US Citizenship General DiscussionN-400 JANUARY 2012 FILERS

Did the early biometrics in a totally different city (and state!) Atlanta instead of San Francisco - no problemo we just walked right in
now the waiting game for the appointment interview begins!!

Wow, I didn't know you could do that either. Interesting to know.

Email received from USCIS yesterday (2/14/2012) informing me they have sent me the letter for my fingerprinting date.
Sounds good to me!

Yay! Glad that things are moving along for you.

Returned home today and found my interview letter waiting in my mailbox (had our mail held and delivered today). My interview is for March 19th, same as Pandawars. Guess we are running the same kind of timeline. My office doesn't do same day oaths, either. But it looks like SoCal has dates for Oath ceremonies on March 22nd and then a date in April and May. I'm guessing the earliest date I'll be offered will be April.

DAndy, I'm sorry you've still not heard anything. I hope you receive something soon!

Hey everyone. Currently on vacation, so I've not been able to get online as much as usual. But I just checked in on the USCIS website aaaand...

"Your N400, APPLICATION FOR NATURALIZATION is now scheduled for interview. You will receive a written notice with a time and place for your interview. You should receive this notice within 14 days. If you do not receive this notice within 14 days from February 8, 2012, please call customer service at 1-800-375-5283 for further assistance. If you move, please use our Change of Address online tool to update your case with your new address."

Looking forward to getting home in a few days and hopefully my interview date letter will be there when I get back, or at least not far behind. For what it's worth, I've been a PR since Sept 2006 (adjusted from K-1 Visa). So I've been eligible to be a Citizen for a few years now.

notscenenough, I had a quick peek in the December thread. There is a poster there who has this timeline:

|Sent.....|ChkCashd.|NOA......|Fprints..|Int Ltr..|Intview..|Oath.....|FieldOffice.........|
|12/08/11.|12/13/11.|12/13/11.|01/09/12.|01/24/12.|02/27/12.|--/--/--.|San Bernardino,CA|

This is my field office. So maybe they are just a quiet field office/more efficient/higher levels of staff? But it looks like they have processed this poster through pretty quickly. Should have moved to the 909, yo ;).

Agrhhhhhh. I'm not happy. Should have stayed in LA until the immigration issues are over with. NYC office sucks.
So, I'm going to be sitting around in this thread for another 5+ months, while you ride into the Santa Monica sunset with your blue passport in hand. Unfair.

Notscenenough, I'm actually out in the I.E., I keep forgetting to update my field office to SanBo. I WISH I was in the Santa Monica area, it's beautiful! I'm sorry NYC is taking their sweet time with scheduling. Fingers crossed it will happen soon for you. I can understand getting frustrated about it.

looks like this just puts more evidence on the belief - N400 moves at its own pace, early FP or things like that (like frontloading evidence etc etc) doesnot make it move any faster.

I think so too. Pandawars and I were scheduled for FPs on the same date. They went in early, I went in at the time specified on my letter. But hey, it can be helpful to get it over and done with if you have other plans for the time that you're actually scheduled for. Rather than sending the letter back and waiting even longer to do biometrics.

OMG!!!! Congrats Huffy!!! That's super fast!

I know, I couldn't believe my eyes. I wasn't going to check, but I figured I was at my computer so why not? And there it was. I wasn't expecting an update of any kind for several more weeks.

Lol  congrats HuffyTheSlayer!

Thanks pinktulips2012!

It might be that you don't have to do the bio since it has been less than a year. It happens to more people, maybe to you as well. I hope it is the same in my case, I filed about a month before you and haven't heard a thing since my NOA yet. Also doubting if I should call since the 30 day mark has been passed :(

I would call if it's been over 30 days to check and see. Just in case. You could be one of the lucky ones who don't have to re-do it.

I did my fingerprints today. All went well. I was there 45 mins before my appointment and they were just finishing with the one other person in the office and by the time I'd filled out my form they were done and ready for me. I have to say the lady who did my prints was the best I've had so far. Previously I've had techs who've yanked my fingers about while telling me to "relax my fingers". Well it's hard to do that when you're tugging on my fingers!

