I am craving CARAMBARS! Any chance I can find that somewhere in the USA?
I found a few websites where they sell some but with the shipping costs, it would probably cost less if my parents bought some for me and sent them here. Although I am not sure how much it would cost to them.

I've been kinda afraid that I'm missing something important because every thing has been in french for awhile. I've been asking my fiance to read it and let me know if we're missing something important. Anyhoos, can't help but I'm glad to be finally understanding something

J'avais ete au Studio Photo Jourdain a Paris car ils faisaient 6 photos pour 16 euros il me semble, alors que les autres c'etait du style 2 photos pour 12 euros. Le quartier etait un peu moyen, mais au moins j'avais plein de photos

Mais tu as deja du faire ces photos, non ? Il fallait en fournir une avec la petition pour le K1.

Pour Chicago ils ne le demandent pas. Ils demandent :
- copie du passeport
- copie de la carte d'identite
- copie du livret de famille
- justificatif de domicile (driver's license ou facture)
- photo d'identte
- enveloppe timbree
Le seul truc qui me pose probleme c'est la copie du livret de famille, mais si j'envoie la demande d'inscription consulaire en meme temps que la demande de transcription du mariage, peut-etre qu'ils vont tout faire d'un coup et photocopier le livret de famille eux-memes ? Ou alors vous pensez vraiment qu'il faut que j'attende ?

I have a really small question... I am filling out the form for the "demande de transcription du mariage" and basically it says:

My question is for the "avec". Are they asking the name of my husband? I'm pretty sure that's the case but I want to make sure.

I wouldn't have had any problems if the "avec" was before the "celebre a". The fact that it is after makes me wonder if maybe they are asking for the name of the person who married us. I don't know why, but I find it confusing to see the "avec" at the end. It would have made more sense to ask for the husband's name before.
Oh well. Please let me know so I can send all this soon!

Here is our story, I hope it will help you.
I met my now husband three years ago, while I was a student in the USA (J1 visa, I was there for 4 months). We spent a month and a half together, until I had to go back to France. We started thinking of how we could be together. I was still in college at that time and had to do an internship the next year. I tried to find an internship in the USA, but after 3 months of nothing but negative answers because it would mean too much paperwork for the companies, I forgot the idea and did my internship in France. Then I spent a month (my only vacation time) in the US with him, right after my internship. I then came back to France for my last year at the university, did a new internship, was hired by the company and started working for them (still in France). My boyfriend came for a month and a half in France, he had to quit his job in order to do that. I tried to find a VIE (volontariat international en entreprise), I found one on the other side of the USA, but while trying to make a decision, we realized that after that VIE, we would still be at the same point: trying to figure out how to be together. So I said No to the company, and we decided to apply for a K1 visa to get married.

So, in short:
- met in 2005, spent a month and a half together
- 7 months apart
- 1 month together in 2006
- 13 months apart
- 1 month and a half together in 2007
- 8 months apart (waiting for k1 visa)
- and now together forever

it wasn't always easy to be apart, we even broke up in 2007 for a few months, but then realized that we really wanted to be together. I don't have any advices to give you, it depends on the individual. everybody deals with emotions differently.

Basically, before the marriage, you have to do something called the "publication des bans". All the French couples have to do it before they get married, and now when a French person gets married abroad, they also have to do it.
Then, once you are married, you ask the consulate to "transcript" the marriage, so it is recognized by the French authorities too.
I have no clue if there are any benefits, I'm doing it just because it is the way it is supposed to be, and since I'm French I'd rather make sure that I'm married by the French laws too

Some people have skipped the "publication des bans" and did the transcription without any problems.

The best thing to do is to find out which consulate you are dependant of and then read what they say on the "marriage" section of their website.

For the birth certificate, it's the date of the copy, it's a certified copy, with a raised seal, not an original. However, I sent in one that was a year old, and had no problems. The marriage certificate must have the apostille. In order to get it, you need to send your certified copy of the marriage certificate to the secretary of State who in exchange of a small fee ($10 or less, depends on your state) will attach an apostille to it. Without it, the French Consulate will reject your application.
Just a little FYI, your birth certificate cannot be older than 3 months and your US spouse's one cannot be older than 6 months.

