I have to say that i was becoming a little bit under obsession last week. Reading VJs, watching timeline and igor's list.
So i was searching something to do, something who cost almost no money.
So, i know maybe there is already tons ... but i do a blog now.
Its for me, I don't care about traffic or stuff like that.
so, it helps me... a bit smile.gif

hugs and kisses to you all

Ooh, I shall read it now! I like how you've peppered your writings with little pictures.

Cecile is right - your ring is gorgeous!

I love wearing my ring, too. I was distraught the other week when I thought I had lost it. My mother and I were walking along a street in London when I noticed it was missing. Fortunately my mother found it in my hotel room! Although I can buy an identical ring online a replacement would not be the same - this is MY ring and it was the one that was given to me by Alex. No ring could ever replace it.

I was thinking about updating my website (which is rarely updated - I have a livejournal for most of my writings) with visa stuff but I hadn't really known what to write. blush.gif

Yes!

Alex and I are summer babies so we'll miss each other's birthdays, too - but this is the last year it'll be happening! Next year will be our first Valentine's together, too. I can't wait for that. smile.gif

I've lost all excitement - right now it feels as if nothing's going to be happening any time soon and I'm just so bored with the process. Sigh!

Good morning (well, afternoon now) people!

I'm with Blake - I really do hope that CSC follows the trend of last year and picks up after this week.

It's rare to find a British home without one - largely because of all the tea and instant coffee we drink! I don't actually drink that much tea - and if I do, it's either really weak green tea or herbal - but I find an electric kettle really useful in so many situations - for example, boiling water for cooking vegetables with is much quicker to do in the kettle than on the hob.

I hear it's hard to get a decent electric kettle in the US. cray5ol.gif Because of the lower voltage, they don't boil water so efficiently.

Have you tried looking for local forums? I know that there is such a thing for me as the Sheffield Forums where you can sell your things and people will come and pick them up from your house and there's no need to deal with ebay or postage. That might be handy for furniture. Either that or classified ads in the paper.

I'll be selling my only piece of furniture - a big, comfy desk chair - and probably my computer and some DS games on there as those don't sell well on ebay.

I can't imagine letting everything go, either. I imagine I'll keep a good many DVDs and books. Those will be more expensive to replace than to keep and move. I'm hoping I'll make enough money from selling my other belongings to cover shipping costs for the rest.

That's a good tip - although I'd end up walking out with a bag full of expensive make-up because otherwise I'll feel too guilty. laughing.gif

Good morning, folks! It's 90 days for me now! biggrin.gif

I'm feeling so much better. I really wanted to speak to a friend yesterday to try and sort things out and fortunately I was invited round for dinner before I even had a chance to ring her to see if she was free. When I got there my housemate was there too and we had a very good evening; it transpired that the evening before people had been tired and feeling under the weather and that was why I was receiving the miserable vibes. My housemate also asked about the passworded computer - she'd tried to log on as her own computer is broken, which I didn't know - and I explained why I had put the password on and she was very apologetic and understanding. good.gif

Some of the things people have to think about for weddings is insane! Makes me very glad I'm going with a simple ceremony as I can scratch so many things - hairdresser, make-up artist, florist, best man, bridesmaids, cake-maker, DJ, caterers, photographer - right off my list. Sorry, that doesn't help you, Blake! You have my deepest sympathies, though!

Tomorrow is a magical 90 days since we filed! Well, maybe not so magical, but it's when I start growing a little more hopeful smile.gif

I'm sorry you're going through this bit of a rough patch, I know what you're talking about with the "silence" I feel that if I don't bring Olga's name up then other people close to me will not talk or ask about her. I think dbears is right that to some extent they may be avoiding a sensitive spot, but also I think its an out of sight out of mind thing as well. I find it irritating that she's not the same center of conversation for everyone, as she is the focus of my thoughts. So........I'm working a new strategy. To get everyone over here to help with the wedding legwork. good.gif

It's impossible for Olga to do much but suggest things, but finding the church, getting the reception lined up, photographers, bouquets, staying within a budget, etc. that's all fallen on my shoulders. And to put it clearly, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by the list of to do's. So... I've decided to farm it out to my sisters, parents and close friends. That way they will have an active involvement with and focus on Olga and will out of necessity talk to me about her and what she thinks. My hope is that by priming the pump this way, it will come to be more natural for them. I don't know if it'll work, but I'll let you know.