But all went smoothly. Now onto the next stage. I wonder who will be the first January filer to get an interview date?

Gotta say guys, this last bit of the journey makes me more anxious than anything before that. Just because it's the last push, I really really really want it to end soon. But since I'm filing from NYC, I'm probably looking at 6+ more months. Bummer.

I totally agree, notscenenough. I feel that same anxiousness, even though there is no reason really to feel so. I guess it's just one of those things. We finally want to finish our journey once and for all.

US Citizenship General DiscussionN-400 JANUARY 2012 FILERS

Hi,

I'm in a bit of trouble.

I filed N-400 on January 5 to Dallas Office, received NOA on January 9th. Since I had lost Green Card, I also filed I-90 around January 7th. I have not received biometrics appointment yet. I see that people have been getting biometrics appt in 2-3 weeks.

Should I be concerned ?

RVC

RVC, do you have your NOA receipt number? If so, you can go over to USCIS.gov and type it in there and you will be able to see the status of your application. If they have mailed you a biometrics notice, it will say so and tell you what date they sent it. If it doesn't say that they've mailed your notice then you may want to find a number to call and check on your application. I have no experience with the I-90 form so I've no idea if that would make the process longer or not.

What's going on???? WHY HAVENT I RECEIVE MY LETTER YET FOR FP?????...
Congrats on those who got their biometric letter!!!
One step closer

Raul Y Karla, I think that Arizona is just slower. I sent them my package before you and I am also still waiting for my biometrics notice (as is DAndy, who sent his package the day before me). I checked my receipt number over on USCIS.gov and it says they mailed it on Monday. So I am hoping that maybe today will be the day that letter lands in my mailbox. Maybe you can check your receipt number and see if it says that they have mailed out a biometrics notice to you yet, or not? Either way, try not to worry too much (I know it's hard not to). It will get to you soon.

Probably a good thing for some people who've Naturalized to carry with them these days what with laws like they put in place with AZ. Although the only place I've been asked about my status has been the DMV and my employer. But that's probably because I'm British.

Congratulations, Trk393! I really appreciate you sharing your experience, it was really helpful. I hope to be going through this in a few months time so it's great to know what will happen. We were thinking of bringing our son, but it doesn't sound like that would be a good idea with all the waiting around, etc. So we will start to make other plans for him.

US Citizenship General Discussionoath ceremonies time frame

thanks for all the information you provided. But i've another question that do u knw if santa ana office has same day oath ceremony (the same of interview) ?????????

No idea. But I think that most of the Southern California offices send you to the Naturalization ceremonies that happen at the LA Convention Center (so not same day). Brother Hesekiel kindly provided you with a link above.

I think your timeframe might be a bit tight. But like Brother Hesekiel said, you can always re-schedule your oath ceremony and go once you get back from your vacation.

How long does it take to get passport through expedited service????

Sonia, if it gets too close to your travel date and you don't have time to send off for your passport I think you can go in person and get a passport in a few days (for real emergencies they will do same day). Here's the information:

http://travel.state....encies_909.html

We needed to get a passport for our son when he was 6 weeks old as we needed to travel because of my grandmothers ailing health. We took a risk and went ahead and booked the tickets. Thankfully we made an appointment, submitted the paperwork and were told to return a few days later to pick up the passport.

Hope it all falls into place like you want it to!

Moreover i have checked oath ceremonies chart helding in los angeles. Acc. to which there would be ceremonies on 03/15/2012; 03/22/2012; 04/17/2012. Any ideas what could be mine as i have my interview on 03/06/2012.

I have no clue what date you might be given. But a thought did occur to me that once the interview was concluded and you were told if you were approved or not, that you might want to mention your trip to the interviewer and ask if there is a way they can request a date for you that would not clash with your travel date?

Would you also need a US Passport to travel if you take your oath before your trip? If so and you get a March date, you still might be cutting things close. Just some of the things I would consider.

US Citizenship General DiscussionTime as a Resident in a USCIS District or State

I would play it safe and wait another month. I understand you want this processed as fast as possible, but if they deny your application, you will lose both money and time.

