CanadaGuys, I need a hug
Only you can make these decisions. First of all, wait to see if you get the promotion or not. If not, then the decisions is made for you.

Otherwise, I would look at which city will give you the better quality of life......costs, amenities, schools, etc. Then seriously talk it over and see where you both stand. Then, reach an agreement.

I wish you luck in sorting it all out.

CanadaLooking for a second opinion/clarification!
You don't have to be living together in the foreign country to apply for the CR1. Marry in Canada and file.

Not sure how long the wait is on the CR1 from Canada. Depends a lot on the service center. 2 Jamaican CR1's I am familiar with filed in October 2007 and are still waiting. They are Vermont.

Both the K-1 and CR1 have their pros and cons. Research them carefully and make the best decision for you.

Be very careful here.....pre-planning on marrying while on a visitor's visa is a dangerous game. It is a visa violation and grounds for a lifetime ban.

CanadaPossible AOS option?
QUOTE (Delicia @ May 28 2008, 08:29 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
My husband is planning on coming to stay with me next month and stay until the term of his I-94 (presumably 6 months so ~December 2008). Our I-130 is still pending with USCIS and it was assigned to an adjudicator over 1 month ago and the petition has not received any attention since that date. If the I-130 is approved while he is still here on the I-94, is it possible to apply for AOS after the approval? Or is there really any point to trying to anyway?

We are literally stuck in our process. We cannot get any assistance from our senator's office until August 2008 and I doubt there is any real help to be had from that direction anyway. We originally had planned on pursuing the IR-1 and skip the rest of USCIS involvement in our lives after it was approved, but its been so long now, I don't know what to do anymore. I am also considering filing a I-129 to get some action on my file, but it seems silly after waiting for so long.

Suggestions?

At least a year seems about the norm now....not much difference from 3.5 years ago.

I have not heard of anyone being able to do this and that, in itself, makes me doubt it can be done. If someone got through the way you are suggesting, I'm sure it would be shouted from the rooftops on here and there would be a stampede of followers. But, in the end, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

CanadaBringing bottles of alcohol across the border
Be careful, here........Some states passed statutes that are extremely restrictive (i.e., you cannotcarry any bottle, container or can on which the 'seal' has been broken) in
ANY part of the vehicle that a driver could access (including the glove
compartment).

If you bring them, pack them in boxes in the trunk or back of the car.

CanadaOpen up your very own Tim Hortons in the US
QUOTE (Carlawarla @ Jul 22 2008, 07:11 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Of course if one had money eh? On the other hand, while I'd love a Tim Horton's down here..it's really not a part of the culture, and I don't know how well at all it would do here. There is like one or two Kriskpy Kreme's here, but frankly, there is no one ever there! I'm surprised they're still open here. Starbucks is closing 16 locations here in the next two months. They said they expanded too fast. I agree. If I go to Starbucks, which is not that often, the only people that are in there seem to be younger people, with those fancy coffee's. Money here is tight right now in St. Louis, and I don't think people have the money to spend on those type of coffees anymore. I don't think many people are that discriminatory on their coffee either. As soon as Jack-In-The-Box and other fast food restaurants started offering iced coffee beverages, people stopped going to Starbucks.

I personally can drink coffee up until I go to bed. Hmm, come to think of it, have you been to Tim's at say...11 pm? There are lots of people there. I grew up being a coffee drinker, all day, all evening. How many people do you know down here that drink coffee when it's 100 degrees out and in the evening? It's dead around here anywhere in the evenings. Socializing here is not going out for a coffee....

Gene and I have talked about this for ages. Not just about a Tim's, but about a small business coffee/books/deli/bakery type of place, but quite frankly, anything we've looked into, that involves "coffee" is probably not going to break even here. Now, I'm talking about St. Louis, so I'm not trying to speak for all the US, but I'd bet the further south you'd go, the less coffee drinkers (I'm talking dedicated coffee drinkers there are. And again, I'd like to point out, it's not just the coffee...it's the culture. It's just not apart of the mid, or southern US culture.

I agree....for the most part, coffee seems to be the first thing to go here.