I think that this is probably particularly true for my friends!

Actually I do have one friend who, while not inquiring about Alex very often, does talk about the wedding and what we could do for a hen night. smile.gif I also had a long chat with my mother with regards to wedding arrangements and hope that she and Alex's mother can talk soon. I look forward to hearing about how it goes with your family and wedding plans!

sunnybear - I love Mary Janes! They are the only heeled shoes I can really comfortably wear - no way am I getting into stilettos! I also think it's a classic style of shoe that is suitable for many formal and casual situations. I'm so glad to have a pair.

I was impressed with some of Target's clothing lines. I may have to shop there.

No stepchildren for either of us but I hope that you and everyone else with children have a smooth transition into family life. I do look forward to having my own children in the future. smile.gif

As for the computer - I have passworded it now. I didn't want to be too passive-aggressive but I saw the browser history and, ahem, looked like my computer had been used to browse unsavoury sites - no wonder he didn't want to use his girlfriend's laptop. tongue.gif So a confrontation might only embarrass him. I like the guy but to sit in my chair and use my computer to fulfil his desires - no0pb.gif

Thanks for the mallet! biggrin.gif

My mother is wonderful. She is very easy to talk to and I do occasionally ring her up and chat to her and she is always very sympathetic! I wish I could've rung her tonight but I was busy all evening. She did give me plenty of hugs when I visited, though. rose.gif

I am comforted by the same thought - it has only been three months since I last saw Alex but obviously I am not planning to see him again before I emigrate. I really am immensely comforted by these forums, too - your words mean so much to me and I am very grateful for them. smile.gif

Alex just shrugged off the comment - said 'the guy is just being a ####### for the sake of being a #######' and moved on from it. I know that it really does get under his skin, though.

shes - Blake has you covered on the fashion front. I can't imagine that you'd have to buy many new clothes - certainly not anything for very cold/snowy weather.

Okay, guys, today's not been such a good day so apologies if this turns out to be a rant!:

*I* can cope with the separation from Alex - not ideal but manageable - but what's really not helping is the attitude of everyone around me. sad.gif

The only sympathy I've had recently is from my mother, who, when canoodling my dad, said, 'I bet Rachel is wishing she was doing this with Alex!'

I try really hard not to ask for sympathy and I'm beginning to think that maybe I've done too good a job of hiding it. I don't get asked 'how are you doing' or 'what is Alex up to' or 'how are your plans coming along' any more; in fact I can't seem to mention Alex or my upcoming wedding at all with my friends. I'm sure that not having a set wedding date doesn't help, but not to even be asked about him is sometimes upsetting. And tonight one friend said to another who was talking of not being able to see her boyfriend at the weekend, 'oh, you can't go three weeks without seeing him, that's not fair!' wacko.gif

And someone else suggested to Alex that I was 'pretend' - as in just because we are several thousand miles apart, our relationship isn't real.

And now my housemate's boyfriend is using my PC (I'm on my laptop) ...um, I don't EVER remember saying he was permitted to use it. I mean, I'd say yes if asked and I'd let my housemate or other friend use it without permission, but I'm not really sure that invitation extends to their boyfriends. I'm in the room next door, I could've been asked. mad.gif

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsJanuary Filers at the CSC - How are you doing?
Yes - of course, coming from the UK I'm used to paying a premium for food, electronic goods, public services and fuels, but when you factor in the cost of healthcare and the ridiculous rent prices (and the UK isn't exactly cheap in that regard, either) the cost of living in both the UK and California is roughly equivalent. So although I'm not entirely unprepared what is going to be a problem is me not being able to work for a few months. On two salaries we should be fine but even then we'll have to start seriously thinking in a few years' time about how we are going to manage raising children (we'd prefer it if one of us could stay at home or only work part-time), hence we're thinking about moving and living in a city that may allow us to save a little more money.