I agree. If you go submit early and get denied because of it (there was someone here who was recently). Then surely you will be delaying getting your husband over by yet another 5-6 months. While it must be horrible to be living apart, surely one month is a small sacrifice to make to ensure you don't get denied and have to add half a year more to your wait to have your hubby by your side Stateside. Just my 2 cents.

US Citizenship General Discussiontest questions asked

For those of you who have recently just passed their interview.

what test questions did they ask you? if you can remember.

I just had my interview yesterday, my IO just handed me the pre-printed sheet of questions and asked me to read and then answer the questions. Even though I got the first 6 correct, she had me read all the way to question 9. Like you, I was worried about learning the questions, but it turned out to be fairly easy. Do you have a smart phone (android or iPhone) or a tablet/iPad? If so, go and download a US Citizenship app. I did that and just went through the questions once a day a few weeks leading up and over the weekend I had my husband read the questions to me every evening. There were one or two that I would was a tiny bit hesitant on because I am terrible at memorising numbers, but I got those all correct too before we even started having my hubby test me each night.

I think at the beginning it looks more intimidating than it is. Judging by your flag, you most likely have English as a first language, so that's half your battle already won there. Don't worry (easier said than done), you'll learn them all just start having a read through of them.

US Citizenship General DiscussionReceipt Number

Yeah its been 5 days, but I'll wait.

Since you are a military spouse, I am wondering if that's why. Maybe the information is not yet processed within the online system State-side. Maybe for now you can call the USCIS military hotline and see if they can let you know if your status has changed.

US Citizenship General DiscussionBiometrics fee

Odds are against you for using your ROC biometrics as they are now taking photos for your naturalization. But even for some weird reason, they use your ROC biometric, still have to pay that 80 bucks. They say it cost them that much to retrieve them.

They, being the USCIS.

They also have to pay to store the information as well as to retrieve it. So that is why they say they keep your biometrics fee, even if you don't go and do new biometrics.

Sarah, as NickD said you will still have to pay the $80 biometrics fee regardless.

US Citizenship General DiscussionINTERVIEW TO OATH

thanks to Manufred,Ree& Huppytheslayer for ur reply
i know that all have diff timeline but was just getting an idea.
got email/txt message today :

Oath Ceremony
On April 5, 2012, we scheduled you for your oath ceremony and sent a notice providing the date, time, and location. If you move prior to the scheduled ceremony, please use our Change of Address online tool to update your case with your new address or call our customer service center at 1-800-375-5283

now i am

That is usually the way. You get news when you are most worried about how long things are taking.

Congratulations, you are basically done now. For what it's worth, it took 3 working days from that online message to receive my oath ceremony letter. But obviously, it depends on how fast your office mails them out and how fast your post office delivers.

US Citizenship General DiscussionINTERVIEW TO OATH

My interview was on March 21st, the oath letter was given at the end of the interview for the April 19th.
A friend had her interview at the same local office in the end of February, her oath letter was given also at the end of the interview for the beginning of March. Her oath ceremony was in different location than where will be mine.

Conclusion: The time between the interview and the oath totally depends on your location.

Agreed, Ree.

Posting the time it took from your interview and your oath is really not going to help people, certainly not without providing your local office AND your actual location. It just has too much variance. People are best off checking through the filing threads and seeing if there is someone with the same local office as them, hoping they also close to their location and seeing what their timeline looks/looked like.

US Citizenship General DiscussionHusband lost his job

I don't understand your post. The whole POINT of VJ is American's petitioning their foreign spouses... Personally neither my husband nor myself went LOOKING for an international relationship... just worked out that way. Gotta love the internet!

I agree with every word you said, Vanessa.

OP, don't add to your worries about your husband losing his job. It has no affect on his citizenship application. Otherwise how would people who didn't work ever naturalize, or people who didn't earn any income like stay at home mothers, etc. The only thing is that you may have save up to get his US Passport once naturalized, as should he wish to leave the country for vacation, emergency, etc. then he will need to do so on a US passport.

