Good question! Unfortunately there isn't a straight answer to it. People have reported not receiving any online updates after interview even if they received them before.

So here is what I gathered regarding interview:

An IO might tell you you're recommended for approval which means that if it is up to him/her you're approved but it could still mean somebody else has to sign off on it or has to research your case. I have not heard of anybody being denied after this comment unless they did something they shouldn't have done in the following weeks. Some people have reported they were given a letter with a "congratulations" box checked on it others were confused about this box not being checked. Sometimes people are send home with a piece of paper listing additional paperwork to be submitted.

Maybe some of the folks who had an interview can tell us more about this.

Thanks, ManuFred. I've actually had my interview. Got my "Congratulations you are recommended for approval" letter with the box ticked off. So I was technically approved, pending supervisor approval. I got put in line for oath scheduling, then was sent the letter for oath date. I am guessing when you are put in line for oath is when you are technically "approved" for Naturalization, but it is still possible to be turned down right up until you take the oath and get your certificate in hand. I was just wondering when most people were thinking of changing their "Filed for status", that appears under your name on the left hand side when you post here on VJ.

After the oath ceremony

I think I will be the same way, Ree. While I have no reason to not be approved and complete the oath ceremony on the day, but I guess I am a bit superstitious. And technically we really aren't approved until we go through the oath ceremony.

PS. I am hoping that Blessed is currently having her interview and will have good news shortly. :star:

Question for those of you whose office doesn't do same-day oath: When will you guys be switching your statuses to Naturalization (Approved)? When you are told you're recommended for approval at the interview? When you get the oath ceremony letter in hand? Or when you've taken the oath?

HuffyTheSlayerFemaleUnited Kingdom2012-04-10 12:20:00
US Citizenship General DiscussionN-400 JANUARY 2012 FILERS

I got an email on 2nd saying my interview is now scheduled and I will be getting the interview letter in mail. Today's 10th and I still haven't got the letter. How long did it take for the others to get the letter in mail.

For me, it's usually been about 3-4 working days between the email and receiving the letter. But it's been consistent that way. You can see that from my signature line. How long did it take for you to get your NOA from email notification to letter in hand? That might be a better idea. Or maybe your local office is slower at mailing out letters?

Nice :) good luck, hopefully you will get a quick date

Good luck to all the members with Interview this week - blessed (tomorrow), fuzzymiss and serenitynow (thursday).

That's so nice of you, DeathStrike. Hope the January 2012 Filers have a great week, all interviews going well and progress for a lot of the people who are waiting for interview date letters, oath ceremony dates, etc.

Got a frustrating email today that I have to go for FP now. I thought they waived it as it was taken within 15 months of filing application. It has been 3 months since I filed application and was expecting to see IL instead of this useless paper.

FRUSTRATING!!!

Ugh, that IS frustrating, but on the plus side, I think you'll probably get an interview scheduled fairly soon after. Plus like Blessed said, at least you know that someone looked at your filed recently.

Oh USA82 that sucks. I hope that once you get your fingerprints done everything else goes quickly.

In my news, I PASSED!!! Portland has same-day oath ceremonies but sadly D and I had work-things we couldn't miss this afternoon, so I'm in the queue for a new oath time. I'm so close to being done, I can't wait for all of the paperwork to be over. For anyone who wants to play the at home game, here are the questions I was asked:

Part A

1) What group of people was taken to America and sold as slaves?
2) Why did the colonists fight the British?
3) How many amendments does the Constitution have?
4) Who makes federal laws?
5) What is the name of the Vice President of the United States now?
6) What is the highest court in the United States?
7) What are two Cabinet-level positions?
8) Under our Constitution, some powers belong to the federal government. What is one power of the federal government?
9) What territory did the United States buy from France in 1803?
10) One other one I can't remember

Part B

Read "Who can vote?"
Write "Citizens can vote"

Yay! Congrats, Kathryn! It's a shame you weren't able to do the same day oath. But hopefully you'll get a date fairly quickly (if the offer same-day oath I'm guessing it won't be long at all).

Almost there :)
Got our interview letter today & will take same day oath.

Then only one more step....Passport Office for expedited service.
Then off to visit my wifes parents as they are in their 80's & 90's now....They too are counting the days :)
Good luck everyone!

