United KingdomWhat kind of music do all you people like???

Our wedding song was Highland Cathedral on the piano because we couldn't find a piper in Central Pennsylvania :P

But at our reception we looped Metallica and Alkaline Trio CD's (metallica before they sucked :P)

Annie came down the aisle to Highland Cathedral. We had a mix of everything for the reception

If you were in Los Angeles, I could direct you to at least two stores that sell Irn-Bru.

BA is a having a super-cheap 3 day sale at the moment - just bought flights to London from LA for $500 including tax -- doesn't get much better than that. Travel before April, I think.

Wow that is good! Shame I'm travelling at the beginning of May really. At the moment it's $709 LAX - LHR return for May, but I'm keeping an eye on it for the next few weeks until I book. This is all from Orbitz.com. I might just pay the extra $20 and fly Virgin :) Not a huge fan of American Airlines...

Hands down, Virgin is better and worth the 20.

I am a member of both flying clubs and fly both. You may want to call Virgin and see if they can match the price.

I just booked my flight for the end of this month. my total was $611 this time with Continental. CRP>IAH>LGW

As I mentioned before, I live about a 4 hr drive from the nearest major international airport and I'm wondering if anyone else out there in VJ land is in the same situation and what do you do? Have someone drive you? take a bus? or do like me and fly there? to me it's less hassle if I fly there but that's what drives my price up so much. Bus would be about the same, you pay the fare and then have to get a taxi to and from the airport.

Now when Jonny came here he flew from Gatwick to Houston and I drove the 4 hrs to pick him up. his flight cost him about £320 return (IIRC) would have been a little more to fly into Corpus but when you think about hotel and gas it all evens out really. We did get to visit NASA while we were there :)

We are a 2-3 hour drive. I found that Prime time offered a car servicce for a few dollars more and that included the tip. WE will not do it any other way now.

there is a Texas link on the left. Not sure if this will work, but give it a try.

We typically fly Virgin. LAX to LHR. they have not let us down on price and service yet.

Aer lingus is a close second.

It depends if we are visiting Scotland or Ireland, which route we go.

I found checking the airlines website to be the best.

United KingdomConfused about marriage

Okay, I'm American (born & raised in Mid-Michigan), my fiancee is a British citizen. What would we have to do to get married here, but him not moving here? He wants me to move there to England eventually, but it will take a while to do that yet. Do we still need to get him a visa and such to just get married here? I can't find any FAQs that fit our scenario, and thought maybe someone else might know. Thanks so very much!

Julie :help:

Probably the biggest issue with your post is the fact that the US and the UK recognize marriage reciprocally. Which means you need to get married one place or the other.

If you are going to be living in the UK apply for the visa there, it is about $1000.00 and you can apply via the British Embassy.

As far as having a service here, I am not really sure how that would work.

United KingdomMy fiance is uk citizen, im US citizen. which path should we take

but then I got unsettled by some info posted previously on this forum.

Which information?

..on this thread, in response to the original question. Whilst the majority of responses appeared to agree the questioner should use the K1 process, one view was that given the opportunity again they would have chosen the 'easier' UK visa route and then transferred as a spouse to the US rather than take the K1 route.

It 'unsettled' me in so much that it came from someone experienced in the process and conflicted with research I had already undertaken. The concensus view appears to be that if the intended destination is the US then the K1 route is best. All I was seeking was some clarification on which route forum members favoured in terms of timeframe, expense and ease of application.

I have yet to submit any application and so am grateful for any input at this stage. It is always interesting when someone throws up an alternate view and I would rather not ignore that view without looking into it further before embarking on this process myself.

That would be me. As a construction project manager I can work anywhere provided it is legal for me to do so. So in our case, and with the friends we have in both countries it probably would have been easier to get married in the UK. Support plays a big role, and we are fortunate to have great friends in both countries.

That being said, I do not think we would move back to the UK. Living in So Cal has it advantages.

What we did to avoid the pitfalls of USCIS is have a "betrothal" service in Scotland.

Where all of the ceremony occurred and we promised to go to the US and Get married.

It did require allot of intervention and coercion from religious leaders to get Annie's minister to understand this.

Had I to do it all again, I think I would have moved to the UK, got married, and then do the CR-1 (i think that is the right one)

Then move to the US

United KingdomMy fiance is uk citizen, im US citizen. which path should we take

I have not lived in he UK for over a month, for those who were asking.

so lemme repharse my question:

-so, my fiance and I are not married yet, and we will not be having a legal marriage.

heres what I want: not to be seperated from her after we marry (at least for not over 2 weeks). we already bought a plane ticket for her to come over in the same flight as me. it is for roughly 85 days. we went with the fact that usually UK citizans can freely come to the US without visa

so would u recommend: we wait until we get married in august, file for the K3 in london, have her come over with me in end of august and return to UK, and then come back, and repeat until things get approved...

or would u reccomend: (im not sure if this is the correct procedure): that we apply for K1 now (would we do it now? ) and then have our non-legal marriage in august and have her still come over to the US with me in the end of august until end of November, while the K1 is pending? -- would there be a benifit in this, just becasue we would be starting the process about 4 months before we would be able to start a K3. would she recieve her visa quicker?

thanks a lot. sorry if i seemed confused about many of these things

Let me see if I can help. The language of immigration is specific and you will need to learn some of it. Which is why everyone is asking questions that you thought you have answered. Please read the guides and think of it as learning a new language.

