Awwww hugs.... hang in there.... long distance relationships are soooo hard and I feel as if only those that have gone thru it understand.... I could never talk to my friends about how much I missed my sweetie because they would just be like "why don't you find someone local?" It really hurt me so I just talked to my family, they understood. You don't choose who to fall in love with, and it just happens... But your heart physically aches when you're apart, it's sooo hard!! Just keep thinking about the time you'll finally be together, that's what got me thru the hard times luv.gif

I definately relate as well. My sweety and I met on World of Warcraft. We play every day and talk on webcam but I still miss him like crazy. I have the reverse of you though Jill. My friends are happy and excited for me, as is my sister but my parents arent really super happy with the idea of me being so far away and going to live with someone they say I dont really know because we haven't lived together. The irony? My mom and dad got engaged after 6 months of dating because my dad was being posted back to canada (mom is german) so I think its fairly hypocritical of them to be acting they way they are about the situation. Ah well. Not much they can do about it, I'm going to do this thing with or without them being completely happy (though my dad is starting to come around...says hes just concerned). Its so hard to be this far away from Wes though. We only get to see each other once every 4 months or so because the flights are expensive (though we got his tickets for the upcoming visit for only $413 roundtrip!!) The physical ache from being apart isn't something you can just make up...crying in the middle of the night because you wake up out of a beautiful dream only to realize he's not really there to hold... ugh... im starting to make myself cry again.

Thats why I love these forums though. Every time I see one of you guys get your acceptance it makes me happy because one day that will be me, and my prince and I will be together forever. I wish you all the best as well with your happily ever afters biggrin.gif

These forums really help the time go by faster and I really appreciate being able to relate and share stories with each other. I keep thinking too one day it will be me jumping for joy that we got approved! I understand the physical ache..its hard to describe, and I know its only going to get worse before it gets better, but I know we will make it through!!

Wait minnew, your fiance said that they don't deploy people within the first year? Did he join the US Army recently? And if I am understanding this right then they are lying to him. mad.gif My fiance hasn't been in the army for a year yet, like 8 months? But he's already been scheduled to deployed. It's fun stuff. tongue.gif ...Not really.

No he's been in the Air Force for 6 years, from what he was told they don't deploy you right away...need some time for training and all that fun stuff and getting accustomed to the base. The first and only time he deployed was about 2 years after he enlisted and went through tech school, he could have deployed again about a year later but wasn't on the list that time around. Mind you the Air Force, (or at least what he does in the AF) doesn't go into combat areas so he has had shorter deployments and not as frequent, but you never know that could change!!

Ah, I can so relate but you and minnew have it lucky (in the sense that they won't be gone for long). My fiance is getting deployed next month for an entire year, hopefully shorter but they're saying he'll be away for a year. And since he was lame and didn't buy a laptop, it's snail mail for an entire year. ):

He's going to Kuwait, and his MOS is 14T. I don't have to worry too badly at least though, because he's not in the front lines. Thank you Air Defense Artillery. Where are your guys stationed? In the US and overseas? smile.gif

We met while I was going to school in the US, been with him for 4 years, lived with him for 1 year, so this separation has been very difficult after spending every day with him. It would have been so much easier to just adjust status from F-1, but we were not ready for it at the time, our parents did not want us to have a civil ceremony and weren't in the right frame of mind to get married, but you know what they say absence makes the heart grow fonder!! He is stationed in the US but will be PCS'ing to a new base in the US soon. I hope they don't plan on deploying him within the first year, and he told me they don't do that, but maybe within the first 2 years, not looking forward to that especially if the visa process might take up to 1 year!!

