Aww, I bet you're so excited Dawn!

In other great news, Sebastian found a job! It's only part time and doesn't pay quite as well as we'd hoped, but it's in his field and directly across the street from our apartment so there's no transport worries with him not having a car (or a drivers license). And our AOS was touched today, which means someone is at least looking at the green card application.

I hope things are going well with all of you! xx

That's great news! The hardest step for immigrants is landing that first job without any U.S. references. Congratulations!

hi all

how is all???

mohammedwalks doing okay..stressed LOL

Good to hear, Meri. I hope it's working out for you. Keep us in the loop. smile.gif

Not much different here, except a few headaches. Andy's last work day will be the 29th, and after discovering the miles we have put together I wanted to use them for a discount on his airfare (30K miles = $300 off). But that's it's own headache, as Delta/NWA is giving me such terrible customer care in trying to transfer the miles to one place. So until I get that figured out, I can't book a ticket.

The only two things I've heard in the job arena are a rebuff from a staffing agency (I'm not "local" enough) and notice that their e-mail system blocked my application attachments and to mail it to them. I remember this feeling well; the waiting and applying and feeling discouraged. Somehow it never gets any easier.

I asked my folks to keep an eye out for freelance opportunities for me, and I'm asking you guys for the same. If you know anyone that needs a logo, letterhead, a flyer, poster, newsletter, small business website, etc., I'd appreciate it if you sent them my way. I'll give my full attention and an ultra-cheap rate in return for my getting some additional experience under my belt. I can always send the print job to their local print/copy shop.

It's so good to see you all getting through your AOS process swiftly. I've been surprised how soon some of the EAD's are going through. A few months ago everyone was seeing 90 days. Now I'm regularly seeing 40-60 days. I wonder if USCIS is getting more efficient or if they're just seeing fewer applications.

That made me laugh. We're just swamped with wedding plans, moving plans, school plans and job plans so not alot of VJ. Strangely, I did meet a person in my neighborhood who is doing a K1 for his fiancee from France (when we were out walking last night) ...told him about VJ. Too bad there isn't some sort of finders fee. Even more strange was that his fiancee knows people my fiancee knows in Geneve. It is strange how small the world is...

Good! Then my work here is done. star_smile.gif

Grad school is the backup plan, but still doesn't help with the experience issue. Everyone's looking for 2-4 years experience, so all I can do is relate my semester at a student magazine and my teaching computer apps and cross my fingers. It's not good. And applications for grad school for the fall are long past due; the good schools in my field don't budge their deadlines, and are all in feb or march. So I'll apply if I'm still jobless in December, it's always been the backup plan, but don't know how I'm going to survive financially if that's the case. =/

Mohammedwalks: Still waiting for my reunion. Glad everything is going so well for you, especially after your scare.

Question for you guys: How did you deal with your non-USC's finances? Andy and I are trying to figure out how best to access his money and close his account once he's in the U.S., but coming up short on ideas. His current bank does not even offer online banking...

Does he have a credit card that draws money directly out of his bank account? These can be used in an ATM, although i had to advise the bank that i would be in the US or they would have frozen the card for security.

I transferred money to my account here before i left the UK.

What service did you use for the transfer?

Quick update before I crash for the night.
Still job hunting, and heard nothing so far. 15 apps, 1 cold email, and 1 staffing firm app later. More cold emails and apps to come. Looking and writing cover letters, etc is time consuming, and it's slim-pickings out there. A mere sampling of crazy places I've applied to: Minneapolis, Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, Iola Wisconsin, Framingham Massachusetts, and New York. I must be out of my mind on the last one. I haven't been insane enough yet to apply for anything in the vicinity of Texas and my mother yet, though.

Andy's going to finish out the month at his job and is going to figure out when his last day will be. It depends on when his folks can pick him up with his stuff, because it's too much to carry back on the train. We'll figure that out this weekend or Monday, depending on what they say, and then sometime next week book a ticket. Looks like a mid-July flight; a bit later than we hoped. I guess we'll get married at the end of July or beginning of August. Continuing to wait makes me feel like I'm losing my mind a little. I guess that explains New York.

I'm not sure, but it should say in the guides.

But, your birth certificate does not expire, so it will never matter how old it is.

