I hate those insurances! It is so unfair. It's like they can choose if they want to screw up people's life or not. mad.gif I hope that the insurance at her job can cover it. Otherwise maybe you should both fly back to the Netherlands a month before her due date and stay there until she gets the baby. wink.gif

I'm like Rachel... I wish I could have a baby but it isn't going to happen anytime soon, sadly. Well, one part of myself says "sadly" because I can't wait to have a child, but the other part of myself knows it's probably better if we wait until I'm kind of used to being in the USA and we have enough money to at least afford the conception (we'll have to do IVF). OK I'm kidding myself. I think right now aside from the money we're just waiting for the future dad to be ready. tongue.gif

Congratulations again, Jeroen smile.gif

Ooh yes Rachel Jamba Juice is so good! And Target is one of my faves!!!

Cecile I hear ya on houses looking the same and boring! That is called American suburbs for the most part haha! What stinks in our area is it is hard to get a 2 story house under 100,000 and we are just not digging the single floor ranch style house which I have a feeling we may end up in :/ Dang economy haha....we will be in our apartment at least another year though.

Same here. I really want a two story house, it looks much better and at least that's a little bit of exercise to climb the stairs everyday tongue.gif But it's hard to find at low prices. And we'll probably stay in our apartment one more year too, just to save more money for a better down payment (and to have time to find something we really like)

Blake says "Hi!" to all of you. I sent you a PM, but if I forgot to send it to someone please let me know.

I definitely miss being able to walk everywhere. When we were in New Orleans I started feeling sad because there was so many different architectures in the town, with old houses, etc. Here everything looks the same. And we are looking for a house (but we'll probably wait before we buy anything, at least we'll wait until I get a job) and the main problem I am having is that I want something that looks nice, but they all look the same to me. At least in our price range... and the neighborhoods look the same, nothing looks exceptional.
Of course if I was in France I may have the same problems, maybe I'm way too picky. But it seems to me that there's more 'diversity' in Europe.

I'm glad you had fun on vacation! Was the French Quarter very French?

Not really. The name of the streets are in French, some restaurants/bars/other social places have a "French name" but 3 times out of 4 it's either spelled wrong or doesn't mean anything (or maybe it's just because it's the Creole language and not French?). But in itself it looked more like a city in Europe than in the USA. The houses looked old and elegant, and there was almost no chain stores or restaurants inside the French quarter. It was nice to not see Walmart or Target when we were in the French Quarter (or course Walgreens and MacDonalds and other places were all around the French Quarter wink.gif )

Wow that's a lot of shelves Rachel! Almost looks like a bookstore tongue.gif

We just came back of a one week vacation in New Orleans, it was very nice, we had a lot of fun! we walked a lot in town (French Quarter, and also Algiers, the historic part of town), we went to the Lake Pontchartrain, we took a tour of the swamps in Slidell and then went in Mississippi on the coast because I wanted to see the ocean biggrin.gif There are still a lot of destroyed houses, the ocean front in Mississippi looked all empty. 80% of the houses we saw were not houses anymore, we could only see the foundation pillars of the houses, the rest was brand new. In New Orleans it's fine if you are in the tourist areas or the business district but as soon as you get out of these areas there are more broken houses.
Anyway we had a wonderful time!

Now it's going to be job hunt again. Not much luck on that side...

The thing that bugs me about food, other than the fact that there is way too much processed food and that they are way too bad for you, is that when you go to a restaurant (let's say a restaurant with entrees around 10-15 dollars, so somewhat nice but not super upper scale either), the only 'vegetables' choice is either broccoli, mashed potatoes or fries. I'm a little tired of having only that choice every time we go to a restaurant. Especially since I don't care for meat, so I choose depending on the vegetables.

AOS interview scheduled for March 12!!!! No change showed up on USCIS website, but we got a letter in the mail the same day as the EAD! Exciting mail day for us! WAHOO! I honestly haven't even thought about the AOS interview. I feel like the hard part is over and this interview will be a breeze... maybe I should be a little more nervous whistling.gif

No leads on any job searching in our house. How's the hunt going with everyone else?