 Great news! Glad your wife will be having a same-day oath.

Thank You
My wife is so excited.....She calls everyday from work at lunch
to ask me if it came :)
Today she got the answer she was hoping for.

I guess we are lucky here in Hawaii there is the same day oath option.
Especially since we need to fly over to that island for the interview.
It is nice to have one less trip. Also she just flew over this past Friday for her biometrics

I see our time table is very close to yours too!
Good Luck & Congrats!

I am guessing the fact that some of the Hawaii applicants don't live on the big island, like you and your wife, is why they offer the same-day oath. I think it's probably a bit much to expect people to fly over 3 times to go through the naturalization process.

US Citizenship General DiscussionN-400 JANUARY 2012 FILERS

Had my interview today. It was a great experienced, a stress free indeed! The entire process lasted less than 30 mins. The IO was nice and very professional. He verified all the information that was indicated on my application. He asked me 6 questions that I answered correctly.
Questions are:
What is one promise you make when you become a USC?
Who is the governor of your state now?
Where is the Statue of Liberty?
Name two U.S holidays.
What movement tried to end racial discrimination?
Who is the first president?

He gave me a piece of paper and asked me to read it.
"Who lives in the White House?"
He handed me another piece of paper and instructed me to write what he say.
" The President lives in the White House"

After that, he asked me: what do you think of the interview? I answered, I think I'm doing good. He said: do you think so? Or you do so? Lol!

He then printed the paper that says I'm recommended for approval. That's it! I'm looking forward to hear an update for my oath ceremony soon!

To the rest of January 2012 filers, good luck to all of you. Im hoping that you all have a good interview experience without any delay or unexpected problems that you might encounter.

Yay! Congratulations, Pinktulips! You are almost at the finish line now.

last few months I reviewed (not a lot of them actually from Jax), no. Orlando had some, so I guess my parents stand a small chance. Some of my relatives went through the Orlando office and nobody had same day oath.

What I heard about Jacksonville is sometimes they send people get to Gainesville or Tallahassee judges for oath - I guess I barely have any same day oath chance. Which is alright, if they put me in for Tallahassee - no 6hr drive.

That's a shame. I knew as well going in that I wouldn't have a same day oath as well, but like you I'm okay with that, so long as I get there eventually.

Thanks, DeathStrike. Congrats on your (and your parents) interview date. Does your office do same day oaths?

Congrats!!! Huffytheslayer

Thanks, Raul y Karla. I'm hoping you get your IL soon. I think it shouldn't be too much longer, but I am guessing LA has a lot of applicants to process.

Awesome news!!! Yay!

Wow yours went by really fast!

It did. But both of my co-workers naturalized last year and theirs went really fast too (although one of them was in the military at the time, so I don't know if that really counts. She naturalized in less that 2 months) so I know that my local office usually works pretty quickly. There was someone else with my local office in the December 2011 thread and they progressed pretty quickly too. Though they haven't come back to update since their Oath Ceremony date.

Well we are still side by side with you Miguel.
Same date for: in line, interview scheduled, letter received. And same interview date in Houston, TX. See you April 26...well depending on the time.

Copies and originals? I guess originals of whatever you sent plus anything else that comes to mind (original +photocopy.) They want to see the original with their own eyes, but can then put the photocopy in the file. If there's anything new you want to bring, providing a photocopy will allow you to have your original back.

Congrats on the progress Nich-Nick & Miguel! Another step closer for the January Filers.

I want to change my Filed for status to Naturalization (Approved), but don't want to tempt fate. So I think I will wait until I get my oath letter in hand. I am envious of those of you who had same-day oaths!

Well we had a little curve ball today thrown at us.....Hey not like we or anyone who has gone through this whole process is surprised by those anymore eh? :)

Anyway back on 2/28/12 we saw online we had been put in line for a interview....SO we assumed we did not need Biometrics because my wife just had them in 12/11.
But today the letter came & we were all exciting thinking interview & Oath but.........It is a paper for biometrics.

Kind of a bummer because we live on an outer island of Hawaii so it is an additional $$ to fly over to Honolulu Oahu for a 5 minute finger printing....again
Third time I think? because the original...2year then the 10 year & now this. I mean do they really think I am sneaking in another person? :)

Ah well nothing to it but to do it I guess. But we will be soooooo happy when we are done once & for all.