Booo!!! so of course the people at the SSA office are rude and incompetent. Jeremy went this morning to get a ssn and he was told that he needed an EAD to get a ssn. He told her that he didn't and showed proof of that but she refused to give him a ssn. After arguing with her for awhile he said forget it and said that he'd go to another office. So that's where he is now. I told him to ask to speak with a supervisor if he gets the same BS again. grrrr. maybe i'll have to take a half day next week to yell at people tongue.gif awesomeness!

any advice on what we should do if he is refused again today?

This happens to a lot of people. It's just ignorance.

http://www.visajourn...h...t&p=2909826

Print the page from the SSA website (https://secure.ssa.g.../lnx/0100203500) and highlight the sections she's talking about in that post. That should remedy the problem, and if not ask for a supervisor and show it to them.

Loved your wedding dress. Congratulations to you both. smile.gif

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you find a job soon, Aubrey!

Have a wonderful wedding day, Kristen! I can't wait to see your pictures smile.gif.

Married life is pretty wonderful but it's definitely an adjustment. I'm not used to having zero time to myself and the whole quest for more independence thing kicks in every once in a while with Sebastian not being able to drive, work, etc. His EAD was approved last week but he's having a really hard time finding a job. But we're toughing it out!

Hope everything is well with you all!

Well, just remember that you don't have to lose yourself to become someone's wife. It's OK to take some time for yourself. I think it actually makes you appreciate the time you two have together.

Wow, the EAD average time is down to 60 days. I'm amazed. That's definitely good news, and I hope the trend continues!

Thanks for your well-wishes everyone!

@ErinMeetsJohny: The average times were going down last I looked, but still 2 1/2 months. This is why in my case Andy is still in Germany working. I can't imagine having to move in with my parents again. I hope yours are supportive. I'm sure the lack of privacy for two newlyweds is not much fun.

@Koakland: Yeah, we're still figuring on a move date at the beginning of July. No changes so far. Another month on the job for him, then moving back to his parents place for a few days to make final arrangements, get rid of stuff, etc. Can't book a ticket with uncertainty on my end concerning jobs, so it will be a last minute thing.

@Cham: I'm hanging in there. I spent the last two days glued to the computer re-working my website, as some of the job boards have gotten me a few more hits than usual. There aren't many jobs to apply for right now, as everyone wants 2-3 years+ experience. You know, same story you always hear. Next week I'll start sending out stuff cold on days I can't find listings. Wish me luck. Things will get ugly in a few months if I'm not hired.

Congrats Juliette! biggrin.gif

Enjoy your snuggle time, Corinthians.

Hope you get it sorted out, PBJ.

I've been applying for jobs, editing my work, and trying to get an overhaul of my website up before the weekend. I think Andy and I are both losing our minds with the distance right now. I think the long hours at a job he doesn't like and living in a strange place has just made it that much more difficult for him. And for me, it's frustrating to finally have a little time on my hands and not be able to spend it with him.

How are our newlywed couples doing here? Still in post-marital bliss, or are the realities of living in a new country showing yet?

Yes, I understand the 3 cats move will be an issue, but I'm sure you'll figure it out. I completely understand, too. You'd sooner cut off one of my limbs than separate me from my two munchkins! I can't imagine why so many people on VJ give up their animals to move to the US. They don't quarantine pets the way they used to, unless you're a high-risk country (a family friend had to give all her animals... count 'em 9 cats, 3 dogs, a horse, and fish when she and her husband got stationed in South Korea. Crazy.

Bad news guys.
"your visa has been denied under section 212(a)(2)(a)(1) of the immigration act A waiver of the applicable is available."

I dont know what this means, he has old convictions, which we were worried about, but i think 212 is lack of proof of relationship? my fiance told me: "I dont qualify for automatic approval its up to homeland security to approve me a waiver, only this time we both have to write letters explaining why a denial would cause extreme hardship, more forms to fill, $538 to pay, at least 15 weeks more to wait, "

We are eligible for a waiver but have to prove extreme hardship.

I am utterly heartbroken and crushed. He cannot even visit me til we get approved or denied. I am gutted! I dont know what to do! I cant be with the man i love! I have to go cry now!
thank u all for your well wishes!

