Due to monetary constraints and a lack of holiday days, probably not until I have the visa in hand. sad.gif

Thank you, Mox!

Well...this is my first post; I've been registered for months and was lurking for about a year before that, but any burning question I had was answered by this site with minimal searching so I'd had no need to post! But now we're about to file so I figure it's time to say hi. The whole package is assembled and ready to be sent - just waiting for Alex to be paid so that he can comfortably afford the fee. Should be dispatched this weekend!

It's hard to be back in gloomy ol' England when Christmas in California was so pleasant and sunny. Here's hoping we all get processed swiftly.

Sounds reasonable for Vermont. smile.gif The majority of January Vermont filers have had their interviews scheduled for May/early June, so I'd say 6 months is realistic. Just remember not to rely on that timeframe!

Thank you! biggrin.gif

I remember feeling very nervous when we filed. Shortly afterwards I kept thinking about how I could've put the package together better and I still don't like looking at the copy we made! But so long as you follow the guides you'll be okay and once it's at the service centre there is little point in worrying about it and your fears will hopefully subside.

Feel free to browse and post in other months' filing threads!

If by picture you mean an avatar (i.e. the picture that is displayed under our names whenever we make a post) go to My Controls > Edit Avatar Settings. If uploading doesn't seem to work you might want to try hosting it elsewhere and linking to it (i.e. on photobucket or any personal image gallery).

I was approved at the end of last month but haven't received my greencard yet.

Can't believe how easy and stressless the interview was!

I never did complete the HPV vaccination course, but apparently this wasn't a problem - it wasn't asked about at the interview, nor did I receive a RFE. *shrug*

Cecile - have you started your job yet? I hope you enjoy it!

Congratulations, Cecile! biggrin.gif Hopefully you'll hear about your greencard soon, too.

Jeroen - good on Michelle! And I don't think it's that unusual, as a lot of women do start watching their diet and exercising more for their baby's health during pregnancy - it's a great motivator! It must be suuuper exciting.

I have a job, too. I'm really fortunate as it's with a wonderful company (they provide a different kind of lunch everyday, they've just secured a large amount of funding, and they were the only company in the area to have increased in value at the latest valuation). I have been incredibly busy lately. Alex is still unemployed, but while I'm hardly earning the big $$, I do earn enough to keep both of us comfortably. good.gif

Hello hello! Just checking in to see how everyone is doing. Sorry to hear about your RFE, Cecile - hope your case gets updated soon!

I received my AP and EAD last week and have an interview on the 20th of May. My friends have also been here all week; it's been great fun, but tiring, and very expensive! We spent four days in San Francisco and I must've spent over $300 on meals and bike hire and entrance fees!

The only bad part is that despite hiking over 16 miles in Yosemite, and then walking/biking close to 50 miles in San Francisco, I somehow gained the five pounds I'd lost since Christmas. crying.gif

Congratulations Jeroen and Courtney! Such a relief - you're done for two years! Sorry to hear your experience wasn't that pleasant, Courtney; what a jerk the guy was! Some of these people really are on incredible power trips - it's insane.

I have a second biometrics appointment as I have to have my fingerprints taken again. Still really hoping for that EAD soon, too!

I've been insanely busy - looking forward to the weekend! biggrin.gif

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsJanuary Filers at the CSC - How are you doing?
I do and I don't mind that.

It can certainly be confusing when you pass another intersection with the same supermarket and shops and you have to do a double-take and make sure you haven't just circled the block. It's also a shame that there aren't really 'city centres' (excepting San Francisco, from what I've seen, anyway) in the same way there are in Europe - in Sheffield it was great because I lived inner city and was half an hour's walk from everything, the buildings were largely unique and it was interesting to walk around. In San Jose, the 'inner city' is just a bunch of ugly administrative buildings and we've only been there on official business. I also hate walking here - lots of long, boring roads.

On the other hand, sometimes a little familiarity is useful! I've learned which shops I like and where they are located. Fry's sells Green & Black's chocolate and does a most delicious smoothie, despite being an electronics store (you can find things from your own country in the most bizarre places!). I've not seen a Walmart yet, but I've been pretty impressed with some of the things you can find at Target. I like Jamba Juice and Togo's and so it's actually useful sometimes seeing those places everywhere - I know where to get my lunch from!

I guess it also depends on how easily you can find more unusual little shopping centres - quite a few of the smaller towns around here have really interesting family-owned bookstores and mini-markets, and they're fun to walk in, too. Pity they're not a little closer, but at least they're there!

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsJanuary Filers at the CSC - How are you doing?
Congratulations hawkeye!

