K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresOh so many questions!

By the way, it is perfectly OK to drive in the US with a foreign driver's license.

It is, but in California if you are establishing permanent residence (which her fiancé will be) you are only allowed to drive with your foreign license for ten days' residence. And, as he isn't a US or Canadian citizen, he'll need to take the full road test and written test in able to obtain a California license.

socalgal - you are welcome to message me if you like. :) But the short answer is I am adjusting very well - I love it here!

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresOh so many questions!
Welcome! Like your fiancé, I'm from the UK and moved to California.

I don't have answers for all of your questions, but here are some:

1. This is more of a tip than an answer: Don't just count the filing fees themselves but the cost of postage, travelling to and staying in London, any printing costs, etc... especially important if you are on a tight budget :)

2. As others have said, 6 months.

As for shipping, personally I had really good experience with Excess Baggage - http://www.excess-baggage.com/ They provided me with all the boxes, I packed, and then they did door-to-door delivery (picked it up and dropped it off in the US 12 weeks later) for around $500 for 12 boxes. I had no problems with customs, except for having to provide $50 for an x-ray. There are many recommendations in the UK forum, but that's my personal recommendation :) It was so easy!

3. You will have to wait for AP - this can still take a month or two after you file for AOS, so there's really no way to leave immediately for a foreign honeymoon. You'll have to delay, unfortunately.

4. Yes. It's really not rocket science! It sounds as if you already understand quite a lot. As long as your case isn't complex (criminal backgrounds, your sixth marriage, etc.) it's really just a case of following the instructions and telling the truth, like Damian&Kelly says. Keep a copy of everything you send and receive!

Good luck!

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresPetition Questions

even if it is not my current address or even the one before that?
I dont want to make any mistakes

Yes.

When I filled out the form, NONE of the addresses I had used in the last five years (I moved around a lot as a student!) were addresses I had lived at for more than a year. So for that question I answered with my parents' address, which I had last lived at seven years ago. :)

Yes, that is correct. :)

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresPetition Questions

Thanks,
on the beneficary g325a do you just leave the address outside the US blank, all of the address are outside obviously lol

No! You may repeat the address you mentioned in the previous section, but you should still answer the question.
Alex & RachelFemaleEngland2011-06-16 17:49:00
K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresPetition Questions

1st question, is it best to send the petition express mail to this address.... USCIS 2501 South State Highway 121 Business Suite 400 Lewsville, TX, 75067

2nd, on the example letters, letter of intent and cover letter, where it says "Address of your service center"and"USCIS service center" which on is this?
Also on the petitioners fiance letter of intent what do you put in the "Embassy address" and "contry where it is located"
On the beneficiary fiance letter of intent is the Embassy address the one in London?

3rd, can you state "student" in the employment section or do you just state none?

4th, on the G325a what does 'applicants address outside the US of more than 1 year' mean?

Thanks

1. That is where to send the petition if you are sending it express mail, yes. If you are asking whether or not to send it express mail, that's entirely up to you! Personally I did not, but I can understand why others would.

2. I put the address to which I was sending the petition. I used the embassy address only when using the letter for packet 3, not at the initial filing stage.

3. I would state 'unemployed', as in the example given on VisaJourney.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresInternational Dating/ Salary Consideration
Well, it really all depends on where in the US does the petitioner live, which country the beneficiary lives in (i.e. if it's Canada or Mexico, it's much easier/cheaper to make trips to each other's country), and your definition of 'comfortable' life. :P

Purely based on personal experience and travel and visa expenses, I'd say $35,000+.

Also... the beneficiary can help pay, too, in many circumstances. ;) I'm the beneficiary and covered the entire costs of the travel, visa, moving expenses, AOS and ROC.

If there is any woman on this forum that married and supports their husband, I would like to hear from them.

That would be me!

Paid for the entire visa, flights and moving costs myself, found work as soon as I had my EAD, and have been supporting us both ever since.

There are all kinds of reasons for getting together. :)

I did love Jim's post in this thread, though.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Proceduresshould she change her name on marriage certificate
Yes, it holds true for immigrants.

Yes, her passport won't match other documents. It wasn't a hassle for me to change my passport, however. But I do not know how it would be to change a Thailand passport.

It's cheapest and easiest to change your name upon marriage. If changing it later, there are often fees to be paid.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresFee Outline?

have a look at this and other things to consider are medical fee... possible immunizations... police certificate

I'd also like to add:

Train tickets (or other cost of transport) to get you to embassy
Accommodation night before interview
Flight!
Moving costs
All the costs associated with actually getting married (even if you're only paying for a courthouse ceremony)

It is definitely an expensive process!

The AOS cost is tough - it was especially tough for us as my husband was laid off the day after we were married! I'd definitely recommend saving for it now!

dbears - if I ever need to unburden myself of a few of my books you shall be the first person I call! good.gif Although there's little chance of that happening, I'm afraid!