I miss him! He away with the military right now, so seeing him right now isnt even an option - so just the way it is right now. We talk everyday, for about 4 hours (can you say puppies?) But later in the spring Ill be able to visit him for his home-coming for 2 weeks! I so cant wait! We decided to go on a cruise while he has his r&r, but then it struck him - I may have problems coming back in at port maybe? So decided against it. Regardless, I miss the ####### out of him. I just can't wait till he's home! And our nice two week visit together since we last saw eachother in the fall smile.gif He hasnt officially proposed yet, he cant... hes away. And I told him if he were to ask me over the phone - Id say no. lol. I want it done the old fashion way innocent.gif But he told me it is coming... and Im anticipating when I go down for the week of Canada Day over the 4th of July due to some hints he let out by accident (men arent very good at that, are they..) Did I mention I miss him? I just cant wait to get this process started once we get married in the fall. I dont want to do it earlier, just because of my kids. I want my kids to be there. And my exhusband will allow for them to move with me, but not until I have a job down there myself. So right now, I just want to spend as much time as I can before I get my visa in hand... really because my son has a ton of medical hospital appointments at Sick Kids and it requires a lot of travelling from Halifax to Toronto. I'd be afraid to see these medical bills in the states (since its a condition that hes had for a while, doubt any PI's would pay the bill. This has been going on for 2 years now, all the hospital visits so they can find out what the heck is wrong with him (hes 5), and its probably going to take another year or so with a couple more appointments we have to go to. So hence the wait to start the petition. Its hard knowing its going to be a while longer before we are going to petition, then the wait after that. It is worth it though! smile.gif I just hope he doesnt deploy around the time my visa is supposed to be approved and halt it even more after lol.
Did I mention I miss him?

rose.gif I am in the same boat...I am going to visit my fiance on Thursday but after this visit....it will be 4 months or more before I see him again,(depending if POE lets me in, or I have enough holiday time) hopefully he can get some leave time and come up to see me!! He is also in the military, deployments suck and I am hoping too that he won't get deployed soon after we get married! We have made it through one deployment together...I just keep thinking like it is one to keep myself sane! Hang in there!

the funny thing about the washroom - I ran into that here in the South and so now say restroom - BUT I was watching an old Andy Griffiths show and what do you think they said? They used the word washroom! Aunt Bea was telling Opie to go to the washroom and brush his teeth before bed or something like that - so they did use to use that word here!

I wonder if that's a regional thing? My husband and his family all refer to the washroom as the laundry room. They're from NC. I guess that's the same here in Florida, too, because people look at me like this huh.gif when I ask for it.

The word that surprised me here was calling license plates 'tags'. We need to get new stickers for our tags at the tag office! It sure was confusing untiil I figured out what tags were.

And there's not even a tag office here! It's in a place called the Tax Collector, which was somewhere else entirely. blink.gif I remember going to the DMV to change over my car registration from Ontario to Florida. They said "You have to get that at the Tag Office."
"Uhhh..... okay. What's a Tag Office?"
"It's where you get the tags."

around here they are called license plates but the stickers you put on them ever year are called tags... and we get them from the DMV....

a little aside .. what was strange for me here is that you can't just go to one places and get your car insurance and register your car at the same place....

$350? Sheesh and I thought $275 was too much. The staff that works there are nice people. But I absolutely loathe the gotta be there at 6:30AM and be there until 2PM approach to doing things. I could never get there in time from Van. Island. So I had to stay the night in Vancouver. Seems like every other office in Canada has you go in and you're done within an hour. None of this hang around for 8 hours bored out of your tree routine like in BC.

NOOOOOOOOO Say it isn't so!!!!! You have to be there for 6:30 am???? Is that usual for there??? I'm from the Island too!! Ouch!! I was hoping to take the first ferry from Nanaimo and come back on the same day!! Thought maybe I could have a 10:00 or 11:00 am appointment. I hope it's not for 6:30......Bad enough I'll have to stay in Vancouver to get the visa, cause I know it's not issued the same day...

All that being said...nice to know it's a good office...and hey...maybe he'll run specials later this spring!!! laughing.gif

Hehehe me too!! I am not looking forward to the expense of the flight to Vancouver, plus 3 nights hotel!! The last time I went to the US I was asked two questions by US customs:
1) How are you today?
2) Where are you going?

Twice before I was asked who I was visiting. I said, "my fiance". Customs didn't care.

I wouldn't worry about it too much.

You must be lucky then! I have been getting the 20 questions every time I cross! But this upcoming visit will be the first time going through airport customs, so it may or may not be different I am still going to bring every piece of proof of ties that I can.

How annoying....the Calgary and Winnipeg airport websites do not have any information about having to recheck bags if you are connecting to a U.S flight!! Toronto website says you have to! Edmonton is the only one that advertises U.S. Quick Connect! where you do not have to recheck your bags! The ironic thing is that the connecting flight I was looking at to Calgary, Winnipeg or Toronto I would not have enough layover time to do it! The Edmonton flight I would have a 3 hour layover! and I wouldn't have to recheck my bags!! rofl.gif Gaaaahhh!

