kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif Congratulations to Levi and Thomas! kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif

Hawkeye28 - completely agree with you there! The sunshine in California is a big, big draw for me. Alex originally wanted to move to Washington but I must admit I wasn't liking the idea of a climate so similar to the UK - he might as well have moved here!

Cecile - woo! The first of us regular CSC peeps to be married! biggrin.gif I bet it does feel very strange...I'm sure I'll find it odd, despite day-to-day life not changing.

Thanks for the luck everyone! Levi has had a hard time with lost luggage and late flights so far but hopefully the interview goes ok!

Ack, poor guy, what a mess!

Well - his clothes will have no bearing on the interview, but I can understand wanting to look nice!

I'm sure the interview will be fine. smile.gif You must be so nervous waiting to hear from him!

Well, firstly the UK forum has been quiet today anyway (there aren't many regulars) and secondly I believe most people in the UK forum are either already in the US, or are not at the stage where they can book their flight yet. smile.gif

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsJanuary Filers at the CSC - How are you doing?
Aaah, the £243 flight, once *I* rang, and despite my dad having rung earlier to double-check, was apparently due to a tax error.

BUT I now have a direct flight booked, from Heathrow to San Francisco, with BA, for £355, which is still an excellent deal, and I think I'd prefer a direct flight anyway!
Alex & RachelFemaleEngland2008-08-27 07:44:00
K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsJanuary Filers at the CSC - How are you doing?
I did check but I couldn't find one as cheap as my current option on the dates I wanted. wink.gif

Okay, folks, I can get the £243 flight with a 2 hour layover in Atlanta. Is 2 hours enough time to go through customs and catch the connecting flight?

I always find it weird though how UK to Cali is always cheaper then UK to Michigan....guess no one wants to come here sad.gif haha....

lol, its even cheaper than Vegas to Honolulu, thats even weirder :S

It is VERY cheap, but it is also on a site that I had never heard of before! There are some great bargains out there but you really need to know where to look. On the normal 'cheap' site that I have used before the cheapest flight I found was £615 or $1,132.

It's not Michigan nobody wants to come to, Sunny, it's DTW - what a suckass airport that is!! Could the terminals be any further apart!!?? On another note (regarding the cost of flights) why is it that UK-to-US round trip is so much cheaper than US-to-UK round trip? I mean it's exactly the same journey, but if it begins in the UK it's much, much cheaper than if the journey originates stateside.

Example:

I went to Northwest's website (nwa.com) and searched for a London - St Louis round trip in March. With the flight originating in London, the cost was US$560 - that's less than £300, which is a bargain. I then entered exactly the same trip, on exactly the same dates, only this time with the flight originating in St Louis. The price? $1166!!! Twice as much!!!!!! WHY!!!!!!!????? wacko.gif

Absolutely retarded.

So many reasons! Also it's worth noting that in my experience it has usually been cheaper to fly US > UK than UK > US. Maybe the recent recession is having an effect? They want to encourage people to spend money and take holidays, as this is one area people have been cutting back in?

Aaaaaand

Congratulations on your marriage today, Cecile! kicking.gif

Yes! Usually here you can expect a small dessert with a candle stuck in - but they went far and beyond!

One of the starters...oh goodness. It was a ball of crispy potato with a curried spinach centre, a very crispy coconut shell and a delicious coconut sauce poured over...simply amazing.

My dad has done some searching and has found a flight to San Francisco for just £243 ($449). ohmy.gif Hopefully booking that tomorrow!

Ooh! Good luck to Levi!

It's great to see the interviews coming thick and fast now for January folk! biggrin.gif

Thanks for the birthday wishes. smile.gif It's been fantastic. My dad took my sister and me to an amazing Indian restaurant where I had a most delicious curry, and when the waiters heard it was my birthday they bought out two free starters, a free dessert and free spirits for all - mmm! (Yes; we left a very generous tip!)

Hehe, thanks guys! Mm, that cake looks delicious! wink.gif

I've left the '18-24' group behind now. You know on questionnaires and surveys, when they ask your age? Eek! I still feel like it was only yesterday that I graduated university (or high school, for that matter).

Hope everyone else is enjoying their day, although I'm afraid few of you are in the UK (it's a national holiday here today).

