Congrats Cecy! I'm still looking for a job right now. I've had a few interviews, some negative answers and at this point I'm still waiting. It sucks. So, good thing you found a job smile.gif

It's the same here in St. Louis, it's hard to find good seafood. We did found a store that sold fresh seafood but they didn't have a lot of choice. And it wasn't like the ones in France. The oysters were at least twice the size of the ones in France, same for the mussels, and they didn't have the same taste. I think they were less salty. It was still good to have some, but definitely not as good as in France.

Hello everybody! I just came back from a trip to New Orleans, it was really nice smile.gif It's hard to come back to St. Louis, it's called here compared to Lousiana (30F in St Louis, 65-70F in New Orleans)
Anyway, still nothing new about jobs, I had several interviews with recruiting companies (kind of like the SSII in France apparently) but most of the contracts they have, they need people with more experience than me. I've only worked a year and a half since I got my degree.

Woaw! that s great! everybody keeps telling me New Orleans is great! I hope I ll visit it someday!
You missed Mardi gras though! tongue.gif
Did you guys did anything ?

Too bad for the interviews I hope you ll find a job soon!
One year and half sounds like good experience to me! I would hire you!lol

Good Luck!

They start celebrating Mardi Gras a month before the real Mardi Gras day, so we saw a few parades, got lots of beads. We left just before it got TOO crazy... we already had enough of all the yelling in the streets and drunk people and strippers everywhere tongue.gif
Other than that we walked a lot, in the city and around, went to a nearby beach, went in the swamps, lots of nice things. And we ate a lot of seafood biggrin.gif

I don't know anything about expediting your case C&D. And about moving, I did like Lili&kai, I put all I could in two suitcases and a carry-on luggage and it worked out ok. My parents sent me the few books I left at home a month or two later. I didn't have much to bring anyway since I had known for 2 or 3 years that I would have to move eventually and before that I was a student. So no furniture, and I tried not to buy too many books and stuff like that either. I gave away all the things I didn't want to bring (plates, utensils, etc) and the rest I gave it back to my parents.
MissYoko used a moving company, I remember she said they had good prices, maybe you can try to contact her.

From what I understand, BONA FIDE residence must contain one full year, but it does not mean it must be the year for which we are filing taxes.
Lucie was a resident for 2007, during which she visited the US on a tourist visa for a long vacation. She went back to France, and continued her residency uninterupted, UNTIL she got her K1. So we can claim 60% of the year as a resident, and is exempt for ($86,000 * 60%) under the foreign income exclusion treaty. We just need to fill out form 2555ez, and our normal 1040.

QUOTE
A US resident alien who is a citizen or national of a country with which the US has an income tax treaty in effect and who is a bona fide resident of a foreign country, or countries, for an uninterrumpted period that includes an entire tax year (January 1 - December 31)

So, as Damon said, bona fide residence does not have to be the year for which we are filing taxes. Then Pam, I don't understand why you say you can't do the exemption. Doesn't that mean that everyone of us, as long as in our life we have spent an entire year in France, we are Bona Fide Resident?

Thank you for the links. I don't really understand why someone who has spent all his life in a foreign country (being a citizen of that foreign country) can not be exempt just because they were a few days short last time... That law doesn't make sense to me. But I guess no choice about that if it's the law, we can't change it.

French taxes talk... sorry it's in French, I'm having a hard time figuring out how to make some of the sentences...

From what I've seen in IT, there are a lot of companies who ask for US Citizenship, apparently business for the government is the only thing that is hiring right now. I've still found a few offers and sent my resume to several companies. Hopefully that won't take too long.

In St. Louis, the Planned Parenthood got a grant to do HPV vaccines for free last year, so I have done two shots there already (next one in three months). I didn't really want to do it because I don't like the fact that they make us do the vaccine but they don't make US citizens have it mandatory, but since I know we have to do it, I took that occasion. At least this way I got it for free!

What I did: I didn't fill it out but I think I will get a RFE (and it's strange that I haven't gotten one yet) At that time I wasn't sure what I was supposed to do so I figured I wouldn't do anything and see what they say in the RFE.

What I think we have to do: have the vaccination part of the form filled out by a civil surgeon, but only the vaccination part because K1 holders don't have to do the other ones. That's what is written in the official instructions for the I-693.

