Exactly! biggrin.gif And it's not as if we have any furniture yet with which to fill the place up. wink.gif

It's a single-storey dwelling and is quite rural, too, so we won't be disturbing anyone. whistling.gif

Then again the remoteness of the place concerns me a little...those first few months when I have no car and no job may be a little tough. But I'm pretty fond of walking so that's a bonus. Alex's parents live 5-6 miles away which isn't too far.

Alex has an apartment! kicking.gif

It is the size of a shoebox BUT it's probably the cheapest we'll ever find in the Bay Area ($775 per month, including all utilities), has a separate kitchen, and brand new kitchen/bathroom appliances!

Hehe! That is why I am calling my wedding a 'party'; I don't want all the usual traditions that no one really appreciates because they're hungry and dying to eat or because they're embarrassed by them. I just want lots of food and some music and then lots of mingling! Fortunately both families and most of our friends are sociable people and I think everyone will get on with each other like a house on fire.

I found out that while pot-luck weddings are not okay etiquette-wise, family hosted weddings are. So now I don't need to feel too guilty about accepting offers of food contributions from my mother/Alex's mother. I think I'll remain in charge of desserts, though, because I love baking cakes!

Glad to hear about the clear bloodwork, Cecile!

I'm almost looking forward to my medical because this will be the first time in my life that I've had a check-up. I think it's a little odd sometimes that we have to have our cars and parts of our houses inspected annually but not our own bodies. wink.gif

No, no interview date yet. I hope I have plenty of notice for the interview, apparently London embassy sometimes sends letters out a little late. I'm thinking of ringing to check...

For a second I thought you wrote 'tempting work' lol

laughing.gif Well I'm hoping it's tempting, too...I'm hoping that I can maybe get a better hourly rate (given my experience and given that temp jobs often pay a little higher anyway) than my current job.

I'm speaking to a friend from my home town right now and she's really excited at the thought of me moving back for a bit. My parents also sounded really delighted and my mother said the twins would be ecstatic (they're too young to even remember when I lived at home). kicking.gif

Haha, I almost said earlier, 'wait til Jeroen gets here, I bet he's surrounded by tall women living in the Netherlands.' laughing.gif

sunny - they'd better give you an approval soon or we'll all have to send our fiancés/ourselves to CSC with burning torches!

Pam - hurrah for being the same height!

Yes...it should be that guy held responsible (unfortunately responsibility legally is shared, so the landlord was perfectly within his right to take everyone's deposits) but whether they can get a hold of him...

I rang my parents and they said they'd love to have me home. They agreed that I could probably get temping work (and worse come to worse my dad said he'd pay me to paint a mural on his surgery wall). So I'm thinking I may hand my notice in next week and go back to live with my parents in September no matter what.

...I just hope I can get temping work!

Aah, I'm a giant - 172.2 cm here, or 5'7 if you prefer!

Cecile, glad to hear the medical went okay!

And thanks for the feedback - I think you and Pam are right, and that it may the best thing to do (well, until I've spent a week there and then you'll hear me complaining about my allergies and my messy sister laughing.gif ), so I think I'm going to be phoning my mother this evening.

My whole family's pretty poor at the moment, actually! (Part of that is my fault, as my dad's saving every penny he can for flights for everyone to the wedding). My sister just graduated university and left the house she was sharing last week. She was hoping to get back her deposit as she and a couple of the other girls she was sharing with had made an effort to leave it clean and tidy. Unfortunately one of her male housemates decided that on the last day he was going to smash windows and generally leave a mess everywhere for 'fun'. rolleyes.gif Well, there went my sister's and all her other housemates' deposit. I hope that somehow she manages to get money back off him but I have a feeling it's going to be hard to track him down...

Yet another beginning of the month worry about money and accommodation. wacko.gif

Flight prices are already rising and I have no doubt they'll continue to do so what with the price of petrol these days.

I'm still planning on looking after my friend's cat this summer and staying in her empty house for six weeks. After that...well, I was sorely tempted to ring up my parents and ask if I could live with them for a month or two. Heh - they'd then have five of their six children back at home! tongue.gif (Well, four, since my brother will be returning to university in September). Chance to spend more time with my family, see old friends...and hopefully save on food/rent costs.

