United KingdomWell now........talk about coming full circle....
Morning all. Was a regular on here a few years ago when I was the alien fiance. Now I find myself the petitioner after falling hard for a fine Yorkshire lass - who'd a' thunk it. So strange to be back in familiar, yet unfamiliar territory. All I know is that this site proved to be an invaluable source of information and support, and many friendships (pretty much all of which stand to this day) were forged. Here's hoping the same holds true this time around.

Now then, to the crux of the matter. It's been a while. But I remember what a pain in the ####### it all was. And I so can't be arsed to trawl through endless ###### archives to refresh my memory. I mean, I will if I have to, but I'd rather not. Which is why I'm kinda hoping someone currently going through this, in my exact situation, could cut through a lot of the red tape for me (or at least direct me to an existing thread they may know of).

Situation:

Me - permanent legal resident (10 year Green Card). Not a U.S. citizen. Eligible to file for naturalization in May 2014.

Her - UK citizen. No criminal record. A regular Mary Poppins.

Quickest way to get her here, folks?

Thanks. -x-

United KingdomTravelling to London

Hi VJers.. its been a while since I've been here. I just needed a quick answer to a retarded question before I book my return ticket to London. So I am going to book the ticket under my married name which is on my GC but when I arrive in the UK, I will show them my British passport... aren't they going to see my ticket and see the married name verses whats on my passport?? Will I encounter problems ??
Sorry... its just that the ticket is a whooping $1002.54 and I need to make sure that I know what to expect..

Thank you thank you,
Dora

Sorry I didn't mention that my maiden name is on my British passport.
Thanks,

Fvcking hell, Dor! Talk about two bad apples turning up again at once! I've just re-appeared here too 5 years on from the last journey's beginning! How are ya, luv?

United KingdomCourier. Contacts. Changes. Confusion.

I decided to make some phone calls this morning to see what I could find out about the courier. ( I don't know if you noticed a post yesterday by someone wanting to have their passport collected at home and delivered to the embassy because London was ready to issue their visa. He was told CSC was the courier. I googled CSC and they are the courier for Canada.  I found a CSC in the UK and emailed them via their contact page since it was night in the UK by that time.)

So phone calls today and what I learned--

DX Secure.
1) They do not do visa courier service for London since yesterday July 29.
2) They do not collect UK passports to deliver to London
3) all she knew was the new courier is called CSC.
4) They continue to do US passport services for American passports and still have a presence at the embassy but on the Americans with issues side, not the UK people getting visas side. (Somebody going to an interview can take a look and see if anybody is manning the courier desk in the corner. Who volunteers to check it out in person?)

CSC couriers in Northampton tel:07855337519
This was my Google attempt at the name CSC.  I had asked a billion questions in my email.  I didn't get an answer to the email so rang them.
"Are you the courier for visas from the American Embassy in London?" NO
When I refreshed their webpage, I noticed the bold red writing had been added that had not been there earlier. Kinda funny. See it here http://www.csc-couriers.co.uk/

US Embassy London  (at no point was asked to pay)

tel: 020  3608 6998 - this was on the contact page of their website. I got circled around many automated messages telling how to get a visa, that I could use VWP, that I could use various websites to find out what I needed to know. Then it disconnected.

tel: 09042-450-100 that is the number posted on VJ for the operated assisted line. Not a working number. Probably because I'm not in the UK??  The phone is our UK Vonage phone, so the number is a Bedford number 01234 xxxxxx.  It didn't like it I guess.

tel: 020 7499-9000 - the number on VJ for the embassy switchboard
Much faffing around before it said for ALL other questions, press 8.
So I got a lovely young lady and started asking questions.
Who is the visa courier?
What if somebody was in AP and needed to have their passport collected?
I am aware of the new payment and courier online thing, but it is a mess and not very intuitive with fiance's guessing whether to pick immigrant or non-immigrant and those needing to respond to 221(g) not knowing who will collect their passport for delivery to the IV unit.

