CanadaApplying for SSN
Thx for your answers everyone smile.gif

I just called the closest POE here in Florida, they refused to import my car (once again) and told me I can't import my car untill I get married and have a Florida driver's license huh.gif
And of course, in order to get my Florida drivers license I need to get a SSN ... I am a bit lost here unsure.gif

So how do you guys did to import your cars ?

CanadaApplying for SSN
Hello everyone smile.gif

I made it here Sunday night around 23:15 smile.gif Trip was very smooth and I enjoyed it a lot (except in NY where I did hit severe thunder storms and could not see anything in front of me on the road). Other than that the rest of the tip was sunny.

POE was in Lacolle and I have to admit it wasn't very smooth as the agent processing my K1 was very new to this (in fact it was his first one and it took about 3 hours to process as he had to read the guide)
Also, they did not want to import my car at POE as they said I do not really have a status in the USA for now .. so they told me to import my car after I get married (that is after they told me to import it from canada and I said "I do not think so" .. lol)

so I do have some questions .

1: Do I need to apply fo SSN prior to getting married ?

2: When I apply for SSN, there are 4 choices on the form at question 3 (Citizenship)
> U.S citizen (obviously not this one for now)
> Legal alien allowed to work
> Legal alien not allowed to work
> Other

So which one do I need to check ?

3: how can I go about importing my car now that I am in Florida as my insurances will run out in 33 days ?

Thanks in avance for your help smile.gif

Just a question about that part ... Maybe I am way out of base but do we need to bring tax filings ????
I know they ask financial proofs like income, bank deposits, employer letter etc for the I-134 but I did not see anywhere where they ask for tax filings unsure.gif

Ugh. So Hawaii already has the lowest paid State workers in the union. Well today our Governor announced that in order to close the state budget, all state workers are going on a 3 day/month furlough. Meaning - no pay for 3 days a month. Get this. . . . . . FOR TWO years. And better yet, it seems that we're expected to show up to work for the days we do not get paid.

3 days/month = 36 days per year = nearly 2 months without pay/year.

Who can afford that? I don't know whether to laugh or cry. crying.gif laughing.gif

I wonder what it's like for guys, adjusting-wise? Do guys get homesick and cry or is that purely a woman thing wacko.gif

We sure do feel homesick too. Everyone going through major changes like this is affected. The thing is that the adaptation will be faster or slower and easier or harder depending on people, but you will feel better, it just takes time.
Hang in there, you'll be fine good.gif

Is it safe here yet.... tiptoeing around.... OK so last night, I just broke down in tears. This wave of homesickness hit me, like a ton of bricks. Out of NOWHERE. All of sudden I just wanted to hug my Mom, I miss her so much, more than anyone or anything. We are so close and it's so hard, it's been almost 6 months since we've been apart. I just want to go over for a cuppa tea or Sunday dinner, just sit down and talk like we used to. Sometimes I look around like what the hell am I doing here? I gave up my home, great job, closeness to fam, good friends, and I'm now here! Not that I'm complaining because I truly can say I am happy here and I made the sacrifice for love.... but what a sacrifice that is. The good news is, I'm going back home the first weekend in June so I can't wait to see my Mom then. So last night when I burst into tears, Glen was so supportive and kind. He made me tea, listened to my rambling, rubbed my back and just made it better. I am lucky he's so wonderful in so many ways and understands.

Give it time Jill and the sickness will slowly fade away. Of course you will always remember home, but the sickness will fade away and you will get used to your new home country smile.gif

Hang in there smile.gif

Why in the hell do some people need to spend that much for a wedding ??? I mean it is not about money or the impression you make on others or the amount of cash you are able to throw in a wedding but about the event itself...
I think most of them completely miss the point of a wedding. Personally (and some of you are going to say that this is because I am a guy laughing.gif ) but I could care less if my fiancee and I where getting married at home and serving some good homemade food to our few but true friends and family ... lol : My point is that as long as we are all happy and having fun, that is what matters and I will still remember that day until I die, NOT because of some superficial reasons, but just because I am marrying the most beautiful woman in every ways biggrin.gif

pssssshhhh .. I am sorry to say this thetreble, but "SUPERFICIAL at the highest level" are the words I would use for people like that .. but to each and everyone its own. God I feel sorry for you to be stuck in a situation like that ... And sorry again for what I am about to say, I mean, no offense, but I would just tell them to F%$#k off !!! lol

My fiancee came to Canada to visit me for 2 weeks. After 2 beautiful weeks and so much happiness being together again, today was the day she had to leave to go back home in USA. I drove her back to the airport, we checked in, then we kissed and hugged for about 15 minutes trying to comfort each other and trying not to cry, said goodbye and I came back home, I can still smell her perfume in my apartment, I miss her so much already, god it hurts being apart from my baby crying.gif, god I love her so much smile.gif rose.gif heart.gif

That is just so plain wrong !
Personally, if they continue excluding your mom, I would just not attend at all and spend Christmas with your mother and your fiance.
They are really starting in a bad way and their behavior is inexcusable.

