PhilippinesHow to call NVC..?
Believe me, during my time, I tried all means just to contact them may it be the toll free number to the local land line number but I had no luck in reaching them.. I know you just want to help your husband but it would be less tedious if you will let him call.

PhilippinesSeattle / Being Sick / Veggies

There are jeepneys in Seattle

Try hot, salt water gargling every 3 or 4 hours, it does help.

 Less - minus the jeepney

Yes I gargled salt water 3 times a day and it helped a little bit. But the antibiotics are the triggering factor for my recovery.
Actually, I am feeling a whole lot better now. I am just consuming the rest of the antibiotics that were prescribed to me for 10 days.

Wow! Glad to hear all your insights guys.

I'm feeling so good today. The weather in Seattle is sunny, still cold, but I am beginning to like it. Earlier, I was walking around the neighborhood to buy Diet Coke.. geeze! cravings :P

Humm.. about veggies. Oh well, it will really take a while to get used to eating it ..we will see in the long run. My fiance took me to the "Old Country Buffet" for a date and all sorts of American food were there. I enjoyed munching most of the food, so I guess it its not really true that I don't like eating Amercian food, maybe it't just because of the veggies - American Veggies - thats hindering me from eating it. :innocent:

We were lucky to have been given a slot at the country doctor's clinic as suggested by my mother-in-law to be. We were surprised to be accommodated without further ado specially so knowing that I just arrived in the US on a fiance visa. The staff took our word for it and gladly assigned a physician to see me. The Doctor treated me well and was very accommodating, in fact, we talked about issues not relating to strep throat at all.

I am beginning to feel okay and I can talk well now. I am hoping to feel normal at the end of this week, hopefully.

Thank you guys

Talking about veggies, then again, its something that I have outgrown, something that I have hated since birth. It's not like a hobby that I have forgotten in a long long time so it would be a walk in the park if I'll decide to doing it again. Believe me, I have been trying but its just so hard to swallow it.

Before I arrived, we already agreed on money matters. Most of his money will be spent for the wedding while my money was spent for my plane ticket and the rest of the K1 visa expenses from the visa application til I had my CFO seminar. He pretty much understands that its the only way we have right now because I still have yet to expedite my EAD.

I have been researching on possible doctors that we can go to. If you have a name in mind, please let me know. Thank you guys! /hug

PhilippinesSeattle / Being Sick / Veggies
It's been a while since I started a topic in VJ, tonight since I couldn't sleep because of my sickness I decided to make one.

For the first week of my life in Seattle WA, it was perfect. I love the weather where its so cold even if the sun is shining, bouncing on your head, love the way streets are organized, less traffic and most of all, I love the neighborhood, it looks like the one I had in Cebu, less jeepney and population, of course.

After few days of merry making, came the unexpected stuff, GETTING SICK. I was just surprised one morning when I woke up sick and my throat aching pervasively. I figured it was tonsillitis so I constantly took ibuprofen just to ease the pain out. My fiance has just started working so we couldn't go to the doctor for the "amox prescription." Right now I am just taking ibuprofen and benadryl along with sore throat candies.. and what not?! Oh well.. I really hope it will finally go away at the end of the week. Its so damn hard to swallow specially when I'm craving for food thats kinda hard to chew.

In so far as the food is concerned, it's really making me hard to adjust because I haven't eaten vegetables my entire life since birth. I just grew up eating fruits rather than vegies. I tried eating it at one point but shiz it's really the taste that I couldn't take. My fiance on the other hand, loves to eat asparagus, sweet onions, broccoli and the like.. this is where we insanely become incompatible. However, there are food that we love to eat without much problem - ice cream, fries, burger, adobo just to name a few. . .

Curious how most people here are able to work the relationship out despite the hindrances in terms of food, money, etc.. Feel free to share.

PhilippinesAffidavit of Support

hello just a quick question! regarding page 4 of form I-864 Affidavit of Support. we can't find the 3rd most recent ITR of my husband - 2007. we only have W2s and ITRs for 2008 and 2009. will it still be ok if we lack the 2007 ITR document?

anyone? thanks!

I know its better prepared than sorry but in my case I was only asked to provide the latest ITR of my fiance (for 2008). No other questions asked.