I'm not a coffee drinker at all. Tell me they offer some good tea and I might think about it.

Socializing here is going to a baseball game, or sitting around the tv and/or radio watching a baseball game with a beer in your hand. It always cracks me up when someone says why are there so many bars in St. Louis? Um.....cause baseball means beer drinking!!!!!!!

K-3 and CR-1 for the most part are taking about the same time.

How about researching this using VJ timelines? Just select Advanced view, filter for Canada, sort by interview date and look at the tome from filing to interview column.

http://www.visajourney.com/timeline/

Do you want to be able to work shortly after arriving in the USA, if so then consider the CR1 visa, it is work auth, K-3 is NOT.

Keep in mind, getting green-card may be quicker from doing the CR-1/IR-1 process through NVC verses adjusting from K-3, it is also less expensive over all.

K-3:
I-130: $355
I-129F: NONE
Consulate: $131
AOS: $1010
($1496)

CR-1
I-130: $355
NVC I-864: $70
NVC Visa fee: $400 ($355+$45)
($825)

NOTE: K-3 cannot, take a job, apply for SSN, or apply for a driver's license until they have EAD, or green-card, EAD can take 90 days or more to get. CR-1 gets green-card upon entry to the USA.

Compare timelines: K-3 was originally developed at a time when the Immigrant CR-1/IR-1 was taking a very long time, this is just not the case any more, NVC has streamlined many processes.

Streamlined is a relative word when you look at the CR-1's coming out of Jamaica.

Lucky for him it's Canada, I suppose.

QUOTE (Carlawarla @ Aug 1 2008, 06:10 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
QUOTE (brown_eyes @ Aug 1 2008, 03:45 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Tonight I picked up a friend from the airport in Bellingham. She's been staying with her bf in San Diego for the past three months. We both live in Vancouver. I was VERY interested to see how we'd be treated when we had to go in to talk to the officials at the border.

But let me back up a bit - on the way to the border we chatted about obtaining Visas as both our boyfriends are US citizens. She is planning on getting the K1 and was told by several US immigration lawyers that the process takes seven months. I thought around a year? She also knew nothing about the petition and when I mentioned it to her she didn't appear to believe me. She kept saying that she was going to go through a lawyer who would help her file everything quickly.

Anyway... we get to the border and like textbook of everything I have ever read on VJ this one official starts grilling her. Why was she away for 3 months? What was she doing? She said she was vacationing with friends (a lie - she was living with her bf who moved from Bellingham to SD) He asked her about her bf and then started to put two and two together. I knew it was game over for her right then. He then found out she lives at home with her parents up here and doesn't have a stable job. In fact, she has a made-up letter from a family friend saying that she works for him and she is on a "leave" from the company. In a nutshell this official called her out for her living in the US what appeared to be illegally. She kept saying she didn't do anything wrong as she is allowed to visit the US for 6 months. He proceeded to write a novel on her file and she was looking pretty stressed.

Now... her plan is to stay in Vancouver for a few months and then go back down to SD to stay with her bf and THEN start all the filing. My question is can she do this? IMO, she has put major flags on her passport and based on what I saw tonight could easily be denied entry. She seems to think a simple letter stating she's on a leave from work is going to be enough to get her by. I think she's wrong but she wouldn't listen to me. I'm really curious to see what the experts have to say. good.gif

Ditto what flames said about the Visa and using a lawyer. This lady might need a lawyer pretty soon if she keeps up the lying. yes.gif You didn't mention whether the BO found out the the letter is a fraud? Gosh, I hope the "family friend" is aware of what happened and wonder why they were so crazy to give someone a fraudulent letter and how this could implicate and impact on them! Geesh!

One thing I will have to say however is that she wasn't in the US illegally. She is allowed to visit for up to 180 days. I'd be REALLY interested to know what was written in your passport and what's now on file. I don't know that it would hurt her K-1, but it might prevent her from visiting until she has a visa now.

If she does plan to come back in a few months I'd really be interested in whether she gets through!

