I unplugged the DVR last night because it sounded like it was making the jump to light speed. I forgot to plug it back in this morning. . . . . and now we missed the taping of Top Gear. Chris is going to realize this in 2 minutes when he starts to chow on dinner. . . . . . :innocent:

Oh no! Not top gear!! :hehe: It was a good episode last night too! My hubby & I love the show too! He got me into watching it now too! My job while he is gone for 3 mos is to make sure the new episodes get recorded AND saved on the DVR for when he gets back from overseas.

CanadaBook medical before interview or vice versa?

After reading Inky's post, I wanted to clarify mine. I booked my appointment for my medical for the same day as my interview. I got my interview date from Vancouver, then I set up my medical appointment. The appointments are set for January 13, 2010.

S.

This is what I am hoping to do as well. I sent my checklist off to Vancouver today with my preferred dates, hopefully one of them works out and the medical can be done then, too! smile.gif

Definitely do not want to book the medical until you know your interview date if you have to travel to BC and do everything in one shot.

They really need more than 1 panel physician in western Canada! The consulate and medical office are somewhat understanding of that fact!

I called DOS two days after sending back my packet 3 & they had scheduled my date already! Had the airline tickets booked after that...(seat sale!!) I prob shoulda waited for pk 4 but oh well it took 1.5 weeks to arrive!!

CanadaVisa pickup from Vancouver consulate
I had my K 1 interview in Vancouver in May of this year. I was able to pickup my visa on a Thursday after my interview that same week done on a Tuesday. My medical was Wednesday and after submission of the results same day Wednesday they told me to come back after 2pm on Thursday.

I was back at my cousins workplace downtown Vancouver with my bags and a cab arranged by 3:30 for my 6 pm flight back to Regina!

I am the service member in this thread. First I would like to thank everyone for your advice. It has really helped. Now I have a question. The 129F asks for our "address where you intend to live". I recently found out that I may be moving from Maryland to Virgina. Would it be best if I use my Home of Record address (which is my parents address)? Will using my HoR cause heart ache because it's not my home address??

I guess it depends when you have to PCS to Virginia. If you are going to be living in Maryland for the next few months you file the I 129f then just use that address. Your application would go to VT service center no matter if you file in either state.

My husband and I filed the I 129f in ND about 1.5 mos before he PCS'd to a diff state. It definitley is a risk doing that because it took over a month for our NOA's to come. ( cutting it close) Not everyone waited as long as us for NOA's though. We did a petitioner change of address soon after and everything worked out fine for us.

Good luck!

CanadaA question
SCP since you say you live in Swift Current, you could drive to Calgary and take a flight to Vancouver from there. I know you said you are thinking of driving, but like others have said once you factor in time, driving through the mountains, gas, hotel rooms its alot cheaper to fly to Vancouver. You could probably get a better deal flying out of Calgary than Regina. I flew out of YQR and had to stop in Calgary & Edmonton.(The more expensive flight was non-stop & only 1x a day). When I was in Vancouver the Skytrain did not connect with the Airport, apparently now it does. The medical is within walking distance of the consulate so no worries there. I have a cousin who lives in Burnaby who thankfully let me stay with them, the Skytrain was a great help! Anyways just a suggestion as I know the travelling to Vancouver is a headache for the Visa and expensive.Good luck!

Ew, so I have to fly from SK to BC for the K-1 interview. Will I need to do my medical while there or will they be able to find an appointed physician in my town?

QUOTE (SCP2009 @ Dec 11 2009, 09:44 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hmm, well, definitely something for discussion. I should map out the drive to see how long it'd take.

Edit: 15hr drive to Van from here, as opposed to 8hr drive to Mtl. However, the extra wait time does outweigh the drive length immensely.

Welcome to VJ!! There is a panel physician in Vancouver, unfortunately he is the ONLY PANEL PHYSICIAN in western canada....it really sucks!! They also only do immigration medicals on Wednesdays. I spent 3 days in Vancouver because of that, interview & medical all combined into one! It's doable though! Many other VJ'ers have done it! The medical was $350 but the results are available SAME day unlike the eastern canada physicians.