So she said she knew they were experiencing "teething" problems and the administration is working all week to try to resolve issues with it.
And if I wanted to make a written enquiry to the embassy, they have an online way to do that and guided me to it.  I believe it is new.

Contact form http://london.usemba...ntact_form.html

So that's all I know for this morning folks. Like all changes I've seen in the London process, it will become clear eventually as you all go through it and report your experiences

Fwiw, I have a mate who's over here (been here a year longer than I have as it goes) that has a conviction for lamping an OB outside a football ground and he was approved. It's hysterical. It really is. And obviously all the more entertaining for those of us that have been down the K-1 route. I know "reality" TV is actualy anything but, but the producers could have least TRIED to make it a little more convincing/authentic!

Russ & Paola - He's clearly gay. End of story.

Mike & Aziza - She has the most pronounced American accent I've ever heard for a 21-year-old Russian!

Alan & Kirylam - Dork/Aspiring model? Nah!

Louis & Aya - The only one of these "relationships" I could see as being genuine (but I doubt it is).

Compulsive viewing though (albeit taken with a large pinch of salt!)

Damian PMaleEngland2014-02-23 19:05:00
United KingdomWhat airline do you guys fly with?

I always flew NorthWest because they were one of the first airlines to have the "on demand" style entertainment in economy. Never had a bad flight with them. Was kinda gutted when they merged with Delta actually, although I'm reading good things about them on this thread (I've not had the chance to fly with Delta yet despite having several thousand Skymiles courtesy of my trips with NW).

A little tip btw for those of you who may not be familiar with domestic U.S. flying - fly Southwest. They're the Ryanair/Easyjet of America, but it's not just because of the (relatively) cheap fares that I'm recommending them. It's mainly because Southwest operate a fleet exclusively consisting of modern 737s, whereas the other main domestic carriers (known as "regionals") operate a very suspect fleet of decrepit MD-80s and the like, some of which I'm quite sure wouldn't get an air worthiness certificate in the Eurozone. Also, their pilots are paid a pittance - the Captain of the Continental plane that went down over Buffalo a few years back (pilot error) was only making $60k a year (that's really not a lot of money for an airline pilot - the trans-Atlantic guys flying the heavy iron make 4 times that). And the co-pilot (a young gal fresh out of training) was making less than $30k. And you all know what you get if you pay peanuts, right?

United KingdomWill a return flight affect my Immigration process

You know, reading this thread and thinking back, I arrived on a return ticket which I subsequently never bothered to cancel, but:

A) That was five years ago

B) I've never been back since

 and

C) It was an airline (Northwest) that no longer exists!

So whichever way you slice it, I'm pretty sure I'm fine!

Damian PMaleEngland2014-03-05 10:46:00
United KingdomWill a return flight affect my Immigration process

Most airlines will let you change the date of your return flight, so why not keep 'pushing' the date back every couple of months until you can use it to visit home?

A friend of mine did this when she moved to US and experienced no problems.

^^^^^This^^^^^^^^^^

Also, does anyone know what the deal is with the one-way ripoff? If the journey originates from the UK I mean? Because the same doesn't apply if you fly from the U.S. - a one way ticket is about half of what a return costs, as if ###### should be.

I was just saying this to another VJ member the other day, also from Sheffield, whose final timeline, interview etc, almost mirrored mine. It's really odd how these things crop up. Nice part of the City is Dore, too.

It's odd that this city has been my home for nearly 20 years now, yet soon I'll be half the world away starting life over again. Sobering - but genuinely can't wait. I think that's what caused my "melancholia" for fish and chips and curry before I've even left the UK!!

Which part of the city do you live in? I'm having a concurrent conversation with her via email!!!!!!!!!

Way north sir, been in Sheffield since I started high school but my family are from here since, as my Sheffielder boss would put it, "since God were a lad".

Will have to give it a try, for sure! I'm not over there until the end of the month, so will plan accordingly!