I have a few books that I bought second-hand - most of them out of print; one of my favourite authors only has one novel left in print - but they're usually relegated to the top shelf. I'm far too particular about appearances. blush.gif I used to lend out books all the time and I always used to wince when they came back with torn pages and tatty covers (and one time my friend managed to burn a hole right through one!).

dbears - you may appreciate this photo of part of my bookshelves, then:

biggrin.gif

I'm the same way when it comes to shopping. I actually visited a bookstore the other week and for the first time in my life did not leave with a book in hand! The big book chainstore here is called Waterstone's - they have a lovely shop in the centre of Sheffield and they always have a 3 for 2 offer on certain books. If I spy one or two books I'd like in that offer I simply have to find more so I can take advantage of it!

Yeah...I'm wondering what to do about my books. Most will probably be cheaper to ship over than to sell and re-buy. I'll give away any books that aren't in really good condition; I have a thing about liking my books to be pristine-looking.

Mythologies and fairy-tales are the best! I also have a weakness for detective stories, especially if they're British and cliché. I love anything by Agatha Christie and I also have the complete Sherlock Holmes and Inspector Morse, of course!

My mother was always telling me off for reading too much, too. She'd keep telling me to 'go outside and get some fresh air!' She was very good at always making us sit down for dinner together and to go out together, though, so I never did get away with staying in bed all day. wink.gif My dad used to encourage me - he was always fed up of me stealing his books so he bought me all of the £1 classics, hoping that the dense language and length would keep me busy. It sort of worked; instead of reading a book in an afternoon I took (for example) three days to complete Jane Eyre and a week to complete Mansfield Park, but I think he was hoping I'd take even longer. laughing.gif

Now it's quite nice because he, one of my brothers and I all swap book recommendations and compare notes on what we've read - but we all have our own copies and I'm 190 miles away so can no longer borrow his!

Sight-read is correct. I'm the same; can't improvise (and am amazed by people who can - funnily enough, the two people I've known who were really good at improvisation couldn't read music) but love to sight-read, probably because I hate practising. tongue.gif

I know what you mean about never going deep into anything! For example, I love all kinds of music and I'm happy to see an opera, or a musical, or a classical concert or a rock/pop concert. But there are so many people who are really into one genre and can tell you all about the bands in that genre and the influence they've had and they have the t-shirts and posters and signed prints. I couldn't do that; I love a little variety! I think it's a shame, when, for example, a theatre-goer criticises someone else for watching movies, as if a play is somehow more worthy than a film. Again, I've enjoyed so many different forms of entertainment; from ballet to the Rocky Horror Show.

I'm trying to find more outlandish pet names for Alex. Maybe I'll take a cue from my mother and start picking foreign words at random. devil.gif laughing.gif

Blake - good.gif I like your attitude towards books, too. I'm the same. I just love a large library! I can't comprehend how people don't have a large collection of books...there are so many fantastic stories out there; I can't imagine what my childhood would have been like if I hadn't had so many books to read. It's the best form of escapism and is great for improving language skills.

Jeroen - travelling is fun! I love visiting new places; very exciting. Know what you mean about cost, though. One thing I shall definitely miss about living in Europe is how easy and cheap it is to visit an entirely different country.

Cecile/Miss Yoko - I was having a conversation earlier about pet names and that reminded me of what my mother calls her children. You might get a kick out of this! My mother used to be very good at French and had a French pen-friend she saw regularly (and still does) but there are still many words she doesn't know. (Once, when she was 17 and staying with her French friend, she wanted to communicate at the dinner table that she was full. Unfortunately she used a phrase which was also slang for 'I'm pregnant'. Cue a shocked dinner table!) Anyway, two of the words she uses as pet names are 'poubelle' and 'chou-fleur'. Even when she discovered what they meant, she still continued to use them because she thought it was so funny. laughing.gif

Hobbies, eh? Since I no longer have piano, violin and tap lessons I suppose my hobbies consist of being social, cooking for friends and reading/watching films. tongue.gif Not terribly interesting, although I'm the go-to girl among my friends and family for DVD recommendations. laughing.gif

I suppose there's not anything I'm really passionate about. I like to draw/design and have done the odd painting/website. When I borrow a camera I like to take photos. But most people like to do that!

I love history; I did Ancient History at sixth form college and regret not doing it at university. cray5ol.gif But I'm lazy about reading it unless I have to, although I love historical fiction. I have a shelf full of Russian history books waiting to be read, actually.

So what is that proverb with canaries in a coal mine?

Here you go:

QUOTE
One of coal mining’s earliest systems for warning of the presence of methane gas, the canary in the coal mine, though low-tech, was
extremely effective and rather easy to read: if the bird died, miners had to get out of the shaft.

As coal mines became deeper, so did problems of ventilation. Gas was an eternal problem in the mines, without adequate oxygen in the air, the miner's would die.

