I think I will just keep my maiden name on the DL until it expires (next December). As long as I can drive with it it will be fine. And if someone gives me trouble because the name isn't my married name, I can still show them my EAD, or my Green Card when I am approved.

I have never driven on snowy roads in my entire life! So far it hasn't been too bad here, but I can totally understand your fear for the driving test! (or for every other type of driving on snow, not just for the test tongue.gif)

I just came back from the DMV and it was indeed very easy. It took 5 minutes. She just needed the paper that shows I passed the tests, my EAD and my SSN. I'll receive my driver license by mail in a couple of weeks. I have a 60-day temporary driver license (just a piece of paper) that I can use meanwhile.
However it isn't perfect. Apparently since the paper from the driving exam center has my maiden name on it (not sure why they put my maiden name btw...) they had to put my maiden name on the driver license. I can come back and change it when I receive the DL (and pay a fee of course)
I knew it wouldn't be all perfect.

I just received my Employment Authorization Card! Tomorrow I'll go get a driver license! (I don't care about the work part, I just want my license right now laughing.gif)

Also, it's strange because I had a feeling I would receive it in the mail today. Maybe I'm psychic!

I don't want to start working again!!! it's so nice to stay at home! sad.gif
But at least once I receive the EAD card I can finally get a driver license.

lol, you shouldn't tell Bryan that you received the EAD.. tell him that it is denied and that you will have to wait for the greencard laughing.gif laughing.gif

Nah seriously though.. I can imagine what you mean, I wouldn't like it at all if I had to work right now, then again, might have something to do with the weather rolleyes.gif (although not today, very stormy weather today.. bleh rainseason). At the other hand, I am pretty lucky, when I get the EAD, I can still stay at home as I will work from home on my own hours biggrin.gif

I kinda thought of not telling him laughing.gif but that would not be fair.
I wish I could find a job where I can work from home. Or at least I wish I can find a job that I like and pays well and isn't too hard. Wait... I think that is what everyone wants tongue.gif Actually I wish I could be a housewife! That would be my carreer choice. cool.gif

I am also having a hard time finding gifts for Christmas. I don't know if it has to do with being in another country or not, but for some reason my mind completely freezes! laughing.gif Does anyone have the same problem?
Also, it seems that here, people give gifts for their friends too, while Christmas is just for the family IMO. So I don't really know if I should try to find gifts for the friends too...

I don't miss my family too much actually, except when I start thinking of Christmas. Other than that, I have been totally fine for the past 4 months. I haven't missed them too much as I usually am a loner too. I think this whole Christmas thing bothers me because it is an example (and quite a big one, as it was usually the one time of the year where I was sure I would be with my family) of things that change and will never be the same. One example of the things I have left behind.
Maybe I should go back to France for Christmas next year tongue.gif a little early to plan this though wink.gif

Like you, I want to continue to do some French things, just for the sake of it. In France in January, we usually eat "King's cakes" with family and friends around the Epiphany. I guess it used to be religious, but not really anymore. Apparently they don't do it here, and what they call King's cake is a Mardi Gras cake in New Orleans that doesn't look yummy at all... So, I think I am going to bake my own cakes and do it with people here tongue.gif It should be fun.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsJanuary Filers at the CSC - How are you doing?
This month is a strange month... I love Christmas, love the atmosphere, the food, the gift exchange, etc. But it has always been a family thing. There usually is a family dinner with my mother's side of the family on Christmas eve and the next day it's with my father's side. This year I won't be there. And it makes me feel really sad (worse than I thought I would). Actually, my mood swings a lot! For like an hour I'm really happy because it's Christmas, then for another hour I'm sad, and then happy, then sad, etc.
Bryan does not celebrate Christmas (but it doesn't mean that I can't celebrate it, therefore we have a beautiful Christmas tree in the living room, decorated by myself biggrin.gif) There will be a Christmas Eve dinner with his family but it is going to be so different than the ones I'm used to. Big dinners in France usually last 6 hours, and we usually have oysters, salmon, foie gras, etc. I already miss that.
And I don't have many ideas of presents. I found lots of ideas for myself (since B doesn't celebrate it I will offer myself a couple things tongue.gif) but nothing for his parents or for him, for that matter. And as I don't have a driver license, I can't really drive to the store just to look around. So it's kind of hard. I think this week I'll take the bus to go to the closest mall.
I also plan to make some gingerbread cookies, shaped like little men, because this is something I have always wanted to do!!! biggrin.gif And I think that we will try to get some seafood for Christmas day (or the next days), just to make me happy. Because even if he doesn't celebrate it, he is willing to compromise and do whatever makes me feel better, as long as it doesn't mean officially that he is celebrating it tongue.gif (which he does, IMO)

On another note, Bryan is sick, he thinks he has a chest cold. And I woke up this morning feeling kind of sick too... bleh!

