It must have been incredibly stressful to go through the treatment and the visa process at the same time! I hope this year is better for you.

At least my £47 membership does include classes.

Hotels are also a lot cheaper.

I managed to grab 2 nights in MA or RI for just under £50. smile.gif

And a great deal nicer! The hotel we had in San Jose for just over £100 a night...amazing!

United KingdomThe United States of America - my thoughts so far
I can certainly see some of the points you are saying, alienlovechild.

Personally I love red brick terraced houses. smile.gif I have lived in several. I far prefer them to living in an apartment block, which is the only other option for a densely-populated area.

Damian P didn't admit the food was bad, just that the US serves certain dishes, i.e. steak, better. I've had good and bad food both in the UK, US and many other countries.

I must admit that I agree with everyone else in that I've never encountered anyone here using the N-word, and as a whole I do not come across many racist people. I'm not denying they exist, I just think you had a particularly bad experience there.

Also - you did indeed miss the beautiful parts of the UK! tongue.gif That's an interesting selection of cities - I think out of them all, I'd only recommend London to a tourist.

QUOTE (SMB x2 @ Aug 28 2008, 03:52 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
There's a thoroughly disheartening and completely unnecessary dissection of the US and UK going on here. Both have their pros and cons in equal measure, and while it's interesting to discover the differences, I'm not sure I'd go about attacking or defending them so vehemently as demonstrated.

If ever there was a case of "your mileage will vary", this is it.

United KingdomSuit or casual wear
I wanted to wear something smart-ish to help me feel more professional at the interview.

However, when I was washing my hands in the bathroom later that day, I realised that my top was a little lower-cut than I thought (and a wee bit too big, so it slipped down over the course of the day) and that every time I had leaned in at the window to better hear what the interviewer was saying I had most likely given him a very good view of my bra! blush.gif Yet I was still fine; so really, it doesn't matter!

*just noticed the mysterious VJ log-off ghost cut off half of my last post*

... but at least we have a date (July18th). I could go on and on whining about how we are just about the last filers from our month to have their interview, which we are, but what good would that do at this point. Grrrrr.

We do have one question. In the interview letter, the $130 fee is quoted in american dollars (versus pounds for the courier). What type of funds should he bring to pay the interview fee with... dollars or pounds? blink.gif

Well, from your month, from your service centre, of course. wink.gif

Its hard not to have the support of your family. My husband had a similar problem, in that his adult children said that if he moved to the US to marry me that they'd have nothing to do with them. As you can see, he moved anyway. But there was a lot of emotional struggle over it. At the end of the day, though, you realize your fiance is your life partner, the one who'll be there watching the telly with you, and going out to dinner, etc. Its the natural progression of life. Its too bad some family members are so selfish that they can just be happy that you are happy. For my husband, its been nearly 2 years since his son and daughter have talked to him. Though, they still see fit to cash the Christmas and Birthday checks he sends.

Anyhow, I hope you can get your mom to come around. rose.gif

That is so very sad. sad.gif

My mother has never flown in her life; she has ear problems but is having that re-tested (they banned her from flying in the 70s) and she is also very scared of the thought of flying, but she is making an effort to attend my wedding and this thread is reminding me that I should give her an extra big thank you hug when I next see her. heart.gif

Re. Patience...I'm not sure that any one of us has more patience than the others; we just do what we have to do. Thanks to visa processing times/monetary constraints/arranging a wedding around when family and friends' holiday times I'm expecting a whole year will have gone by by the time I next see Alex, but that is something that is beyond my control and I just have to endure it.
