CanadaInterview in Montreal January 22, 2013
Get there early and be first in line. I think that will be the best way to avoid a longer wait outdoors.

When I interviewed in April, the kids came up to the interview windows with me. The first woman, where we handed in our documents, barely even acknowledged the kids at all. The second one asked the kids a few questions, like how old they were. It wasn't very "interview-y" at all. They'll stay with you the whole time.

There's a vending machine in the waiting area. If your kids are anything like mine, take some change. They amused themselves during the wait-time by selecting snacks and munching. :)

Good luck!

CanadaQuestions... need clarification...
Maybe it depends on the state, but I moved to California and applied for my SSN in my married name without any trouble at all. I arrived here on Saturday, got married on Tuesday, picked up my marriage certificate on Wednesday and went straight to the SSN office the same day to apply in my married name. The card was in my hands a week later with my married name on it. I filed my AOS papers 3 weeks later.

Maybe, like everything else government'ish, it just depends on the person you happen to be dealing with and whether they are having a good day or not. It's a ####### shoot, I think.

CanadaOne simple tax question
If you get an answer, please come back and post your findings. I feel the same way... I'm no dummy. I got through the immigration paperwork just fine, but trying to find information from CRA is like reading a different language!
Good luck!

CanadaTravel health insurance for OHIP covered Ontario resident in laws
Manulife Financial (coverme.com) provides travel insurance to Canadians with health issues. They covered me, and I have cancer. It's not as cheap as some plans for healthy people, but it's not crazy expensive either. The last time I used them, I think it was in the range of $200 for myself and my 2 kids, for a month-long stay in the US.
The thing is, cancer is still a pre-existing condition, so if your mother-in-law has a cancer-related issue while she's visiting you, she's still not covered by her insurance. If she gets in an accident, though, or falls ill otherwise, she'd be covered by the insurance.

ETA: wherever they get insurance, make sure they read all the fine print first. It took me a while to find an insurance company that didn't state somewhere in the details that if you have advanced cancer or are currently in treatment (basically) don't even bother applying because they wouldn't cover you at all.

Canadacanada people

how wow so its much faster than i tought once u get married and send the i485 as well as work adjustment? And what do you think of the adjustement- did u find work. do you miss your family, did you make friends? Also did u went back to ontario while waiting for your green card? How old are you? My email is xxxxx if you want to discuss about it :)

The AOS stage was pretty easy. We just followed the guides here on VJ and collected the items required. I actually haven't looked for work yet, so I can't answer that part.
We planned a trip back to Ontario as soon as we got our travel authorizations, but it turned out that by the time we were traveling, we had our green cards in hand anyway. (Note -- something I did not know... if you want to travel after your AOS interview but before you get the green card, you need a special stamp in your passport. The AP document is useless after the interview.)

I miss my family a bit, but we skype a couple of times per week, so it's not too bad. My family and my life is here now. :)

Good luck to you!

Canadacanada people
I'm from Ontario and moved to California on a K-1. I went through the Montreal consulate last year. I POE'd in September, got married in October, filed AOS paperwork in November, and had my work authorization in January and green card in February. Pretty smooth sailing, once I finally got here. Happy to answer any specific questions if you have some.

Canadawhen did u give up your CDN residency?
Interesting tidbit for those in Ontario. I just got off the phone with the Ministry of Transportation. California did not make me hand over my Ontario license when I got my new license here. The lady on the phone said that the states are supposed to do an "exchange" program with the license, but since they didn't take mine, if I want, I can send it in and request a refund of the licensing fees I paid in Ontario, since my license isn't set to expire for another 9 months. It might be nice to get some money back somewhere in this costly process!

CanadaDesperately need help! Montreal interview

In my experience, if there's any way to reschedule the interview until after the stepson's medical is done, that is the way I would go.

I had issues with my medical last year and it was not complete at the time of my interview. The medical stuff was all dealt with and sent to Montreal in July -- it was the end of September before they finally issued my visa. A loooong wait, let me tell you.

Just my 2 cents.  Good luck to you!

CanadaPacket 3 Checklist - Montreal

Thanks CA-Dreamer, that's greatly appreciated. Did you wait for receiving packet 3 before sending all the documents they required at this stage ? Do we need a letter to book an appointment in order to perform the medical examination ?