My doctor didn't give me the DS2035 either. I plan on sending copies of my "health book" with translations to Dr. Arnold, we'll see how that works. But I'll do it only when I receive a RFE or a letter for the interview. My case has been sent to California Service Center, so I don't know if I'll have an interview...

Where is the info about the TB skin test? On the I-693 instructions, it only says we need the vaccination part:

QUOTE
If you were admitted as a:
A. K-1 fiancé(e) or a K-2 child of a K-1 fiancé(e), or as a
B. K-3 spouse of a U.S. citizen or a K-4 child of a K-3 spouse of a U.S. citizen, and
C. You received a medical examination prior to admission, then

a. You are not required to have another medical examination as long as your Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, is filed within one year of your overseas medical examination.
b. You will, however, be required to complete Part 1, Information about you, and submit the vaccination section of Part 2 with your adjustment of status application. A designated civil surgeon must complete the vaccination section and Part 5, the Civil Surgeon's Certification.

They changed the I-693 and the requirements for anyone who had their medical AFTER 8/1. Since ours was 8/8, we are subject to the new requirements. The guide here at VJ hasn't been updated yet since it was so recent. A lot of K1 people over on the AOS forum have gotten RFEs for NOT submitting an I-693, even if it was just with the vaccinations on it.

Thats odd coz I didn't see anything new on the USCIS AOS instructions either and you might expect it to be there :S

But oh well, if it is for people after August the 1st, then I think I have not much to worry (and neither should the posters above who had their medical on time worry then I think smile.gif ).

I thought it was for people who had their medical after July 1st... Oh well, I guess we'll just wait and see!

Happy Thanksgiving to everybody! I cooked my first Thanksgiving dinner. Usually they have the dinner at Bryan's aunt place, but this year they didn't want to do it, so we did it at our place, just me and Bryan and his parents. It was a whole lot of cooking! but it turned out really good smile.gif

I just looked it up on the internet (Google is indeed my friend hehe) and there they say the following for Minnesota:

QUOTE
Non-Citizens
Your valid foreign driver's license grants you driving privileges for no longer than the length of your visa. Non-citizens face specific identification requirements, and non-citizen licenses are issued with distinguishing features to classify them as such.

Kinda sucky but I think your French license is not valid anymore in Minnesota sad.gif

I actually live in Missouri, not Minnesota, but thanks for looking it up anyway smile.gif I think it's the same in Missouri. As you said, I am now out of status. After being angry a few days, I am starting to think that it doesn't matter to much, that I will probably receive my EAD soon (maybe next month?). I don't want to go back to work though... Well, someone on VJ said that the international licenses are only for visitors. Someone else said that it can be used only for 3 months.
I asked to the Highway patrol and they said that basically, there's no real rule about it and it depends who arrests me. if the officer feels like telling me I can't drive with it because I'm a resident, then he can do it.

The Department of Revenue website says that while adjusting my status I can get a DL, so I went to a first DMV office where they told me that it was wrong, I can't get one until I am approved for the AOS (or for the EAD). I went to a second office and the woman went to ask her supervisor (I assume that's what she did, she disappeared with all my paperwork for 5 minutes), and told me that when I have a proof that I am adjusting my status I can apply for a DL. So, just to make sure, when I received my NOA1, I came back to their office to ask them if the NOA1 is really what I need, and this time they told me that no, it had to be approved. which didn't make sense. So once outside the office, Bryan called the Department of Revenue for Missouri, and they told us that yes, I can have a DL even without being approved for the AOS. They told us that if the DMV office says something else, they should call the "Fraud and Immigration" department (yeah they put immigration with fraud, isn't that funny?). So we came back inside the office, told us what they had told us on the phone, and the woman said "Ok, then you go pass your driving exam and then you come back here and we'll call them to make sure, and there shouldn't be any problem"
So after all I should be able to have a DL soon.
And the DMV of Hawaii may be nice, but the ones in Missouri ARE the gates of Hell!!! tongue.gif