Many of us have travelled to the US while our K-1 is pending.... I did it myself quite a few times. There is always a chance of being turned away, for anyone. But like you did at the land crossing, bring proof of ties!! And your return ticket. That should be sufficient, be honest and have your proof and you should be fine. If you feel more comfortable about it (which it seems you are) do your preclearance in Canada to ease your worries.

Thanks everyone for your responses! I tried to find a list myself of US preclearances in Canada, this is why I need VJ! Aahhh the things we do for love....Really not looking forward to the 9-10 hours of flying and sitting in airport terminals due to the 2 stops! Heheheheehe that is a BIG move - you'll enjoy winters in Texas after Northern Saskatchewan:-) - summers - not so much (maybe):-). No black flies, though.

Yes, your personal effects may accompany you when you cross the border or up to 10 years afterwards.

That would depend on where you move to in Texas. For instance, cities in the panhandle (such as Amarillo) can get quite cold during the winter. Not as cold as most Canadian provinces, but still colder than one might think for Texas. As for summers... well, that also depends where you are. Most people think Texas is hot and dry. That's true if you live somewhere like El Paso, but if you're in Houston, it's hot and humid. In fact, it's sometimes so humid there, I can walk out of the house or get out of my car and my glasses will immediately fog up.

I will be moving to Houston. I know it does get cooler - but nothing compared to our winters.

Is there a grace period to bring your belongings in? I have looked a few places but can't find the information. Also - does anyone have any moving companies they recommend?

Thanks!

CanadaCanadian Tax Question do we file together??
I filed as the CRA told me too and I ended up losing big time. It doesn't help that I was a single parent before and basically still am. I raise my two daughters alone - no support from my husband. I lost my Child Tax benefit, GST rebate. Everything has been audited and even back to a year before we were married. They have now decided I don't owe any backpay on GST but I am still having problems with Child Tax Credit. I wish we had waited and gotten into the US before we married. It's not like it would matter if I were working but I am on Maternity leave and EI. So the Child Tax Benefit would sure help right about now!

As for the US - my husband filed - married filing seperate and he never had any issues. It did not affect him at all. Wish we could switch incomes! lol

It's different state by state. In Texas, you're supposed to get a TX driver's license within 30 days. But that's for people moving from other states to Texas. For me, I was allowed to use my foreign (BC) driver's license for 1 year in Texas.

You'll have to dig through AZ's driver's license webpages to find the info out.

I'm moving to Texas when I get my K3 approved. I just emailed them and asked etc. I will probably need to get my texas driver's license as soon as I have my SSN. Until then I will just drive backstreets..... I am not excited about driving in Houston..... rural Saskatchewan vs 4th largest city in the US! This may take time to get use too.

So we have to wait for her passport which we applied for at the same time.

CanadaHorrible day - hope it doesn't foretell tomorrow!
This morning we got on our flight to Vancouver to go for 2 reasons....

1. Register my daughters birth abroad
2. Attend our K3 Interview/Medicals tomorrow.

So we get on the plane (which by luck was actually at the gate on time). We taxied out and sat on the Tarmac for 10 minutes. They then announce they have a faulty light in the controls so we had to taxi back. After 30 minutes they fix that light - we taxi out and we actually take off....... only to be told 15 minutes into the flight that there are issues and we had to return to the airport. So we fly around Edmonton for a 20 minutes and land. They then tell us to get over to another gate because they have another plane for us. We wait at that gate for 30 minutes or so before boarding and finally our flight takes off - managed to stay in the air without issues and we landed in Vancouver 2 1/2 hours late. We were just on time to miss our daughters appointment at the consulate. So now we've rescheduled it for Thursday. At least we hope we have - we cancelled it online and rescheduled but if they consider it done that could be another thing!

I hope and pray this doesn't foretell how badly things will go tomorrow. My doctor screwed up royally on my letter stating my cronic condition (asthma). She actually didn't get any information correct and when I called them about it - they said she is on holidays and they cannot redo the letter until the 15th. So here I am worried and frightened that this will be a go for them to fail me on my medical. I haven't had an asthma attack in 5 years. I went through my records with the assistant at the Doctors office and we wrote down all the proper information - I hope they accept it!

