Me too... did you guys read the thread? Some people are being a little harsh. It's precious to look at all those a little less "weathered" than we (the july filers) are - but some ppl on there are just rude.

Well they definitely go too far on that thread (as usual around VJ). But I don't find the thread precious either. The people that obviously don't look around a few minutes before posting comments and questions ... well, I just don't make time for those people. One click on timelines gives you the estimate, showing you that one month isn't reality. One click on K-1 Progress Reports shows people waiting over a year. I won't rub it in their face, but I don't pity them either.

Anyhow, how's everyone doing?

If you're barely meeting the minimum and have few assets, you might qualify for a waiver of the fee. If you do a VJ search, there's several mentions of it. I have it bookmarked at home (I'm on campus atm). Likely something I'll request (I can show my big fat student loan debt to help tongue.gif ).

WOW thanks girl!!!!!!!!! WOOT!
you rock

OMG i know I got to work and broke down about it...I thought wow I cant imagine if I lost kai then I cried harder

yes! i was kinda irritable the past couple days (for no good reason, just in a mood) and not in the mood to talk much with my fiance. when i read her story i was bawling! i immediately got in contact with my love and told him how much i love him, how grateful I am for him!
It could happen to any of us! I hope if anything this will help us appreciate every person we have in our life because they can be gone just like that. we are all so blessed beyond measure!!

Jenny,

Have you guys returned your P3 yet?

not yet. he is done with all the forms, he just needs his 2x2 photos, hes says he needs to send one in with pack 3. is this right? i didnt think so but he said yes. he cant get to a photo shop yet because he works looong hours n needs to wait til saturday. ugh! i want to send it in already!

He doesn't need to send a photo in with pkt3, just take them all to the interview.
Get the pkt sent NOW!! lol

Are u sure? He said he needs to glue a pic to his ds-156, i said thats for interview, he said he needs to now. we are almost getting in a fight over this! sad.gif

Have they changed the forms since we sent ours back? Not heard of gluing the pic to the 156?
As far as what we did - he doesn't send it in.... he takes them with him to the interview and they staple it to ppwk and have him sign his name over it.
Have him read a bit on VJ - maybe reading what went on with ppl that actually went through the process will help him?

Can't wait till your POE date is up too!!!!

here is a sample form: http://www.visajourn...Form-DS-156.pdf. page 1 on the right. now he is sending me embassy webpages. haha
i think u guys are right but he is adamant so i'll just let him be right haha.

"DO NOT WRITE IN THIS SPACE"

it says they'll glue or staple it there... but that's for them to do. If nothing else, ask him to bring them with and then tell the person at the window... his fiance and the crazy ppl on vj told him not to glue it - is that right? LOL and see what they say. smile.gif We didn't do it, that whole right side seems to be for 'office use'.

Isn't it crazy how insane they make us - for fear of messing up?!?!

Andy put his pic on there himself and it was not an issue.

I received my police certificate back within the 10days think it only took 7days!

You will be fine holding off on pkt3 for a few weeks, it hasn't been that long since you received it. I know of people that received it and didn't send it back for 6weeks.

Thats a relief thanks! OK, so if you guys can remember that far back to what you sent your SO for the interview, I am sending him:
evidence:
about 6 or so IM chats with varying dates, (is that enough?)
cell phone records of our texts for every month since August,
a couple things that say "call ended" on our IM thing (since my call logs werent saved on yahoo for some reason, tho i checked "save history". DOH!), boarding passes from both our visits,
about 10 pictures of us together (some from his 2nd visit here and some from my 2nd visit there)
receipts of purchases I made in England.
Plus he will include cards I sent him for bday, christmas, Valentine's. (I dont want to send the ones he got me...dont want to lose them). a couple "congrats on your engagement" cards we received from ppl.
Is this enough??

Copy of my passport and birth certificate.
New letters of intent
copy of noa2
2 new passport-style photos of me. (he is getting 8 of himself to be safe! laughing.gif)

Affidavit of support, tax transcripts for 2006-2008 and W2s for those years.
Letter from my employer. (I made 24k last year, is this good enough or should i send in bank letter to be really safe?)
paycheck stubs

then he is doing his forms, police records, letter of intent, checklist, passport photos (8!), his birth certificate, his medical, passport.