Updated my line to show finger prints instead of waived.

Good Luck to all!

Ugh, I bet that's a pain in the #######, manias (as we would say in the UK ). Sorry you weren't able to skip them and save yourself some $$$. Still another step closer.

Hi everyone! Checking in. Security at the field office were very nice and let us in an hour early. Not that that helped any! I ended up being interviewed an hour after my appointment (this was after I went up and asked if they knew how far behind they were, I think they misplaced my letter since they took my greencard and took several minutes to get back to me). Nothing really every goes smoothly for me and my hubby. We always end up getting missed on appointment lists etc. It seems to be our niche in life.

Anyway, I finally got called for my interview. It was fairly quick. I was asked to swear I'd tell the truth. I did. The Officer checked my greencard and my California ID card and then they went through my form with me. For my writing section I had to write "We pay taxes". Then she had me read my own questions and answer them to cover both the reading and the questions section in one go. I got them all correct, but she let me get to question 9 before she stopped me. Then she told me I passed and that I should receive my oath letter soon, she gave me a form that said I passed and some information about the oath ceremony.

Hey everyone. On the west coast here, so it will still be a few hours before I leave, let alone before I start the interview. Glad that we already have one success under our belt for today. I will probably be the last to report in after my interview. But I will stop by and let you know how it went.

Congrats, Pandawars! And best of luck Rodgieslove!

:D Well if it is any consolation, we haven't actually received anything yet. Our notice at the USCIS website changed to that message that everyone is getting, but apparently it just means that you are "in line" and who knows how long it will be until an interview is scheduled. Nothing in our mailbox yet.

I wonder if that message changes once you are actually *scheduled*?

We still may be at the same oath ceremony - especially since they only happen every ~ 3 weeks! On another note, I was reading some reviews of the ceremony @ the Paramount Theater. Every review I read said there were ~1100 people from 100+ countries. Fun!

Once you are scheduled the message does change. It tells you your interview has been scheduled and that you will receive your letter in the mail soon. Call if you don't get it in 14 days (I think).

Yay! Congrats, Pink. Looks like you have a whole month to read up for your civics test ( I was just glancing over things again today).

Y'all crack me up! Know what... we should throw a virtual celebration when all this is over and maybe send USCIS some flowers or something!!! :D Y'all remember the ROC journey? Man, I'd never been stressed in my life like that time! lol

I don't recall being too nervous or stressed about ROC, but I was glad to get my 10 year GC in hand and know that I didn't have to deal with the USCIS for 10 more years if I didn't want to (man, how tempting...!). Finally decided this January that I was ready to hop back on the USCIS train for one final journey, so to speak :P. To continue the bad analogy, hopefully within a few months I will never have to travel USCIS Rail again.

Haha! Sorry for the unexpected sex change!

Here's a link for the Military forum, if you want to check it out: http://www.visajourn...ted-discussion/

True! I checked it out. They should have like similar threads on it for monthly timelines. Well that's just my thoughts. Hey guys, are y'all brushing up on the civics questions? I was checking out N400 Jan 2011 forum and it seems like we are moving faster than they did! Check this out...

http://www.visajourn...s/page__st__660

I'm looking through an app on my phone every few days to refresh my memory. But I'll mostly study for it when March starts.

Yes, I still want Ruffie in this thread with us, because he's one of us (chants "One of us! One of us!"), but just thought the Military forum might help give him some answers about how his timeline might go and who he can contact for special help, etc.

Hey Ruffie, I just noticed the Admin recently started a military immigration forum, you might be able to find out what other military timelines are like. Just wanted to let you know, in case you hadn't seen it.

OMG!!!! Check out this timeline... fastest I've seen so far...

It seems mine is moving fairly fast...
01/07/12* N400 mailed express mail
01/11/12* Delivered to Phoenix, AZ office
01/12/12* USCIS email/sms confirmations received
01/13/12* Check cashed
01/17/12* Receipt received
01/21/12* USCIS FP email received
01/25/12* FP letter received
01/31/12* FP Appointment/Done
02/04/12* Online Status changed to Testing and Interview
02/07/12* IL received
02/29/12* Interview
xx/xx/12* Oath Ceremony

This looks a lot like my co-workers timeline. She applied for her citizenship through the military (army reserves) and she was a citizen within 1.5 months. I suspect this person is also military or has a military spouse and lives in the US, perhaps.