You did the "publication des bans" right?
I am not sure if birth certificates are needed if you did things the right way.

yes we did the "publication des bans". I don't see how the birth certificate of my husband cannot be older than six months since they only get one. I mean, it's not like in France. What we get in France is a copy of our BC. Here they don't give a copy but an original. I had sent a photocopy of it for the publication des bans (along with mine, that was less than 3 months old - or 6 - can't remember). Maybe I'll send them an email to ask if we need to send BC again.
So since it needs the apostille I will really need to request another certified copy just for the French paperwork then.

Oh and we are dependant of the Consulate in Chicago, not Boston.

I just realized that Bryan probably didn't change the address on the new intent of letter he sent me last week. From what the guides said, it should be addressed to the US embassy in Paris, but he probably left the address of USCIS.

Hello everyone
I have a question about the interview at the embassy. On this page http://www.visajourn...e...e&cty=Paris it still says that we need I-864, not I-134. The page has been updated recently, that's why I want to make sure we do the right things (even though we still have several months before the interview)
I know that for the K1 visa it should be I-134 and for AOS later, the I-864. Some people told me that they brought the I-134 and they were ok with it.
I know I already asked that question, but I just want to make sure... should my fiance file both just in case or only I-134 (or only I-864!)?

Here is another information from their website about when we should send them the documents for the "publication des bans":

20 jours avant la date du mariage pour les futurs époux résidant tous deux dans la circonscription du consulat général de France à Chicago,
ou
8 semaines avant la date prévue du mariage lorsqu’un (ou les) futur(s) époux ne réside(nt) pas dans cette circonscription)

So I guess if you want to send the documents from France, then it should be 8 weeks before the wedding. And that sucks.

I got an answer from the consulate in Chicago several weeks ago but forgot to post it here. Since it might be useful, here are my email and their answer:

"Bonjour,

Je suis française et réside actuellement en France. Mon fiancé est Américain, nous avons fait la demande auprès du gouvernement américain pour un visa K1, pour que je puisse revenir aux USA, m'y marier, et ensuite y résider. Nous ne pouvons pas fixer de date puisque cela dépend de quand le visa nous sera attribué, mais le mariage se ferait vraisemblablement dans le mois suivant mon arrivée sur le territoire (vers la fin de l'année).

J'ai lu les informations sur votre site pour effectuer la publication des bans afin que la mariage soit reconnu en France, mais j'ai quelques petites questions :
- d'après ce que j'ai compris, nous avons deux possibilités : soit j'attends d'arriver aux USA, puis je vous envoie la demande de publication, sachant qu'il faut que ça soit au moins deux semaines avant le mariage, ou alors, pendant que je suis en France, au moins 8 semaines avant le mariage, nous réunissons les documents nécessaires et nous vous les envoyons ? Est-ce correct ? (j'aimerais être sure que ça puisse être fait depuis la France, je suppose que tant que mon futur époux a une adresse aux USA, il ne devrait pas y avoir de problème)
- la lettre signée demandant la publication des bans doit-elle être en français, même celle du citoyen américain ?

Sinon, il n'y a que le conjoint français qui demande la publication, en joignant les documents concernant son conjoint américain.
l'acte de naissance de votre fiancé doit être un original.
Le justificatif de domicile dépend de l'endroit où vous habitez. Si vous habitez en France, il faut un justificatif de domicile français, peu importe que vous soyez momentanément aux Etats-Unis (ou pour le futur), quand vous faites la demande.
Après la demande de publication des bans, il vous restera effectivement à demander la transcription de l'acte de mariage."

Apparently my local consultate will be Chicago. I found a list of what we'll need (here):
- letter from each of us saying we want the publication des bans
- copy of my birth certificate (less than 3 months old)
- copy of my French ID
- proof of address in the US (electricity bill, ...) <- that is the one bothering me right now. we're supposed to live with some friends, in their house. I'll have to ask my fiance about that.

So this is not something I have to do while in France, but once I arrive in the USA? I thought I could do that while waiting here!

Yes that's exactly what I am thinking now. The AOS process after a J-1 seems to take very long in some cases (even without the need of a weaver for the 2 year rule)!
We have decided that we are going to start getting everything for the K-1. I still have 2 days to make a decision since I told the company that I would give them my decision Friday, but I think I already know what we are going to do

Apparently the J-1 visa I would have wouldn't be subject to the 2 year rule. But even like this, it seems that it would be a lot 'easier' to do the K-1 instead! (and we'd really like to get married too!!)