Also a random side note: When you guys log into VJ and want to check on a thread and see the newest posts, is there a way you can do that starting with the last post you made? That way you know which pages you've already read? This is probably a silly question, but man, I can't figure it out! wacko.gif

Also in other news, we finally get to do a little honeymoon! Our wedding was very casual and we didn't even think of a honeymoon at the time, but we've been saving our pennies and are going to take advantage of some time off before we get jobs to take a little vaca. Yay!

Congrats on the interview date!

If you look at the new posts by the "View New Posts" page, you can click on the little square just on the left of the name of the topic you want to see and it will send you to the posts you haven't read yet in the topic. However if you look at the post through "View topics" in "My controls", I don't think you can. I have been wondering the same thing for a few months now! It would be better to have that fiture on the "view topics" page too.

Not too much luck with the job searching so far... I've had three interviews with recruiting/consulting agencies in IT, but they don't really have any job for 'entry-level' position and I only have a little less than two years of experience, in my home country.

We are going to New Orleans, Louisiana for Valentine's day! We're going to leave Friday morning (13th) and will be back Saturday of the following week (21st). I consider it as our honeymoon biggrin.gif We figured that it would be better to take a vacation before I start working, otherwise we would have to wait until I get vacation time and that won't happen anytime soon!

lol I guess this means I am not the only one who kind of misses the food from back home xD

I mean, lol, I got even my mom sending me croissants and baguettes (well, the kind you can keep a bit longer).. they taste sooooo good lol. And not only that of course, she sends stuff the whole time lol

How do you guys feel about the US bread for example? Personally I don't like it much lol, I don't know what it is missing but it made us to buy a breadmaker soon so we can make our own breads lol.

I make my own bread. No breadmaker either. I follow that recipe, maybe it is the one Pam was talking about: http://www.nytimes.c...1mrex.html?_r=2 It is very easy to make! Bryan says that before he came to France, he didn't know that bread could be tasty; that shows how bad the US bread is wink.gif
I miss food a lot. Especially candies and junk food. Well, I know there is a lot of junk food here but I have a few specific items that I love in France that don't exist here. I miss having fish and seafood. My parents live 15 km away from the Atlantic ocean, I grew up with seafood.
And I have to say I'm kind of tired of having to make/bake everything that I have a craving for, I wish I could just go to the bakery and buy the stuff! Unfortunately that can't happen.

Congrats Hawkeye! Good luck at the interview biggrin.gif That was fast on the biometrics appointment Steph! Levi was fingerprinted and all that at his interview in Vancouver. Wonder if they do it again in that case......

I think everyone has to be refingerprinted for AOS. I'm pretty sure everyone had it done at the K1 interview. From what I've read (and from what I remember), we will have to do it again when we remove the conditions for our green card.

Maybe we should try to complain more and things would happen faster.

No gym membership then tongue.gif No, seriously, I was just really curious because the only documents I could find said "if you lie about your citizenship in order to get a job", but I couldn't find anything about just lying for other reasons. It's actually called the "National Body Challenge", so maybe it is sponsored by the government or something like that. I don't think it's the gym company who decided it's only for citizens. Still, I don't see why legal immigrants shouldn't be able to get this.

I read that the discovery health national challenge (or whatever it is called) gives free memberships at a gym for a month. So I went on the website to sign up because it would definitely be good to do some kind of exercise... and apparently you can only subscribe if you are a US Citizen!!! mad.gif
I can understand that some jobs are only for US citizens, national security and all that, but seriously, why shouldn't we be able to get that free membership?!

I said that to Bryan and he told me: "maybe you can lie and say you're a citizen if they ask, they won't find out". Which I am definitely NOT going to do! But I'm curious, would that be a federal offense to say I'm a US citizen just to get a free membership?

Rachel, the sunset, the flowers and the cake look wonderful! smile.gif

CourtAndGrey, I have noticed two trends: some people receive their EAD/AP several months before the green card, and for some other people they seem to receive the green card before (or at the same time!). My guess would be that you will have news about the AOS soon, since they have already been working on it. But that is only a guess, maybe I am wrong.
However, since you sent your packet in the middle of October, they should approve you EAD and AP within the next two weeks (that is assuming that they do work according to the timelines. good.gif