ETA: Hmm, maybe not. Military applications go through Nebraska. Maybe there was an expedite request? Or I guess they just got super lucky!

Mine also falls under 15 month window. Does it mean I would not get FP notice and direct letter for interview?

Please confirm.

Thanks

USA, it seems to be random as far as we can tell. There are some people who don't have to re-do their biometrics, but most people do. There is really no way to tell if you may be one of the lucky few.

PS. Glad that we didn't scare you off!

Oh and I found an email address for the military point of contact in Nebraska so I sent an email there ref. the average processing time for overseas naturalization.

:thumbs:My co-worker was in the reserves when she naturalized. She got an email from a CO very quickly after applying and got emails from the same CO every step of the way. She was in the US though and active military. But hopefully you will get a helpful CO who can check on your status and see what kind of timeline you might expect from Frankfurt.

Did you try the military hotline number as well?

That's what I was thinking of. If you don't get help via email, hopefully you can speak to a human being on the phone.

I probably would agree that check cashed isn't that important but why would one's eligibility be important. It's kind of redundant to say when your eligibility date is as most people apply when they are eligible or when they are nearing eligibility. That is black and white with firm dates. You're either eligible, within the 90 day eligibility on the 3 or 5 year, or you're not eligible. All the other dates on the timeline are variable. People who visit these forums to see the timeline are looking for average case processing times from filing to oath and how much time each step takes. I don't see how seeing someone's eligibility really helps. Again, it's just my opinion.

I agree with Pandawars on this one. While the check cashed column is not very important, I think that it helps with the initial anxiety to see how quickly people's applications are starting to enter the system. Kind of like a comfort thing.

Know what I think... we should have "like" buttons on here too. :D I keep trying to find one every time I come across a post I like. :)

Blessed in the bottom right-hand corner there's a little green + sign. I think that's the "like" button here.

3/20 is the date of anniversary.

This (column about adding 'eligible on' date) has been in suggested in this very thread. Will take some formatting to do though on that list to make it one line.

I think I made my post while you posted. Rather than another column, how about we just change the font colour for the people who were already eligible when they applied to green?

HuffyTheSlayerFemaleUnited Kingdom2012-02-16 13:56:00
US Citizenship General DiscussionN-400 JANUARY 2012 FILERS

Death Strike--what is the date you are eligible to naturalize? Has that date passed yet or did you apply 90 days in advance? What the list doesn't show is that all the ones moved into interview ready/interview have already passed their date when they can legally naturalize. Wondering if you are to your date yet?

That might be interesting to know. Maybe we can just change people's name color or something if they were already eligible to naturalize when they applied (I'm thinking green, or something)? Rather than adding another column.

Let's add the column for that info to the list, I am sure it would be very helpful. And also how about adding the columns about dates of receiving "placed in line" and "interview scheduled" emails as well?

While that might be helpful, I'm not sure if they would make the list too complicated for people with smaller computer screens. On my little netbook at home the list doesn't line up nice and neatly across the screen, it doubles up. It's hard to read and compare the dates that way.

I just worry that it might be too much information to fit on the list, KWIM?

Out of curiousity, where can I find out how long the average processing time is for overseas naturalizations? On the USCIS site I can only pick field offices and obviously none of them are in charge of me and I'm just wondering?

I had a quick google search and couldn't really find anything :(. I don't know if you can call the service center you submitted your application to or if there's a contact number on your NOA you can call? Is your spouse in the Military? If so, you might be able to find out a contact number specifically for military/their spouses applications.

Did the early biometrics in a totally different city (and state!) Atlanta instead of San Francisco - no problemo we just walked right in
now the waiting game for the appointment interview begins!!

Wow, I didn't know you could do that either. Interesting to know.

Email received from USCIS yesterday (2/14/2012) informing me they have sent me the letter for my fingerprinting date.
Sounds good to me!

Yay! Glad that things are moving along for you.
