You might wish to post some sort of an invitation in the "Moving Here and Your New Life in America' forum as well, and extend the invitation out to other VJ members than just K-1s. We've done a number of 'meet ups' here in the Atlanta area and I know there have been others who have had get to gethers as well. The nice thing about having members who are in different parts of the immigration journey is that you get to share experiences and pick their brains as well. I have friends here now who I have met through VJ, pretty well all of whom came here on K-1s, from a variety of countries (along with the Canadian contingent :D ).

The easiest thing to do is to just choose a date about 4 to 6 weeks in advance, choose a venue (a restaurant where you can sit and chat is a good idea), then post a general invitation in the forums, and if you wish you can identify some other members who are in your area (go to the Members link on the toolbar, click on Advance Search, then type in your city where it asks and it will bring back a list of members who list that city in their profile) and send them personal invitations by PMs. I made up a sign that said Visa Journey and brought it with us at our gatherings so people were able to identify our group.

Good luck with this, and have fun.:)

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsPOE Atlanta, GA any recent K-1s?

You will also need to consider how many international flights are arriving in at the same time.  If there are several flights deplaning more or less at the same time there will be a longer wait than if his flight has customs and immigration to itself.  I have picked up friends who have breezed through customs/immigration and others who have had to wait more than an hour to get through customs/immigration just due to the volume of arrivals waiting to be processed.

The new international terminal is certainly a lot easier to get around than the domestic terminal so if your friend is going to drive to pick your fiance up he should have a relatively straight forward experience.  I don't blame you for not wanting to drive through Atlanta though - I don't enjoy it either.  With a 4 pm arrival time you should be able to get to the airport prior to the big 'rush hour' traffic build up and by the time your fiance processes through immigration and you get on the road you will probably be alright for heading north without too much rush hour traffic, although you might want to have dinner before you leave to ensure the traffic has passed.

While this process is extremely frustrating, no one has a right to take their frustrations out on another member.  USCIS is the one in control of the speed of this process and while the process is definitely unfair, attacking or insulting other members won't make your own process go any faster nor make you feel any better about it.  For better or worse, it is what it is, so please don't make it harder on yourselves or anyone else by posting inappropriate comments and belittling their personal journeys.

I am going to step in and state that many of the posts and comments I have just read here ridiculing those individuals who are posting in the November K-1 thread border on personal attacks and baiting. While not directly TOS violations they are very much contrary to the spirit of Visa Journey - to offer a supportive, informative forum in which to share personal experiences and support each other through our immigration journeys for all users, not just a select few. Making fun of others and gloating because you aren't so stressed out from waiting as theys are in no way makes you 'better' than them. Some of the comments I have read here are akin to grinding salt into open wounds.

So, instead of comparing yourselves to others and patting yourselves on the back about how much better you are than they, why not practice a bit of compassion? This is a long journey - you are at the beginning of it - but this is the part that will feel the longest no matter how long your eventual journey becomes. If you cannot say something supportive and positive about others who are waiting for their approvals, then just don't say anything at all.

You never really build yourself up when you do it at the expense of other people.

My fiance interview was today at the casablanca embassy. He recieved a form saying that 221g saying that it was returned to homeland sercuity for futher review. Can anyone tell me what to expext from this letter. I called USCIS and they said that it could have been approved or it could be asking for additional information. Please im going out of my mind can someone help me.

Incidentally, I think you are in the wrong forum and are looking for the K-1 forum. Could it be possible that this relates to IMBRA? It may be that they will require further security checks and that is why the application has been returned. I hope you hear something soon so you can stop worrying.

Middle East and North AfricaEvacuees arriving in Atlanta
I thought you might be interested in this story in today's Atlanta Journal Constitution .

"Delta flies Lebanon evacuees from Cyprus to Atlanta

By JEFFRY SCOTT
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 07/24/06

They arrived to cheers from Delta Air Lines volunteers at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in the wee hours Sunday, weary after a 13-hour flight delivered them from escalating violence in Lebanon.