Jenny

after Goggling 212(a)(2)(a)(1) it looks like it is a criminal thing. Still sucks... 15 more weeks... grumble

thank you! yes, he has a couple convictions from 12 yrs ago, we were worried about that. you think we still have chance? odds dont sound good about trying to prove extreme hardship since we dont have kids or anything, but I cant live without him! cray5ol.gif cray5ol.gif cray5ol.gif i dont know wat to do...

I'm so sorry to read this. I wish you all the best with your waiver request. Is there any possibility of moving to his country if it doesn't go through?

I also agree that this might be a good time to seek out an experienced immigration attorney, since you're needing to write explanations and such.

I am in the final stages of sorting out papers for AOS, and have realised that my NOA2 ran out in April, this is ok isnt it? I believe this is required to show our status at USCIS.

Am now going to have a little achololic beverage to calm my panic....cheers everyone!!

I think you have 6 months to enter the USA and 90 days after you enter to get married. Beyond that I don't think it (NOA 2 date) matters. I vaguely remember reading something about having 6 months to file for AOS without being out of status to the point where you'll need a waiver. But, even if you did, you would get it. There are alot of people who write about waiting years to file for it and it seems like they turn out fine.

6 months for the visa date issue to use it, 90 days to get married, and you need NOA2 to adjust status. Do not throw it away.

Well on monday she gets a call from the counsualte to come for an appointment. she asked what should she bring and they say her passport. So naturally we are excited but nervous at the same time. She goes to the counsulate on wed. and they give her another interview. She says the interview was 45 min long ClockWatch2.gif . they asked her about me and my parents........everything was game, but she knows everything (even my social security number by heart ) so she answered all the questions well. Alhumduallah. After the interview the lady asked her for her passport and told her that they would call her in a few days. MY fiance asked " call me for what? " the lady smiled and said " your visa " my fiance said " really, sure, everything is ok " the lady responded " yes hen my fiance asked when will you call me? the lady said in about a week and my fiance left. Well well well......what a differnce 24 hours makes. she received a call on thursday (the next day after the second interview) from the counsualte and they told her to pick up her VISA TODAY!! I had to go to the office today and i wanted to leave early so i could be home to talk to her on the web cam, becasue i wanted to SEE the visa. But i had a stupid department meeting. When i got home i had her show me the visa and it finally hit me idea9dv.gif ......WE DID IT!! i did not want to post anything here until she had it in her hand.

Hello all,

Corinthians, Pb&jam, Aubrey

PLease forgive me........i am soooo sorry oops8rh.gif . i have just been cray5ol.gif lately. As you all know my fiance had her inerview on the 28th of april. there was only 3 people there that day so she did not have to wait to long for her turn. she had a white lady with glasses. she said she was nice. she asked her:
how we met?
what i did for a living
why she loved me?
what we have in common?
why she want to marry and american and not a moroccan?
had she spoke to my parents before?
does the families approve of the engagment?
where i live?
when was the last time i was there?
she asked for the engagment photos, emails, and conversations, then gave her a white sheet of paper that had a boxed checked. the boxed that was checked was other: we require nothing further at this time we will call you as we can proceed with your case...... blah blah blah(i cant remember exactly)
the lady also gave her her passport. on her passport there was a green ticket with a 5 digit number on it. it was perferated in the middle of the ticket. so it had 2 sides each with the same 5 digit number. the ticket was stapled to her passpot. the lady gave it to her and said we will call you soon.
im kinda smile.gif and sad.gif , because again i am in the dark about my fiances visa. i miss her so much and i hate not knowing when or if she will get her visa. people tell me that this is normal for morocco, but she is not a male and this is somewhat rare. inshallah everything will be fine. anyone have any advice or thoughts?? bad or good? thank you all for your support and oyu all are great people. wallahi i promise you all are. again thank you soo much for caring heart.gif

I am so sorry. sad.gif Did she answer all the questions OK? I don't know anything about that particular embassy to help you. I know other stuck in AP have been told repeatedly they must wait and senators etc haven't been able to help. It sucks, and I truly hope that you don't have to wait long!

We're without our SOs for different reasons, but you and I can sit and cray5ol.gif and bail out the boat together.

I took it as AP but the don't call us we'll call you thing sounded bad.

