Alex says the police found prints, which is something; maybe they'll be able to find a match!

He's blocked his bank account so the checks can't be used but identity theft is always a huge worry. sad.gif

I always think the worst part is the sense of violation...I've only had my workplace broken into a couple of times, but it's still not nice to have someone rifled through your desk. mad.gif

Oh no! Was anything taken?

Alex here, making my rare post!

My dad's laptop and some of his prescription drugs (which he doesn't really need... Kind of an advantage there), my mom's old 1940's binoculars and a bunch of her jewelery, one of my checkbooks and a bunch of loose change.

I'm more annoyed that they took my mom's jewelery and her old 1940's binoculars than anything else, though.

I mean, my dad's laptop, yeah that was expensive but it was just a laptop. His drugs, well, he didn't really need those anyway.

But those old binoculars were like a family heirloom and the jewelry was really nice.

Wow Rachel, you're my hero. I was up at 5:30 this morning - about the same time you were getting up - but 7 tongue.gif time zones away

biggrin.gif

Shops were open - phew! Sometimes on a bank hol they adopt a Sunday trading time of 10-4. I have fresh trout fillets, new potatoes, carrots, broccoli and button mushrooms which I'll make a garlic butter for. My housemate and friend were out partying until 6 am in Nottingham and that means they probably had kebabs and a fry-up this morning (best cure for a hangover!) so they can have something lighter and healthier this evening. wink.gif

Nothing religious for me, either, although we may have a couple of prayers said to keep my parents happy. My mother is a devout Catholic, my dad's a very keen Protestant, and my parents had a huge Catholic wedding themselves so yes, they're disappointed that I'm not having a religious ceremony.

I did go to bed late - I didn't start watching Princess Mononoke until I'd finished tidying and cleaning the house so it was 3 am by the time that finished. I woke up at 10 am and spoke to Alex for a couple of hours, went back to sleep and then just recently woke up again! biggrin.gif

Great to hear, Miss Yoko!

I do have an engagement ring; it wasn't anything that broke the bank, and I did tell Alex that I certainly didn't require one, but he insisted on giving me one. smile.gif It's titanium and sapphire and my friends and family love it!

Can you believe I just got out of bed? biggrin.gif Hooray for bank holiday Mondays!

Ooh - my parents fly to Krakow today. My mother had her ears tested and was given the all-clear to fly, but she's understandably very nervous so my dad booked this week's holiday for her so she could get used to a short, 3 hour flight before she flies next year to my wedding. smile.gif

Cecile & Rachel - I just spent the last 6 hours with my hands in the dirt planting the spring flowers. I planted zinias and poseys and geraniums. But the one I planted the most of is one you'd both appreciate - Impatience - which matches my mood most of the time. I could never have been the Patient Gardner.

laughing.gif

I love geraniums! Mind you, I'm pretty easy to please; I love seeing any bed of colourful flowers. Living in a desert or similarly desolate place would be a nightmare come true.

Had a good day - first ever driving lesson went well, I cleaned the house, and I watched Princess Mononoke for the fourth time. I hope you all had similarly good weekends!

Yes - I guess we are all going to be pretty poor! Blake - sure my dad could relate with you on the college front. He had three children at university at once...our tuition is a lot cheaper but it was still an expensive time for him!

Jereon - that would really suck if you had to surrender your foreign license! Oh well...I guess so long as you could drive in The Netherlands with your American license. smile.gif Thank you for looking up the information for me! Oh, and please don't worry about the cost of driving lessons - the first ten are a belated Christmas/birthday present from my parents!

Congratulations to Tanya & Hersham! Wonderful news! biggrin.gif

As for the real vs. "non-real" wedding, simple solution.....just don't tell em, what they don't know will not hurt them.

As for the driving test in the UK being relavent in the US, just remember we drive on the other side of the road tongue.gif

The real wedding is hopefully going to be cheap as chips anyway! What I'm concerned with is having money for moving/visa/medical. Until I have enough money to pay for my flight and shipping my belongings sorting out the actual wedding is a moot point.

And I won't forget! tongue.gif I've never so much as been behind the wheel of a car, so any driving practise has to be beneficial in some way. wink.gif

Hmm... I could be wrong but isn't getting your UK drivers license a bit like throwing away your money right now? I mean, if you move to the US next year, you probably will have to do another exam and might have to turn in your current license (I dont know how this is in CA tho but I read it will be like this for me in HI).

