And since you were married before, maybe you can help us with the question about our name change.
When we got married, they never asked us if I wanted to take Bryan's name. Do we only need to go to the social security office to have it change, or was there something that we should have filled out at the courthouse/ recorder of deeds office to have it changed first?

I just called the recorder of deeds to ask them and they said that the only thing we need to do is go to the social security office and DMV with a certified copy of the marriage certificate (which we received this weekend) and that is how the name gets changed. So it seems that everything should be ok smile.gif that's a relief!

OK then we'll see when we go to the SS office.

By the way, I read that changing both names as you want depends on the states. in New York people can do whatever they want, but not in every state. Could you find what you can do in Michigan?

about your concern about the name: they didn't change my name either! you need to ask to change it. When I went after we got married at the office of social security number to ask for info, the girl in front of me got married and was asking to change her name. But since we don't have social security number, I don't know when we will be able to change our name...

Congratulations to you too!
Maybe when we go to get the social security number, we can change it directly? this is all so weird!

And yes, as Jeroen says, we can get the SSN with only the K1. Just print everything he sent you.

Don't you have to do that or tell people that when you get a marriage license or when you file the marriage certificate?

They never asked! so the whole time I thought they would ask us after the 'ceremony' but they didn't :S

So Sunnybear, why do you hate your dress now?

btw, yesterday I asked Bryan if he wanted me to show him my dress, and he said "No, I want to wait until the ceremony". ohmy.gif I wanted to show it to him because I can't wait until next spring/summer! And I also wanted him to take a picture of it, but I guess that is not going to happen anytime soon.

I understand why you want to wait, you have very valid reasons.
You could also file now instead of waiting for October, since we are almost in September. The I-129F will not be approved before the end of his contract anyway, so it would not hurt. You would send everything to USCIS soon (assuming that his job gives him enough free time to file the paperwork and send it to you, which does not take very long) and while waiting for the approval, his contract would end and then he can negotiate as you planned. You would gain one month. smile.gif

and don't worry for hijacking the thread wink.gif it's not the first time and won't be the last tongue.gif

Honestly, this might sound weird.. but I'm actually looking forward to the wait. I've known for several months that we were going to file in October, so I've had a lot of stuff prepared and have been wanting so much to just send everything in. I know I'll probably kick myself a few months from now for saying that, though. tongue.gif

Just curious, why do you have to wait until October? if it's too personal and you don't want to answer, that's ok, it's just that I am very curious!

However I have one concern. They never asked me if I wanted to take his name (which I want to do) or keep mine. Bryan says that since they didn't ask they'll just do it like they do with 99% of people and will give me his name. I hope he is right!

OK I admit that it does feel different to know that I am his wife and he is my husband. The ring on my finger isn't the same anymore tongue.gif and this morning when he left I was going to tell him something like "have a good day, my dear husband" but I was too asleep to say such a long sentence tongue.gif And when he says "it's none of your business" (jokingly) I can say "now I'm your wife, everything you do is my business!" tongue.gif

I wrote a long text in French about our wedding day, to send to my family. It has lots of details. I will probably translate it so you can read it here, but it's so long I don't want to do it right now.
However I do have pictures! here . We did not take pics at the courthouse as we went there alone. it was OUR intimate moment (even though we were in front of 50 strangers)

I still haven't taken pictures of the wedding dress (that I will only wear next year for the ceremony) but I'll try to take some soon. I want to show it to Bryan soon.

But I doubt I will sleep very well tonight tongue.gif I read a lot about the AOS process and have filled out pretty much everything, but I don't feel like reading it all again to figure out what we need... yes, today I am lazy and excited!
Does anybody know if we only need to ask for the marriage certificate (once we're married) or should we also ask for some certified copies as well?

I don't miss many things, and I don't even miss my family or my friends (don't tell them), but roundabouts are great! I hate it here when I take the wrong road and can't just turn back around the roundabout. Or when you want to cross a huge road (and go towards the left) and there are too many cars. if there was a roundabout near the exit of the apartment complex (for example), we could turn on the right, turn around the roundabout (ahah I love to say this!) and then be back on the right left road.