The original post on that thread, I kind of thought to myself, um, how could the fiance not know that (college, where born)?

I wish Mohammadwalks would come say hello here and let us know what happened. He was so excited before, and I can't imagine what went wrong.

Thinking about a job opening there, same field, more money, kind of a step up from where I am now. I've always been a little worried about Idaho though so I wanted an insiders opinion. whistling.gif

Sent you a PM.

@ Cham: Yes, he can definitely earn it in a few months at this job. His aunt is plenty aware of our situation, and that's the reason she agreed to let him work there (as a short-term thing). If they work him like last time (10-12 hour days), he should have plenty by July.

@ Koakland: Thanks doll, I'm trying to look out for both him and me. We have many of the same expenses in our future. The timing kinda sucks (would've been so much better months ago), but we're lucky that he finally will get to earn some money. I hope I get lucky with a design job in a reasonable time so we can "splurge" for a little ceremony when the time comes.

@ Shannon&Nick: That's pretty cool, I hope you guys win!

I can't afford to cover the extra expenses right now, so it's not an option. sad.gif

Beans & rice, raman and frosted flakes? innocent.gif I hope the time goes fast for you guys. With the economy like it is, this seems like a rough time to get anything done.

I feel a little like I'm the bad guy, but it's not like that. Right now my job isn't even covering my own expenses, and I have no guarantee of how many more hours they'll give me when I'm done with school in a few weeks. It may or may not be sufficient to cover my own rent, food, etc. I have even less guarantee of finding a design job in a reasonable time period given the current economy, so I can't assume anything there. But I have to have a little left in the bank for when I do because I'm going to have to move for any job I take, as there is nothing in this little town (which pales in comparison to my student loan debt). There's nothing left to cut, we're both eating cheap, not buying anything except essentials, and I'm stuck with above-average rent for a student because of my cats.

Given those conditions, I think it'd be irresponsible for me to bring Andy here right now when he's not allowed to work immediately. It sucks, but this is why I've been whining about his job-search difficulties since he left here in September -- he and I both knew we were going to need that money when the visa came. Going to school FT and working PT and putting together a portfolio has nearly killed me, and it still doesn't put us in a position where I can support him right now. That's just how it is, and I'll have to keep feeling jealous every time I see everyone posting their wedding notes and filing AOS information.

Sorry /rant. I'm doing the best I can.

We're not entirely sure. Between the flight, AOS fee (hoping to be granted a waiver, but no guarantee), living expenses, health insurance, etc for while he's not allowed to work (and while I'll most likely still be looking and barely scraping by with my job at Michael's), I figure he's going to need 3 or 4,000 dollars. The work days there tend to be long (10-12 hour shifts), so hopefully that will happen sooner than later. He won't have much expenses to speak of. I really hate all this money worry #######. It's hard for me, as until I divorced while enrolled in school I was never remotely in any financial worry before. And I could tell that Andy was trying to keep his spirits up, but he definitely is struggling with the concept of moving today out of his apartment but still not getting to come be with me.

Sounds brutal. It seems like a lot of people just put AOS off but if you wanna work, I guess that isn't an option.

Maybe you guys should just go for it once you can afford the flight?

Andy's been packing all weekend and is moving his stuff to his parent's house on Tuesday. Then taking just a bit next weekend when he moves east to his uncle's for his job. He starts next Monday (4th).

How long will he be working before he comes here?

Start or end of July?

Congrats to the newlywed couples! They say the first year is the hardest, and with cultural differences probably even more so. Let your love blossom this coming year.

I got back from Seattle last night, and the trip was definitely worthwhile (though pricey). Lots of compliments, but enough "suggestions" that I have to re-print 3/4 of my stuff (after I find the time to do those changes). One pro told me to go buy a laptop (to show my digital stuff on)... I just thought, "Yeah, with what money?" Anyway, all those changes have to wait now till after May 16th (graduation).

I keep looking at him, wondering if this is a reallly good dream or its real. He is lying there all curled up andI cant sleep...I just keeping brushing his hair with my fingers and looking at how beautiful and angelic he is to me.
He reminds me of the statue of david.I know CHEESY CHEESY

We now have 3 days till we are husband and wife. WOW WOW WOW
They would not let him have his SSI card but gave us paper to take to the Marriage license place so we could get that today...
SO was a lil upset over that but no big deal.