Interesting - my second (and indeed current) wife is also from Sheffield, where she resides as we speak whilst the F2A application I've filed on her behalf takes its course. She lives in Dore, and works part-time in a pub in Gleadless. Small world, eh?

Jack's Stack (the Overland Park one - the KC one is only so so even though it's the same ownership) > Oklahoma Joe's. Trust me on this. It's just that OJ's was on Man Vs Food and so has been uber-hyped as a result. Don't get me wrong, it's great 'Que, but Jack's Stack is better.

And of course you're perfectly entitled to crave a fishcake butty (can I assume you are from North of the Watford Gap in yearning for such a "delicacy?") wink.png

I was happy to find Marmite over there.

I was not happy that none of my US family liked it. Sigh. Still, all the more for me!

Reading this thread made me think of all the things I'm going to miss - The chippy, for one and Indian takeaway definitely. I've not found a single place in KC that does that. We've had "fish and chips", but store-bought, so I'm going to have to learn to cook while I wait to be able to work!! My fiancee can cook pretty well, but I'm useless at it, so I'm making this a project now biggrin.png

I will also miss the proper BBC. BBC with adverts just feels wrong! Oh, and by extension, David Attenborough. I know the Discovery Channel changes the voiceovers on his documentaries to other people, and that's a crime if you ask me... Not that I can't get them from iPlayer of course, it's just more difficult.

Hi, Scotty. I'm just up the road from you in St Jo, and I can confirm that you've got no chance of decent curry/a chippie in these parts! But can I make a suggestion? Try not to focus on what's not here from home - rather embrace what IS here that's not at home. Foodwise, in particular, you are in the BBQ capital of America - and it's phenomenal. Have you been to Jack's Stack in Overland Park yet? If so, you really need to get down there. And inhale a huge plate of Kansas City burnt ends. Mind-blowing. ;-)

Funny how you see things differently when you've been gone a while (I've not been back to Blighty once since I arrived stateside nearly 5 years ago) because I'd gladly trade some of the English wind and rain for the ###### arctic bollocks we're currently dealing with here. United KingdomWhat parts of English culture will you/do you miss?

Interesting read, this topic. I'm English and have been here for 5 years. And I can honestly say I miss very little about the UK. Some things, but not much. Because for everything I miss from home, there's a perfectly adequate (and usually better) substitute here.

Sure, I miss a proper local pub - but I sure as hell don't miss standing 4-deep at the bar trying to get served at last orders. I LOVE the table service at American bars (and the sports bars are just the nuts). I miss fish 'n' chips from a proper chippy - but the proper, hand patted burgers made from freshly ground beef you get here make the skinny, frozen patties on offer at home look pitiful. I miss our football - in the sense of physically being able to go to a game - but we get more games on TV here than you do at home. And I've come to love the American version. And whilst the fans of opposing teams sitting together kinda takes the tribalism out of things, the pre-match tailgating is fantastic - can you imagine tailgating at a West Ham/Chelsea game!!!???? Somebody mentioned butter - Land 'o' Lakes will fill your dairy needs just as well as Lurpak, trust me. And as for Salt 'n' Vinegar crisps, yes, Lays make them. In humongous bags. And they look/taste just like Walkers. I'd also recommend another Lays product - Stax. They're like Pringles except better. And the Salt 'n' Vinegar ones are awesome.

Something else I don't miss about home - motoring expenses. You can shove paying $9-a-gallon where the sun don't shine! I drive a 5.6 litre, V8 pickup truck here - the fuel costs alone would bankrupt me at home. And I get to drive my truck on big, long, wide, (comparatively) empty highways here in the Midwest (as opposed to shitty, windy, little B-roads at home). And somewhere to live? Here (I'm about an hour North of Kansas City, MO) $100,000 (so what, about 60k English?) gets you a detached (oh, how my American friends laugh at that) 3 bed place with a basement in an acre of land. Name me ANYWHERE in the UK where you get that kind of bang for your housing buck!