US Citizenship General Discussion2011 USCIS Statistics
Thank for sharing, an interesting read. I figured that Mexico would lead the field with Naturalization. But I was a little surprised that India took second spot over the Philippines. Very interesting to see stats for the regions, age and number of years as a LPR. Looking forward to seeing the stats for 2012 next year. I will have to show this to my co-workers, one was born in Mexico and the other in China. I think they'll find it quite interesting as well.

US Citizenship General Discussionname change at interview

so lets just say my name before i got married was maria jones and when i got married I said to myself I would have my name as Maria jones-smith (smith is my spouse's last name), and got my GC and SS card with that name (first name maiden name- married name).

Is the interviewer still going to ask you if you "want to change your name"??

when i read peoples interview experiences and what they were asked, the name change is one of them,
so are there people here that have gotten married to a U.S citizen but still go by their maiden name on thie GC and SS card? - I am referring to an immigrant female getting married to a male U.S citizen and so that is why the interviewer asks if that person wants to change their name???

I was asked as my IO went over my application, I said no I had already changed my name to my husbands when we married. But the thing you have to remember is not everyone applying for Naturalization got a green card through marriage, or their marriages might be dissolved.

An example is that in Mexico most people get given a first name, a middle name and then their mothers maiden name and their fathers name as last names. That's an awful lot of names and most people I've met from Mexico only end up using one of their last names, because forms and paper work here aren't designed for all those names. I know when my co-worker naturalized, she changed her name to her first name, middle name and her husbands last name and removed of her family names since her name was so long (she did not get her green card through marriage to her husband). It is now much easier for her when she fills out paperwork.

There are of course, a lot of other reasons someone might choose to change their name at naturalization, such as a woman who changed their mind about taking their spouses name after they had a child together. Not all cultures have women take their spouses name. This is their "birth" as US Citizens, so the government gives them the option of going by whichever name they feel most comfortable with.

US Citizenship General DiscussionGreen Card expires before Oath

I had my infopass appointment this week and after explaining my situation (international travel while my N-400 is been processed and GC expiring soon) the officer rubber stamped my passport and gave me a 1 year GC extension.

Thanks for sharing the outcome of your appointment, stinke.socke. I'm sure this thread will be helpful for any other people who have a similar situation to you in the future. Hope your case gets processed soon, so that you won't have to worry about GC validity anymore.

US Citizenship General DiscussionLose German Citizenship

DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!! DUAL IN HAND! Can not stress how greatful we are to all that helpped us in this processss...

Now we have a trip to Germany planned in June, does he need his american passort to travel or can we save the expense for now and still travel in and out with his German pass? hmmmm

Best of luck to all!

US Citizens are legally required to enter and exit the US with a US Passport. So your spouse will need to get a US passport.

US Citizenship General DiscussionGot my passport+passport card

Today I got my passport card in the mail. That completes my process. Now I have passport book + secondary passport book + passport card.

Now I am wating for my OCI from indian consulate. India does not allow dual citizenship so I have to surrender my indian passport and apply for the OCI card. It is an indian version of Green Card in India. It is expected to take another 60-90 days to get it and then I can travel freely to india.

In the mean time, since the weather is getting nice here, I am thinking of renting an RV and travel with family coast to coast and see the rest of the country.

It is a great experience and I can not beleive it I made it finally after waiting 32 years being in US. Good Luck too all of you who is waiting in the process to become USC.

Congratulations, ConcordUser. 32 years! You certainly deserve it. Enjoy your citizenship and all the rewards that come with it.

You may want to consider joining the April 2012 filiers (if you haven't already) and checking the previous months threads, that may give you a better idea of wait time for your office.

Calibound, if you have time, can you add a little more detail about what they said/arranged? It might help out other people who find themselves in similar situations in the future.

US Citizenship General DiscussionOath Ceremony Appointment Letter

Question to those who got their oath appointment letter already: What did your online status say before you got the letter? Did it update and tell you that a letter of appointment was sent? I'm always checking my online status to see if it has been updated.

Mine did. My timeline is in my signature. I don't think this happens for everyone though.