About 160 people came home Sunday on a flight from Cyprus, part of larger group of about 2,000 Americans the U.S. military evacuated from Lebanon a day earlier.

After arriving, Fred Belman, 37, thrust his fist into the air just after midnight as a row of TV cameras recorded the scene.

"I want to thank Delta Air Lines for helping us get out," he said. "Without them, we'd still be stuck."

Others had trouble shaking the trauma of the last 12 days. Southern Lebanon has been devastated by airstrikes in the fighting between Israel and the militant group Hezbollah.

"It was terrible, it was terrible," said Nihal Wehbi, 47. "You could hear the bombs coming ... and then you waited to see what happened next, and then there was the explosion. You never knew where they would hit or how close. I had a nightmare about it on the airplane."

Wehbi and a dozen relatives had planned a six-week vacation in Lebanon. When the conflict began, they sought desperately to leave.

Delta flew the group for free from Cyprus, an island nation in the Mediterranean Sea, to Atlanta, said spokeswoman Gina Laughlin. In addition, the airline offered a 50 percent discount to people making connections, such as Wehbi, who lives in Los Angeles. She planned to get some sleep before flying home.

Delta arranged two nights of free lodging at the InterContinental Hotel in Buckhead for the travelers whose schedules had been upended by the fighting.

Belman and his family — wife, Eaman, 34, and sons Omar, 13, and Dena, 8 — have lived in Lebanon for three years. After fighting broke out and Beirut was targeted, they decided to stay with friends in Atlanta while trying to figure out their next step.

"We had to get out of Beirut," Belman said. "It was not safe anymore."

The Belmans were among nearly 2,000 people evacuated Saturday from Lebanon aboard the USS Trenton. In all, about 10,000 Americans have been evacuated. U.S. Consul William Gill said Sunday that U.S. evacuation efforts were nearly complete.

The trip from Lebanon to Cyprus took about 15 hours. Anthony Ghandour, 40, arrived in Cyprus aboard the USS Nashville three days ago with two sisters, a niece and a cousin. The ship was so crowded with evacuees that Ghandour and his family slept on the deck.

In Lebanon, Ghandour said, he and his family could see smoke from the burning airport in Beirut, and he worried about his mother and father who live there and stayed behind. "My heart goes out to them."

On Sunday, Ghandour wore a gray T-shirt emblazoned with the name of the Nashville, the ship that took him to safety.

"It's the best feeling in the world to be back," Ghandour said. "Hats off to the U.S. Marines and the Navy personnel. They were great."

Middle East and North AfricaMonday

It is not a boring Monday for me. My cat was diagnosed with diabetes officially on Friday and I have to go get the insulin and bring him to the vet office so they can show me how to give him a shot.

What we do because we love our furry friends! :luv:

Twila

P.S. I really need to think about home monitoring him. Can you imagine pricking a cat's ear to get a little blood? I think just giving the shots will be challenge with this cat. Some fun days coming...I am sure!

Aww, you have my sympathies. I had a cat who was diabetic and on insulin too. Unfortunately, it was when they weren't into doing home blood glucose tests so I had to keep trying to test his urine. It is not a good compromise in getting the dosage right. You will find the shots are super easy though. Get the 'short' insulin syringes, 31 guage which are ultra fine. (I recommend BD ultra-fine II 3/10cc size). The injection goes in the loose skin just in front of the shoulder blades at the back of the neck and just goes under the skin. They are virtually painless. I can't say about the ear pricks though. Good luck to you and your kitty.