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsJanuary Filers at the CSC - How are you doing?
I, too, have heard many tales of a British accent getting you let off speeding fines. wink.gif

I can't believe how low the speed limits are on Californian roads! But then the drivers are pretty bad, so it's probably just as well.

As of yet I do not have a driving license, but once I move back in with my parents I will be having 8+ hours of driving lessons a week, so hopefully I may have my British driving license (notoriously tough) before I leave for the States! It'll be useful to know how to drive on our roads and how to drive a manual, too.

P.S. Happy 25th birthday to me!

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsJanuary Filers at the CSC - How are you doing?
Yeah, we really are too lazy when it comes to learning other languages. blush.gif In our defense, we don't have the exposure to other languages that most of continental Europe does to English.

I've grown better at not dropping my Ts, although as a southerner the problem is less dropping my Ts and more dropping the ends of words altogether. We also have an incredibly wide range of dialects and accents, despite being such a small island. Fortunately I don't have any problems making myself understood in America (other than when asking for 'water' - it has a T, not a D in it!) but I do feel sorry for people with thicker accents.

Oh, I'm aware my photo is probably the worst! I wasn't suggesting yours was as bad as mine, but I was still happy to hear that not everyone is happy with their photos. wink.gif

Oh - roundabouts can be truly horrendous over here! We LOVE roundabouts! We also love narrow, steep and windy roads. smile.gif UK people find it very amusing that US roads alert you to the slightest bend, and have such low speed limits.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsJanuary Filers at the CSC - How are you doing?
Yes - no smile!

A non-smiling photo face-on flatters very few people, although proper lighting conditions can help tremendously. Ah well, bad photos are just one of those rites of life.
Alex & RachelFemaleEngland2008-08-22 07:45:00
K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsJanuary Filers at the CSC - How are you doing?
I usually fly United or American Airlines - whatever is the cheapest! wink.gif

I've not had any real problems, other than the Chicago night fiasco, but it wasn't exactly the airline's fault that tornadoes struck. The lost luggage was as a result of that.

Talking of we Brits being against the stream - *ahem* may I remind you what we are all speaking here? English sure wasn't named so for America! Calling it a text makes more sense than SMS anyhow! tongue.gif

Hurrah, I am not alone - Gareth, Jeroen and I can all be terrible passport photo buddies. I don't look evil; the lady who took my photo just managed to give me a triple chin and greasy cheeks (love the flash!) and a man-jaw (odd upwards-angle, you can see up my nose). laughing.gif

BTW cross fingers Alex should be getting a raise at his review next month! I'm suspicious of his work. Apparently three co-workers have dubbed him the 'sexier Harry Potter' (#######?!) and now another co-worker has put in a good word for him recommending that he be given a big raise. I am glad, but also find it very strange.

True - but it's glued to a page in your passport!

Oh well - I am renewing my passport as soon as I enter the States.

It's a very small gripe, I realise, and of course I am happy I have my visa! Bad photos just irritate me more than they really should. blush.gif

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsJanuary Filers at the CSC - How are you doing?
Yup!

I'd paid far too much for some terrible photos (that the woman didn't let me look at before printing off...) and was debating having them taken again, but in the end I felt it would be too much hassle.

So just make sure you like the passport photos you submit to the embassy! wink.gif

Searching for cheap flights:

Gatwick > Houston > San Jose for £360 on the 18th November! There's a four hour layover at Houston (plenty of time to go through customs) and I'd be flying with Continental Airlines.

...anyone see a catch? It sounds pretty much ideal, but I don't believe I've ever flown with Continental.

you guys were lucky that you are going through Vancouver. Seems like at every turn we get the short end of the stick: We had to go through CSC, then Canada Post lost our Packet 3, and now this. Feels like every time we try to expedite things or even ask whats going out we get slammed down. We are both feeling so beat up and exhausted by this process. Do you think that's part of the plan - to try and test us to see if the relationship is strong enough - or maybe just petty power tripping? I'm thinking its the latter. sad.gif

Probably the latter. sad.gif So sorry you're having so many problems; hope it gets a little better very soon.

laughing.gif I was about to ask the same thing!