Ok, sound ok??? Anything else? I sure appreciate it! thanks!

one more Q he had. the photos he needs (2x2inch US size). He said UK size is different. (35mm by 45 mm) Is the latter size ok?

Andy had pictures and a couple cards, and they didn't want to see any of it (pretty common too, if you read the embassy reviews).

The passport pictures -- if you're not sure, just take those at the embassy. For some reason they made Andy redo his without his glasses, which baffled me since they made him wear them the first time since they're his usual. Most embassies have photo booths there for that.

You only need 1 tax year. Tell him not to volunteer extra (tax years, bank letter, etc) unless they ask for it. The more you provide the more they're allowed to request.

Sounds like you're overprepared. Best of luck!

Well, we just got the run around by ANOTHER civil surgeon, and coincidentally the last one in our city. They tried arguing with us that we had to do the full medical exam, even though we showed them the I-693 instructions and specially highlighted the K-1 visa portion. We contested and asked why they'd refuse to operate the way USCIS mandates they do, and the physician said, "We do things our way around here. Go elsewhere." and walked away. We were like, "It's fine. We'll just pay the extra fees and get this over with" but they refused to see us. Needless to say, we're both furious and reported him to the USCIS.

I highly recommend you guys start reporting these physicians who are refusing to do I-863 the way the government mandates. I think if enough of us started making calls, we'd see more action on this front.

Anyhow, question for those of you who used Dr. Arnold. Did you have a TB test done? Was it done by a different civil surgeon or just another physician? Did Dr. Arnold transcribe the TB test results, or did you just send in a copy that another physician completed with your AOS forms? We're not sure how TB fits into this.

I thought AOS was supposed to be easy, but it's quickly turned into a nightmare for us. I'm a full time student and absolutely cannot take a day off of class to drive 3 hours away to try our luck with the other nearest civil surgeons. We're considering mailing off our application without the I-863 (just using the DS form he got in London) and mailing the I-863 later on once we get it back from Dr. Arnold. Does this sound reasonable?

Sorry for the rant...I'm still shaking with anger.

Haven't done this (obviously) yet, but from what I've read around VJ some people mailed Dr. Arnold their stuff to have it transcribed. So obviously no additional tests. And unless it's been too long, you shouldn't have to.

And on a side note, the whole Dr. Arnold thing creeps me out. He was my ex-husband's family doctor. blink.gif

We should all get a certificate to hang on the wall when we finish the process. So and so and their spouse survived USCIS (twice or more times) and the State Department. Your ability to deal with bureaucracy is to be comended...

For those of you who had your DS vaccination form transferred to the I693 (how pointless is that, seriously?), did anyone try to tell you your vaccinations were incomplete? I know all of us London embassy people went to the same place and likely have the same form.

Sebastian and I went into the civil surgeon's yesterday and even though it says "Series completed" next to his tetanus shots (as well as all other relevant shots), they tried to tell him he had to repeat the whole tetanus series. The receptionist was beyond nasty to us and although I'm usually an overly polite customer, she was being so demeaning that I interrupted her in mid-sentence, told her we'd take our business elsewhere, and slammed the door. This delays AOS yet another week while we wait for an appointment at the one other civil surgeon around here. Don't get me wrong, we're exceptionally grateful that we're finally together and married- but with the economy being so horrible it would be nice if he could start looking for serious work.

If this is better suited in an AOS thread, I'll move it but I know a few of you were talking about vaccination stuff last week.

You'd better not disappear on us! I think you posted in just the right place. Sorry to hear you're having issues with this, although I've definitely seen similar issues with vaccination transfers. Just one more bit of stupidity in this process.

I agree with Aubrey. Let' stick together smile.gif It's helpful for me to see your AOS questions. I won't start that until late June but I still like to see your comments and questions.

Aubrey, I looked at your website and your work looks very similar to what the designers at my job produce. We don't have any openings now but if I hear something I'll let you know. Our designers are always swamped with work. I'm not sure if you're ok with relocating for a job but we have offices all over the country. Have you tried looking at really big companies with internal graphics departments? The designers here are always crazy busy but I think they enjoy what they do and they have opportunities to work with really well-known companies. I'm pretty sure that they are fairly compensated. I'll keep you posted.