A little update on the driver license.
Friday I passed my driving and writing exams. The people at the Missouri Highway Patrol didn't have any problem with me adjusting my status. So after I passed the tests, we went to the DMV. There the woman said that i was her first K1, she started doing whatever she had to do, and when she realized that there isn't an expiration date on the NOA of AOS, she asked someone else in the office and they said "No! no expiration date, no Driver license". So we had them call the Department of Revenue in Jefferson City, they stayed on the phone very long, and while they were trying to deal with that, Bryan also called the Department of Revenue, just to make sure that what they had told him last time was good. After waiting 20 minutes, we finally got an official response, which is that as long as I don't have an EAD or a form that says I am approved for AOS, I can't have a DL. Why didn't they tell us that last time? I keep thinking that it doesn't make sense, as when I receive such form I will not be on AOS anymore, I'll be a permanent resident, so they shouldn't even have a "AOS" category in their paperwork!
Anyway, we left the DMV and even though it made me really angry and sad, now I just have to wait until I receive my EAD or GC. I just hope that the paper they gave me that proves that I passed the test doesn't expire before I get one of them... I don't want to redo the test (I almost failed because of how stressed I was... another thing that made me really angry, depressed and sad)
So, time to move on. I am not going to think about this until I have the right paperwork. It sucks, I can't do anything about it, but I have no choice. So here it goes out of my mind.

@Jeroen: yes I think the SSN problem is because of the name change after the marriage; some people at social security offices say that they can't do it because it will not match the name on the immigration file. So I guess only women have that problem tongue.gif

@Rachel: I can understand how you feel. I did have saved enough money back in France, but to see how fast it disappears makes me go crazy sometimes. In the end I'm sure you'll figure out how to deal with all these money issues. And who knows, if you had booked your flight for December, maybe something would have happened that would have made it impossible to save a few extra hundreds, and then you would have said: "I wish I had booked a flight for January!" wink.gif

I also just read the part of the bundle package in AOS fee... do you think it also applies for kids? my kids will only need to pay $600 each since they will be applying together with me, I would also want them to apply for AP and EAD if they could apply without additional fee. EAD is needed for them to get SSN and it will be nice if they could get SSN the soonest also.

It's good to hear that the SSN problem got solved at Raleigh. I got my SSN 4 days before my I-94 expired, I was lucky!

As for the EAD for your kids I have no idea how it works. I assumed that the EAD was only used for work, which would mean that it isn't for children but maybe I am wrong. I don't remember reading anything about it. Maybe someone else knows more on the subject.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsJanuary Filers at the CSC - How are you doing?
dbears, I just posted in the VSC thread (I didn't see that you posted here too), unless I am not aware of something, if you apply for EAD at the same time as AOS, there is no additional fee, you just pay the $1010 for AOS and that's all.

As for the SSN, you are eligible. Apparently it really depends on who you talk to at the social security office. When I went there, they were not sure I could receive an SSN because I was already married and therefore my name would not match the name on my immigration file, but they sent the request anyway and a few weeks later I received my SSN, in my married name (I had other problems, my I-94 didn't match my name in the SSA system, but apparently they figured it out correctly in the end).
You should ask in the "Working & Traveling prior to getting a Green Card" forum if you haven't done it already. There was several documents there that showed that K1 visa holders who got married could receive an SSN. I had printed them and brought them with me at the office just in case, maybe you should do that. In my case though, they didn't ask to see them.

Good luck with those steps smile.gif It sure isn't easy but in the end everything will work out right.

It's valid until 11/04/09, so I can keep it for a year until it expires, they didn't even look at the I-94.

Sorry to hear the rest of the DL is causing so much problems.. it's odd to hear that some areas are so easy with the DL and some others are making so much troubles. Have you been to a different DMV also or not? I know, for example, that there are 4 DMV's all within 10-15 miles radius for me. Maybe changing location might help too.

I did.
The first office said "No way"
The second office said "OK" the first time, then "No, that doesn't work" the second time.

You live in Colorado, right? I found this: Identification to get a DL but they don't talk about adjustment of status... so I don't know if you can get a DL for sure, but the department of revenue should know.