Hello again

small technical questions for you about French taxes and marriage
I don't have the answers but just want to hint on the questions

1) at some point we need to wrap up our taxes situation and clear it before leaving
anybody clear on when it is
obviously varies depending on visa K1 K3 etc...

2) when you get married in the US you may check on your "regime matrimonial" . Regime will apply either by default depending maybe of the state you are getting married, or will be established by a contract. careful about consequences for the future

3) before getting married, should you get registered at the French consulate and ask them for guidance about registering your marriage in France? I have a cousin married in las vegas and I think her country does not have the info (not sure it matters)

1) I am not completely sure so far, from what I have read, the year after you arrive in the USA you still have to pay taxes in France. If someone else could tell us exactly what we are supposed to do that would be nice!

2) Are you talking about a "prenuptial"? each state has its own 'regime matrimonial', usually it's "everything that you or your husband get while married belongs to both of you, things from before the marriage stay separate. You have to check for your state. As for doing a prenuptial contract, I read that you have to have two lawyers (one for each of you) and yours should be bilingual to insure that you are well aware of what is in the contract.

3) You can check the website of the French Consulate closer to where you will live in the USA. They usually explain how to do things. The 'normal' way to do it is to do the "publication des bans" before to get married, and then after the marriage you do the "transcription du mariage". If you skip the publication des bans, the transcription may take longer and they may ask you to come for an interview to the consulate (but I never read of anyone who had to do that here). That is what I did for the K1, things may be different for a K3.

police certificate

marriage certificate if applicable
affidavit of support

+ receipt of mandat compte 89 euros (not same amount anymore) account 2006L

And also bring everything that they sent you in packet 3 but that you haven't send back already.

The fee has to be paid at a post office, with a "mandat compte" that goes to the account of the embassy. The fee isn't 85 euros anymore, it is around 100 euros I think.
I just looked at the copy I have of the receipt I have (it was 6 months ago so it may have changed), the account number is 2006L.
As for the amount, a few weeks ago lili&kai wrote that on her packet 4 they said: "+98euros mandat cash si payé avant le 1er décember ou 107 après le 1er décembre". So it would now be 107 euros. (http://www.visajourn...h...t&p=2467733)

I hope someone who had their interview recently can confirm this or help you better, in case something has changed.

I just tried this recipe: http://sandrakavital...n-baguette.html (great blog by the way) and it was awesome!

I changed a few things because I had to dissolve the yeast in water before to incorporate it to the flour-water mixture, so I added a little more flour, and also 1 teaspoon of sugar, and it really tastes like a French baguette from the bakery at the corner of the street smile.gif
So far, that is my favorite recipe.

Coucou!
I looked at your recipe and I have few dumb questions to ask. Is the flour T65 has the same name in english? do you find this in every supermarket? Does levure sèche SAF-Instant is an american brand? can I find it easily?

I used "all-purpose flour", just the regular one in stores.
And for 'levure seche', I used Fleischmann's Active Dry Yeast. It is sold in individual envelopes, each envelope is almost the right amount asked in the recipe (7g ~ 1.5cc)

Maybe I will write down the recipe since I made a few changes.
Basically,
Mix 4 cups of flour and 1.4 cups water (they are the quantities asked in the recipe)
Then I dissolved the yeast in 1/4cup of water and added 1 teaspoon of sugar (because Bryan always tells me that the yeast only works if there's sugar in the recipe)
I mixed flour/water with the yeast mixture, but since I had added 1/4 cup of water with the yeast, I added some flour to make the quantities more proportionate. I'm not sure what quantity I added, just enough so I could make the dough in a bowl (way too sticky before). Maybe it was 1/2 cup of flour.
Then I continued the rest of the recipe as it is written.

Bryan bought me a book called French Cook Book, so the recipe is with American products and measurements tongue.gif so it is a French baguette from an American book, but it is still a good thing to start with (no need to convert any measurements, the yeast they ask for is just one package of active dry yeast that we find here, so at least I know exactly how much to put in there.
I want to modify the recipe though because "la mie" is quite dense... So when I find the perfect recipe I will share it tongue.gif
If you really want it I could scan the recipe from my book, but there are probably better recipes in the Internet.
