the USCIS and then NVC... I'm curious now. Sorry this doesn't help, MsTangie, but just curious as to how this could even be...

I'm just surprised that you made it through the whole process in Canada without him being a Canadian PR or Citizen. That strikes me as something that would have raised a red flag (and not a Canadian one...) at the very outset of the process.