There are some downsides to living here, of course. Yes, the healthcare is an issue. Not the standard of care you receive (and the promptness with which its delivered) but the deductibles/co-pays. I have insurance through work. It runs me about $70-a-month. But it's an 80/20 policy (which is the norm these days) and the plan only picks up the 80% after I've met the annual deductible of $1,000. And then I'm on the hook for more until annual -of-pocket maximum is reached (about $3,500 in my case).

What I simply can't ###### stand most of all though, is the GLUT of God/Jesus bollocks. Seriously, it's a nightmare. And the rank hypocrisy! I used to think I was conservative, politically speaking, until I moved out here. Now I realize just how ultra-liberal (by American standards) I really am. The conservative (Republican) movement is intrinsically linked to organized religion, specifically Christianity in a bazillion different forms. And you'd better believe you're going to hell in a handcart unless you're A) White B ) Straight C ) Wealthy D) Accepting of Christ and E ) Go to "my" church, mister!!!!  Awful!

But I have to say that, all in all, the pros of living stateside far outweigh the cons. I'm happy here, and have every intention of spending the rest of my life here. My advice to any of you embarking on this journey is rather than pine about the things you miss from home, to embrace the culture of your new home. As a guy, I found the easiest way to do that was through sport. Yes, absolutely I took the pi$$ out of baseball and referred to it as "rounders." Now I can't wait for the new season to start. Yes, I derided American football as "rugby for poofs." Now, if The St Louis Rams lose (and they frequently do) I'm genuinely pi$$ed off for the rest of the week!

Life really is what you make it, folks. Especially for people in our situation. Enjoy it!

Damian PMaleEngland2013-12-12 11:41:00
United KingdomHow long???

Sorry to be entirely predictable here, but there really is no definitive answer to your question. Some people can have the visa in hand after a few months. Others over a year. Most folks somewhere in between.

On the basis that your application is straightforward (i.e. devoid of any time consuming legal issues) then anywhere between 4-to-10 months. Really can't give you anything more concise than that. Best thing for you to do is peruse the various timelines. In my personal case, the I-129 was sent off in January and I had the visa in hand towards the end of October - so around 9 months. Some folks who filed around the same time as me were done in half that time (back in '08 when I filed, Vermont were ploughing through cases at break-neck speed while California was more pedestrian - I was with California.)

The "multitudes" to whom you refer were denied entry for a whole host of reasons I'm sure (including misuse of the VWP) but that doesn't alter the fact that K visa application information is not available to POE immigration officials on their airport terminals.

I understand completely and agree with what you said but there is no listening problem. To close your sentence with "there's nothing to worry about" is incredibly "blanket" in nature and could be easily misunderstood.

Fair enough, then I shall clarify said statement:

Provided that the OP's wife doesn't abuse the VWP, and sticks to the ground rules I mentioned in an earlier post, then it's extremely unlikely that she will have anything at all to worry about.

I'm not married yet, we're going through the K1 process and I went to visit twice, with no problems whatsoever. But I did not mention my fiance and I was not asked about him, so I supposed they didn't know about the process. It's really up to you, when I went I knew that was a possibility I'd be denied entry, but since I knew it wouldn't jeopardize my K1 I just took my chances, cause we couldn't deal with the distance. Why would she need a visa to visit you when Denmark is a participating country in the VWP scheme?

because, as the previous reply noted, immigration fears she might be trying to stay here permanent before she receives her visa.

Well I can only tell you the score from my own personal perspective, and that was that I had absolutely no issues whatsoever going to and from America whilst applying for my visa. Many other VJ'ers have also come and gone with no issues at all. Do you or your wife feel that U.S. immigration should have any particular reason to suspect that she'll try and stay? If not, I'd respectfully suggest that you've nothing to worry about, provided that you follw a few simple ground rules:

1) Make sure that she only visits for a few weeks at a time
2) Leave at LEAST 3 months before she attempts to visit again, and try not to use the VWP any more than twice a year.
3) When she does visit, tell her to make sure she's got plenty of evidence tying her to her home country (letter from employer, rental agreement, mortgage statement etc...)