Thank you for the fashion industry explanation, Blake! I find it all very interesting. smile.gif

I guess we're not supposed to buy clothes we like but clothes that they decided we should buy.

Exactly! Very frustrating.

I don't understand why cuts and sizes are continuously being changed, either. I bought some cheap v-neck sweaters from H&M that I found very flattering and clung nicely without showing off every lump and bump. However I could only buy them in black as they were sold out of the red and purple ones.

A couple of months later again I was in H&M and they had plenty of red and purple V-necks. I nearly bought them then and there but decided to take the precaution of trying them on first. They looked the same but were completely different! The shoulders were too wide, the arms far, far too long and the body was shorter!

I've been feeling like a mess recently. Right now my sweater is all bobbly from too many washes, my trousers are looking a little faded and worn (they're 4-5 years old, though, so they've lasted well!) and my shoes are spattered in mud and a little scuffed.

Oh, and we must probably congratulate ourselves for having the most verbose thread on these forums. smile.gif

I love San Jose (and you'd all be welcome to visit!) but I don't know how long we'll remain there. It's just so expensive! I've said to Alex that I'd definitely prefer to stay on the west coast and I'd also prefer not to be too far north so we're currently looking at Portland, Oregon and Californian cities that are further inland at the moment.
Alex & RachelFemaleEngland2008-04-08 10:03:00
K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsJanuary Filers at the CSC - How are you doing?
I certainly don't follow fashion - I'll wear what suits me; sometimes it's in fashion and at other times it's not. It's actually rather frustrating when certain cuts aren't in style - for example, skinny-leg jeans overtaking boot-cut jeans in the market, or how it's impossible to find clothes in shades of dark red, purple and blue because lime green, orange and yellow is what it's currently all about. There's a huge difference between being fashionable and being stylish and unfortunately right now I feel that I'm currently neither.

I know the way to go is to hunt in the sales for past-season's clothing or search in charity shops, but unfortunately because I am an average size anything I would like is snatched up very, very quickly!

If I have the chance to I'd love to fly to Chicago to meet you all. smile.gif

And I'm lucky, too! Alex doesn't have a clue about fashion or stylish clothing so ultimately I could wear a paper bag and he'd still think I looked good. I'd rather it was that way round than having a man who insisted his wife always wear a skirt or had a matching handbag and heels (yes; apparently some men do care about that sort of thing!)

How did you find it working in the industry, Blake? Was it as cutthroat a business as I imagine?

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsJanuary Filers at the CSC - How are you doing?
Hehe - I think it's going to take me quite a long time, too.

I love seeing women in pretty, feminine clothes but I must admit I am not quite there yet myself! I've finally bought a pair of heels but I'm a little wobbly on my feet when wearing them. I love the skirt/court shoes combo for work, but since I walk to work and it's cold I nearly always wear trousers and flat shoes. I think well-applied make-up can really enhance one's features and I love how eyes look with a little eye-liner and mascara but I rarely make the effort to apply it myself. So I'm a bit of a hypocrite, really.

I'd love to have the money to go shopping and buy a few wardrobe classics - I'd like some v-neck sweaters that are proper cashmere and not acrylic, and I'd love a decent pair of boots and more A-line skirts, but every time I do go clothes shopping I end up buying clothes that are cheap and more suitable for work.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsJanuary Filers at the CSC - How are you doing?
It was my first visit to Stratford and, yes, it is really lovely! As a dutiful tourist I of course visited Shakespeare's birth place - interesting to see that the first two people to sign the first guestbook the house kept were from the US (Boston and Philadelphia, if anyone's curious). It's interesting to realise that people were touring far-off countries long before aeroplanes and railways made it easy to do so.