PhilippinesAffidavit of Support
During our time, my fiance was just recently employed and he didn't have any income for 2009 because he was laid off from work. Needless to say, his good enough proof for affidavit is only for the year 2008 where he was able to work full time and his income exceeded of whats required. We couldn't sleep hours and hours before the interview thinking about possible questions that might be raised. Guess 19th is our lucky day since during the interview his two years of previous income records weren't asked.. rather, the consul just asked for his recent tax returns which was last 2008.

Why 2008 and not 2009? I was prepared to tell the consul that my fiance has yet to receive his w2s from his previous company and that he has until march of 2010 to file for it.

That being said made me prove one thing - the consul plays a huge role in the approval of the case. I guess we all just have to take our chances..

I have read quite a lot of articles regarding co sponsors and surprisingly a huge number of couples were successful at the end of their journeys.. Although, theres always a remote possibility of being rejected but then again.. call it destiny if indeed it will come true.

PhilippinesVISA K1 Application

Hi to all;

My fiance is with me up to next week and we meet one agent here in Manila who will assist me during the preparation for my VISA application. I am not convinced by her, she told us alot of payment to be made to the USEM. Here are the details:

VISA Fee - Php 7,200
VISA Insurance - Php 6,900 - not sure about this

To all those who recently finished their K1 VISA process as of Feb 18, 2010, could you suggest and advise me on this. I dont really want to take an agent here. Are all these fees really necessary. Medical is not yet included here.

Based on my visa statics and experiences, here are the Fees I paid:

Visa Application Fee- 6,500 PHP
Visa Insurance? - not applicable
Documber Verification - not applicable
Medical Exam (SLMEC) - 10,800 PHP depending on the currency
Visa Delivery - 200-400 PHP depending on the location
Travel Tax - 1,620 PHP
PDOS Seminar - 600 PHP (400 PHP for the CFO Sticker, 200 for the seminar)

Good Luck!

PhilippinesCooking in the US?
I have found several sites that talk about Filipino recipes and so far, some of the ingredients are feasible. The thing is I'm just used to cooking food with magic sarap, it makes the food smell good and yummy. Oh well, I am just trying to be creative by trying to look for alternatives...

I would appreciate your ideas.

PhilippinesMarried life is great
Hi sage1. Its been a long time! :P

It's all part of the adjustment phase, once your neighbors will get used to seeing the both of you together.. they won't mind eventually :star: I haven't had that kind of experience in WA, most of the people here are friendly. It's your life and not theirs.. just enjoy the honeymoon stage and smile, when you worry, you will be depressed, if you will be depressed you lose one sperm ------ "giggles"

Our wedding will be in Vegas on March 20, 2009.

Give my regards to your wife.

PhilippinesCebu over Easter

So I am taking a week to go visit Josephine I arrive on Sunday 3/28. I know only a week!! unfortunately the company I work for gives me 3 weeks 1 week at a time and did not approve my request for an extra unpaid week.

We will be going on Monday to Cebu the plan is to visit the graves of her parents and where she was raised. We will also visit her younger sister and 2 brothers.

We will be there 3 nights returning to Cavite on Thursday after noon.

my problem is I want to make our evenings as romantic as possible; here is what I want to do.

1. I have a prepared statement to read when at her parents grave site asking for their blessing on our future marriage a friend is translating to Tagalog
(This is a surprise; do you think it would make her happy and is there any advice on what I should say?)

2. I want to pick a nice hotel to stay in and pamper her such as visits to spas (this is also a surprise)

3 I want to have romantic dinners with her each night maybe a club to dance

4 She has us roaming around on Wednesday visiting a few sites like the Chinese temple, Magellan's church etc

The big problem is places like Plantation Bay are quite far from the city and I don't know of any hotels in the city that offer Spa treatments or the service you get from places like that.

Any ideas or comments are appreciated.

suggestions on hotels greatly welcome or places to take her to.

Thanks

WHen my fiance proposed to me, he booked a 3 day stay in one of the most renowned nature-like hotels in Mactan, Cebu - Plantation Bay. I like it there because they pretty much have everything you need and want in your stay.... name the things you are looking forward to having in your vacation - they have it. Spa, Game Zones, Kayaks, EVERYTHING... If you want to be super romantic - book the "Lover's Rock" a day ahead and have dinner there.. you will be facing the beach under the stars - one of the reasons that enticed me to saying yes to my fiance hehe. Room rates are ranging from 200 USD to 500 USD depending on the season.