Here is my Caveat, I am going to recommend what I would do if I were in your shoes, i do not know the laws in the UK, but in my cursory looks while we were deciding where we were going to live, this is what I thought I read. I am not a lawyer nor an immigration expert. (but i did sleep at a Good night inn last night)

Now for my recommendations, Being that you have the wedding planned you may want to consider getting married in London, if you do not have anything holding you here, get a job there (which i think you can get the temp permit in two weeks), file for the Visa (i believe it would be the K3 I130 and I485). I am not very well educated on the K3. Then come back to America together.

If you need to come back to the States, you might be separated for a bit, even up to a year, but you will eventually get to be together.

United KingdomFinancial implications and leaving money in UK
Annie maintains her Nat West Account. Granted it is until we pay off the overdraft, but we may keep it open after that so we have funds there for when we visit.

Just make sure you get a bank card with the Master Card or Visa Logo so that you may use it at a point of sale purchase. Otherwise you may have to withdraw cash.

United KingdomThe Big Move to the States..

is this for moving money over on a regular or ad hoc basis.?

For a one off lump sum we have been quoted by both Lloyds/TSB and the Nat West that for anything over £20,000 they will charge £20 and if you want it there within two workind days they charge £35.00.

It is also business rate that you get and with Nat West they phone up for you there and then and get the best deal they can and you have 30 seconds to agree or not. I did it just for an excercise one day and we asked what they could get us to transfer £50,000 and they came back with a higher rate than the business rate they were showing and what had been on TV that morning. Plus it was higher than one of the money brokerage type companies that I had also checked.

At the moment we are going with Lloyds, as when we checked with them on Saturday, they also came up with a really good rate  I think it may also be that the more you are sending over the better deal you will get. All I needed was my bank account details in the US, even though it is only a saving account and the routing number

I only moved money just the once, but you will have an account with them, for any further transactions. I'm pretty certain that they will at least match LLoyds or any other banks buisness rate, if not beat it. But it's not something where you have to make a split second decision like you had to for NatWest, so you can think about it a little before you actually do it (although I'm sure you'd have to make a decision on that day). You will have to go through anti-money laundering procedures, but every financial institution in the world has to do this. The person has to be sure that you are genuine and know where the money comes from, kind of like the Consulate Officer has to be convinced that you are genuinely together with your fiance. It's definately worth checking them out and either dropping them an email or calling up to see.

Yes i think I remember that they said it would have to be in writting so I could write a letter from states as long as I dont need to transfer the money quickly as it takes 5 days to get the letter here in UK from states or I can fax a letter they said - but again this was some time ago I still have to go in and talk to them:)

Lina (UKC)

Could I suggest Money Corp (www.moneycorp.com) they are a commercial currency broker. You phone them up in the UK agree the deal over the phone and they then send an email with payment instructions. You go to your online bank and transfer them the pounds, they are based in London. Three to four days later the money arrives in your US account, the delay is to allow the money to get from your UK account to them.

They are cheaper than NatWest and offer a better exchange rate.

They are several other commercial currency dealers who will deal with individuals if you want to shop around.

Lansbury, I used to work for Moneycorp, when I was in the UK. I used them for my money transfer, too. You really do get fantastic rates there and fast, friendly and professional service. :) I totally second the recommendation.

Also, you can get a card through them that will give you a rate improvement and commission free, should you need to change money at the airport branches.

Oh, I think I can win on the people "not knowing where your accent is from"-thing. One time when I was over visiting, I asked this hispanic gas station attendant if I could use the bathroom, like several times. But he just couldn't understand me. So I just gave up and decided I'd hold on until we got to another gas station. My sister-in-law came out and asked if I'd used the bathroom yet, and I told her what had happened. So she went back in and got the key and told me the attendant had thought I was German.

Nice! We'll have to make sure we visit.

LOL. I have a friend at Uni at Bournemouth, she loves it. I haven't been there since was a kid, though. Which is a shame, since living near Brighton I didn't live too far way. Does Bournemouth have a sandy beach? If so I might take Mark down there, to prove we have them!

I actually find it's a little less green here, but I have moved from the South of England, close to lots of rolling hills and woodland (I lived a stone throws away from lots of fields), to a city on the edge of a desert. Salt Lake City would be desert if it weren't for the mountains around it. Things aren't as green here, for the most part. Especially at the end of summer, and of course, when it's cold and snowy in the winter.

But there are some fantastic landscapes here. I love the red rock formations. So different from what I'm used to and I'm a total Geography geek, so I love when we go out camping there. :)

United KingdomWho Gives in first?
Yep, in this case it's time for you to be the bigger person and apologise. But you already realise that.

Sometimes my hubby would be like that when we were apart (I could be like that sometimes, too). So I would simply reply that I loved him and let him know that he could call, text, message, email, etc. me to talk about the thing that had him down/upset if he wanted to. But if he didn't, that was fine too.

Sometimes people do need a bit of time to themselves and the people close to them need to let them have that space. I know that can be easier said than done sometimes, though.