Sorry to hear you'll have to wait so long still until you guys will marry.. have you considered a marriage just for the papers first and a bigger wedding with relatives later? That's what we will do since we wont have the money for a huge wedding either.

I doubt that I'd actually have to turn mine in - surely that isn't legal? My UK license will be valid until I turn 65 and if I ever return to the UK I shall need it again. Also, I'll be visiting the UK often and I'd like to be able to get insured on my dad's car for the odd week or two so Alex & I can tour the UK.

Either way, I'd like to pass in the UK because the UK has a very tough driving test, so the idea is that if I can drive in the UK, I can drive anywhere! wink.gif We also have to pass in a manual transmission car, and Sheffield is full of hills and very narrow roads that are going to be good practise for me.

We've been begged by our relatives and friends not to separate the legal wedding from the ceremony. They don't think it's 'proper' to celebrate the a wedding that wouldn't be 'real' in their eyes. wink.gif

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsJanuary Filers at the CSC - How are you doing?
Yes - same here! Pressured into doing it by others, will alleviate some of the feelings of guilt by only registering for the kind of traditional gifts we truly need.

I did know a couple who made two registries; one for their wedding guests and family that included kitchen equipment, and another for their internet friends that included comics and games. I have to remind myself that I'm at least not doing that!

QUOTE (aravis227 @ Apr 30 2008, 04:18 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Me, too! We've had family members clamoring for us to have a registry for our wedding (it was originally supposed to be in August, then I just couldn't handle the stress of worrying about whether the visa would come through and pretty much knowing it wouldn't), so we've been looking at dishes and stuff that we would like to have. I can't wait until he's finally here and we can have OUR space.

Strangely enough the registry is the one thing I'm not looking forward to doing. But I'm sure Alex's mother will insist I make one.

For a start, I'm feeling pretty guilty about people wanting to buy us gifts when it's going to be such a cheap wedding, not to mention that some of them will probably be contributing food, too. Second, while I have no problems buying things on my own I have issues with making a list of things for other people to buy me. I'm always worried that they'll think I have bad tastes, or have asked for something that is too expensive, or that they'll wonder why I'd like this or that. It's silly, because I love it when other people make lists for me - makes buying Christmas/birthday presents a lot easier - but I still can't use that to justify making my own lists. unsure.gif

You would have your own house! that would be awesome! You're right though, try not to think about it too much, especially if it is a "very very infinitesimal chance". Keep organizing everything with what has been planned (living with them), and then if they happen to move, you can start planning everything again!

Anybody else who keeps thinking it's Tuesday?! Maybe that's some kind of conspiracy, they brainwashed all of us to believe it's Wednesday, but they didn't reset our brains (yours and mine) well enough and we KNOW it's Tuesday! ####### am I talking about........ oh well, I'm glad it's the end of the day! I believe my brain needs to rest. wacko.gif

I'm sure Alex is happy about that tongue.gif

You're right about the Bay Area - it's a very expensive place to live. Hopefully the situation will allow for you two to set up house in his parents old house - that would be perfect.

'Perfect' is correct; I can't think of a better arrangement. yes.gif Still, we shall see. If it doesn't happen that way then I'm sure something equally good will come along. We'd probably need two people's salaries to pay the rent even if it was cheap for the Bay Area (especially as Alex is at college part-time) so
I'd still need to find a job first.

Alex and I have our relationship backwards in so many ways. laughing.gif For example, I'm the older, taller and stronger one. I'm actually probably slightly better with money than he is, although that's probably only because I've experienced living on my own and having to pay bills (and I've certainly made my fair share of mistakes in the past). But even with my weakness for shiny kitchen gadgets I don't think Alex will have too much to worry about.

Cecile - I am so happy for you and Brian. While there might be some advantages to living in the same arrangements in his friend's house, the disadvantages are so much larger. I think one of the most important things that newlyweds can do is create their own identity ( a sense of "us" rather than just you + me ). That means the in-laws and sibs, friends and aquaintances should back off and allow the couple to find their own way. I've seen many times where couples have run into problems because of too much involvement by well meaning friends and family. Having a space of your own will allow you two to grow together. I don't think you'll have any problems making friends (you have one here already -me!). Congrats also for reaching 101 - by the end of the day you'll be sub-100, fantastic.