Stick with people that makes sense and leave aside the ones you do not like, even if they are your in law family, you do not have to force yourself accepting such rude behavior.

The back story - a friend of mine at work was listening to one of the hair band stations on XM and was wondering who sang this particular song. I knew it but couldn't think of who it was, so we Googled it. It was a band in the 80's called Giuffria who I vaguely remembered. When we saw the pic, we immediatley busted about laughing. Were they stuffing their jeans with socks?? #######?? The one guy even appears to have... um... trying to figure out how to say this nicely... a bit of ball separation. I am curious...
Do we need to declare our canadian income to the US govt even if these income where prior to moving to the US, and also the fact we still do not have a job in the US and did not have any income after moving to the US ?
ozone_1974MaleCanada2010-04-01 22:27:00
Canadaoh oh

I thought I got papers today from CRA to file canadian leaving canada taxes but nope.. I get a bill for 62$ of GST that I supposedly " cashed and put in my bank account " Which I find funny cus I NEVER cashed it and I dont have a canadian Bank account. The Gov GST check is still in its envelope unopend and is being sent to them today by my mom back in canada. Starting to really get on my nerves.

I know exactly what you are saying Inky, I too received checks in the mail for a few (even though I told them I moved to USA) .. had to send them back each time. I hope they find out their mistake and correct it for you .. lots of frustrating times this year with taxes

So I received my taxes reports from my accountant in Canada this year. Basically he claimed my wife on it as I got married in 2009 and I receive taxes this year from Federal and provincial (which I was extremely surprised and was even wondering if it was right since I only worked 8 months in Canada in 2009). Any people receiving back taxes from the Gvt in Canada for 2009 taxes ? I mean is it normal, lol ?

Also I know I am not entitled to the GST returns they kept sending in the mail and I have to send them back, but am I entitled to have a tax return from Canada if I am not even allowed to get GST ?

Thanks so much Kathryn & one_day_at_a_time :)

Since we filed jointly this year, (my first year in U.S.A), will I be able to use the Foreign Tax Credit (is it form 1116 or 2555  ) ?

Also another question .. with the form 1040x (amended tax return), would we be able to switch from filing jointly to filing separately ? And what is best, filing jointly or separately ?

Thanks a lot Inky, we'll try HR Block also and see if they can do the 1040x :)

Just seems weird to me to pay taxes in both countries .. but I guess it is what it is

I'll keep this post updated with the problem's solution, maybe it can help someone else in the future :)

Canadaoh oh
ok I am afraid I am in the same boat as Laura and Nick  The only difference is that it happened for the 2009 taxes. We filed jointly and we did not declare my Canadian income for 2009 by pure mistake, we really did not know about it :bonk:

So we have to file form 1040x .. We took a look at it and some of the terms they use for US taxes are not exactly the same as the ones on my T4 from Canada, (plus I have a T4 and RL-1, what is the difference ?) .. I really never did my own taxes and always had my accountant doing it for me, so I am completely confused. So how do we go about filing it ?

Second question .. are we actually going to pay taxes here in the States for the money I made in Canada (which is not a lot since I only worked a part of the year) ? It just seems like a nonsense to me when I do not even know yet if I will owe to Canada for 2009 taxes.

Thanks for any help :)

Driver's licence is expired.
They ask for it at the bank.

And seriously? I can't get my driver's license until AFTER I get my greencard now?!
How the heck am I supposed to get onto my husband's account with out it? I'm going to lack evidence majorly if I can't get on :crying:
My I-94 expired on the 22nd of February

Guess I better go cancel that appointment then :/

I got my driver's license before receiving my green card .. they accepted my work authorisation (which is valid for a year) until I get my green card and gave me a temporary driver's license expiring the date my work authorisation expires.

Maybe they would accept it for you also if you have a work authorisation yet.

