I'm getting very frustrated. Elise and I seem to be left behind. We received our NOA on the 16th (it was dated the 13th). Our last touch was February 21st and still no NOA2. And this is via VT! At least I was lucky enough to visit her (I just got back).

If I don't hear anything soon I may reach out to my congressman (though I don't want to "cry wolf" too quickly).

I'd be happy if the petition has been looked at. I'd understand if there was an RFE. But it's the lack of any action that is getting to me. From what I can there are over 5 petitions sent after (some well after) Elise and mine that have been processed in a more timely fashion.

And - I'd be a lot more patient if Elise and I weren't expecting (unexpectedly, but happily) a child. We'd like to be together during this time and we'd like consistency in her pre-natal care.

Didn't think I would be seeing any refund lol...... Not surprised either that there is no structure to who and who does not get their finger prints taken again

More than anything I was curious as to whether it would speed the process up or not.


I don't think Biometrics has that much to do with how long the process takes - the main difference is your local field office, luck, and the the specifics of your case (probably in that order). You can look at the Immigration Timelines (top menu) to get a sense of how long your local field office typically takes. For for a general idea search VJ for "N-400 Filers 2012" to read the threads of others who are currently waiting.

I have just completed the ROC process and will be filing my N400 next month (Married 3 years minus 90 days).

I had my Biometrics taken in July 2011 as part of my I751 process and I am curious if I will have them requested again. As I say I am filing my N400 next month (March) and I hear that they do not take your Biometrics again if they have done so within the last 12 months, Is this true ?

If you had biometrics taken within the past 15 months you may not need to have them taken again. There are some people who still get bio appointments while others in exactly the same situation do not. Either way you have to pay for biometrics when you apply and you won't see the money again in either case.

hi! I'm applying for citizenship and I'd lived outside U.S. for more than 6 months (less than a year). Do I need to write down the address of abroad in form N400 where they asked to write down the address where you lived since last five years? My trip was just a visit but because it was longer than 6 months does it require to mention that address where i stayed (outside U.S.)? pls. help......thnx


Have you confirmed that you meet the requirements? They can be found here

5 years as a Permanent Resident without leaving the United States for trips of 6 months or longer.

No, I don't believe so. It just updates something in their system and they send you a new card.

I would love for a thorough explanation of what actually changes...anyone know?


The SSN is the same, just the issue date changes. I hope these don't count as replacements, otherwise I am on card number 4 of the 10 per lifetime limit:

1. Name spelled wrong - changed immediately
2. Name correct, I was not a PR so it was stamped "Work only with DHS approval"
3. Became PR and had "DHS Approval" stamp removed.
4. Citizen

Here is the reason for updating SSA from NewCitizen

  • The social security database will be updated showing you as a US citizen. This database is shared with all federal agencies and many state agencies further validating your US citizenship status with the federal and state governments.
  • With your social security records updated showing you as a US citizen, it will be much easier in the future to apply for and receive all social security benefits entitled to you.
  • If you ever have to replace your social security card, obtaining a new card will be easier now that you are a US citizen.
  • Lastly, in some states, certain disability benefits are only available to US citizens. By changing your citizenship status with the Social Security Administration, you will ensure you receive all disability, retirement, and social security benefits for which you qualify as a US citizen.

I was just thinking that we haven't gotten around to updating SSA :bonk: We need to get on that. Thanks for the reminder.


I updated SSA last week and at the end they told me my new card was in the post.

I got the new card and it is identical to my previous one. Seems like a waste of money since all I wanted them to do was update their records but I suppose I have given DHS more than enough money throughout this process to cover it.

I am looking forward to the last few December 2011 filers making it over the finish line!

So I received my appointment letter today, While I was reading the letter it says that the proceeding will take about TWO HOURS!!! WHY? I have read here ppl experiences that it only took 15 or 20 minutes? is the whole process TWO hours?


Mine took 3.5 hours which consisted of 3 hours of waiting and half an hour of being interviewed and getting an interview letter. To be fair, after the interview in Hartford they review the case which takes an additional hour but allows them to schedule your oath interview so that you leave with an oath appointment letter. I don't know what the process is at NYC because every office is different.

I guess that means they still want me to give them the arrest records while, in fact, I am not able to produce that document... in other words: I'm screwed for something that I didn't even know at the time that I was doing.... sigh :(

Well our experience in Hartford was certainly not pleasant today. My husband was called in after the 1.5 hour wait. We'd noticed that all of the USCIS folks who were calling people back there appeared to be one person who was in a really bad mood. And guess who it was who called my husband back for the interview? No smile or handshake to welcome him like all the others were doing with interviewees. She just pointed him back to room for the interview. Apparently from the swearing in to the end of the interview she was cold. And then afterward she tried to give me attitude when I inquired about document he was given. Her bitterness was palpable. Moving forward...