He wrote his mum and dad a letter and as you all know we had past issues because I am older and I am an american.
IF we told them he would have been a nervous wreck and his parents would have tried to stop him and lay a guilt trip
His dad was coming around to it..knowing he was leaving soon but made offers of things they could do so he would stay.
I wont go into details the horrid things they did to break us up because that is they past.

WE received this email from his father

It's Wednesday here and just saw your note. Just gone 3 days since we saw you last and we were just about to start calling the police and hospitals etc. .... been worried something shocking.Looked through the window in case you were sick or worse and the note scared the hell out of me (dad) till I read it. We understand now. We're both relieved to know you're ok. Hope you are safe and well. Are you in the states?
Im sure Brie and Dean will send their regards when they find out. We haven't said anything to Brie yet. She came home yesterday from the coast and we didn't see the need to have everyone worrying. Lets try and forget past problems mate. We just want you to be happy.
What are your plans? If you are in the US, what's your visa/permit status etc. Get in touch with us when you can. Will send you skype details when we've set it up again.
Lots of Love Mum and Dad.

Personally I about fell out of the chair! So he will write them back tomorrow and tell them we are getting married this weekend. I know it is something his mother does not want for him but I think we made leaps and bounds today.

SO we both feel good about it.

ANYWAY as soon as I get the pic back from my maid of honor ( her and her man took me to the airport)
I will show you all the HUG lol

All I know is YEP this journey was long, It was fustrating, scary, oh the list is long, but let me tell you. I would do it ALL over again JUST so I could have my kai home where he belongs.

KOAK WOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOO 20 days and counting!! I cant wait to see you both back together!
TO those who are still waiting..TRUST ME....when you FINALLY are back in each others arm...this journey will make you appreciate the one you love and YOU both will be so much stronger as a couple. IF we can all make it through this visa #######..we can handle ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hang in there..and heaps of prayers your way

I love you all!!
HUGSSSSSSSSSSS
Meri and Kai

Congrats, Meri. I hope things continue to improve with Kai's family. I know it's hard when not everyone is on board. Everyone always wants family support. At least you've got your VJ family support!

As for the SS #: it usually takes 2 weeks for K1's to show up in the database, and I know some folks have more difficulty getting a number after the marriage. I don't think Idaho even requires a SS# to get married anyway, from what I remember. His passport should suffice as identification to get a license and such.

I hope the weather holds up for you down the hill. It was so beautiful outside the last two days, and now they're talking about 50s again this weekend. Not sure about down there in Lewiston. Either way, I'm sure Kai will keep you warm, right?! Meri, are you on Facebook? You missed my photo expedition post with the sorority bikini-wearing girls tanning on top of a shed. Priceless classy Idaho!

Seattle in 3 days. Andy's move east is coming next week. 24 days till my schedule nightmare ends (graduation). Will update you all accordingly.

Hello VJs friends ! How are you guys ? I'm working a lot so I'm not around so much...
Nothing new on my side, waiting for Vegas to send me a certified copy of my marriage certificate so I can send my AOS. I will go to the doctor for the document also, I wanted to wait but I have a shot to get anyway so I will do both.

Hello my French friend smile.gif That's good that you're busy working. I'm concerned about Jeremy's job prospects once he comes here. I'm hoping that he can work the "French angle" somehow... Right now I'm setting my apartment up. Working on ways to "French it up" as you say smile.gif

Here are a few things:

Very cute links there! I love it! You should also consider adding some classic French art prints to add to the café feel... many many to choose from. I can't think of France and not think of art.

I FEEL SORRY FOR THIS PERSON

Me too... did you guys read the thread? Some people are being a little harsh. It's precious to look at all those a little less "weathered" than we (the july filers) are - but some ppl on there are just rude.

Well they definitely go too far on that thread (as usual around VJ). But I don't find the thread precious either. The people that obviously don't look around a few minutes before posting comments and questions ... well, I just don't make time for those people. One click on timelines gives you the estimate, showing you that one month isn't reality. One click on K-1 Progress Reports shows people waiting over a year. I won't rub it in their face, but I don't pity them either.

Anyhow, how's everyone doing?