I'm hoping that at the interview they won't ask to see much supporting evidence. First of all, Alex and I decided it would be best to continue to use his parents' address for AOS paperwork, as we were concerned about losing this apartment and he also currently has most of his bills going there. I don't have a bank account yet and he's not even sure I can get a joint account with him (he has an account at a tech credit union). We don't really have any bills as all utilities are included in the lease, so I'm wondering what we can use! At least we'll file a joint tax return. Oh, and, if I can help it, the wedding photos are never seeing light of day. tongue.gif

Wow that's a lot of shelves Rachel! Almost looks like a bookstore tongue.gif

We just came back of a one week vacation in New Orleans, it was very nice, we had a lot of fun! we walked a lot in town (French Quarter, and also Algiers, the historic part of town), we went to the Lake Pontchartrain, we took a tour of the swamps in Slidell and then went in Mississippi on the coast because I wanted to see the ocean biggrin.gif There are still a lot of destroyed houses, the ocean front in Mississippi looked all empty. 80% of the houses we saw were not houses anymore, we could only see the foundation pillars of the houses, the rest was brand new. In New Orleans it's fine if you are in the tourist areas or the business district but as soon as you get out of these areas there are more broken houses.
Anyway we had a wonderful time!

Now it's going to be job hunt again. Not much luck on that side...

Alex's dream is to own a bookstore. I said if I ever earn enough money, I'll buy him one! In the meantime the best thing we can do is attempt to have our own little bookstore at home. wink.gif

I'm glad you had fun on vacation! Was the French Quarter very French?

Just popping in to let everyone know we got the dreaded interview. Oh well we know we are legit so if they want to waste their time on us so be it! Gives us a little road trip since we have to go to Detroit for it. We don't have it until May 6th so weather will be nice too.

Rachel LOVE the shelves! I was just telling Gareth how I need to mapquest to see how far Ikea is from the interview location tee hee! We love us some shelving! We have insane amounts of dvds as well! Books not so much since I do tend to donate those.

sunny I shouldn't worry - seems most people have interviews. Good luck, though!

For cheap, white, laminate shelving they work very nicely and are very sturdy - definitely recommended! IKEA would be a great place to go after the interview; it's always fun and relaxing to visit there.

That, and I know I no longer have a desk job where I'm so bored I have little else to do except browse the internet!

Alex and I are doing well. My friends were thinking of visiting this week but I'm glad they didn't. After a very sunny and warm January California finally realised it needed the rain and for the past four days we've had, what, ten minutes break from the downpour?

No luck on the job front, but we can still collect unemployment for the next six months so we're not panicking just yet!

Keeping busy; Alex and I occasionally meet up with friends in Santa Cruz, and I'm helping a home-schooled boy with his math which is good practice for me, too.

Oh! And my belongings finally arrived! Everything was in good shape; only one broken glass and one broken plate, and none of the boxes were damp or torn. We bought more shelves from IKEA and have transformed the apartment:

I love Costco too! It'd be fantastic for a large family and it's great for buying food for parties/weddings.

I also bought all the flowers for the wedding there; all were rainforest-protection certified, were cheap, lasted a good while (the flowers were still fresh a week and a half later) and looked very pretty. smile.gif

Actually I think that's a problem - sometimes it's hard buying food for only two people as everything is sold in such large quantities! We've thrown a few things away lately that have gone bad before we've had a chance to eat them all. sad.gif

I am really lucky to be living here in San Jose - it's just so diverse, and that's reflected in the restaurants and supermarkets around. I've not had much difficulty acquiring most foods. I think I've mentioned before that Alex's family is about the only family I've met here who aren't immigrants themselves.

The table we bought at IKEA is so nice - solid wood and extremely sturdy. But I have a blister on my thumb from assembling it!

Alex and I are doing fine. We won't lose our apartment and have even managed to save a bit of money still. So today Alex had his first trip to IKEA; all of my books and DVDs arrive tomorrow and we desperately need more storage! Our apartment is going to be full of nothing but shelves. tongue.gif

His mother's friend is also going to be helping me with employment once my EAD arrives. She's fairly confident she can get me a job with a company who'd pay for me to go to school at the same time; I'm hoping that I'll maybe get a second BA here and qualify as an accountant.

So I went to apply for my SSN today and was told that as a K-1 holder I can't have my SSN in my married name! Boo!

Welcome alb2009! As for planning a wedding - it's not recommended, but what I did was wait to see how long the process would take (compare yourself to another recent filer), then add on a couple of months, and set a date for round about then. When I filed this time last year, it seemed that applications through the UK were taking 8-9 months, so to be on the safe side I set a wedding date for 11 months later. smile.gif

Alex and I will be able to apply for AOS this month. smile.gif I already have work lined up, so I really hope my EAD arrives quickly once I file! I am so fortunate - I haven't even had to look for work!