He passed the Civics and English tests without any problem. All of the personal information questions about us were fine as well. But the officer then began asking him specific dates of our trips to Ecuador (none of which were for more than a couple of weeks, nothing anywhere close to the max limit outside the US). She asked for the specific dates that he and I went together and for those trips that he traveled alone. Unfortunately my husband is terrible at remembering dates and we'd not practiced this when preparing for the exam. So he said that he couldn't remember exactly. She asked for the exact amount of time we'd lived at our previous address and for the address and phone number we used there (this was four years ago!). He said to me afterward that he was nervous and all of that info had completely slipped his mind. We had all of the evidence that we were requested to bring in the interview letter.

She gave him a form saying that she'd mail us an N-14 form. I assume that the form will request evidence of our having filed taxes for 2011. Even though that was not a requested doc in our interview letter, she requested to see that and we hadn't taken a copy of the submitted tax docs with us this morning. I'm wondering what else might be requested...

Sorry it didn't go well - please let us know what the RFE is for. It is probably just taxes as you said.
I was not planning to take my 2011 tax return since my interview was before the tax deadline but I decided to anyway. It was fortunate that I did as the officer asked for it and took a copy of it along with a copy of my bank statement showing my tax refund for 2011-12. You can walk into the IRS office in Norwalk and have tax transcripts printed free for any year. I did this for 2008,2009,2010 and all of them were requested and kept at my interview.
I printed my application and read through it a few times just before my interview in case I was asked any questions about it. The only question was have you been out of the country since you submitted your application which I had not.

I am super confused now, I was waiting inline to be scheduled for an interview since a month and a half, today I get a status update saying : On April 13, 2012, we mailed you an appointment notice to have your fingerprints taken. Please follow the instructions on the notice.

I thought I didnt require fingerprinting because I was already placed inline for interview scheduling.

any ideas guys what exactly is happening?


I thought that I avoided it too but I got my bio letter after my interview letter. Bio's last 15 months so it must have expired due to how long the interview is taking. They may hold up your interview so I would attempt to do a walk-in bio as soon as you get the letter if possible. I went the day after I received the letter and had it done immediately.

I read somewhere that CT has several different cities for the oath (on a rotation), but that they all take place on Fridays. I assume most folks want to do the swearing-in as quickly as possible, but I foresee that we wouldn't be able to miss work on a Friday for a few weeks post-interview. Does Hartford let you choose (ask to postpone the oath) or do they just tell you when to show up, no choice in the matter?


They tell you when and where but I think you can say that it is not convenient and ask for a different date / location. I don't know if they have requirements of imminent travel etc. or they just let you choose. You would need to speak to the person who you initially hand you appointment letter to - she would be the one who gives you the date/location if you are approved.

Hello everyone -

My wife and I had our interviews today in Hartford, CT. We were there about 3 hours total including wait time, interview and some more waiting after that.

Interview went well. I did go "over prepared" and took copies of ids, utility bills, 5 years of tax returns, 5 years of W-2s, Marriage certificate, etc.
Our case is based on the 5 year rule so I really did not expect to get asked for any documents. It turns out I was asked for my tax returns, my W-2s and my marriage certificate. Fortunately I had all those documents with me. Obvious suggestion, go well prepared, you never know.

In the end, it all worked out. After our interviews we were asked to wait for our oath letters. After about 45 mins we got our oath letters and will be attending the ceremony on April 20th. Really nice to be able to walk out of there with the oath letter.

Hartford was okay, I think that they schedule about 5 people every hour (at the same time!) so getting there early helps. I had to wait 1.5 hours before I was called for interview. I parked behind the building on the 8 hour meter but you can only add 2 hours at a time so I had to keep running out to add more money. I was lucky not to get a ticket since I was being interviewed one time it ran out! Daily parking is $8 or $10 nearby. I used the meter and it cost $3.50 for 3.5 hours total.

After the interview if all goes well, you wait to be called to schedule an oath ceremony which took another hour but was better than waiting for a letter to arrive in the mail!

The interviewer was very friendly and asked for tax returns, proof that I paid my 2009 tax bill, proof of alimony payments and details of a court case from when I was 12 which I can hopefully now put behind me!! I took tax transcripts (from the IRS in Norwalk), copys of tax returns, printouts of most recent bank statements and a court transcript from the UK which covered everything fortunately.

Reading test was "Who lives in the White House" and writing test was "The President lives in the White House"

Questions were :

What is one promise you make when becoming a USC
Who was the first President
Who is the Governor of CT
Where is the Statue of Liberty
What movement tried to end racial discrimination
Name 2 national US holidays
