What should a student do to legally marry a US citizen while under a J-1 visa, should he go back to his country and apply for the K-1 after the end of the J-1 or can he apply already while in the USA? If your fiancee can speak English it is even more straight forward... I did not use a lawyer but I can understand you would prefer one... But I do not think it would speed up the process, just make you maybe less worried. When you start the journey, you need to read, read, read, get overwhelmed by USCIS website pages, try to fill out the forms and go to VJ for advice... It takes work, but once you understand how it works it is getting easier and easier to fill out the forms and know what to do for next steps. It is not silly, it is black HUMOUR It is just a way to say that lawyers, in easy cases such as a K1 applications, take advantage of the lack of information of people and let them believe they cannot do it alone. USCIS is a pain in the neck BUT the process is fairly EASY if you follow the instructions (and ask questions on this forum if you are not sure) The hardest parts are: 1- Get all the evidence documentation (and NO lawyer can do it for you) 2- Wait The easiest parts are: 1- Making photocopies 2- Downloading the forms online And that is what a lawyer will charge you for!!!!!