I don't understand what they told you that, you got married; so what is their problem? headbonk.gif
When I got married, I went to the SS with my passeport and wedding certificate, I got it with my married name without any questions.
I am wondering if you had someone who just didn't know much about that visa? blink.gif I remenber a lot of people saying how depending who you have, they can tell one thing, or the total opposite. devil.gif

Good luck on filing for AOS, I am glad you have a work waiting for you! I hope you papers will move fast!! smile.gif

Argh! I did wonder if the guy knew what he was talking about! However, I was so surprised that he even recognised what a K-1 was (and he did sound very confident) that I took his word for granted. Oh well, at least getting a name change after marriage is free!

Juuust waiting for my SSN to arrive now before I file for AoS.

Blake, I am so sorry to hear what has happened. I pray you get some kind of answer soon; the not knowing what is going on must be the worst of all. sad.gif rose.gif

I am always hugging Alex; I know that no matter what happens, we are together, and I am VERY grateful for that.

dbears - that is great news about HerolMounia! I had lost track of the VSC filers thread and was wondering what had happened to her.

Today is Alex's first day as an unemployed man, but he has already applied for three jobs and I am confident that he can find one soon. We still may have to move back into his parents' house, but if we do, we do.

Also, his mother has been a brick and has been finding out information for us and has also put me in touch with a lady who, if I can prove to do good work for, has offered to help me find employment when I have my EAD.

Hi guys,

There is some good news - Alex's mother makes enough to cover 125% of the poverty line for a family of four, so we can use her as a co-sponsor. smile.gif Still have to find the $1010, though, but we'll see. If we COULD file this month that'd be great - plus then I can join Sunny and dbears in the January filers thread again!

Isn't it funny to see how much has happened to us in a year? I really like knowing that I have a great group of supportive people who all emigrated and married in the same year as me. smile.gif

I am still concerned about having to move back in with Alex's parents, but if we have to, we have to. At least they have a spare room, and we could probably pool our finances and help each other out.

Sunny - hurrah for the boxer pup! biggrin.gif I love animals. Sadly I'm allergic to cats, but hey, maybe I'll find a hypoallergenic one. wink.gif

Good luck with your driving test, Pam! Glad to hear your job is going well. smile.gif

Well, guys, filing for Adjustment of Status has hit a snag for us. We were already to file later this month, until Alex was laid off today. He has his exit interview at the end of the week - just five days' notice, how awful!

And when he phoned his parents to tell them the bad news, they informed him his father was laid off today too.

Well, anyway, we did have a lovely wedding and honeymoon, and I'm sure we'll be able to get through this.

I haven't eaten too much (in fact I should probably be eating more; two meals a day is not good for my metabolism!) but I have been eating all the wrong kinds of things! wink.gif

Here are some photos!

The cake my brother made. It was soooo rich - and less than half of it was eaten as a result, even though everyone had a slice!

One of the vases of flowers. smile.gif

You can just about see the pink and orange placemats.

My dad paid last-minute for two nights away at a deluxe B&B for us in Half Moon Bay. I was so glad he did, it turned out to be the perfect ending to the wedding and it was lovely and warm on the Sunday. smile.gif

Oh and I ought to add that all of my family arrived safely, but my sister, who flew separately, was asked quite a few questions at POE about Alex, including this one: 'Why is Alex's last name Susoeff?' What kind of question is that?! I have no idea what I would've answered. Maybe, 'because his father's last name is that too?' wacko.gif

Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas!

Sorry I have not been around lately.

Good to hear things are progressing well for you, Cecile! What a shame your EAD was approved so quickly, though. wink.gif

Not snowy here, of course. Been very sunny, although quite chilly at times.

Wedding is tomorrow! Everybody has been great with helping us prepare and everything is shaping up nicely.

My brother is making a three-layer chocolate cake. It should easily feed all of our guests. It tastes like brownie; yummy!

Today we bought flowers from Costco and a wholesale florists and this evening my landlady and future mother-in-law arranged 15 vases of flowers and a bouquet for me. They look stunning, and yet the total cost of flowers was less than $200! That included 6 dozen roses as well as about 12 dozen lilies and another variety of flower whose name I forget.

The flowers are red, orange, hot pink and yellow mixed with dark green leaves. That colour combination may sound odd but I promise it looks fantastic; I should have photos tomorrow!