Oh - roundabouts can be truly horrendous over here! We LOVE roundabouts! We also love narrow, steep and windy roads. smile.gif UK people find it very amusing that US roads alert you to the slightest bend, and have such low speed limits.

So how are you adapting to St. Louis, are you a Cardinals fan yet? (I heard it was required for entry). I couldn't get into the albums to see what boots are being talked about, so I'll just have to use my imagination.

laughing.gif he probably woke up at some point, but we left before that!
yes, all my albums are private, and I believe you have to have a myspace account to see any pictures. Not sure which is better between myspace and facebook. I went on myspace because that is where Bryan and his friends had profiles.
I wish the city was better for pedestrians (in my area it's definitely not, I'm scared everytime I have to cross the road), but other than that I like being here. I'm not a Cardinals fan yet and I doubt I will be (usually sports aren't for me). Although I went to Bryan's softball games the past weekends and we also went to the batting cages (is that how it is called?) a few days ago. It was my first time with a bat in my hands. He said I did well for my first time smile.gif

Aw! Maybe my friend has a more expensive pair, then, as I believe hers are pretty good quality and she paid quite a bit for them.

I'm trying to strike a balance between needing to buy a few more clothes so I can 'stock up' before I leave for the US, and not buying too many new things as then I won't be able to fit everything in my suitcase. Being in the US will be a great opportunity to get a new wardrobe - but only if I can afford it!

sunny - I am trying to google Michigan legislation for you, but not having very much success so far! 'last name' and 'marriage' are common search engine words!

By the way, how are things going for you, Cecile?

Mine came from Hot Topic, I think I paid them 40 dollars. They were (and still are) my favorite shoes ever!

Things are going fine so far.
Except all the wedding stuff that is soooooo stressful. Every night I dream about the wedding. And it's so annoying because it is only the small courthouse wedding, not even the "big" ceremony wedding. After the courthouse, we will probably go to the park where we had our first date, and then in the evening we are going to a restaurant with some friends and family, so they can celebrate with us. Well, Bryan basically wanted to invite everyone he knows and see who would want to come, while I wanted to select a few people only. So we ended up making a list of people, but that is still more than I thought. there is going to be 10 friends of us, and he just told his mother to contact the immediate family to tell them they were invited (for me, immediate family meant mother, father, grandparents, and his aunt and uncle in St. Louis) well, his mother also called a few other people to tell them that her son was getting married, and his aunt from Connecticut decided that she would join us for the restaurant. So she's going to drive 6 hours to come here (+6 to go back there) for the restaurant.... ok, not so much for the 'select guest list'...
and yesterday Bryan comes back from work and tells me that he called his aunt from Connecticut and that she now wants to come to the courthouse with us! #######! We had planned that only him and I would go to the courthouse, not even his parents! What is the point in having a ceremony later (which we had decided because it would make it easier for people who live far from here btw) if the whole family comes now? so I don't really know what is going to happen here. I clearly told B that I didn't want her to come with us, but he says that she is stubborn, that once she has something in her mind, you can't change it. So we'll see what happens in the next days.
Oh and my mother decided to make invitations (not exactly invitations... more notifications) to the family in France to tell them that I was getting married next week. She didn't even ask me, basically she bought everything for the invites, printed a picture of us 10 times, and let me know just before she sent them that she was doing it. I feel like everyone else is taking control of our wedding.
We got our wedding bands yesterday smile.gif it is so exciting!
And we also bought his outfit for the wedding.

Other than wedding stuff, everything's fine biggrin.gif

I don't have them anymore sad.gif They were not very good quality (though I couldn't expect a lot more considering how relatively cheap they were) and the heel was not very stable anymore. So I got rid of them before I left France, along with a few other pairs that I never wore. But I loved them.