The contents of this I-485 package include:

- Form I-485 Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status

- Copy of NOA2 "Approval" for I-129F
- Copy of the non US Citizen valid I-94 front and back
- Copy of the intending immigrant's birth certificate along with English translation.
- Copy of Marriage Certificate
- G-325A from 4 copies
- 2 passport style photos (non USC)
- Vaccination Documentation Worksheet

- Form W2 – Wage and Tax Statement 2008 of the sponsor;
- 6 most recent pay stubs;
- US Tax Return form for 2008

- Form I-131 Supplement Part 7
- Copy of the non US Citizen Passport
- 2 passport style photos of (non USC)

so 1st question (just to double check) .. do we have everything in our package or are we missing something ? (we have been through the check list 3 or 4 times already)

2nd question : for the I864, do we have to include the last 3 tax returns years or is the most recent year enough ?

And finally but not last .. Where do we send this package ? on the documentation. we have different addresses .. would it be the Chicago address or the Texas address ?

Thanks for your help smile.gif

CanadaAOS'rs...
Hi everyone, we are finally married kicking.gif

So after getting married, applying for SSN, importing the car etc, we are now filing for AOS and need a lil bit of help, there are some "unclear" questions (or maybe it is just unclear to us .. lol) whistling.gif

1: So on form G-325a, there is the following question
- "This form is submitted in connection with an application for:", (and we have the following choices) : Naturalization, Status as permanent Resident, Other (specify) -> 129f petition .. we are not too sure which one to pick
- Also, who should be filing out this form ? The US citizen or the Canadian citizen ?

2: on form I-485
- They are asking for the "A#" .. Is it the one at the back of the I94 in my passport ?
- They also ask for the non immigrant visa number .. which number is it on the visa ?

3: on form I-864
- At question 21, there seem to be a conflict in what they are asking .. they ask for our household size, and specify (do not count anyone twice) .. So if we enter 1 for "Persons you are sponsering in this affidavit", then 1 for "yourself", then 1 for "if you are currently married, enter 1 for your spouse" .. That makes 3 in total but we are only 2 .. so how should we go about filing this one ?

Thanks very much in advance for your help everyone smile.gif

Canada2010 Tax thread - For Canada and the U.S.
I am also extremely confused with taxes this year .. usualy in Canada (since I hate everything related to taxes, well except when I have a return .. lol) I just handed my taxes to my accountant and that was it

So this year, My accountant from Canada will do my Canadian taxes.

Now for the U.S taxes, how does it work ? if my wife file taxes jointly and include me on her taxes, do I still have to file taxes myself for the U.S ? do we have to use form 1116 ?
Also, back in 2009, was I non resident alien or resident alien ?????????????

I just do not know where to begin

CanadaWhere to translate birth certificate

Is it necessary to notorize the translated birth certificates? I got a translated birth certificate with the translator's seal and statement of accuracy at the bottom of the translated document. Does anyone know if Vancouver would require this document to be notorized as well?

I do not think they require the documents to be notarized .. I think they would be fine with only the translator's certification but I had it notarized just in case, at the time I thought it could not hurt to have it done anyway .. lol

This is what USCIS say about translated documents:

Please submit certified translations for all foreign language documents. The translator must certify that s/he is competent to translate and that the translation is accurate.
The certification format should include the certifier's name, signature, address, and date of certification.

CanadaWhere to translate birth certificate

Well, I found that the Centre for Education & Training in Mississauga does do certified translations, but they aren't notarized. She said that translations come with an affidavit, however. I know they're not interchangeable but I wonder if the embassy will get picky over it? Sigh... :S

I had it done in person .. one could try to email the documents but I always prefer to have a person to person contact when it comes to important documents.
She does not notarized the documents, she will certify them to be valid and accurately translated. I had mine translated and certified by the OTTIAQ translator and then notarized by a notary from Montreal.

For those who want to search for a certified translator, this will make your life easier :)
Note : when you search, make sure to check the "translation of official documents" box.

CanadaWhere to translate birth certificate
I had to have some of my documents translated from French to English as well back in 2008/2009 and used a certified translator from Montreal. She is a member of the OTTIAQ "Ordre des traducteurs, terminologues et interprètes agréés du Québec" and I must admit she did an outstanding job. She is an American living in Montreal and does this from her apartment (right next to the Olympic stadium) .. very fast, not too expensive and never had a problem with any of the documents she translated !
She gives you as many copies as you asks for and certify each translated documents with a permanent OTTIAQ seal.

I do not know if we are allowed to post direct references in the forums but if we are then I will post her name here for anyone interested :)