The only problem is I wouldn't be guaranteed work. However, if I could find temping work that'd probably pay more than my current job, so maybe it's worth taking the risk.

I don't know...this is all a moot point anyway as I haven't even spoken to my parents yet and they may not necessarily relish the idea of having another child back at home...

Maybe not for every day wear, but it might look a little odd if all of your guests are dressed up nicely. laughing.gif

My mother was even worrying about finding a nice enough hat to wear. Hats are a must in the UK - in fact weddings in general are more formal here. The groom and any ushers will wear a morning suit with top hat:

(This is the case for every wedding I've been to - even the smaller, more informal ones)

and the women, at least the older, married women, will all wear hats. I had to convince her that a hat really wasn't going to be necessary for a wedding in California!

Aw! Soon, I hope very soon, Miss Yoko.

Blake - I agree with the other ladies here; ivory would probably be better.

Cecile - hope the medical wasn't too long and arduous!

Alex has zero fashion sense...he'd still say I'd look great if I wore a burlap sack. This has its advantages, of course, in that I don't always have to be dressed up nicely for him. The disadvantages are that when I am dressed up, or have made an effort to look nice, he doesn't notice! laughing.gif I'm not going to get feedback from him as to what to wear to the wedding - he's just hoping I don't choose anything dressy so that he doesn't have to wear formal clothes. Good evening!

Here's the excerpt from wikipedia for anyone else who is interested:

QUOTE
White did not become a popular option until 1840, after the marriage of Queen Victoria to Albert of Saxe-Coburg. Victoria had worn a white gown for the event so as to incorporate some lace she owned. The official wedding portrait photograph was widely published, and many other brides opted for a similar dress in honor of the Queen's choice. The tradition continues today in the form of a white wedding, though prior to the Victorian era, a bride was married in any color except black (the color of mourning) or red (which was connected with prostitutes). Later, many people assumed that the color white was intended to symbolize virginity, though this had not been the original intention. (It was the color blue that was connected to purity.) Today, the white dress is understood merely as the most traditional and popular choice for weddings, not necessarily a statement of virginity.

Actually, perhaps blue is perhaps not the best choice if it signifies purity. tongue_ss.gif Purple looks safe, though!

Hehe, I am battling my mother on that front. To her credit she is being very good about the whole affair, especially considering that as a Catholic she had the full church ceremony with a white dress with a huge veil and train. I did explain how white wasn't always a traditional colour, and that it does not traditionally symbolise purity, but money, so she understands that a colour dress wouldn't be inappropriate. wink.gif

I haven't a clue as to what I'm going to wear either. I think having the wedding in the cabana spells 'casual'. I'm a bit scared of going for white; afraid I'll look gargantuan. I'm thinking maybe blue, since blue's a traditional/lucky colour to wear to a wedding. I'd like something with long sleeves. At the moment though this is all a moot point as I can't afford a dress.

You said you're scared of going for white, have you actually tried on a white dress (it doesn't have to be a wedding gown if you don't want to)? that way you would know what you would look like with white. What type of blue would you like? something dark or light-colored?

I went and tried on a couple of wedding dresses with a friend back in February and it wasn't really me; I felt fat and ugly. Didn't help that they were strapless dresses; my shoulders/upper arms are the worst part of my body. wacko.gif

White's not actually too bad as I have a reasonably dark skin tone (although aforementioned upper arms/shoulders are pretty pasty tongue.gif ), it's just not a very slimming colour. wink.gif

It'd probably have to be dark blue...hmm, blue's not exactly my colour either. Maybe I'll look for a dark red or purple dress - although neither of those colours are very traditional for a wedding dress! I was thinking of having some blue in there, though - I know my littlest sister could wear a blue dress as she has big blue eyes, and I love blue flowers.

Alex&Rachel - we also read that the petitioner can email the embassy and request a specific date. You could always try that. How were you planning to work it out with a wedding date in December? Were you waiting to use the visa until late September anyhow? You could always do a registry wedding right away and do the real one later...although I'm sure you've thought about that already.