PhilippinesGetting married in Vegas

Well, I think it's a bit odd to eat this at a wedding since it can be messy, but my girls' auntie found this lechon chef in Las Vegas. She wants to have a lechon dinner. I think she just wants to eat lechon and our wedding provides a good excuse.. The chef's contact info is:

Nonoy's Las Vegas Lechon Baboy
708 Scholl Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89107
(702) 985-1316?

OMG SUPERB! Thank you for this information. The original plan should have been going to the Steakhouse after the wedding for dinner but due to the basketball event in vegas this week, reservations are restricted.

PhilippinesGetting married in Vegas

I only had 60 days to prepare our private garden wedding. Since i want my mom to atted my wedding, we processed her paper a month before our wedding. She arrived on time.I had a private wedding. I bought my dress here in the US, hired an italian chef and an assistant cook to prepare our food, got a band for our music, hired a photographer.

Since my hubby and i were not able to invite our other friends in the wedding, we also had a post wedding party.

I had something new, something borrowed and something blue. I had the most wonderful maid of honor who helped me with everything.

Lucky you Rhe! My mom and dad could have made it if the 90 days will be lifted. But my dad being a seaman, sets a barrier for them to arrange a visit, more so he can't leave his job without prior notice for long vacations.

PhilippinesGetting married in Vegas

We arrived into the states on the 26th of March 2009. We had a wedding on the 23 of May 2009. We managed to pull it off and it was fun. I was surprised how many of my friends and family rallied. My friends that have planned weddings say that most of the planning happens in the last few months. I tossed around the idea of doing a civil thing and then an event later but I am glad we went for it and just did the wedding. Have fun in Vegas!! We are heading there on the 30th of March for my Grandmother's 80th B-Day. My Husband is super excited. We are staying at the Bellagio. When is your wedding? Congrats!!

We will have our wedding on March 20 - geeze few more days! Vegas baby!!!! We will be staying in New York New York and we will be leaving this week (Thursday) from WA to Vegas.

Thank you for your replies guys. Even until now I still breakdown in tears knowing that my family won't be able to make it but I reckon no matter how long it will take for us to have the church wedding, the most important thing is it's part of the plan and I'm sure it will come without me knowing it.

PhilippinesGetting married in Vegas
Our wedding is fast approaching.. I am pretty sure most of the girls in VJ are experiencing the same feeling I have this very moment. It's sad that my immediate family couldn't make it to our wedding but with the support of my fiance's family everything is going well so far. Thanks to the technology now a days, my family can watch our wedding LIVE through online streaming. Due to some constraints - Seattle being far from Vegas, lack of time, etc.. - only the 4 of us (Fiance and Me, his mom and dad) will be attending the wedding. I find it weird that only two people are attending considering the kind of wedding traditions we Filipinos have where the least number of guests are usually around 50 -100.. but oh well what more can I expect? We are only given 90 days to prepare... My fiance assured me that we will have another wedding in the Philippines once I get my papers. Guess, I'll have to freeze my wedding fantasies for now.

So guys... care to share how your weddings were like? (to those who arrived in the US through Fiance Visa and were married here) How did it went considering the limited amount of time? How about the guests? What were the traditions you practiced? aside from Something New, SOmething old, Something borrowed and something blue.

Thanks guys.

PhilippinesYou're lucky to have him
I don't think its right to put up a demarcation line between good and bad Filipinos. I have heard lots of comments regarding those BAD people but as long as they are not messing up with my life, then I don't give a damn about them. Yes its part of the Philippine Culture to be very hospitable and friendly, but even in our hometowns, its but normal to have good friends at the start who will eventually become unexpected villains in the end... Although, I feel sad for these BAD people but lets face it.. they exist.

Btw, talking about luck? My fiance and I are in our 20s but I am 4 years older than him - one of the reasons why my friends consider me lucky. Besides, we met in a video game that we both participated in 2 years before he courted me. Back then I never imagined leaving my family and friends, doing all the visa processes and eventually spending the rest of my whole life in the US just to be with him.. It all happened in a heartbeat. My fiance knows in his heart what my intentions are, and by far, he knows how it broke my heart when I left.