I know that snow can be a real nuisance and that it's probably a good thing that it didn't last long - icy slush can be dangerous! - but it was so pretty it was a shame that it couldn't even last just the one day.

MissYoko - I am glad that you had fun with the girls teaching them about how to make themselves beautiful! That's definitely one thing I missed out on with my own mother - she's not very feminine and has no clue about hair styling, make-up or fashion, and I was always very envious of girls who grew up knowing how to make the most of their features and apply the right shade of eyeshadow/find flattering cuts of clothing/etc.

Rachel, i'm sorry you're in hormone hell. It's tough stuff. I always just try to remember that 'this too shall pass'. I hope it does for you soon! smile.gif

Thank you!

That's the line I take, too - hormones are odd; I know why I am feeling a certain way and I know there's no particular reason I should feel that way, but I still can't seem to help myself from feeling that way!

MissYoko - welcome back! biggrin.gif I am glad you had a good time. It's always really, really sad having to part again, though. Thank goodness this wait is the last for all of us!

I had a good time in Stratford-Upon-Avon with my parents + twins + dogs. On Sunday morning my mother woke us up saying, 'it's snowed!' Snow in April is very, very rare indeed but she wasn't lying. It was beautiful. Three inches of soft, powdery snow covering everything; a real winter wonderland. We drove through the countryside looking for a place to walk the dogs and it was so serene.

Of course, this being England it was all gone by 11 am. sad.gif

The dogs loved the River Avon. The water level was nice and high but there was no strong current, so we threw sticks in for them and they would swim and fetch them. Lara is a real pro; she keeps her nose inline with the water and doesn't move too much so she appears to glide effortlessly through the water. Kirtley, on the other hand, is a real dog paddler. He keeps his nose up high and splashes with his front paws and never gets anywhere. He would wait near the bank until Lara had fetched the stick and then he would grab it out of her mouth and return it to us.

Yesterday we again threw in sticks for them and they swam a little and then we decided that we'd walk on a bit further. The poor dogs were desperate to get back into the water (heaven knows why, it was freezing). They kept peering over the sides of the bridges and whining. They went ballistic when my dad decided to play pooh-sticks; had to watch as we dropped sticks into the water and they couldn't get to them. Eventually they found a way through the nettles and over a six-foot-high fence down to the river bank, and we had a real problem getting them to get back up to us!

Yes - I think everyone must receive that glazed look from their friends and acquaintances at least once through the visa process.

I just don't want to become one of those people who, every time you talk to them, has changed their life ambition; the type of people who sometimes you just want to say, 'make up your mind already!' to. Alex and I have many ideas but few of them are going to come to fruition. We've said we may be married in October or February. We may stay in San Jose or move to Oregon or Washington. I may try and get an architectural job or I may continue to pursue administrative/PA work. But you are right - I am certainly not alone, and I really am grateful to all of you for listening to me. You guys are fabulous!

Ah, my boss is bad. Bad! He's bought me a milk chocolate Lindt bunny!

Cheers to you girl! I admire your self control. If it was me..... well, i think I will just bite my tongue right now whistling.gif

She is probably thinking she is doing you a great favor by taking over the planning since she feels you can't do it because you are still in the UK and of course that is probably a blessing since you will have lesser things to worry... but i do hope you will be able to tell her what you really want to happen on your wedding and just how many people you want there. After all, it is still your wedding... and i also hope your FMIL will not get carried away with planning and then end up doing everything the exact way she wants it. unsure.gif

I'm not too worried about her doing it her way - well, maybe apart from the pot-luck. Maybe I should give her e-mail address to my mother and the two of them can duke it out instead. laughing.gif

I am worried that she won't believe me when I say what I truly want. She always thinks I am just trying to be polite when I say that I have no preference or want something cheap.

