United KingdomBoard Silence for 2 mins
I closed my laptop and turned off the TV, then had my two minute silence.

I observed it, and will probably do the same again when it hits 12 here on Mountain Time.

United KingdomU.S. citizen or Permanent Resident
Like many of the others here, I'm going to apply for Citizenship as soon as I can, because my Husband and I would like to go and live over in the UK. But would also like the option of returning to the US without having to go through the hassles of the USCIS again. We'd also like all of our (ourselves and kids when we have them) to have the same dual-citizenship. :)

Yeah, I used it to call my cell phone earlier, to see if it worked. I'm definately going to be calling some people this weekend.

*ponder* I wonder if it will be free calls to mobile phones.

United KingdomHas anyone got a police report in less than 40 days?
I don't exactly recall. But I think it took about 38 days. 30 at the bare minimum.

United KingdomVirgin Train
I second Boiler's recommendation of the train, if you can get it. Then getting a black cab at Euston to the embassy. I don't recall seeing any black cabs around the embassy. But I'm sure you could either call on a mobile for one, if you have a mobile. Or ask someone at the embassy if they could call for one for you. I'm sure they'd oblige. :)

If you can't get the Virgin train, then I think you could probably get a black cab that would take you to Heathrow airport, since most taxi firms will offer a service like that. Although it might be different in your area of the company. Then from Heathrow you coulf get a black cab to the embassy. But this would probably be more expensive than getting a Virgin train.

I hope it works out for you, 1000 pounds is outrageous to expect for taking someone down to London, IMO. If you can arrange for the Virgin train I'd say go for it. They're pretty nice trains, from what I've heard. Never had the chance to use one before.

United KingdomReactions to you accent!
Yay! So glad to see someone else who's been asked if they were German. NO clue where they got that from, though.

I've tried the same thing, Mark, ordering using the menu number and had the same reaction from the cashier. I also have the same water/wadder problem. It gets really annoying sometimes.

Greenland ( I don't even know what language they speak there)

I believe most people there speak Greenlandic as their first language (about 87% of the population are of inuit origin) and with a small percentage of the people speaking Danish, since it's a Danish territory. Both are official languages.

No idea why anyone would think you were Greenlandic, though.

United KingdomGoing to an English BBQ, recipe ideas and can we get golden syrup in the grocery store?
Nicola, the only place I can get Golden Syrup here is at the British food store. Maybe there's one near you? Might be worth googling for one. :)

Also, I forgot to mention, when you get a MoneyCorp trading account they'll send you out a Privelege Card which will give you commission-free transactions at any of their retail branches (Gatwick, Stanstead and Central London), and you'll get 1% improvement of the airport branch rates. :) (However the rates are better in London, due to the fact that they take a commission, whoever with the card, that's not a problem)

But it could be handy if you need to change some dollars at the airport. Also, everyone will treat you fantastically when you show the card (not that they wouldn't anyway). Hehe.

United KingdomTransferring funds

Before I got the chance to call them, they called me. :)
It sounds like it won't be an issue, as he said you can send money from & to any account, so it doesn't have to be in my name.
He was really helpful & I'm in the process of setting up a trading facility.

Hehe, aren't they awesome? They really are so, so helpful. :) They used to call me just when I was about to call them, also. Hmm, I really should change my name with them. My account is still in my maiden name.

United KingdomTransferring funds
Not sure, Peter. As I transferred my money when I was in the US, into an account where I was the primary card holder. If you give MoneyCorp a call I'm sure they'll be able to answer it for you. But having worked for them I'm sure the answer is most likely to be yes, you can. :)

Hehe. I'll third the recommendation for Moneycorp. I used to work for them back when I was in the UK. :) So I know that they're a good company.

I also transferred my money over from the UK to US with them. They were great to deal with, and they give you a great rate, I'd recommend you get your fiance to give them a call.

United KingdomMedical in Scotland
Hmm, I really wouldn't know. How did you contact them? Did you call the helpline, or did you email?

If you didn't email, I would try sending an email explaning the situation. Since the helpline are pretty much a call center in Scotland who have a fixed set of responses to give to the people that call in. But if you email, you'll get a reply from someone who works in the embassy (eventually).

I believe that the only place you can get the medical done in the UK is London, now.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

Maybe she could get a cheap flight down to one of the London airports (both Gatwick and Heathrow have express trains that will get her into London and back to the airport reasonably quickly)?

The only place I've heard of that gives out temp EAD on a fairly regular basis is JFK. However even going through JFK won't guarantee you a temp EAD.

United Kingdomchicken pox jab
Hmm, when I did my medical I had a sheet with a table on the back showing what vaccinations I needed and varicella was ticked, but it was also noted that this was not available in the UK. So I'm guessing they thought that he would have checked that out already and known that he had to get it done in the US (although like Mags, I was asked had I had chicken pox as a child, and I said yes, so they said I didn't need the vaccination). It was also 180 quid when I did the medical. So there's a little something to be thankful for.