Cool, you are awesome! And yeah, I already know I have to move for work. As long as I don't end up back in Texas, I'll pretty much move where ever for the right job. I've moved cross-country once, I can do it again. Poor Andy will probably be moving twice in one year. tongue.gif

I have no idea what to hope for--I don't want to start freaking out when it doesn't come as expected! We're hoping that Spurs can start classes at my university in January, so ideally everything could be done by then, but it's looking less likely by the day. sad.gif Ah well--we'll just do our best to stay patient and hope that we get sorted soon!!!

Have any of you thought about making wedding plans yet?

I'm not a June filer, but I thought I'd give you a heads up. Have you talked directly with the university about your plans? Typically they don't accept enrollment unless the person is a greencard holder unless that person files as an international student (and for the appropriate student visa). Not to mention you're going to pay out of state tuition until your hubby has permanent residency. I looked into this stuff closely when my SO was looking to do the same, and we had to postpone our hopes for this for awhile.

Luckily for us it's all sorted pretty easily--I'm on faculty, so he has a tuition waiver and thus we don't have to worry about any of that. Coming in on a K1 visa is fine--he can start before we adjust status or anything. Basically, as long as we're married by the second week of classes (our last add date) he can immediately enroll. I have taken to referring to this as my $20K/year raise whistling.gif

Gee, I wish I was so fortunate with that situation. smile.gif

Typically they don't accept enrollment unless the person is a greencard holder unless that person files as an international student (and for the appropriate student visa). Not to mention you're going to pay out of state tuition until your hubby has permanent residency. I looked into this stuff closely when my SO was looking to do the same, and we had to postpone our hopes for this for awhile.

do u guys think my SO will be here befoer 09?

like late dec?

by the way, the immigration timeline is at june 14 now. . .

No your SO will not be here THAT soon. No one in dec for CSC will see that. We will see IF we are all lucky the end of January to the end of February.

Based on timeline data, your I129f may be adjudicated between November 21, 2008 and November 27, 2008*.
This means California MIGHT (compared to other VJ members) approve the NOA2 by this time. Sometimes it is even a month later and it depends on other factors as well. THEN you have about 1 to 2 months for the medical and interview.
SO expect Jan OR feb my dear.

No one can know that. Maybe we will be approved in 3 months and then it depends of your embassy. I know for exemple that France is not too bad... So who knows ? It is 80% or 90% sure that we won't be approved before end of november but well lets be positive !

Have all your documents ready for your interview, and request an appointment that's "ASAP." Call if you're not satisifed with your date. But don't make special plans that your SO will be there before the year's end. Often it takes, as Cham said, 1-2 months after NOA2 before receiving the visa.

Best of luck, we all want our SOs here for the holidays. I know it's unlikely, so I'm not getting my hopes up.

she doesn't have a visa, she's on the Visa Waiver Program. They are allowed 90 days to stay if that's what you mean. I understand she can't overstay, but sending in the I-129F while she is here is my primary concern. I can't stand being away from her and trying to do this papers alone is so depressing.

Sending it while she's in the US is fine. There's a spot on the form to explain that she's in the US and the circumstances. Did that for my fiancé while he was here, and we were approved with no problems. Just be sure that she doesn't overstay.

We have confirmation that they got the package... You are so lucky Stinky Monkey you have your NOA1 and being touched already. Ill keep posted ok.

It sounds like you're in the same boat as those of us who filed in July. None of us have gotten our checks cashed either/NOA1. No idea what the delay is, but it's definitely not just you.

Hey Im just curious what is the total price for the k1 visa after everything is said and done.

I-129F petition - $455
Visa fee - $131
Medical exam - varies by country
Visa delivery fee - varies by country
Document translation - varies if needed
Adjustment of status to greencard - $1010
Removal of conditions (2nd greencard) - $535

Having your SO live with you - Priceless

+ cost to travel to consulate for visa interview
+ cost to travel to AOS interview
+ cost of copies, getting birth certificates, and other documents

... basically, it's hella expensive.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Case Filing and Progress ReportsHow to deal with missing your fiance?
My husband and I did K-1, and we Skyped every day and found online games to play together. There are lots of them out there for free. I can recommend some websites if you're interested (send me a PM). Even with that, it's normal to cry and feel pain about being apart, even when you are getting to talk to each other and see each other through the cam every day. It's just not the same as being together, and it's okay to feel bad as long as you don't let it become the only feeling.