Also, being in the US is NEVER A WALK IN THE PARK - finding a new job, meeting new friends, adjusting to the weather conditions, adjusting to the culture - exciting, scary, fun, all part of the experience. . It's like being born again. All of us go through the same thing, most of us left our families behind.. in my case, I sold everything I had - my car, gave up my job just to be with him. He should be the LUCKY one.

PhilippinesName Change after Marriage
Hello VJers.

Long time no see!!!
We just got home from Vegas where we got married. Thanks for your wishes, it was a dream come true and truly a remarkable one.

Now that we have just requested a copy of our marriage certificate from the Clark County office, we would want to gather insights on how you did your name change. I know it varies from one state to the other thats why I called up the Seattle courts and inquired about the said case. The clerk said that IF I will just take my husband's last name, I don't really have to go to the courts and apply for a name change. However, if I will have to take my maiden last name and include it in my name, then I'll have to go through the process of changing name legally.

To make matters clear. Example: Donna Mae Reyes Hunt is married to Jason Ford-ham Estrella. Thus, after marriage, if the bride decides to have - Donna Mae Estrella - then theres no need for a name change. However if she decides to have Donna Mae Reyes Estrella / Donna Reyes Estrella, then she has to go to the courts for name change.

How did you do yours? by US laws and regulations?

Thank you again for your insights.

PhilippinesQuestions about Sputum Exam

Thanks for the quick response.

I don't really see the point why they have to let us do the treatment at St. Luke's considering staying in Manila entails a lot of expense, not to mention our jobs etc.

Thanks anyways. I earnestly pray I won't test positive and so the rest of those who are still waiting for the culture results.

I believe the reason for this is for SLMEC to ensure that the patient will religiously take his/her meds based on the required dosage.

PhilippinesChat log
Depende lang sa consul yan kasi nung interview namin hindi naman hiningi yung chat logs namin. In my opinion, you don't have to translate it.. just have it ready so when the officer will ask for it you can show it to him. If he asks for a translation, then thats the time you translate it to him in your own words.

I was looking at your profile and gladly, we both come from the same state. Things went out smoothly when I arrived in Seattle - Tacoma Airport, I was just asked to hand out some documents like the envelope, visa, and most importantly, the I-94 form that I needed to fill out when the plane was about to land. Surprisingly, apart from what some of the VJ members have been claiming, I wasn't asked for any questions at all, the documents I gave them were verified and the officer immediately stamped my visa together with the etching of I-94 in my passport.

All in all, it took 10 mins to get out from the plane to the lobby where my fiance (now husband) was eagerly waiting for me.

Have a safe trip! :P

PhilippinesHusband teaching Wife to Drive
It's a relief knowing that I'm not the only one experiencing a hard time following the traffic rules here in the US. I guess practicing the speech we will be using as alibi when we get pulled over will be superb at this time.. More driving and speaking practice! :bonk:
GuardianAngelFemalePhilippines2010-05-19 17:50:00
PhilippinesHusband teaching Wife to Drive
Guess what! I'm the winner in this topic.

I used to brag a lot about my driving skills to my husband. Whenever he let me drive and correct my way of driving, I usually answer it with the years of driving that I have had in the Philippines without being issued a ticket whatsoever.. My motto back then was.. If no ticket was issued to me in the Philippines for almost 8 years of driving.. how much more in the US?!

So last month, my husband asked me to buy milk at Fred Meyers, few blocks from the house. I was like "alright, I have the Philippine Driver's License with me anyway, so whatever happens I'll just show it as proof of ID (in WA foreign licences are valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival in the US). Then here comes the TURN LANE -- freakin (excuse the lang) lane thats never included in the PHilippine rules. I didn't notice that when I was already running over the wrong lane... to my surprise when i looked at the rear view mirror.. I saw an ambulance! I just continued and tried signalling to the right to give way --- and guess what that ambulance is?! a COP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I nearly bowed and knelt on my knees just so the officer won't confiscate my license.. good grief.. even if my driving skills sucked that night but at least my speaking and negotiating skills worked perfectly allowing the officer to just say "do better next time and be sure to get a "WA State Driver's License!"