I too had to make travel arrangements from SK to BC. Trust me its NOT worth moving back to ON, I got my interview date so quickly and scheduling my medical around that date was a breeze. Also because you probably will have some notice (about a month or more) for the interview its a great time to catch a great seat sale from WestJet or AirCanada. I think my round trip ticket was around $250. Vancouver is also alot more flexible in their scheduling, their packet 3 includes a line that you can request what interview date would work for you. Not always guaranteed or granted, but if a certain day of the week works better for you its that much better.

Anyways, good luck to you and your fiance and I hope the K-1 visa route is speedy for you!

CanadaLast minute panics in POE prep.
I know this is a bit different, but when I was a college student in the U.S. I borrowed my parents car. I never had registration or insurance that was in my own name. (although I was still covered as a driver). My parents never gave me a permission letter to drive it and I was only asked once about who's car it was during the multiple border crossings over the span of 5 years, and they never questioned me when I said it was not my car. I have a feeling they will ask you if you are importing the car, but what others have suggested should be ok, a letter from the owner of the car.

QUOTE (darkchilde794 @ Dec 30 2009, 08:28 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
The secondary would be a breeze! Seriously. Remember to bring your paperwork and dont bring food. You might get a really new officer and he/she might not be familiar with the K1 process, but for most of the time, they know what they are doing, especially if you POE at an airport. Danu did have an a$$ of a POE officer, but that was a rare event. In the case that you get the same douchebag, be firm and ask for a supervisor because they have no right to be purposely mean to you. And unless you have some really big legal problems, you wont be denied.

I would say that you need to be there early... maybe give at least 1.5 to 2 hours at secondary alone. You never know what the secondary looks like.

Goodluck!!! Let us know when you made it smile.gif

Minnew: That super sucks! Especially since some US flights charge you to check in your bags :/

My thoughts exactly.... I understand the need to have no carry on luggage, but yeah it's gonna cost more to check.... & what if the airline loses your luggage? When I flew I would at least pack 1 change of clothes in my carry on!

CanadaHoliday Recipe Thread
Christmas Morning Wifesaver

My mom makes this every Christmas! Sooo good!! My hubby loves it! For the two of us I 1/2 the recipe.

Superb! Make the day before and pop in the oven in the morning. Serves 8.

Ingredients:
16 slices white bread, crusts
removed
16 slices Canadian back bacon or
ham
16 slices sharp cheddar cheese
6 eggs
1/2 tsp. pepper 2 mL
1/2-1 tsp. dry mustard 2-5 mL
1/4 cup minced onion 60 mL
1/4 cup finely chopped green pepper 60mL
1-2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce 5-10 mL
3 cups milk 750 mL
dash Tabasco
1/2 cup butter 125 mL
Special K or crushed Corn Flakes

Instructions:
Set 8 pieces of bread into a 9" x 13" (23 x 33 cm) buttered, glass baking dish. Cover bread with slices of back bacon. Lay slices of cheddar cheese on top of bacon and then cover with remaining slices of bread to make it like a sandwich. In a bowl, beat eggs and pepper. To the egg mixture add dry mustard, onion, green pepper, Worcestershire sauce, milk and Tabasco. Pour over the sandwiches, cover and let stand in fridge overnight. In morning, melt butter, pour over top. Cover with Special K or crushed Corn Flakes. Bake, uncovered, 1 hour at 350 deg.F (180 deg.C). Let sit 10 minutes before serving. Serve this with fresh fruit and hot cinnamon rolls.

CanadaHoliday Hoopla...the good, the bad and the ugly...share stories, ideas, recipes etc
This Christmas will be different for me and my husband. With me not working (aka no EAD yet) things will be alot tighter this year and have already told family no gifts. They told me well I'm still going to get you something, list or not! I feel guilty for getting stuff from them and I'm not able to reciprocate. I mean at the very least a x mas card or something. I feel ESP guilty after all our parents did for the wedding, the time, $$ and travel it took.

I guess I'm just rambling and venting. Next Christmas my husband plans to spend with his family in GA. I haven't a problem with it, it's been 5 years since he was hone for Xmas cuz of the military. I just don't know how I am going to get time off @ christmas when I start working to be able to go with him.