We have white paper tablecloths for the tables and hot pink and orange placemats. smile.gif

Alex is wearing a red tie and I have a pink-red wrap to put around my shoulders. I'm still not sure about the dress but at least this way I can cover up the top (and my fat upper arms! wink.gif )

Alex's parents bought an arch for us to stand under which they are decorating with butterflies and more orange and pink decorations.

Now I have to go and make three chocolate mousses!

The apartment is really lovely and big enough for the two of us. It's been thoroughly cleaned and we bought new pillows and a duvet and sheets. The kitchen is as brand-new and it's going to be fun stocking it with cooking and baking equipment!

We also met with the minister for our wedding and he was absolutely delightful; he had the friendliest face. smile.gif

As for the AOS.. are you going for wedding gifts or money? We didn't ask anything (lol, we didnt even expected a party at first) and it turned out we received quite some money at the party and from the cards people send us... we decided to pay the AOS from that money (no worries, there's enough left for fun stuff, we already bought some nice things) so we wont feel it in our pockets and have no worries about it.

I know it is not very traditional to pay the AOS from the money that comes in at a party, but what is traditional about having a wedding with someone from another country and having to do this whole immigration thing? Since it is all so non-traditional, I don't think many people will have a problem with it if it is like this.

We are going to create a registry but we have also received some money from people already! I just didn't want to rely on the assumption that people would give gifts, you know?

Anyway, things are looking up. smile.gif We have enough money for AOS now and to buy a few household things the first week I am there, and although we can't pay off his credit cards just yet we should be able to by April, and in the meantime we may transfer the balance of his cards to a 0% APR one.

My friends are being incredibly generous and giving and have really quite humbled me! One friend just called round today and presented me with a scrapbook three months in the making. It's full of photos dating back from high school and is full of stories and random pieces of information, all nicely decorated. smile.gif

Sorry, that was far too whiny. happy.gif I am having a good time with my family and friends, anyway! Saw my friends from Sheffield for the last time before I fly last weekend in London, which was fun. It's strange to think that I'll be leaving this country behind for good in just a week's time!

I forgot to tell you guys this..

We went to get our marriage license on Friday. I first called them on the phone to make sure we had all the necessary paperwork. When we got there, they said, "oh no you didn't tell us he was on a work visa".. I said.. why would I tell you he was? He's here on a fiance visa.. "Well his social security card says otherwise!"... ummmmmmm no his social security card says he's not eligible to work.. LOOK AT HIS VISA!

After some bickering and some phone calls to the boss, they got it resolved. We live in a little hick town and they probably haven't seen many cases like ours...but come on! The United States government approved us, no way it little Putnam County, TN going to tell me no smile.gif

THEN we went to the bank to find out why he hasn't received his bank card and stuff yet. So they looked up our account and it turns out they didn't even put HIS name on our account, but rather was what immediately under his picture on his passport (the name of his birth city). This was after they argued with me that a passport isn't valid ID.. I guess I upset that guy so much that he really screwed up. According to the bank, my fiance's name is now "Stadt Bottrop" which translated from German means city of Bottrop (where he is from). The bank clerk we spoke with on Friday was cracking up at the other branch's mistake. They finally sorted everything out, but still!

Tomorrow he's going to try to get a driver's license issued.... This should be funny smile.gif

laughing.gif Oh man! Sorry, all of it must be really awkward and tedious to have to deal with, but his 'new' name is just so funny!

Good luck with getting a driver's license!

NVC have received my petition, I just don't have the exact date from Alex to enter into my timeline. I should ask him!

Congratulations! biggrin.gif

KitEEgirl - I know! Where on earth did May go? And a pre-emptive happy birthday! biggrin.gif I'm 25 this summer, too.

Sal - aw, that was so good of your doctor! I have a real fear of doctors (in spite of, or perhaps because tongue.gif , my brother and aunt are doctors) so I enjoy hearing about doctors who are lovely and helpful. Good luck dealing with Knightsbridge. star_smile.gif

It sucks that Vermont is so slow at replying to RFEs! wacko.gif I hope that you and Herolmounia receive your NoA2s as soon as possible, Lynda! Good luck with calling them - I hope you're put in contact with a sympathetic person.

Sally - it's good that you're able to get it free on the NHS, but argh at NHS waiting times! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you getting an appointment soon...

It's okay! You're entitled to a good moan. I can't imagine how frustrating it must be! sad.gif

Is the scan with the medical office in London?

It really sucks that you're being kept waiting so long, Sally. sad.gif But I'm really sure that the scan is merely a formality and that they'll find nothing wrong with you.

dbears - here's hoping that the officials hurry up and issue your visa soon! good.gif