On wedding registries...I realise they're useful to both the guests and the happy couple, and I also realise they're perfectly acceptable and no one minds them...but I still feel bad making one! I keep thinking, what if I ask for too many items? Or what if people think we're asking for knives or plates that are too expensive? What if no one uses the registry? Etc., etc.

Nice location, not too far from the water, but far enough that you should avoid the marine layer every morning. Driving is a must. Olga's never even been behind the wheel of a car - she is both excited and terrified of the concept. But that's the only way to get from store to store here, everything's so spread out and the mass transit is pretty bad. You'll enjoy driving in California - always a high speed adventure.

yes.gif I was reading about micro-climates in San Jose yesterday, actually, and how it is significantly drier and more temperate than, say, San Francisco. It's not too far from his parents (about 3 miles) and I know that there the weather is very warm and mild in winter.

Ye-ah...California driving...being a passenger was bad enough! I'm terrified! tongue.gif That, even though the roads are straighter, more level and wider than any you'll see in the UK.

Many people feel sorry for the groom, who traditionally has very little input into the wedding, but I'd love to just be able to turn up in a rented tux and nod when appropriate!

I'm going to see if I can squeeze into my dress this weekend, and if I can, perhaps try and decide what jacket to wear with it.

I'm still expected to cater for 60+ people. wacko.gif Having the money will be a start. I am going to be consulting my sister's boyfriend for ideas on a possible menu, and my brother has very kindly offered to help me cook and prepare food. smile.gif

Both are pretty terrible, but facebook is the slightly better site, both in terms of design and ease of use. I am not on them very often, and I do not have too much information up; I keep photos private on facebook because my friend insists on tagging me in all these terrible snapshots she takes! It's easy enough to sign up and you can filter the amount of information you allow others to see.

Going to the park where you had your first date is a really sweet idea! smile.gif

Good luck dealing with the aunt - I agree that it would be very odd to have her there at the ceremony. I'd probably just put my foot down and keep being very insistent but polite - just remember, it is perfectly okay - and NOT rude - to say no!

Aw! Maybe my friend has a more expensive pair, then, as I believe hers are pretty good quality and she paid quite a bit for them.

I'm trying to strike a balance between needing to buy a few more clothes so I can 'stock up' before I leave for the US, and not buying too many new things as then I won't be able to fit everything in my suitcase. Being in the US will be a great opportunity to get a new wardrobe - but only if I can afford it!

Unfortunately I'd say YES it makes it harder! sad.gif Check the laws in your state - it can be a huge hassle for the man to change his name, unfortunately. And whereas the woman gets to change her name for free, often the man has to pay a fee.

No, no visa. crying.gif

Oh well - I may visit my parents this weekend anyway. I mean, I'm not sure they'd deliver on a bank holiday Monday anyway. If I get that text telling me they're going to deliver on Tuesday I'll be so mad! I'm thinking of leaving my birth certificate/other ID (not sure what? Provisional driving license?) with my boss as he said he'd be in the office Tuesday and apparently other people can collect delivery for you if they have your ID.

Jeroen - what a hassle! But hurrah, you have your visa! So they don't send your passport via a secure mail service? Just the ordinary postal system?

Thinking I may book plane tickets this weekend.

Looking up what I need to do once I am in the US and married. There's so much to think about! One of my priorities will be changing the name and photo (outdated style of photo) in my British passport. I figure if that's changed then getting everything else in my married name ought to be easier, right?

I've go so much still to do I'm not sure how I'm going to get it all done. I told Olga that I'm purposefully leaving whole areas of the house for her to put her decorating touches on whistling.gif (she said "Yeah, right!)

See, I'd LOVE this! If Alex didn't have a small, newly-painted apartment, I'd be begging him to refrain from doing any interior decorating until I arrived there! Then again, I guess it would be pretty stressful if you were newly arrived in a strange country. Good luck with painting, anyway, Blake!

Yes! I really hope you catch us all up soon!

I really, really hope that the visa arrives either tomorrow or Friday, because I plan to visit my parents this weekend! I can't really afford it but...it's my birthday on Monday, I have a four-day weekend, and no one is around in Sheffield! So it's either spend four days on my own in an empty house, or fork out the money for a train ticket and spend it with family instead. I figure that four days' worth of food has to be at least half the cost of the train ticket, so maybe it won't be too expensive after all.