Unfortunately I'd say YES it makes it harder! sad.gif Check the laws in your state - it can be a huge hassle for the man to change his name, unfortunately. And whereas the woman gets to change her name for free, often the man has to pay a fee.

I'm not sure about that; I remember reading here that when you get married both the groom and the bride can change their name very easily (and can choose whatever name they want).
I don't know if the next administrative things become harder or not though, but I'd think that as long as everything is written on the marriage certificate, it should not be harder for the man than for the woman.

Oh and I absolutely love your maiden name, Steph. I like Cobbson and Cobb, but I prefer Carlson tongue.gif

I think you can have your hair up and still have it look classy and casual - It doesn't necessarily have to be the whole "princess" thing with tight ringlet curls and rhinestones in the hair and all that stuff. You could even go half-up, half-down if you want it to be more relaxed-looking, or if you stuck deciding between the two.

Thanks for the links! I will definitely look at these. And it actually can't be the whole princess thing because I'll have to do it myself!

I'd like to put my hair up too, but I'm afraid that it will look too "strict". But up would definitely look better than down, especially since my hair is very long now and looks kind of flat because of its weight. And I'm not a hairdresser, I doubt I'd be able to do a fancy hairstyle. Damn, only a week and a half to find the right one and to practice! tongue.gif

We are going to get married on August 27th, in less than 2 weeks!
We also decided that we would not go with the full attire. I will still show him my wedding dress that day but I will go to the courthouse wearing another dress. And same for him, he won't get a tuxedo for it but will still wear nice clothes.

(warning: girl stuff... sorry for the men here...tongue.gif)
Yesterday I went shopping by myself.I drove him to work and then drove to the mall, the interstate road was scary but I managed to drive pretty well (although the other drivers may say something different...) So I went to the mall and started thinking that I need at least a necklace to wear with my "courthouse wedding" dress. And I couldn't find anything that I liked! But today I looked at what I have at home (woohoo I actually called our apartment "home") and found a necklace that will be nice with it. And it's the necklace that Bryan offered me for Valentine's day last year, so it's perfect biggrin.gif
But I just realized... I have no idea what I am going to do with my hair!!!!!!! HELP!!!

Cecile I have a question for ya....in the packet that is a Not to open Packet do you ever get to open that? Or do you hand it over to someone else? I am just wondering as I sent the CSC my only legit original copy of divorce decree so now wondering if I will have to go get another now in order to get our marriage license haha.....Thanks!

My "Not to open packet" was opened by the immigration officer in Minneapolis in front of me. I do not know exactly what was inside (except the medical forms, because he looked at them for 30 seconds). He wrote a few things on the forms and kept everything. I'd say you will probably need to a new divorce decree copy.

They asked me if I had it, I said that I didn't since it was only for men. She then said: "OK. We still ask him because not so long ago everyone had to fill it out."
So I didn't give it to them and was still approved without any problem. If you have filled it out, bring it with you. Otherwise I wouldn't bother.

Don't worry, once you receive it, it is going to be very easy. They tell you exactly what you have to do. It may be a little more complicated than it was for me because you had a daughter, but it can't be that hard either. I sent packet 3 back one day after I received it.

Well, you would check yes because you do, at some stage, wish to apply for a SSN. It doesn't mean you'll be given the SSN there and then. smile.gif

I didn't fill out part 2 of that form, by the way, as the London embassy said not to. That might just be the London embassy, however.

I agree with that, this is how I filled it out. But at the embassy they said they didn't need that part of the form.

Gawd I'm so nervous already but I'm unsure if it is because of the interview or because I have to go to work tomorrow... I will have a not-so-fun talk tomorrow with some manager and, on top of that, I will give them my resignation letter tomorrow as well (I really can't stay there, if I get denied on the visa I will still leave there coz I'm so fed up with them) so yah, I reaaallllly hope I will get approved on tuesday.. can't wait to hear that I have to leave my passport with them biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I'm crossing my fingers for you good.gif
