CanadaAre weiners and lunchmeat ok to bring back to the US now?
Driving to and from SK when I went to school in ND, my friend had to throw out her brand new bag of dog food she had bought while in canada on way back to college because it had meat in it. I had heard to truckers who had packed sandwiches with meat and had to throw out.... Ridiculousness...

When my parents came to visit me mom would make a batch of meatless cabbage rolls and put them in cooler along with perogies....mmmm

Sorry I know this is not helpful to current question, just saying.

We ended up having that Asian chicken salad last night. I had just had some toast up until supper, so was a little hungry by suppertime. My tummy seemed to handle the salad fairly well, then I had some popcorn during the evening, and it didn't feel so well. Took some Tums and slept fine though. Think we'll finish up the salad for tonight with some rustic olive bread I bought on the weekend.

I did buy some Yoplait Whips! the other day. My...my...MY they're good! I put one in the freezer as a cool treat some evening. I had the raspberry mouse and put the orange cream in the freezer.

Guess we are the only ones having dinner tonight Carla!

We are in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. Can't say i'm crazy about Swift Current, but - then again I am really tired. This little town is so over priced, I guess they are ripping people off because it is a town a lot of people probably stop at. For instance, we just went to A&W and a chubby chicken combo was over $10!

Anyway, I just had a burger and a drink (the person didn't put the lid on my drink correctly and I got it on my clothes) - but anyway, we had Humptys earlier - it was so-so.

*Waves* You must have passed through Regina earlier in the day tmix! Speedy Creek as my family calls it, yeah there is nothing there, overpriced for sure! Safe travels to Calgary!

Greetings from Macon Georgia!

So I was starving when we arrived here around 1:30 today, so we went over to Waffle House, which is just across the road, I felt like having breakfast (we got take out as we don't like leaving the cat alone long).

Anyway, I had their breakfast plate, a waffle, sausage, eggs, toast and hash browns - the scrambled eggs were some of the best I have ever had! The Waffle House staff are interesting, they all look like they have been there a while and Michele, who took our order, didn't really look too happy to be there. I forgot to order drinks and when she gave me the bill I said can we order drinks, then I apologized for not ordering them initially - she said that's ok and gave us our drinks no charge.

Hi Trailmix! Hope your journey back to Canada is going well!!

MMMMmmmm Waffle House! Sooo good!! If thats one thing that my fiance misses about living in GA is the Waffle House's. He was ecstatic that one was opening up soon in Kansas City, MO, about as far north as they go...lol..I guess we will be making a few weekend trips to MO. He just started writing them to convince them to get one in Omaha, NE. I think it would go over well, especially with the military in the metro area who are from all over the country.

CanadaThe Way We Were
There used to be a big group of people going through k1 and aos pretty much at the same time.(mostly east coasters)I spent a long time on here while waiting for k1 and aos as well. As soon as I was able to work in the US spent less time due to other responsibilities... And like someone else said it was whiny no one searching asking same questions, kinda got burned out. The only real reason I'm back is because I do ROC next month and will be lingering. Funny how time flies...

CanadaVolunteer work while waiting for EAD?
QUOTE (g&a246 @ Jul 8 2009, 04:20 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hopefully those of you who are about to file/have recently filed for AOS won't have to wait the whole three months for EAD/AP. The process seems to be pretty speedy at the moment, fyi. I was stunned on Monday when I got a USCIS email notice saying my EAD application had been approved. And I was just shocked this morning when the approved Advance Parole notice was waiting in my inbox. The NOA date for my AOS application was June 2. So, it took only about a month for both. Crazy!

Woot! Thats great news! I have seen the timelines range anywhere from 60-80 days...maybe a few with the whole 90 days! I hope they pick up speed! Especially with the economy the way it is! I feel awful for those USC SO's who have lost their jobs in the middle of this whole process and then their spouse cannot work until given the authorization. My SO is enlisted with Uncle Sam...unless he goes AWOL... laughing.gif

QUOTE (kuro @ Jul 7 2009, 07:18 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Do they still have temporary work permits while you are waiting for your EAD? I thought I read that somewhere.

Also its pointless to pay the $300 and some dollars for an EAD as soon as you enter the country, before you apply for AOS, that will expire when your K-1 I-94 expires...it would take 3 months just to get the card. When you apply for AOS, the EAD and AP are "free", they are included in the $1010 fee.

Hi all,

I've been a troll on this forum for a while now (meaning that I lurk, but never post.. hehe), and I decided to come out of hiding today to ask a few questions smile.gif

I have been approved for my K1 visa and will be entering the US next week. As far as getting married is concerned, we will be doing the whole civil/legal marriage paperwork stuff as soon as possible and having the whole big wedding ceremony for friends and family sometime next year.