Anyways, we put up the tree we had from 2 years ago, slowly adding a " special" ornament every year. We couldn't find the tree stand that came with the tree! Went to get another plastic one........ well our tree looks like our wedding cake......the leaning tower of Pisa......LOL

We will get a bigger/new tree next year... LOL

I always type a letter up a few days before 'from Santa' and leave it under the tree for him. Usually it's the first thing he opens.

He loves it.

I am going to miss it when he no longer believes because there's so much magic there.

I was also a late bloomer when it came to santa claus, I think I was 11 or 12, I remember being so upset that my parents for not telling me sooner! LOL!

Well this is our first Christmas together as a married couple and we plan to do our decorating this thanksgiving weekend. It's only to two of us this Christmas ( and the dog). His family lives in GA and he plans to get leave next year from the military for x mas, it's been like 5 years since he's been with his family for x mas, my parents will prob complain that it's two x mas in a row without seeing them, but that's what happens when your children get married!

Thanksgiving in canada was never a huge occasion for our family, very rarely the whole gang would get together. Thanksgiving in the US with my bf, fiancé and now husband will be filled with co worker get togethers, because like us we don't have family around. They have always been filled with fun, beverages, and of course the best turkey I have ever had in my life!! Deep fried turkey!! 3 different types of seasoning to choose from and so juicy!! I hope the get togethers here are as good as where he used to work:(

Anyways, I have a recipe that my fiancé absolutely loves! It's called the x mas morning wife saver. My mom has made it for as long as I can remember. Sooooo good!! Make it the night before so your not spending x mas morning in the kitchen!!

I have never made shortbread cookies in my life but I am going to give it a try!
Anybody have a good recipe??

The tradition that we cannot agree on is presents, there won't be much this year, but still. Our family we were allowed to open 1 gift x mas eve after church, then the rest plus stocking x mas morning.
His family opens all presents x mas eve, then stockings in the morning and of course "Santa" presents.

Welcome to VJ Doug and Donna!

Because Donna lives in BC she will interview for the K-1 visa in Vancouver which will speed up your process by a few months! The only other consulate in Canada that does K-1 interviews is Montreal and they are backlogged with a wait time for interviews around 4 months after completing the Packet 3 stage of the process. You will most likely be able to get an interview date within 2 months or less of sending back Packet 3 in Vancouver at the current wait times.

All the best on your Visa Journey!

just remember, the next time someone talks about lighting one up, it's not a cigarette they are talking about. :P

Yuck!!! That makes me so glad to be quit smoking and wish I had never started! I have been smoke free for just over 2 months now! I feel so much better! I am only 25 but smoked for almost 10 years... Ugh just thinkig about that makes me sick..... All the $$ I spent!! I was never a pack a day smoker thank goodness!

The cravings never go away, every time I smell coffee it makes me want a cigarette or even have a few alcoholic beverages. I have been able to drink and deal with the cravings but coffee is too much. I'm sure it will get better with time but no coffee for now!

My husband bought me electronic cigarettes (www.smoketip.com) based on advice from his dad who smoked for 40+ years and he quit. I used it alot during the first few weeks, but now use it very rarely maybe 1x a week when I can't deal with the cravings. A day at a time...

Phil has stumbled across and interesting job lead in Houston. We'll be moving if he gets a good offer. Frankly, I'm a little intimidated. From what I've read, Texas is pretty anti-immigrant. I'm not pleased about the idea of having a driver's license with "temporary visitor" written across it and I'm wondering what other obstacles being an immigrant in Houston might cause.

~ Catherine

Wow, I'm kind of scared of moving to Texas too. But on the bright side, at least you're there legally right sad.gif?
And why on earth do license's say "temp visitor'' anyway? Those aren't on the CDN ones. blink.gif

From the Texas Driver License Division website, it looks like driver's licenses for all permanent residents have the "Temporary Visitor" notation unfortunately. I wish Canadian's were expempt, I'd just show them my Canadian passport.

On the bright side, I've looked up the cost of living in Houston and it's 14% lower than Atlanta. Companies pay a little more on average too.