When you're not spending that time with your fiancé, try to keep busy. The busier I was, the easier it was to get through the time, and the same for him. Ask for extra hours at work (if you work), or ask your family/friends if they need help on a project around the house. Learn how to do something new and practice, or start exercising outdoors or at the gym. The easiest time for me was when I was so busy I could barely have time for sleep and see my man.

Best wishes and hang in there. It's not easy, but hopefully you picked the right person and it'll all be worth it in the end. I know my husband and I cherish every day together in a way that most other couples can't understand.

Doing pretty good. I just finished my first public health course with what I am hoping is an A or A-. My wife is starting a phlebotomy course this weekend. Other than that, just normal stuff. We need to find a new apartment by the end of June.

It's funny how much more work cares about you when you put in your 2 week notice. My place works the same way. I hope things work out for you guys. :)

I haven't seen anything from any other July 08 Filers.

Well, I don't hang around VJ much anymore. The new site... well, I hate it. Everything is jumbo sized.

Anyway, I don't remember if I mentioned or not, but I quit that job I got after 3 days (and the other designer did too, who'd started the week prior). It was a nightmare place.

Hubby is still working happily over at Valve. Still not an employee (he is a contractor for now), but no idea when that might happen. Will be nice if they get around to it, seeing as right now there is no tax withheld (making budgeting... uhm impossible), no medical/dental/anything except his nice pay per hour. We have super shitty individual insurance, because anything else costs too much.

Since I quit I've been looking again, of course. In the meantime, I've been doing odd jobs, so it hasn't been too bad. Monday I start a 2 week (possibly longer) contract with Costco. Hoping I land something stable soon, even if part time, because the contract thing isn't really my cup of tea.

Also, I didn't get in to UW or RISD (I applied for graduate school, remember?), but got accepted to UH. They wanted me lots; offered me scholarships up the wazoo, but I'd applied in December before Andy got his job. As you guys probably understand, living apart from him at this point is no option after our visa journey, and him quitting his job would be down right stupid (come on, how often do you get a GERMAN support job where you get to play test games, free food, flexible hours, and get paid almost twice the market rate?). So... looks like I have to pass up a great opportunity. At least it was a nice ego boost. :P

Did anyone do something special for your 1 year anniversary? Ours is still 2 months away, but it's pretty exciting. I couldn't ask for a better marriage, I'm so happy!

admittedly, we don't come on here too often anymore, especially considering that many of us have facebook pages. I'm sure we will start coming back again when the next bout with USCIS comes along...

Our anniversary is next Wednesday - time has FLOWN by! Amazing how the speed of time changes when your living life instead of waiting for it to begin!

I don't want to be depressing - but we shared the news with everyone in the first place so I thought it fair to share this on here too... We had a miscarriage before Christmas. No need for mentions.. we're ok now and happily trying again :)

One thing I will ask for is some prayers! I have a job interview next Friday - Senior Personnel in the Epidemiology Dept for Flagler County Dept. of Health. This would be FANTASTIC for us as I'd have a normal 9-5 job and be home with the kids nights and weekends. Far cry from my normal 5-6 days a week working from 2p-11p. Also it has benefits and we have no insurance now.... So I'm really excited!!! Prayers welcome!!
And for you facebook'ers - plz no mention of the job interview on there... I have ppl i currently work with on there and I don't want the word to get out :)
Thanks!!!

well... Ryan is calling!! Have a great day everyone!!!

Good luck! I know how tough it is having opposite schedules. I wish you two all the best!!

I also got a job and start Monday as a graphic designer for MAQ Software.

It's awesome to see anniversaries coming around. The last almost 8 months for us has flown by. I finally set this thread up for an email subscription because the posts are so spotty, and I don't want to miss what's going on.