I meant I would think that Alex would do that guest list for his family, and you would do yours. Bryan seems willing to choose who is going to come from his family.
Maybe "I really have no idea right now, but I'm going to think of it" would be better than "I don't care" wink.gif

Yes - you're right! Argh! If only I had a firm wedding date. smile.gif

Alex is fairly flexible re. wedding guests - I'm sure he'll decide who to invite amongst his friends/co-workers but I think his mother will be organising the family invites. Her side of the family is rather large and if you invite one you have to invite them all. But that's okay because I've met his mother's family and they are all awesome and friendly people. Not a single person amongst them who might be the embarrassing/drunk/badly dressed guest. We're very lucky!

Blake - NO you are not badly off! Positive thinking, people! I won't allow any negativity in here wink.gif

Well...her family is Alex's too! But she's drawing up the guest list for her side of the family.

She says that is why she wants to do a pot luck wedding, so that everyone can be fed at little cost to ourselves. I'm a bit concerned about how they'll squeeze 50-70 people into their house, though!

She's sent me an e-mail full of questions (what type of cake? Music? Flowers?) and I almost want to send one back saying 'I don't care!' tongue.gif

Me too.

That's strange about the birth certificates only being valid for 3-6 months. Ours are valid for life over here.

I ordered three copies of my birth certificate months and months ago!

I also applied for a provisional driving license because I mean to book some lessons before I leave, but also because I need proof of where I live for the police certificate (I also ordered a bank statement from my bank with my address on for this purpose).

I won't get the police certificate until I receive my NoA2, because it is only valid for six months.

I'd love to visit, too - but like you said, it just isn't worth it money-wise.

Huggleslut.com??

Do I even want to know? tongue.gif haha

It's a gimmick site I created back in the day. Look at the images on the front page. Aren't they cute? biggrin.gif

Can fully sympathise there - I've had 7 moves in 7 years myself! 'Settle down' - sounds like a dream to me!

I've never -ahem- 'acquired' pub glasses myself, but my friends are terrible - my housemate has actually worn wide-leg jeans with huge pockets to the pub before for the express purpose of taking a couple of pint glasses. I have a couple of Stella Artois glasses that a former co-worker gave me; one day, when I was planning to buy some glasses, she said, 'don't be ridiculous! You don't have to buy them! My husband works in a pub, I'll get him to give you a couple' - and she did! Brand new pint glasses wrapped in individual boxes.

Woo - it's been 80 days since our petition was mailed! We really could start to see some approvals next month. smile.gif I've created a little count-up page; having a ticker in a signature isn't enough. tongue.gif

Actually, we could really, really use any gifts we're given. We'll be starting off with nothing. First marriage for both of us and Alex hasn't even left home yet! So at least I won't feel too guilty, as I probably would if we already had a household full of stuff and were receiving duplicates/extras.

Ooh, it's going to be exciting biggrin.gif I'm a little tired of the cheap, second-hand goods that I've been used to for the past seven years since leaving my hometown to attend university. Chipped plates, blunt knives and a cupboard full of glasses pilfered from local pubs and novelty mugs are de rigeur amongst students and recent graduates. laughing.gif

From what I have read/heard it's largely dependent on where you live - some states/cities have a tradition of giving money whereas people living elsewhere will consider it a serious breach of etiquette.

Registries seem fairly standard these days; I even did a survey on Facebook to see what my friends and family thought and the only person who said they found registries vulgar was my Japanese friend.

Alex wrote in an e-mail last night:

My parents are adamant about my side of the family buying us presents for the wedding - I think you not wanting to accept presents is a battle that just won't be won, unfortunately. I'll let you make up the registry, though, and we'll only put stuff that we could actually need, like kitchen stuff, instead of stuff we'd want (I'm sure people would tend towards things we'd need anyway).

This makes me feel old. I'm definitely at the stage where the 'stuff I'd want' IS practical kitchen/dinner ware. laughing.gif

Oh - I'm not expecting presents anyway, which makes it doubly-worse that my future-MIL wants us to make a registry too!

Thank you for the good luck wishes, dbears - and aren't our men silly. Sometimes having a webcam isn't necessarily a good thing, because no one does the whole pouty-face puppy-dog-eyes better than Alex tongue.gif