So I ranted in the Vent thread a week ago that I was having back pain problems, have been to the chiropractor alot in the past week and half, it is slowly getting better! I have never taken a muscle relaxant until today....wow thank goodness for Robaxacet!! I am planning to get a massage in the next week or so and hoping that the Robaxcet works over the next few days....Now if only I could take it on the night shift.... I'd probably end up with my head on the table at work! LOL.

I never had any back problems until I was about 40 and I had some severe bacterial infection which made me cough. I coughed my back into spasms and I couldn't believe how much pain I was in...for weeks! I could truly empathize then with anyone that had any back problems. I couldn't have lived without Robaxacet. It was a lifesaver! I hope you're getting some relief now, and soon mending.

Oh ouch that sounds painful as well. Unfortunately I was blessed to be born into a family with back problems, mostly my dad's side, my dad's oldest brother has had many backk surgeries and I think has sciolosis. I was also blessed with a shorter right leg, so yeah custom foot orthotics.....*sigh* gotta love family inheritance...LOL... I think alot of it has to do with my work, and the stress of moving/wedding, alot of sitting at work and I haven't been as active as I once was....its these nights that give me no energy to get up and get moving. 2 more days of work then I am DONE like dinner!! Packing and moving is going to be slower because of my back but I have a few weeks hopefully to get it all accomplished, with the help of my family.

My Niece and her boyfriend went to a wedding on Saturday. The groom works in the same department as my Niece's boyfriend.

So they get there and find out that the guests are expected to take turns bartending. To top that off, there is a tip jar on the bar and the money is to go to the bride and groom.

So tacky laughing.gif

They ended up working for about two hours. She would just like to go to a 'normal' wedding. Oh and btw, 'family' was excluded from bartending duty.

So, I went to my going away party that I didn't want to go to last. Needless to say, I called Jeremy (SO) when I got home and drunkenly sang Journey and dropped my Big Mac on the floor sad.gif

Hope you enjoyed your party!!

I am sad.gif but also biggrin.gif today, just gave my resignation notice at work. I am going to miss it, but also look forward to the 2 weeks before I move to get my life together and start packing! I just hope EI doesn't say I quit too early, not like I am going to be approved for it without the EAD, and who knows at the rate they are spilling out EAD's may not even need EI with my pension! The director is such a great guy, he is so laid back and was absolutely wonderful about it, he knew that it was coming, just did not know when I planned on resigning. Wished me all the best and said for sure you can use me or any of the supervisors as a reference. We had a fun talk about weddings and long distance and all of that, oh god I am think I am going to tear up a lil, I met so many wonderful co workers and clients, it has been an amazing year with them! crying.gif I hope I am that lucky when I venture into the Omaha job market!

I have to say, I don't miss the humidity one bit. Now when winter gets here and I am getting static shocks all over the place - well I may change my mind on that.

We went to Florida in search of better weather, but honestly - I can't say that it is 'better' - different yes, better, no. We traded snow for incredible heat and humidity.

Oh there was just a thing on the news where Swift Current is being over run by rats!!

Swift Current seeing upsurge of rats

THE CANADIAN PRESS

SWIFT CURRENT, Sask. - There's nothing like a common enemy to bind a people together, and in the Saskatchewan community of Swift Current, that enemy is the rat.

The city's been seeing an upsurge of the rodents, with reports of phone cords being chewed, walls being scratched and sinks being damaged.

Stewart Biech, a provincial pest control officer, has been busy fielding reports coming in from throughout Swift Current.

“About a couple months ago, this thing kind of ballooned a little bit,” he said.

“People are very concerned. Most people are absolutely terrified of rats and the thought of rats and what they can do.”

And with good reason. If there is a way into a building, the rats will find it. And then? Well, according to Biech, the horror movies aren't far wrong.

“If they're in your house you should be afraid of that,” he warned. “They will do things while you're sleeping. There's been recorded cases of where they gnaw on people's arms or whatever.”

ohmy.gif *Shudders* They better not migrate east to regina! I've never even seen a rat here!

No kidding flames! I wouldn't mind the cooler weather so much if here in Canada we actually got a summer with some decently warm days! It hasn't been so! crying.gif It's been sort of muggy the past few days with the rain but I am so sick of this rain and the temperature barely breaking 20C!!!