Middle East and North Africasome one is lying
Yes, I said it was for people who are applying for Canadian visas, however the address given is the same address for any fingerprint security reports - for whatever reason. The individual in question has never been to Canada, yet the CASA officials still want him to provide proof that he has no criminal record in Canada. Since he can't get the consular authorities to assist, I suggest doing an end run around the consular authorities and getting the fingerprints along with the supporting documentation (ie. email requesting report) and submitting them directly to the RCMP Identification unit. Since they won't return results to the applicant, they can send them to the appropriate government authority requesting the information. It is worth a try. The only information I don't see here is what the fee for this service is - and I know there is a fee.
Kathryn41FemaleCanada2006-08-12 21:53:00
Middle East and North Africasome one is lying
Karen,

Any chance that your fiance still has something that says the visa to Canada was denied? Would the Consulate at least put that in writing, that your fiance applied, was denied and has never been in Canada? It does seem like a catch-22, doesn't it. I hope someone starts being realistic for you very soon.

ok, here is information that is posted about gaining fingerprint checks from Canadian authorities with the Canadian Embassy in Washington nfor those who are requiring fingerprint checks for Canadian immigration purposes: the website is www.canadianembassy.org. You may be able to obtain fingerprints on your own, send them along with the emails you have from CASA, include any file number you have, and ask them to forward the information directly to CASA. I don't know if it will work, but it may be a way around the stalemate. Good luck.

HOW TO OBTAIN A POLICE CERTIFICATE FROM CANADIAN AUTHORITIES

Applicants requiring Police Certificates who are currently present in Canada or who have resided in Canada for any period of time, MUST obtain a police clearance from the ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE (RCMP). Please note that Canadian Visa Offices will NOT accept Police Certificates from Canada where a name check has been conducted. The RCMP record check that is required must be based on a FINGERPRINT CHECK.

STEP ONE - HAVE FINGERPRINTS TAKEN BY A RECOGNIZED AGENCY:

* Recognized agencies include a LOCAL RCMP DETACHMENT or a LOCAL POLICE SERVICE.
* A fee will usually be charged for fingerprinting. Fees vary according to the location where the applicant is fingerprinted.
* Applicants appearing for fingerprinting will need to bring PHOTO IDENTIFICATION, such as a passport, and a LETTER FROM THE CANADIAN VISA OFFICE which requests an RCMP fingerprint-based criminal record check. Applicants may also wish to contact the RCMP for any additional instructions.

**IMPORTANT: The applicant's IMMIGRATION FILE NUMBER from the Canadian Visa Office that is processing his/her application MUST appear on the applicant's fingerprint form. This will ensure that the results of the applicant's fingerprint check are matched to his/her Canadian immigration file.

STEP TWO - FORWARD FINGERPRINTS TO THE RCMP FOR ASSESSMENT:

Royal Canadian Mounted Police,
NCO IC Civil Section,
Identification Services,
1200 Vanier Parkway,
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, K1A 0R2.

**NOTE: The RCMP will send the results of the applicant's criminal record check DIRECTLY TO THE CANADIAN VISA OFFICE. They will not return fingerprints to the applicant. The normal processing time for a criminal record check is 60 days.

I did not send the supplement with the AOS but I did include my copy of the vaccination worksheet - the original of which was supposed to be included in with the medical. All of my shots were complete and up to date. I explained that in the covering letter. I did not get an RFE. I received my AOS without an interview so never presented the supplement that I had done with the local civil surgeon and intended to bring to the interview. If your husband's vaccinations are all up to date , especially if he got them done at the actual medical, I would include that information in a covering letter and see if that is acceptable. If you get an RFE, well then you will have to obtain the supplement. Good luck.

I am not MENA so I hope no one minds me adding a comment . . . like the above poster I think it is important to remember that people do change and grow - and mature. Something that they thought was important at first they may discover is not so important after all, and something they had not considered becomes very important. Life is about learning and growing, and as a couple we both learn and grow together. None of us are perfect and we can show some bad judgments along the way. If, however, on that journey, we learn to see that our previous choices were flawed and try to do better this time, I think it is important that we are given that opportunity by those we love and who love us. So, he thought it was important to come to the US and lied about loving you in order to do so; then - unexpectedly - he found out that he loved you after all, that you are very important to him - not because you are a US citizen, but because you are you. Judge the situation from where you are now, and trust in the process that ensures we learn from our experiences. Your disappointment at his dishonesty will help him to realize the problems associated with his lying - especially now that you are so important to him - and perhaps you will find that you have made an honest man out of him. smile.gif

We married for love.

