US Citizenship General Discussion	N-400 JANUARY 2012 FILERS	my dad passed his test, mom didnt .. on the speech part. she said while the IO was going through her application and on those YES/NO parts she answered one wrong. Then the IO asked again, she answered right then. IO said she is weak in english speech and needs to be tested again. She was given the white paper with speech part checked on retest. That's mixed new then. Great that your Dad passed, but sad that your Mom didn't. But like Blessed said, she was probably just a bit nervous. I hope she gets a date for a second interview soon. I was thinking maybe your IO was nasty or mean to you or something! I would be careful with your phrasing, WANTTOBEANAMERICAN. Deathstrike is NOT a US Citizen and won't be until sworn in at their oath ceremony (Deathstrike, I know you are aware of this, just wanted to make sure that WTBAA is aware of this, too). US Citizenship General Discussion	N-400 JANUARY 2012 FILERS	Best of luck to Miguel123, Notscenenough, Corishman, DAndy127, Pepper & JK0926 with their interviews and oath ceremonies this week! Had my pretty uneventful interview this morning. after waiting like 5min from appt time at 850 (got there at 830), a very nice lady called me in. Verified current address, SSN, ph#, if I had any other trips after submitting the N400. Asked me to read "Who was Abraham Lincoln" and write 'Lincoln was president during the civil war". Questions asked were: - Name one of the largest rivers in US - who lived in US before europeans - Who is the speaker of the house - when was declaration of Independence - How many years we elect a president for - What are the first ten amendments called handed me a white paper with congratulations part checked. She said I will be scheduled for ceremony here in Tallahassee, but cant estimate a date (which is good and bad - good since no 6hr drive, bad since I am scheduled for a trip in end of May, in case the oath is within a week before the trip - I am in trouble as I wont have GC). Yay, congrats! Glad it all went smoothly for you. If you feel it's cutting things too close, you can always reschedule your oath. Or you could see if you can get out to a passport agency center after making an appointment by phone and bringing your flight itinerary with you. How did your parents interview go? US Citizenship General Discussion	N-400 JANUARY 2012 FILERS	Ok, so today, 3 months and 9 days after the day I sent my N-400, now I am a US citizen It was a kind of small ceremony, it took about 2 hours. There were 56 new citizens from 22 counties, and I was really surprised to find that only one person from Russian-speaking countries was me By the way, there was no video with the President's message. And you know, it is very unusual feeling not to have the greencard in my wallet Yay! Congrats, Ree! I know the feeling about the green card. So weird. It's been a big 2 weeks for a lot of the January 2012 filers. By the way.... Huffy and Pandawars, you forgot to change something in your profiles What about "Filed for: Naturalization(approved)"? US Citizenship General Discussion	N-400 JANUARY 2012 FILERS	So yes...I'm a US Citizen! Took 3 months and 12 days so it was a pretty quick process. The oath ceremony was kinda cheesy for me especially when they played "Proud to be an American" at the end. I thought the pre-recorded message from Obama was a nice touch even though I don't like him. I happened to be in the 3rd row from where they started handing out Naturalization Certificates so I got out of there pretty quickly. The judge came around 12:30 and I was out by 1PM so my ceremony was pretty short. I am the first in my immediate family to get naturalized so it was a little weird for me to be honest. I don't feel any different but I'm glad that I'll be able to vote in this upcoming election. Anyways, thanks to all you guys for your support and help throughout my journey. Now I need to help the rest of my family go down this process if they want to =) Oh one question...do you have to sign the naturalization certificate? There is a section for my signature on the N-550. Congrats, Pandawars! We walked pretty much the exact same timeline, just one day apart. It also took me 3 months 12 days to naturalize. I agree the Proud to be an American video was really cheesy. But there was former Chinese citizen just two seats down from me who was singing it quite enthusiastically (if badly) and it was touching to see how important becoming an American was for him. I also took some pictures of him at the ceremony before it began. My husband said that our son quite enjoyed it too and was singing Aaaaaaaay! at the USA part of the song and dancing , so at least there were a few people at the oath ceremony who appreciated it. I signed my certificate because I had to send it off with my passport application, I signed it the same way I sign my credit cards, which was also the same way I signed the back of the picture that's on the certificate. I also asked my IO at the interview how to sign my name and the IO who gave me my Naturalization certificate and they both said to sign my name the way I do for credit cards, etc. But there seems to be a lot of debate as to what the "correct" way to sign it is, so you might want to ask around and see what the general consensus is? US Citizenship General Discussion	N-400 JANUARY 2012 FILERS	Thanks for elucidating on the matter or question rather...my local office is in baltimore and i am filing 90 days before...its almost 5 years for me liks really near as we speak! We will see how it goes When you (or if you have already) apply, you should look into joining the appropriate month thread. You can also look through previous month threads to see if you can find other people from Baltimore and see what their timelines look like. If you are very close to the 5 year anniversary of having a green card, then you I wouldn't anticipate you having to wait too long for an interview date. But I don't really have any clue what processing dates are like for Baltimore. If you go to the USCIS website and check on your status, using your receipt