My questions are:

1) Are you able to do any volunteer work (say, at the hospital or what not) while you wait for your EAD?
2) For those who apply for advance parole to leave the country prior to getting your status changed (lets say I want to go back to visit home), how long does that take to approve and is it only valid once or can I go back home several times? On a side note, I hate that they call it "advance parole"... it makes me feel like a criminal sorta. Yeesh!

Thanks for all the help!

Welcome to VJ! Congratulations on the approval and upcoming marriage!!

Absolutely you can do volunteer work while you are waiting for your EAD. As long as you aren't getting any $$. I would love to be able to once I get settled in.

I hate it that they call it Advanced Parole too! I am not a criminal! Anyways, from what I understand yes you can use the AP document more than once to travel back to Canada. The EAD and AP documents usually take anywhere from 70-90 days to be approved after you send in your AOS package (I-485/I765/I 131) with the EAD and AP applications.

CanadaFellow Canadian VJers removing Conditions..

My husband works in HR and he said that companies don't have to re verify a green card, only work permits. So they shouldn't require anything from you. If it's a new job, the expired greencard and letter should work. If you're worried, make an Infopass and get a stamp. I did because I was worried about the cruise I went on and documentation. My employer hasn't asked me for a new greencard and mine expired Nov. 9.

Thank you Sapphire for your response! Calmed my nerves a little! I've worked for this employer for a year and a half. Long story short they have high expectations above the standard for the field and my impression it's in every department, it was explained in orientation. So I guess we will see, I dont have time for an Infopass appointment honestly but if that what it comes to...

What can they do? E verify me? What if the system shows something different? All I can do is make infopass appointment for I 551 stamp? Really cannot afford a lapse in my job.

CanadaThe IRS/CRA Income Tax Thread
I hope Zyggy is still answering these questions!

I have a question that I have been trying to figure out all evening! H&R Block "free"version paid for by Military One Source is definitely not as good as TurboTax. I think I will stick with TurboTax! I am a stumped on where to report my Canadian Pension on the software. It was a lump-sum distribution and not from an RRSP or RRIF, from an employer matching plan.( or is an RRIF an employer plan?) I was taxed at 20% before receiving the distribution and was still a canadian resident at the time, its under 6K before taxes. Can I take the 20% paid as a credit?

Moved BACK to Canada in May 2008 from living in the USA on F-1 OPT status and resided in Canada until September 2009. Moved to the USA on K-1 visa and became a GC holder as of 12/14/2009. So I qualify as a resident alien and am filing MFJ. From fiddling around with TurboTax it seems I qualify for the foreign earned income exclusion (my wages). If I didn't qualify for the exclusion we would have owed! But I am very unsure about the pension. I received my T-4 already for the distribution.

Anyone have any advice?

CanadaCanada/US Crossing with Vehicle Letter
QUOTE (Wis-Can @ Mar 16 2009, 11:51 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hey guys, This is for any of you that have brought your vehicle from Canada to the US. I went down to the GM dealer and ask them for a letter that states the car meets emission control standards for the year it was built. He said well that's just a Vehicle Inquiry Check so he printed me off this piece of paper that has GM Vehicle Inquiry System Summary written across the top. Then it has my vin #, the car description, the original dealer, the warranty info and he pointed to the section that says Service Informational Items and under this section it states Vehicle Has No Current Record of Outstanding Service Information. He said this is what they would want at the border crossing. This doesn't seem right. So I am wondering if I am going to be able to us this...seems to me as it would have to state that it meets emission control standards, he said this is essentially what this says. HELP...what are your thoughts or experiences? Thanks.

Oh and I don't know if I posted in the right section....someone can move it if they need to. Thanks again!

I don't think they gave you the correct information. I had to temporary import my car to the U.S last year. I have a GM vehicle as well. It has to be a letter directly from GM of Canada and Vintage Vehicle Services out of Oshawa, Ontario is who I contacted. It cost me $80 and they can fax a copy of the letter to you and you will also receive a hard copy in the mail that comes with GM of Canada letterhead. It will have bullets on the letter, one that it meets EPA and the other the Safety Standards(DOT). The number that I used to contact was 1 888 467 6853, or 905 440 7689, 8-5, M-F. Hope this helps!

Edit: I just looked at JulyBrides link in her post and they have listed: I think GM must contract out the compliance letters to Vintage Vehicle Services because that is the same address and telephone numbers that I used when I had to import.