Would I marry him if I knew then what I know now? Yes, although I might have pushed harder to live in Canada than move to the US. It was the practical answer, however. Like Jen, though, if we were both citizens of the same country we would probably just be living together instead of married - nothing against marriage, just the way we are. If I had to marry anyone though, I am glad it is him and would do it all over again.

It was nice to read a post started by an MENA man expressing his love for his American wife and encouraging others to follow suit. I am not MENA nor a man but read this forum every now and again as I do find it fascinating to try and appreciate the cultural differences individuals from MENA countries face coming to the US, and seeing how they and their spouses deal with these challenges. So, thank you HAYATI for giving a voice to the other half of the equation. It was nice to read.

Cutest kitty video ever!

Happy Caturday Everyone. Today I do volunteer work for "Saturday of Service". I don't know what our assignment is yet but I think we may be doing some outside work and the weather is supposed to be nice up to 70 degrees.

Very cute kitten - looks like a Scottish Fold - but someone is doing an excellent job of training that kitten to attack hands - and while it might be cute now, it won't be nearly so cute in another few weeks - but the training will have taken by then. They should be substituting a small stuffed toy for the kitten to attack rather than teasing it with their hand like that. The worst part of it is that when the kitten is older and attacks their hands, they will blame the kitten rather than recognize the fact that they 'trained' the kitten to do so.

Middle East and North AfricaMENA Old Wives tales
This isn't MENA but someone was asking about bringing in 'good luck' and I thought I would share some of my Scottish ancestry here in time for the New Year. We always practiced the tradition of the First Footer - which means that the first person to enter the house in the New Year needs to be a dark haired man carrying bread and money. So, my Dad who was the only dark haired man in a family of blondes was always kicked out of the house (VBG) a few minutes before midnight and then allowed back in after the New Year. This was to ensure that the Devil didn't come in first (dark haired men are under the Devil's radar, apparently) and the bread and coin meant that the household would enjoy enough food and prosperity during the coming year. We also brought bread and a coin with us wherever we visited on New Year's to bring them the gift of enough food and prosoperity through the coming year, too:-). Not really, an old wive's tale, but a cultural tradition:-).

I hope you don't mind me sharing this - I have thoroughly enjoyed this thread. I am fascinated by the various beliefs and old wives' tales many of us bring with us from our different cultures:-).

Middle East and North AfricaHas anyone ever been late filing the papers???
There are a number of people who have filed for their green card after the 90 day period. The important part was to be married within the 90 days designated by the I-94. You don't have to file for AOS within that deadline although it keeps your status valid if you do. A few days/weeks out of status while you prepare the AOS is not going to cause you problems with the AOS. File as soon as you can; you should be fine.

Middle East and North AfricaStopped cooking for my husband!
Your solution to the food budget situation reminded me of how my cousin handled her husband's apparent inability to put his dirty clothes in the clothes hamper. She would spend time every day following around after him picking up his discarded socks and shirts and clothing from wherever he left them on the bedroom floor and where he kicked them under the bed, and put them in the hamper. He always had freshly laundered clothes for work. She, however, also worked full time and still did the majority of the domestic chores. She finally got really peeved at his continual promises to put his dirty clothes in the hamper and then failing to do so. She stopped picking up his clothes. Any laundry that was in the hamper got washed. Anything that wasn't in the hamper didn't get washed. When he couldn't find a clean shirt he asked her why she didn't do the laundry. She replied that she did - she washed everything in the dirty clothes hamper. It took about a week off him not having clean clothes to wear to work before he finally 'got it'. Problem solved. Husband trained. Dirty clothes are always in the hamper now. (And yes, his mother always picked up after him!)