I called DOS a few times and as soon as they told me that packet 3 had been sent out, I went to the Montreal web site, double-checked the information I had gathered, and sent it off to Montreal. I sent packet 3 over a week ago. You don't need to wait to receive it. You just have to confirm that it has been sent out to you.

I'll be calling DOS again tomorrow to see if P3 has been received and Packet 4 sent out. As far as I understand, once they say P4 is sent, you can schedule the interview. And, again as far as I understand, you need to have an interview date before you can schedule the medical exam.

Again, hope that helps.

CanadaPacket 3 Checklist - Montreal
I sent in my Packet 3 last week. They have very recently updated the Montreal web site and it seems the documents are a bit different now. Since the new "appointment checklist" is what they offer now, that's what I printed and sent in with my package. There's no place to sign or date it or anything. I just printed it and put it in with the rest of my documents to show that I had read it (and kept a copy for myself for reference, of course). All the items on it are the same as the old checklist, by the way.

Hope that helps.

Visa was issued on Sept 17. Got notice this evening that it is finally with Loomis, so it should be in my hands on Monday -- 1 week, exactly, from issuance.

Wahoo! This is great to see! I'm happy for you, but also happy (for me) to see your timeline too. I've been figuring (and lamenting) approx. 5 months from the ever-elusive NOA2 to interview with Montreal, but look at you... just about 3 months! Yay! Your post has just put the biggest smile on my face!

All the best for the interview. Thanks for the update!

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsRUDE USCIS agent

Really, there is no point to the USCIS having customer service reps. They have no information to give you, have no access to your casefile and simply read from a script. You'd be better off buying one of those old "magic 8 balls". Remember them? You ask it a question and the answer appears in the window...

 Beautifully put. So true!

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsDear CSC, can you please get your SHhhh*t together
*waves* I'm an August filer with CSC.

Sure, of course we'd all like our approvals ASAP, but do you really think that calling and bugging the **** out of them will help? Especially when people who sent in their petitions 2 months ahead of us are still waiting too?
Seriously, if I worked at CSC, every time someone called to nag about being a few days past the 5-month guideline, I'd move their file 1 spot closer to the bottom of the pile.

It will happen when it happens. There are many MANY people who have been waiting much longer than us.

Now, I will admit, if all the other August filers had their approvals and I was still waiting, I'd definitely be getting on the phone, but until then? No way. This process could easily take close to a year (or more) before it's all done. Life is too short. I absolutely hate being away from my fiance, but there is no way I am going to waste a year of my life constantly checking timelines and progress and calling people who have no more control over my petition/file than I do.

Step away from your computer. Go *live*! The time will pass before you know it.

For air travel, the first place I always check is www.kayak.com. You enter the departure and arrival cities/airports and the dates you would travel, and it gives you all the options with all the flight details.

I hope that helps.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsMost recent NVC case numbers.......timeline?
Approved Jan 12, received at NVC and case number assigned on Jan 20. I'm planning to call tomorrow to see if it has left for the consulate yet. Fingers crossed.

Sorry to hear they don't have you logged yet. Like most else in this process, there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to how they do things.

Email first, then I immediately went to check the site and it showed there too.
My USC fiance didn't ever get text notification, even though he signed up for it.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsWaiting for my divorce to go through before I can even START!
I was in the same boat, separated for ages but never seemed to get around to the divorce paperwork and then had to wait for it to get moving on the visa stuff. Get everything prepared and ready to go, so that when you get final documentation for your divorce, all you need to do is make a copy (or several!), put a copy in the envelope with your other petition paperwork and send it on its way.

Good luck!

Frostiana, you are my new hero! I'm planning to go thru Dr. Seiden in Toronto too. Everything I've read says you need to have your interview date to book an appointment, so I didn't even bother trying.
Super fantastic! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'll call them tomorrow!

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsUggh Montreal I curse you for your stupid system
I'm right there with you Moe. It would also be nice if we could get our medical done before the appointment is actually booked. At least it would be something we could do to move in the right direction.

I really don't understand why, when every embassy is run by the US government and staffed by US people, are the rules and procedures so different for each embassy? It makes me nutty to see people in other parts of the world who have their medical and interview done and visa in hand within a couple of weeks of the NOA2, and we are stuck in limbo-land here for months. (I'm happy for everyone who gets their visa, of course! ... but frustrated and jealous too).

Anyway... they've got to open up some soon. Waiting (not so patiently) right along with you. Hang in!

ps. you probably meant to post this in the K1 section, insteal of IR/CR-1?