I'm normally nervous but this is totally nuts! Could anything else go wrong?

Waivers (I-601 and I-212) and Administrative Processes (221g)Question about a Misdemeanor in the USA
I'm on an F-1 student visa looking at adjusting status by marriage and have a question about whether I will need to obtain a waiver. I have no criminal record in Canada where I grew up but the only thing on my record in the USA was in 2002, during my first year of college I got a (misdeameanor) Minor in Possession of Alcohol, I was sentenced to a $225 and that was it, no other traffic violations or anything. It has been over 5 years ago and I have heard that it could be expunged. Even with that record I was still able to obtain a licence to practice in my profession, but of course US immigration could see it in a different light. Will I need a waiver for one misdemeanor? Is a minor in possession of alcohol considered a controlled substance violation?

Thank you in advance!

Waivers (I-601 and I-212) and Administrative Processes (221g)Medical Waiver
Hello everyone! I have a question that has yet to be answered by searching the forums and posting this in another thread. Here is the situation.
-I attended school in the U.S on an F-1 visa from 2002-2008. In 2002 while in the U.S. on a visa without immigrant intent I was arrested and pled guilty to a Minor in Possession of Alcohol, I was 18 at the time and I am definitely not proud of it! Please no judgements, just factual information.
- Appeared in court and was sentenced to a $225 fine. Never looked back on it until now. In fact I was never questioned about it at the U.S or Canadian border until I moved back to Canada, only questioned about it at the U.S. border while continuing visits my fiance who is in the U.S. Every time they asked me about it I answered honestly and most of the time the border guards laughed about it.
- Most of what I have found on VJ and elsewhere points to this offense not being a CMTP

My question is: Is this considered a crime of moral turpitude? And will I need a waiver?

The clinic in Vancouver that will be doing the medical exam has this question listed on their instructions, and I am also wondering if the "different procedure" may affect me even though the offense was not a felony and did not have to do with (controlled substance)drug possession or traffiking? What is the different procedure? I am waiting response from the clinic to see what is meant by this as well.

10. If you’ve been convicted of an offense (including DUI), please let us know when booking your

appointment. A different procedure is required. Informing us can save you a time & expense.

What type of offense are they talking about? I am assuming it has to do with questions related to the DS-230 about drug trafficking violations and crimes of moral turpitude? Can anyone share some insight to this?

Thank you in advance.

This link gives a thorough explanation of CIMT. It also appears to me this will be no problem for you. . .not only does it NOT appear to be a CIMT, but there is a caveat listed for one offence as a juvenile. . .

You do need to list it on the DS-230, but as I said, I don't think it will be an issue.

Thank you for you response emt103c. I did not think it was a CIMT either.

I am still a bit worried about the medical exam part of it though, as they were not specific as to what kind of offenses go through a "different procedure." I hope to hear from them on Monday.

We'd appreciate it if you could get back to us on what they mean about this at the medical exam. I've never heard of a "different" one at all.

Well one of the first questions she asked me was..when was your DUI? I said, I have never had one. "Oh well then what was your offence" I told her what it was and what year it was. She then said oh well then you will be okay because it was not in the past 3 years, and you have not had multiple offences. She then asked me when I wanted to book my medical. I said to her that I was just assuming that the offences that require a different procedure would have been drug possession or DUI related to "moral turpitude." She basically said, "they" don't tell her anything besides the offence cannot be within the last 3 years and cannot be multiple offences. She did not say specifically what the different procedure was, only that there has been people that have had to redo their entire medical because they did not inform the clinic when booking the medical.

What makes me wonder, and I should have asked her what the different procedure was headbonk.gif (I was just happy it did not pertain to me because I stressed about it all weekend)....is people ignoring the instructions when it says to inform the clinic about any offences or at what point did they have to add the part about informing the clinic.

I have yet to find the answer to this question and I may seem trivial. I know that the petitioner needs to call USCIS to get updates on the case they will not allow information given out to the beneficiary. Who is allowed to call NVC or DOS to receive information on the petition?

I am not sure sorry, my SO called NVC about a hundred times, which I wasn't able to do from where I was. It can be cost prohibitive from the other side of the planet. All you can do is give it a go and let us know yes.gif

I was the beneficiary and was able to call the NVC, which I did frequently smile.gif

Thank you!