number. At the bottom of the webpage, under your current status you can select the N-400 from the drop-down and select your local office and see what their average processing time is like. Have you checked your status online yet (uscis.gov)? That is often updated before you receive a paper notice in the mail (although it will not actually list the date of your interview, it will just tell you what date they sent your letter to you). US Citizenship General Discussion	N-400 JANUARY 2012 FILERS	Live blogging my oath ceremony...got here at 10:15 and there was a line out the door. Check-in was pretty straight forward. Turned in my green card which was a bit nostalgic for me. There are 739 people becoming US Citizens today. I ran into my IO from my interview which was pretty nice...she was very nice and excited for everyone. I'm sitting and waiting for the judge to show up around noon. Almost there... Wait until you get home tonight and realise there's no green card sitting in your wallet. It feels really strange. Great to hear there are a nice amount of people in your ceremony. There was 4,439 in my ceremony yesterday . Took a very long time to get everyone seated, hopefully it will be a lot quicker to sit 739 people . And yep, you are minutes away now from being done. I didn't think I'd really feel too different or anything, but I do. It was a very touching ceremony and I think some of it must also be the relief of being done finally and knowing that no matter what happens, I will be able to be with my family and not have to worry about renewing or adjusting statuses any more. Spent time waiting in the wrong line, since the IO who stapled my GC to my letter wrote the wrong table number on it. Still, it was only the line next to me, so they let me go next when the person at the other line was finished which was nice. I thought I was going to have to go to the back of the line again. After I got my Naturalization certificate, I took a picture, signed it and kissed it goodbye after waiting half an hour in a line to apply for my passport. So while I am FINALLY finished with my Visa Journey , I am still waiting . I guess that is just the story of my life. Congratulations to everyone who has had interviews today. US Citizenship General Discussion	Fake ID's	Even if they went off and got married... if he is a citizen.. she is still not elegible for adjustment due to being here illegally. That is not true. Illegal aliens who entered without inspection are not eligible to adjust status, but illegal aliens who had an initial legal entry but whose status lapsed ARE eligible to adjust status. (That's what allows a K-1'er to marry on the 89th day, wait a week for the certified marriage certificate, and file AOS on the 96th day -- such a person is an illegal alien after day 90.) The OP doesn't make it clear which category she falls into. I'm not making any statement about the fairness of existing laws (they're pretty darn unfair, actually). One is always free to withold information from anyone one chooses. I'm just correcting the misstatement that "she is still not elegible for adjustment due to being here illegally." *loud buzzer* WRONG Not illegal, if you enter legally on a k1, get married within 90 days of entry, and do not file AOS it does not make you illegal. the term is out of status. There are people who would prefer to eliminate the term "illegal alien" entirely, replacing it with "undocumented alien" or "unauthorized alien". Whatever. I agree that the term "illegal alien" is politically charged, with negative connotations. Many people would like to reserve it for only those "undesireable" aliens without status. But the term "illegal alien" is most often used to refer to anyone who is in the US without status, regardless of how that person came to be out of status, or for how long that person will likely remain out of status. This is exactly why i am specific, if you are here illegally then that is what it should be called regardless if you intentionally overstay or are just illegal. The distinction I am making is made by the fact that there is no legal requirement to the timeframe of applying for AOS, provided you have complied with the requirements of the K1, hence the term "out of status" . I understand what you are saying and perhaps we should start a new one, your suggestions are welcomed. Trust me we are sick and tired of all these cute phrases for illegals, time to call a spade a spade. as a personal note, we did not need to file the AOS cause we were not in a hurry. Well, options 1, 2 & 3 are rare enough to stumble across on the internet these days. We have checked this with attorneys, immigration judges, and law enforcement. all of them state that if you entered legally on a K1 there is no time limit to file AOS. It makes it difficult to prove legitimacy, but not illegal. Annie was told by USCIS to carry a copy of her visa and the Marriage cert with her and that would suffice until we get her GC. Well, what is someone who arrives on a B visa and doesn't leave? Out of status, aka 'illegal'. It's not really safe or fair to say 'there is no time limit to file AOS'. There is a time limit, the same that applies to anyone who is outside of their I-94 admitted time period. The amount of out of status time will affect their ability to re-enter the country, and the expired K-1 can still accumulate enough out of status time to incur a 3 or 10 year bar if they leave the US. Married or not. Should something happen to the USC petitioner, the expired K-1 is in a real pickle if she has no I-485 filed. I'm sure we could sit here all day and think of exceptions to this statement. It's a pretty broad and dangerous statement left as it is. I think we are all right, and yes we all could come up with exceptions. The fact remains that with a K1 visa the intention is to get married in the US and remain, therefore officials look at it as thought there was no time limit to file AOS. In fact there are several people who did not file AOS for two years to avoid conditional residency, therefore a precedent is set. I would not want to argue the point if an issue