The Solution: taking canaries into the mine. If the canary died, there was gas and the miners needed to leave the pit.

The bright yellow canary birds were an early coal miner's life insurance policy. Carried below ground in cages, the animals' highly sensitive metabolism detected methane and carbon monoxide gas traces that signaled potential explosions, poisoned air or both.

On their web site MSHA (Mine Safety Health Adminstration) says "Canaries were preferred over mice to alert coal miners to the presence of carbon monoxide underground.... For instance, when consumed by the effects of carbon monoxide, a canary would sway noticeably on his perch before falling."

LOL most Americans don't even know how to use English properly wink.gif Happy to be part of such a busy thread....and will be even happier once more Jan approvals start popping up good.gif

So very true!

If you use Firefox it comes these days with an automatic spellchecker that underlines misspelled words as you type. Now, I pride myself on being a pretty decent speller, but there are still times when I come across a word I've not used in a while or I make a typo. Since the spellcheck doesn't automatically correct words but merely underlines them I'm forced to go back and make the corrections myself, and I've actually learned how to spell correctly a couple of difficult words that way. I suppose spellchecks aren't always entirely useless!

Well, another couple who met on the same forums that Alex and I met on were married last weekend - they're going to file a K3! Actually, when we marry we'll be the third couple to have met on the forums to marry - the first couple moved to Canada where it sounds like the process was a lot easier. tongue.gif

Hmmm.. I do know we all learn how to speak English in the British way, both oral as written (like 'colour' instead of 'color') so maybe that is why it is like that. We also start to learn English when we're about 11-12 years old. Compared to the Germans, we don't do dubbed movies, this might also be why we learn stuff earlier (like for example, when being in Germany, I learned most German coz the movies were dubbed haha).

That makes sense. yes.gif You're probably better immersed in the language. Of course I know many German and French people who speak English very, very well but they always retain a distinct German/French accent.

Yup, I saw that too. Their profile has been visited by tons of people today, I'm sure everyone is going "WHAT THE ^&$#&*???!"

All I can think of is they are a Cuba petitioner. Those get pushed through right away, which might explain the 22 days. Their profile doesn't have any info, so who knows. I'm guessing it's either that or is just a typo like you said. Let's hope anyway...

Ooh - the voice files named 'spectre' in that directory are spoken by a Dutchman and he has an awesome voice - very 1940s radio presenter-y.

All of the Dutch people I have known could easily have been mistaken for Brits when speaking English - perhaps because you're usually bilingual from an earlier age than, say, the French or Germans?

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsJanuary Filers at the CSC - How are you doing?
I am always super-impressed by anyone who can speak more than one language! I learned French from the age of 7 to the age of 15 and I can barely remember anything - and I certainly can't speak it. I was reasonably okay at writing and reading French but when it came to speaking it I could never make myself understood. It was very disheartening! I don't have a very good ear for languages - heck, I often have to ask people to repeat themselves when they are speaking English - so I find it amazing when people converse in a language other than their native tongue.

Writing a blog in English is a great way to practice the language! I think you have done really well to learn what you have! I'll be sure to tell you if you make a really, really bad mistake. wink.gif

Despite my inability to converse in other languages I am fascinated by language in general and I love all the nuances in the English language. I'm quite excited as Alex is currently doing an essay-based course and I'm getting to proof-read all of his essays. I just e-mailed one back to him, actually, covered in my red notes - I hope he's not too offended! It really was quite well written but I kept thinking of ways to improve it further.

I have to be careful - it's a little bit too big for my finger; not so big as to fall off, but big enough to slide off easily if I get it caught on something (which I think is what happened in the hotel room).

I wouldn't want to lose the stones, either! Fortunately Alex chose a ring that matched what I wanted exactly (I gave him a couple of suggestions, but he still chose it by himself) - the centre stone is tension-set (a sapphire) and the four surrounding diamonds are flush-set, so none of the stones are in a vulnerable position.

I have to say that i was becoming a little bit under obsession last week. Reading VJs, watching timeline and igor's list.
So i was searching something to do, something who cost almost no money.
So, i know maybe there is already tons ... but i do a blog now.
Its for me, I don't care about traffic or stuff like that.
so, it helps me... a bit smile.gif

hugs and kisses to you all

Ooh, I shall read it now! I like how you've peppered your writings with little pictures.

Cecile is right - your ring is gorgeous!

I love wearing my ring, too. I was distraught the other week when I thought I had lost it. My mother and I were walking along a street in London when I noticed it was missing. Fortunately my mother found it in my hotel room! Although I can buy an identical ring online a replacement would not be the same - this is MY ring and it was the one that was given to me by Alex. No ring could ever replace it.

I was thinking about updating my website (which is rarely updated - I have a livejournal for most of my writings) with visa stuff but I hadn't really known what to write. blush.gif