That's just what my mother says! biggrin.gif But seriously, it is very good advice. It's a shame that it's not really an affordable option for me.

Cecile - it's strange, I keep thinking it's Tuesday, too. blush.gif

Alex said to me yesterday that there is a very, very, infinitesimal chance that his parents will be moving to northern California and would rent their house out to us. I'm not allowing myself to get my hopes up about it, but if it happened it would be amazing. We'd have a lovely, well-maintained house to live in for cheaper than we'd have any hope of finding elsewhere in the Bay Area.

Good morning Miss Yoko!

I am sorry the lack of approvals is getting you down. *hugs* Thank you for stopping in and saying hello - I love to hear that you're okay. smile.gif

good.gif Awesome! If you can get your own place I think adjusting to living in a new country and enjoying the first year of your marriage will be so much easier. I hope he manages to find a good apartment!

I'm having no problems sleeping. In fact I'm having trouble waking up in the mornings! dead.gif

Sometimes it is difficult having technology-illiterate bosses. Usually problems occur when I'm attempting to explain how e-mails work. Today I'm worrying about a particular computer.

Our office recently finally replaced our old, obsolete machines with new models and a couple of the old ones were taken away, wiped clean and given a fresh reinstall of Windows XP. One of these computers was taken home by my boss to give to his son. Now, his son's a teenager and I'm presuming that he'll be wanting to use it to play games. I ordered a monitor for it last week (a 19' TFT with a decent response time) and today I've been asked to order speakers and find a lead for the power supply. All of this implies his son hasn't had a chance to turn the computer on yet and I'm really worried he's going to be severely disappointed. Having been familiar with the old computers I can tell him that it has no graphics card, no sound card, (only onboard for both) only 256 mb of RAM (so XP is going to run horribly slowly) and I'm not even certain that it has so much as a DVD drive (it may only have a CD-RW). He'll be lucky to be playing games that are 5-6 years old, let alone anything recent or even watching DVD movies. helpsmilie.gif

Hello everyone! smile.gif

This is my first post here. I've been reading the whole thread though as my sweetie and I are January filers. I'm starting to feel the anticipation even more, especially since it seems like things could pick up in May. Great!

I do have a question though. I'm planning to travel to the US (I'm the beneficiary) to see my sweetheart at the end of June and I'm wondering if that's a good idea since from all I've read here, it seems like some of the papers in the package need to be filled ASAP. Am I dreaming too much in thinking it might get here while I'm in the US?

Hello and welcome!

It may certainly get there while you are in the US - but that shouldn't be a problem unless you're planning to stay more than a couple of months. I believe your NoA2 remains valid for four months so you can take your time in preparing package 3 to send back.

January Filers....

We've officially broken the 100 mark on Igor's List!!!!!!!!! Tonight during the 10:00pm update (Seattle time), Ayako and Nathan busted through at #99.

Let's wrap up these poor October and November folks, and start flying NOA2's out the door for December's and January's!!!! I can feel it, May is OUR MONTH!

Hurrah! kicking.gif May'd better be - because April certainly wasn't!

Blake - sorry; I'm a little funny when it comes to words. I also think 'toe' is an ugly word - and try to avoid saying it! blush.gif

I'd be interested to know if other languages have as many words for the toilet as we do - or whether the English-speaking people are just potty-mouthed!

Alex has skived off college in order to play GTA 4 - I'm jealous! I'm getting to hear all about how gorgeous it looks and how fun it is to play while I sit in my lonely study and eat cheesy mash. sad.gif

No, because when you marry a Cuban you are 'liberating' the poor soul. tongue.gif

aravis - that's a very polite and diplomatic answer you give. good.gif And I agree with you on the gay marriage stance. Thank goodness Alex is male and not female...

Blake - actually, my mother calls the toilet the 'loo' and it drives me potty. (!) I think it's a really ugly word.

Also, whoops - I'd best head home. My boss thinks I'm doing overtime, and I'm not (don't worry - I won't claim any!). blush.gif Peanut butter on bagel and fried turkey steak with vegetables for dinner, I think.

We Brits are also accused of being too polite. Nay, I say, Americans are just rude.

But then you don't call a toilet a toilet. What is up with that?! tongue.gif