arose. But the fact is that there are people who have done it with no issue. I would still recomend to everyone to file AOS as soon as possible, but from what I have read and been told by various officials(not clerks), there is no real time limit to file AOS. Time Outside the United States (Including Trips to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean Islands) A. How many total days did you spend outside of the United States during the past five years? [ ] days The reason I am confused is because I am filing from being married to the same US Citizen for 3 years (came here with a K1 visa). Therefore I lived in my home country for 2 years (or thereabouts) before I came over here and married my husband and filed for adjustment of status. How many days do I include? The 2 years plus any trips taken? Or just the trips taken (I have been over to visit my family once since coming over) to other countries? What have you guys put down? Thanks in advance for any help! US Citizenship General Discussion	Is The N400 Paperwork needed For My Situation?	Thank you for your replies. I arrived in the US in March of 2009 and maried in April 09. I recently got my 10 year green card in November of 2011. So I would have been in the US for 3 years at the end of March 2012. Would I be right in saying that I will be a LPR for 3 years in November of 2015? That would be 3 years after i recieved my 10 year green card? Would it be benificial to become a US Citizen or not. Im not going to lie, its a relief knowing that there are no more packages, paperwork to do. Its been one hell of a ride. Thanks again for your replies. inneedofhelp, when you got married you filed to adjust your status from a K-1 Visa holder to a conditional permanent resident (CPR). This greencard lasts for 2 years and at that point you are required to remove the conditions from your greencard (ROC), at this point you get a ten year greencard and become an unconditional permanent resident (LPR). The 2 year conditional greencard you had counts as 2 years as a permanent resident. IF you were still married to your K-1 Petitioner you would be able to file for Citizenship (using the N-400) once you have had your 10 year greencard for 1 year (because at that point you have had a greencard for 3 years), this is a special privilege allowed to greencard holders who are married to US Citizens. Since you have divorced from your US Citizen spouse you are not eligible for this "shortcut". IF you wish to be a US Citizen (but you are in no way required to, you can continue to renew your 10 year greencard for the rest of your life, so long as you are living in the US, if you would like) then you will need to wait until you are starting to hit the 5 year mark for permanent resident status (3 years into your 10 year greencard, because you already have 2 years with your conditional greencard). You can file 90 days before you hit 5 years as a greencard holder. Check your greencard and it will say on there the date you became a greencard holder (the date you got your 2 year greencard). Count forward 5 years. I know all the abbreviations can be confusing, so I hope this helped clarify things for you. As for whether it would be beneficial for you to become a US Citizen, only you can really assess that. Do some research, see what being a US Citizen allows you to do that being a LPR doesn't allow you to do. Also look into what your responsibilities will be to the US if you do choose to become a US Citizen. This is not really something that someone can tell you if you want or not. It's a personal choice. US Citizenship General Discussion	Question on Oath Ceremony Date	Yes. I am moving on with my life. I am in the Med School in Caribbean. I flew to US last week to attend the interview and flew back on Sunday to continue attending the classes. Now as soon as I hear the date then I have to fly back to US again and attend the oath ceremony and fly back to school again. I am trying to make the travel plans to return for the oath ceremony as soon as I hear the date. I also have my final exams in the school in the next 9 weeks. Just trying to put all things in perspective and stay focused in the school. While I understand that you probably want to get your Naturalization Cert as soon as possible, if the Oath date clashes with exams or you are just unable to get back to the US by that date you can always re-schedule it. So since you need to travel back to continue your schooling I'd go ahead and do as you planned with re-scheduling the oath ceremony as a back-up plan. If it were travel for a vacation, personally, I probably hold back a month or two and hope to receive notification of the date sooner rather than later and then book my vacation. Other places you will need to wait for a letter stating the date, time and location. I know from what other people have said that my office doesn't offer same day oaths and that I will be sent a letter for an oath ceremony at a later date. Another concern with my wife are those crazy purses they have to drag around, always kept a watchful eye on that, too easy for someone to grab on. Why can't women wear clothes with a good deep pocket and carry a wallet? Well, I did need a pipe wrench once, wife had one of those in her purse. Hey if clothing companies would start actually making said clothes with a good deep pocket, I'd start carrying my wallet/purse there. In reality, women are lucky if they actually even GET a pocket in their clothing, let alone it actually being of a significant size to fit a wallet into. A lot of my 18 month old's clothes however seem to have at least 6 functional pockets. I guess it must be for all that money and ID that babies/toddlers need to carry around with them. Huffy, there's no law anywhere in the United States requiring a U.S. citizen to carry any form of ID with them. The magic sentence is "I am a U.S. citizen." End of discussion. I know there's no law. But if you were hispanic and in AZ I'm sure you'd still be given a hard time. Even my co-worker was when she was pulled over in CA. Cop soon changed his attitude when she showed him her Military ID.