Yes, I am waiting to use the visa until October/November - so I am not in a huge hurry. smile.gif I'd prefer an interview asap just to get it out of the way, but I have no real reason other than that for wanting it soon. wink.gif

Parents, etc., have nixed the whole two celebrations idea. Anyway, I would not have known when to celebrate my marriage; on our actual wedding day, or on the day we chose to celebrate with family? In the long run having the one ceremony will be for the best; although I'm a little sad that I couldn't do it on a day with more meaning (we're having it on a Saturday for everyone else's convenience!).

Hehe, no, I have not had my interview date yet. They have to receive my Packet 3 first! I'm hoping they won't take more than a month to get back to me - interview will probably be August now.

We sent our packet 3 back on the 20th, and got our interview letter today! All said and done, it is exactly a month since the embassy in London received our paperwork to our interview date. I really hope it goes that fast for you!!

We're not quite sure how we got an interview so fast! I know the timeline said the average wait time is something like 80 days from NOA2. Ours was 45 I think. It could be any of the following factors:

1. Mike Thompson, our congressional representative, sent a letter to the embassy asking for them to process it as soon as they could (both my father and I solicited his help weeks ago, though we have no particular ties with him).

2. My fiance had his medical yesterday (only a week after sending packet 3 back), and passed (as far as we know...unless he somehow contracted AIDS in the last month or something).

3. My fiance sent a letter with packet 3 requesting to have the interview in advance of my last day of summer school, July 24th, so we could plan our wedding for the one year anniversary of our first meeting - August 2nd (although he forgot and wrote August 3rd smile.gif

4. My fiance works in IT and I'm a teacher - maybe the high need for both of our professions helped.

5. Our case was really straightforward. No prior marriages, #######-loads of evidence, and we sent everything back as quickly as humanly possible.

We really can't figure out what did it, but we're pretty freakin stoked that the end is in sight.

So congrats to everyone who just got their NOA2 and/or packet 3! It's been a while since I've posted, so there's a lot to celebrate for many of you. I sincerely wish and pray for you all to get the next piece of good news, whatever that may be, soon.

Take care all-
Cheryl

biggrin.gif I'm glad you received a reply so soon!

My guess is both 1 and 3 are big factors - 5 isn't so much (my case is very straight-forward, too). But the London embassy does appear to give quicker interviews to those who ask/plan to fly out sooner. I did think about putting down an earlier date for when I plan to leave, but then thought that the question 'when do you plan to get married?' might come up in the interview, so I didn't.

I have an image host and a main site with wordpress set up (blog software); at the moment both are rather going to waste. I was thinking of a sort of communal blog. Hey friends! Thanks for all your good thoughts, I felt each and every one of them yesterday... and I am happy to report, OUR VISA IS APPROVED!!!! I am posting a full report, so check out my profile if you want to read the details. We were at the embassy for 3 hours and it was SO nerve wracking. The Consular was very nice and we had only one hiccup. (Well, besides from our taxi rear ending the truck in front of us on the way to the embassy, leaving us stranded in the middle of the highway searching for another taxi to take us the rest of the way). My dad was our co-sponsor so I had my packet of info with the I-134, and one for him as well. I had everything for him and me and well, except proof that he was a US Citizen. It makes sense that they would need it, but no where in the forms does it say to include that. They wanted a copy of his passport or something proving his citizenship. I had a copy of my birth certificate with his full name on it, but that wasn't good enough. The lady who checked us in said it would be up to the consular to determine how much a delay we would have because of this. When we got called up for the actual interview, he asked me some questions about my father and his family. He was looking him up in some database apparently. He didn't seem to find what he needed, but he said he believed me and would go ahead and approve our visa today. YAY!!!

But yeah, a note for everyone who is using a co-sponsor, include a copy of their passport!!!!

Other than that, everything went well. The waiting was horrible but hey, it's not like any of us are new to waiting. Greivin and I have been loving every minute of being together again, and took full advantage of getting happy at Happy Hour last night. Our NOA2 was less than a month ago, so it's been an absolute whirlwind of emotions, stress, paperwork, airplanes, everything. But hey, I'm preaching to the choir here, no need to explain to you guys.

