for anyone still here in the UK that is interested there is a show on tv tonight about 2 people hiring a cheap car in the US and travlling all round the US with the aim of re-discovering the "real" america underneath all the starbucks, mcdonalds etc. They don't want to spend a penny to any of the big US commerical companies.

United KingdomPound continues to nosedive against the dollar
Lol yeah well I did say the site probably doesn't update, that just proves it. After seeing that I did some reading up

[ClickPress, Wed Oct 22 2008] Following comments yesterday from Bank of England Governor, Mervyn King, condemning the UK economy to recession, investors rushed to the traditional US dollar safe-haven despite concerns about the US economy. Overnight the pound fell in value to just over 1.6260, representing a drop in value of over 7% since the start of the week. In late London trading today (22 October) it traded down to 1.6150. The dollar’s strengthening also saw the euro-US dollar exchange rate drop to 1.2740, its lowest for nearly two years.

With £1 now buying just $1.64 it is possible that consumers will think twice before booking a Christmas shopping spree in New York. Spending $1,000 on gifts will now cost £138 more than it did last November when £1 would get you $2.17.

Doesn't sound like it is going to get any better soon!, I leave on the 9th of November I have my fingers crossed for a miracle haha.

Really ? I did another search on MoneySavingExpert.com and they still rate Tesco at the top, well for 500 pounds anyway. I wouldnt be surprised if the site doesn't update nearly as often as needed so you are probably correct.

I really need to start checking around my area soon and get my money changed over before it falls even more!.

A screenshot for MoneySavingExpert and link, I dont know if it will be helpfull at all though!.

The Post Office are always less than other places, I did some checking online and the best I could find was $1.70, from Tesco! that is quite shocking .

With the Credit Crunch I dont expect to see it go up anytime soon, I usually go to Thomas Cook.

Yes I did, Steven already had his tax returns etc and just had to Notarise his I-134, I also had the police certificate etc; so to save time I sent it all back before I actually had everything (in my own two hands) that they needed.

Sounds like you both have a competant Lawyer also!, usually competant Lawyers are a pain the ####### to find.

Awesome news Stuart!, London are quite quick with dates they certainly didn't give me time to plan how I was getting there !.

Congratulations!, it all flies in now!

I can imagine an Immigration officer would be in BIG trouble if they let anyone in on VWP with a one way ticket, if I was in there place I certainly wouldn't risk my job etc; on someone I dont even know because they didn't read the rules .

Like what was said all you can do is tell the truth and make sure you are well informed with the Evidence of ties to the UK you will need to provide.

Remember all Immigration officers will see you as a terrorist until proven otherwise!

Very detailed.

Seems like most people get the young American girl, was she blonde? I remember I broke the fingerprint machine (or someone before me did it!) and she had me shake various wires to see if it would come back online haha.

I was totally thrown off. I changed my clock just before I went to sleep on everything, MP3 player, Phone clocks and thought "way hey, I am doing great here" , got on the net to talk to my man (situated in Baltimore MD) at the usual 6pm (here ) and wondered why he wasnt online, of course I realised a couple days later, the USA havent gone back an hour yet biggrin.gif .

We also have a 5 hour time difference so I am enjoying talking to my Honey at an earlier time !

Really Graham? the CO I had was fine with all my forms, she was very upbeat to, mine said 'room & board for the rest of her life' but Steven didn't mention anything about giving me money so I guess that was why I was fine.

Those forms certainly have to be updated.

I am completely relieved and bursting with excitement... yeah, over the moon is a better way to put it! Thanks for everyone's support and advice here... it made the process so much easier and sensible.

Keith said it seems like the interview isn't really a problem - but that he definitely got the feeling that the more organized you are before you get there, the better, since it puts the consular officials more at ease. he was seeing exasperated faces at other windows, and that was only a few minutes after he got there in the morning.

As long as you're prepared and careful about having all the documents, you'll be fine. Good luck next week!! good.gif

Also the only Jazz I paid for with the postage was before 12 delivery nothing else.

I reckon you will be fine, we are using everything you mentioned for ours to and you have more than enough.

I have a possibly silly question, they accept GBP at the Embassy right? for the Visa?, I have had trouble spending notes that say Bank of Scotland on them in England and Vice Versa, am I better off going to the travel agent and getting dollars? if so how much do I need?

My Folder of 'stuff' has grown and grown, I have tonnes of evidence and required forms like police certificate etc;. I think it may be overkill so I put in tabs so if they asked for anything I would have it!. I would rather over prepare than get there and be missing something silly.

They aren't looking at how long you've been in the US for a calendar year. They look at how long you've been in the US in the 12 months preceding your current entry. If you plan to go in January 2009, look at how many days you've been in the US since January 2008.

I visited for 174 days in total since January 2008. My last visit ended 31st of August and I won't be going back to the USA until mid Jan/Feb. If they are going to calculate it like that - I won't be able to visit because the bulk of my visiting was done in the first six months of 2008 ... crying.gif

Hi All

My last visit to the USA ended 31st of August 2008. I was told when going through POE in Chicago at the end of July at the start of my visit, that I was a few days short of the 180 day limit for visits and that I would be denied entry to the USA if I visited again anytime soon!

OK, it will soon be the start of a new year, and I'm planning on going over for 10 days either Jan/Feb - keeping my fingers crossed that I've had enough of a break between visits.

My passport is full of stamps as my fiance and I have been together for two and a half years and I always get questioned pretty thoroughly when going through. They say to me ... "you have a lot of stamps in your passport" and I just reply "yeah - but that's two and a half years worth". I took a letter from work last time, bank statements showing direct debits, but all the officer was interested in was my return ticket.

We should be filing the I-129F in the next couple of weeks. A few more months of waiting and then I can start living my life!!

Have a good week everyone ...

Hi, i was just wondering if someone who has done the medical could help me out, i was just wanting to know exactly at the london doctors, what is everything that you get tested for? when you get the medical done, what all do they actually test? someone said eye test, is that just the read the letters on the wall thing or do they test for color issues, and just everything else, if anyone could tell me what all actually happens i`d be really appreciative.
thanks very much

Anyone know anywhere to go get pancakes in central London?

Would they have them in pubs that day? I bet they would. Or a chip shop?

The canteen at my husband's work used to have them. Maybe somebody at the consulate will let you into their canteen.......... ohmy.gif

Wouldn't that be a stitch? You'd get to hear everybody grumbling over lunch about the crazy visa applicants in the office that day... laughing.gif

would be interesting to be a fly on the wall in the embassy back office I think. See what non VJ unprepared people send, they different kind of folk applying for different types of visas.

Anyways...yes everyone have a pancake for me! I demand you ALL eat pancakes! (with lemon and sugar!!) mmmmmm Might just wait and have my UK style pancakes for a US breakfast style when I get home wednesday morning!!!!