Hmm, reading flames' thread, now I'm confused. This "grilling" she got...was while she was coming back into Canada? That was my understanding anyway, so she hasn't been in the US since this incident.

If I'm confused, I apologize...it's 6 a.m. and I"m two sips into my first coffee! blush.gif

I would say that because she lied about seemingly everything to get there, she was committing fraud from the very beginning.

I realize her intention was not to stay permanently; but still, what if she had stayed? I have to agree with the border agent. While nothing technically illegal happened, the premise was there.

I wish her luck in the filing later. If she's smart, she will heed your advice and come here for some help and answers. If she's fool enough to think a lawyer is going to speed up the process, that's on her.

I liked that it was big enough to have plenty to do and small enough to navigate.

As you know, Carla, St. Louis is easy to navigate if you have a car. Public transportation is not all I want it to be and not all I hoped what they hyped would come to fruition. A big disappointment in my book. Having gone to other cities to vacation and not liking to rent a car, some are better then others. Orlando, for instance, cost us an arm and a leg to get around. I hated it.

I love to shop, even if it is just to window shop. I love that you can just keep going down a bunch of shops in a row. Most, we don't have here in St. Louis. My daughter used to love to have lunch at American Girl Place and see the show. I found their museums to be interesting and accessible. I love to take the double decker bus and hear the funny stories that go with the landmarks. A couple visits ago, we took the Chicago River cruise. The architecture and the stories that go with that architecture are incredible. Just amazing stories. I like that you can walk to so many things in the downtown area.

I like to go over to Belmont and walk the quirky part of town. Blue Man Group at Briar Street Theatre is an amazing show. Different then anything I've ever experienced. We've had the front row each of the 3 times we've seen it.

And, of course, being a huge baseball fan, 2 stadiums in one city is a bit of an anomaly for me. At least in the cities I have been able to visit so far.

For us, it is close enough to ride the bus, take the train, or fly at a decent price. And once you get there, the EL pretty much takes you anywhere you want to go.

Two years ago, Andre had never been anywhere outside of Jamaica and St. Louis, so it was a real treat for him. He'd never been in a building over 4 stories tall, so the Hancock building scared him to death. And, he swore Lake Michigan was an ocean cause it was so big. Looking at Chicago through his eyes made it even more exciting.

That's what I love about Chicago.

We went to Washington, D.C. the last 2 years and while it was fun and interesting, it didn't have the appeal of Chicago.

I go this recipy for the roaches for outside.

1 cup of Borax
1/4 cup of sugar
1/4 cup of chop onion
1 tbls cornstarch
1 tbls of water

the onion attracts them to the bait.
Make a paste roll into balls. Place 2-3 into a sandwich -bag leave the top open. Put the bags Where ever the roaches eat em go home and die other roaches eat them adn die too.

Just be sure to place them where pets and kids can't get to it, I us a simple baking soda and sugar mix in the house since its not toxic to kids and pets but deadly to roaches. baking soda makes a gas in the roaches and they cant get rid of it so they die from gas hahaha

Waterbugs are usually pretty darn big and scary. The roaches we have in our area are small and brown and very quick little suckers.

First of all, are you sure they are cockroaches and not waterbugs?

We have had more then enough of our share of waterbugs this year. They seem to be everwhere. Damn wet weather. Too much rain this entire year.

Roaches are a whole different story. They are a little easier to get rid of with sprays, bombs, exterminators, etc. But, like someone said, they will never be completely gone. They will actually out-survive everything else on the earth.

A rough day today. My beloved is having a rough time medically and I feel so helpless being stuck up here when I wish I could be there to do stuff as simple as get something for her from the other end of the house, so she didn't have to get up for it.

Frustrating, because the divorce process has dragged on, so we still haven't been able to file for our K-1 yet. (I'm thinking that will happen by the end of October.) And I'm wishing there was a quicker, legal way to be together. (A guy can dream, can't he?)

I'm tired of being unable to help. And I'm tired of waiting. I miss her and I'm tired of being apart. The process looked so simple at the beginning. Just time. And here we are. I know it'll be worth it, but I'm tired of waiting.