Anyway, just wanted to report the good news. Thank you again for all your kind words. It was so nice reading through these last couple pages and seeing all those posts to wish us luck. It means so much, thank you again! Congrats to Ragswat as well!!! I can honestly say, I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL! smile.gif

Now all energy can go to sunny and those still waiting for NOA2's, Packet 3's, Medicals, and Interviews!

Congratulations! kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif

Also THANK you for that tip. I don't believe Alex has sent any evidence of his dad's US citizenship. Do you think it'd be alright if he scanned in his dad's passport and sent that to me via e-mail?

The interview dint last more than 10-15mins. It was absolutely smooth. I was asked to collect my visa, passport and a package to show at POE next thursday. Swathi and I are so happy. Guess I will be flying to US in August, still have some stuff pending here.

We wil be hanging around here guys, esp for AOS. All the best for all those in various stages of their visa process. Good Luck!.

Rachel when are you planning to goto CA? you will be marrying in Sunnyvale?

Thank you again guys.

Raghu

Congratulations! kicking.gif I am sorry that I did not notice that your interview was so soon else I would've certainly wished you good luck, too (even though you don't appear to have needed it!).

I've been looking at AOS and it looks rather complicated. I would certainly be very grateful if you and everyone else sticks around and gives advice!

I'm not looking at going to CA until October. wacko.gif I'm not sure where we'll be marrying exactly - Alex isn't sure where the cabana is - but I shall find out from him. We'll certainly be marrying/living in the Bay Area.

Thank you for updating us, Blake. Ugh, that sounds unbelievably stressful! Still, only one time you have to go through it all! Good luck! biggrin.gif

I'm over-emotional, too - I also tear up a little at the idea of us all being reunited with our loved ones. It'll be sooo lovely for Olga if you can fly back with her, Blake!

Also waiting to hear the good news from Courtney. smile.gif

Guess what! I got my NOA2! Wooh. I didn't think I'd get this excited... I was looking at Igor's list last night and thinking how sad it was that some of the other January folk hadn't been to VJ for a few months, so who knew if they had been approved or not and it wasn't helping the rest of us who were waiting! Now I really hope the rest of the January peeps get theirs too!!!!!!!!!!! So even if you're a naturalized citizen and your fiance/e has a common name, there is hope!!!

Congratulations! That's soooo good to hear! kicking.gif

I was wrong! I thought that being in Costa Rica you may not have the time to get/access to a computer. Thank you for reporting back to us and good luck again! biggrin.gif

7.5 hours non stop? Ooouch! Having flat feet I find walking too long immensely painful - although my insoles help quite a bit. Good to see that Greivin's taking good care of you, though.

I start my new job Wednesday! Found out I will be making almost 3 more dollars an hour so that ROCKS! kicking.gif I am on my way to affording my own car (I am using my parents extra junker one at the moment that I have used past year) and a home for us as well!!! I need to start looking into Masters programs too but do not really want to even apply to any until Gareth is safely here! I don't know why just well yeah want to make sure all is gonna go good! One step at a time I guess blush.gif I am worried about dress code as it is of course going to be hot Wednesday and I will have to wear trousers and a long sleeve shirt to cover tattoos! UGH. Hoping I can wear skirts and dresses but need to make sure they don't have a nylon rule etc before I wear that so the first day I shall sweat haha...let's hope there is AC!

Congratulations! That's an awesome pay increase. kicking.gif

(it looks like I'm talking to myself on this thread today tongue.gif)
I called another doctor and my medical will be Thursday next week. I just hope I did the right thing and that the fact that I didn't wait for packet 4 won't be a big deal. From what they said, it doesn't really matter since the medical is good for a year (I am not sure about that though)

Well, Packet 3 here actually instructs us to book the medical well in advance. When I sent Packet 3 back I had to place a check mark against the box that said 'booked medical' and write down the medical date. As I'd like to have my medical a day or a couple of days before the interview so that I only have to make one trip to London I wrote (after finding the answer here on VJ) 'planning to book medical once interview date received so as to avoid making two trips into London'. I'm sure you'll be fine. smile.gif
