Canadaone year later
I just made a scrapbook of the Journey of FutureMrs and Marlon to celebrate their visa approval. In it, I put a card and on that card, I wrote something that effect.....that in a year's time, she will barely remember all the ups and downs of waiting out the visa process. Given just a little time, the time just flies and all this will just be a distant memory.

Andre's been here over a year now and I'd be the first to say the process itself now feels like it was some sort of dream.

Hoping jynx will see this...

I know the rules and regulations for getting a new passport from the U.S. but my question is, can I get a new passport when mine doesn't expire until 2011? I'm not changing my name or anything but my passport is becoming a bit of a problem because even though the photo on it is a year old, it doesn't look like me. I've had it scrutinised time and time again. It was a horrible photo to begin with but it's also WAY too dark (could it have been the scanner at the passport office because it looked "okay" in hardcopy). And my hair has grown a lot since then (it was just under my ears) AND I don't really wear makeup anymore or if I do, it's pretty light.

The lady at the SSA office commented it didn't look like me but the photo on my K3 in my passport does. The USCIS district office security guard commented it didn't look like me and the interviewer I could tell was thinking it until she flipped to my K3. People in stores when we buy booze sort of stare at it for awhile...

Think it'll be a problem to apply this early for a new one? I was thinking about sending it in about a month from now when I have my GC and my state ID in hand. Right now my passport is my only form of ID (well I have an EAD but want something a little more "common" for ID).

Misa,

I..oops I mean "a friend" got a nose job and passport canada said that i oops i mean "she" could get a new passport if she wanted to but it was not necessary as "the pictures are always awful anyways". I wouldnt apply right now...it is taking several months to process applications ESPECIALLY from the US. About 4-5 months through mail even though its says 10 weeks on the website. If i was you, I would wait until I came back to canada to visit and apply in person. You can get a new one and show them proof of travel and it can be done within 2 weeks if you apply in person.

Hope this helps

A

That long to get it ?

I'm about to send Andre's to the Jamaican embassy in NY to renew his. It looks to only take about 6 weeks. I am only renewing his because it is due to be renewed next year. Otherwise, we have had the darn thing in the safe deposit box at the bank since January of this year.

My advice is to never EVER admit drug usage for any reason. However, since he told you to check "no", I suspect that is the end of your issues. He would've been a real jerk and said check "yes" if he meant to cause you any harm.
*JG*FemaleJamaica2007-09-04 08:43:00
CanadaFrustrated.
I've had some of the same issues. People say stuff like it is 100% true, because it happened to them, when what I have experienced is sometimes completely different. And, if you say something different happened to you, you are ridiculed.

I tend to say...."this is what happened to us in Missouri" or something to that effect. I'm not saying I am always right or even know anything.....just relating what happened to me.

In this whole process, I've learned most things are just the luck of the draw. Even if you follow the rules to the "t", depending on who you get on that particular day to look at you paperwork sometimes determines the outcome.

CanadaParents names are not on Birth Certificate for Vancouver interview
QUOTE (Vin75 @ Sep 21 2007, 09:38 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
According to the paperwork it says.

Birth Certificates: The certificate must show that it is an extract from official records and must bear the seal of the issuing authority. The certificate must state the names of both parents. Canadian Commemorative certificate and short-form or wallet-size certificate are not acceptable for visa purposes. Please bring a photocopy if you need your original back.

Unobtainable Birth Certificates: in rare cases, it may be impossible to obtain a birth certificate because records have been lost or destroyed through war. In such a case, secondary evidence may be submitted for consideration, such as baptismal certificate, hospital certificate, school records, and/or a notarized affidavit from a close relative, preferable your parents.

My spouse's birth certificate does not contain her parents names. Do you think I would be okay with the birth certificate and a notarized affidavit from her parents?

Andre's birth certificate ONLY had his mother's name on it. We've had no problems.

*JG*FemaleJamaica2007-10-05 13:38:00
CanadaVery hard question
First of all, I would tell my mother to get over herself. I need more positives in my life then negatives right now. I have a friend who would tell you the entire world will not end if she dies tomorrow, regardless of the fact that her elderly mother, father, and aunt act like it would.

But, to be nice, I would tell her that if that situation occurred, I would do everything I could to try and come home. And, beyond that, I just don't know. That is the best you can do.

What if's are such a load of kaka, IMO. There is no right or wrong answer for them. Cause you just never know until you are in the situation. We all know the best laid plans fail all the time.

CanadaFinding a Dentist
They do not need your social security number before you are seen. You have the right to refuse that.

Also, you have the right to refuse the x-ray. But, unless you have a recent x-ray from your last dentist and/or copies of your records, I think it is pretty much standard procedure in order for the dentist to be able to get a clear picture of what is going on with your teeth.

As far as finding a dentist, most insurance companies have booklets and/or web sites with participating dentists listed. It usually tells you if they are not accepting new patients too.

Good luck to you!

Once you get your visa, you have 6 months to enter the States. Once you do, you have 90 days from the day you enter, to marry and apply for Adjustment.

does that help?

Well, yes and no. You have 90 days to marry. You can wait to adjust. I've known people who have waited a year to adjust. I wouldn't suggest it, though, especially if finding a job is in the picture.

Do you still have the full 90 days? or is it now only 30 days or something...

CanadaEngagement Ring
QUOTE (SonoranSongbird @ Dec 13 2007, 10:32 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
A receipt for your engagement ring can be used as proof of an on-going relationship, but it is not necessary. It is not even necessary to have an engagement ring at all. From what I have seen in posts from people who were denied or required to supply additional evidence at the consulate stage, I think that what they are really looking for in terms of "proof of ongoing relationship" is proof that you communicate with each other on a day-to-day basis between visits (not necessarily every day, but regularly) and that you know each other. As Laura said, the ring doesn't really prove anything because anyone intending to get married for whatever reason can get a ring (heck, I've even heard of women who have bought themselves rings to avoid being hit on by random men while travelling solo!). But they do list it as possible evidence of on-going relationship.

Jomo's Girl, that has to be one of the sweetest things I've ever read---"our spot." Awww!

It was the most amazing spot.....at the very end of the airport runway. If you've ever been to Sangster, it is where the lights come out of the Caribbean to guide the planes in. A little difficult to get to; but amazing to see the planes fly directly over your head.

It's where he asked me to marry him.

If the lawyer is treating you with disrespect and not doing what was promised, get on them. I would call and call and call and drop by and whatever else I had to do to get them moving. CanadaCompromise...
I have conflicting issues with this thread.

I was home sick last week and watching some channel that was comparing the housing market in Phoenix, Arizona, St. Louis, Missouri, and I think it was Las Angeles or New York. They compared houses in the $200,000, $400,000, and $800,000 range. The differences was stagering. St. Louis houses won out by far. Arizona was not far behind in the higher ranges. I would NOT live in the some of the houses they showed in that other area.....Little boxes in not so great neighborhoods!

That being said, I would not want any big changes in my life right now. Andre's been here almost 2 years and in that time we conqured a mountain of paperwork, taught him how to drive, found him a decent job, and worked on paying some bills, etc. Life is just starting to calm down a bit. I could see wanting to buy another house. But, to move to another state, buy a new house, start a new job--lose benefits and seniority.......it would all be too much change for me again so soon.

If it is really an issue with you, start researching other cities on the internet. Look at their median home prices, jobs available, cost of living, schools.....whatever you need. Present it to the hubby and talk it out.

I wish you well in wherever that road takes you.