Congrats on Jeremy's permanent position! That's wonderful news. :dancing:

Andy got the job at Valve. It's a contractor position to start, which means no benefits for now and hourly wage. But it's a good hourly wage and he gets free parking in downtown Bellevue (which would be 18/day, no small change!), free breakfast/snacks/lunches, and a fully unlocked Steam account (some $10K worth of games)... so it's crazy good. Hopefully in a few months it turns into a salaried position, like it has for most of their 250 or so employees. All the salaried employees are going to Maui in a few weeks for a company vacation... JEALOUS! But I think the best part is that he gets to hang out with 3 other native Germans in his department.

I'm still looking for a design job, but have had a few leads so far, which is better than I'd been doing before. Still waiting to hear back on graduate school acceptance, too. Overall, we're doing really great though.

How is everyone? Did anyone hear from ErinmeetsJohnny? How is everyone doing with their employment situations?

I think we're seeing some people drop off from VJ. I imagine they might come around again when removing conditions time arrives. I'm glad I added several people here on FB to keep in touch. PM me if you want to exchange Facebook contacts if you haven't already.

Andy and I are so happy to be together. I am amazed at what a great man he is every day. Since I was married once before, I appreciate it so much more (and of course also because of the entire visa journey, too). He goes to this crummy job working the graveyard shift and never complains. I am really lucky. He has made it to round 3 of the interviews for the German-speaking IT job at Valve, and will have another interview on the 18th - this time with the entire international support/translations staff, about a dozen people. We are so hopeful; it'd be a nice salaried position at a company he just loves.

Have any of you started figuring out your tax situation? We have started and it is so confusing - particularly the foreign income exclusion...

http://taxes.about.com/od/taxhelp/a/ForeignIncome.htm

By the way, Andy finally got a job (a low wage freight job at Winco Foods), and then got two phone calls for interviews with Valve software and Boeing for technical support. So now we're crossing fingers to hope he gets one of those jobs. The Valve job is especially interesting, as it requires a native German speaker for phone/technical support.

As for me, my temp job finally ended last Friday. Everyone but the owner wanted me to stay, and it was just about money/lack of work in the short term. Either way, I filed for unemployment and am looking again. I spent over an hour on the phone for unemployment sign-up, as because I worked in 2 states I was not able to sign up online. Sheesh. I also applied to graduate schools, and I won't hear back about that until March.

I hope everyone is well!

We skipped the civil surgeon stuff in the U.S. entirely (he did not need any additional vaccines, though), and we did not get an RFE.

The interview went fine. We sat around for over an hour past our scheduled interview time, with almost nobody else left, starting to wonder if we'd been skipped. It lasted 15 minutes and would have been faster if the guy wasn't interrupted by phone calls.

Some questions he asked:
How did we meet?
What is "Guild Wars?" (asked many specifics about how the game operates and such)
When was that?
When did we marry?
Do you have photos of the occasion?
Who are these people in the pictures?
Am I working? Is he working? What did he do in Germany?
Were either of you married before?
Any children?
Did you have any more vaccinations since you entered the U.S./ did he still need any?
Where are you living?
Who lives with you?
Where did he learn to speak English?

Approval, green card in 2-4 weeks. Glad we're done with this #######.

Grats on the card, sorry about the promotion. That's a bummer. Not sure what job you have, but think carefully before you jump ship in this economy!

No word still from the UTEP job. Losing hope, but I should hear something either way, one would think. It's very depressing.

I'd think not hearing something right away could be a good sign. It seems like people who don't qualify or aren't wanted usually find out pretty fast.

If I bailed on my job it would be because I have another full time one waiting or some stipend set-up for grad school. I'm worried about staying in one position too long and then having to explain why that happened in the future. I have a science based degree. whistling.gif

How many years have you been in your position? To an extent, it can be a positive (showing loyalty, for example). You can also explain such long durations by family necessity and (now) a ####### economy. Does your job offer tuition reimbursement? biggrin.gif

That might be about the job, but I'm not sure. The man who interviewed me said he would call Friday or Monday (last Friday, not yesterday's Friday), so I wonder. At the same time, they've been amazingly slow through out this entire process (taking a month after portfolios were submitted, for example), so it's possible. It's so hard though waiting around and wondering; this seems like the perfect job for me!