I ended up going home trembling!!! My husband was laughing out loud hearing the kind of reasoning I told the officer in charge.

LESSON: Never brag too much specially if you've been observing the kind of Traffic rules we have in the Philippines!
Know the difference between an ambulance and a police car -- according to my husband  :bonk:

PhilippinesFilipino Job Seekers and Advance Parole Status Inquiries
I just received an update from USCIS today saying....

For the EAD -- Document production or Oath Ceremony
On July 12, 2010, we ordered production of your new card. Please allow 30 days for your card to be mailed to you. If we need something from you we will contact you. If you move before you receive the card, call customer service at 1-800-375-5283.

For the advance parole -- Post-Decision Activity
On July 12, 2010, we mailed you a notice that we have approved this I131 APPLICATION FOR USCIS TRAVEL DOCUMENT. Please follow any instructions on the notice. If you move before you receive the notice, call customer service at 1-800-375-5283.

I am confused about the advance parole status because there's a statement below it saying two possibilities - whether it will be rejected or approved. "For approved applications/petitions, post-decision activity may include USCIS sending notification of the approved application/petition to the National Visa Center or the Department of State. For denied applications/petitions, post-decision activity may include the processing of an appeal and/or motions to reopen or reconsider and revocations."

Here are my questions:

1) I am sure most of you who signed up for online updates were able to receive the same status at one point. Were you able to receive your advance parole card regardless the status update saying it can still be rejected?

2) Not to be ungrateful, believe me I was crying when I received the updates thinking that finally theres a light at the end of this tunnel, however, I am also apprehensive about the months I'd have to spend looking for a job considering the US economy these days. For those Filipinos who were able to land in their respective careers, how long did it take for you to get the job? I am sure you indicated your previous job experiences in the Philippines, so how did it go? Did the interviewing officer gave your previous companies a call for verifications purposes?

3) We're you given equal opportunity same with the other applicants even if you are an immigrant and that your character references and job experiences are limited from the country where you come from?

I will consider all your ideas important.

Thanks again guys.

PhilippinesFiance' Family insists on wedding in Phil after USA Wedding
Hi Brad,

It's all about the culture. Most families in the Philippines love to gather and celebrate memorable occasions most specially family members' wedding. On the good side, its one way for you to meet and greet your "extended" family.

Its not a requirement but I guess its a request, if possible. Just my two cents..

Good luck!

Hello all VJ Philippino memebers,

...Both gave me blessings and approval however the Aunt stated that I MUST also marry my girl in the Philippines as no USA marriage is accepted by family unless in the Phl. I agreed and love the idea but what am I getting into?
Thanks for all advice :)

PhilippinesPolice Clearance

just my two cents..

Perhaps, you can take the risk of just scheduling the interview and explain the situation to the embassy (only if you will be asked -- less talk, less questions, less trouble).

The key is never LIE, you dont want to jeopardize your chances of flying to the US.

This is really tough but if its destiny, you can get by.  Good Luck!

PhilippinesSino dito ang marunong maghilot especially sa mga bata?
Hi. Welive in Seattle, Washington and there are two hilot ladies here. What is funny is that I never believed in the healing power of hilots. I am a doctor here and I have always believed that things have a scientific or medical explanation. But last week something happened to my husband. And I dealt with it as a doctor should. Then my mommy suggested that my husband go to the hilot person. I was totally against it but then I ended up giving into my mommy's request. So we walked up to this beautiful house and this old pretty lady answered the door. She was about 80 years old and she says she's from Mindoro.

So she took my husband with her in the room. My mom and I followed after about 5 minutes. To my surprise, my husband was walking again. OMG! The night before, he sprained his ankle and I heard a pop. So I assumed that he probably broke something cause he was in so much pain. I gave him pain medication throughout the night to stop the pain and was gonna take him to the ER at 5am. The incident happened at 3am. But my mommy wanted to go to the hilot first.

So all I can say is that I am a believer now and there are just some things that you can't explain. God bless you all.

hey girl. how are you? are you trying to use your worldperks miles? try to call northwest if your miles are transferable for your husband. I am not sure if NWA does that anymore. I know that you can claim the miles cause you are the worlperks member.
